I am a mechanical engineer I can sharpen a driil bit by hand no special tools or angles. Just a bench grinder. Perfect every time. I've never bought a driil bit for about 30 years. Just a flick of the wrist for a couple of seconds done
*EXACTAMUNDO!* goldsmith / master jeweler been doing same way with bench grinder, sharpening stone and used electrical grinder too without angle tools. all by hand and eye coordination
This is one of the most dangerous things you can do to a cutting stone. You will form a groove on the side of the cutting blade is the same as scoring a breaking point in it. This is extremely dangerous.
I have noticed that the grinder will not always be in the same position each time it is set up and the drill bits will not always hit the same place in the wheel. However, the point is moot if you are skilled enough to notice when a wheel has an issue. The fact is, anything you do in a shop is dangerous and the trick is to be aware of the worst case scenario. and mitigate (like not grinding every drill bit on the same point of the wheel). And if every new experience or idea causes you to cringe instead of refining the idea and thinking ahead, maybe a workshop is not a place you should be in because those are the people who get hurt.
@@josephfroman7135 you should use a gringing stone not a cut off disk are you trying to get people hurt !!! If that cut off y broke at that speed it goes flying fast use the right grinding disk for the right job as well as oil is better than water for cooling the drill bit after sharpening...
Buy a Drill Doctor & it takes about 60 seconds & you can choose 118⁰ or 135⁰ angle, & you can split the tip, plus it sharpens carbide drill bits, too. Works better than hand grinding by far.
Grinding a drill on a cutting wheel is the biggest nonsense I've ever seen. This weakens the side of the cutting disc until it blows up in your face!!! Drills are sharpened on normal grinding wheels.
OMG. This guy made a simple 30 second sharpen into a major job. Just hold the bit at the right angle on the bench grinder and rotate the bit at the same angle for both sides. Then grind a bit off the back side behind the edge. So simple
Read the comments. Have you noticed how many people can talk a good job? With my 59 years as a skilled tradesman I have no criticism, just gratitude for a good idea.
Anyone that uses a grinder with a cutoff wheel to cut wood has no business trying to show anyone how to sharpen a drill bit! I'm not familiar with the brand of the grinder but makita is not a good quality tool brand so I guess that shows the intelligence level of the maker of this video!
Yeah I know what you mean, been using a Mikita skill saw for 30 years it has been putting food on the table for all those years. There’s no American made tools anymore parts made in china and assembled in US
Seriously. The right tool for the right job. Metal cutting blade not for wood. Step off. I am disappointed in the lack of experience. Do something the wrong way for 50 years, you're still doing it wrong. Period.
I have watched numerous videos on drill shappening but this is on point especially the 120 degrees angle vertical and horizontal is awesome. I have shappened some bits without this precision. Welldone
I would fix a bracket with a screw to the grinder handle thread and fix it to the vice. Squashing the case in a vice will deform the plastic potentially pinching moving parts.
I learned how to do this by eye as a tradesman. And this is a great way to do it without that skill. Some drill bits are only tip hardened. So it pays to learn how to re harden old drill bits too. But some think it is not 'cost effective' these days. But I can tell you that I have saved tens of thousands of dollars not buying new drill bits. And I have working drill bits that are over 50 years old that belonged to my father. Waste not, want not. Signed: The ultimate recycler.

Oh, it’s for marking the sharpened and unsharpened positions, helping to make the grinding work more even! Thank you for watching the video! I love you
The end result is a far cry from perfect - at best only sligthly better than at first. The center part is the problem. Should be narrower, thus facilitating the centering of the drill and the drilling itself. Don't give advise like that when you don't know much about it!
Never do what he just did please. Angle grinders are one of the most dangerous tools due to the disc breaking and trying to make it into a grinder weakens the disc increasing the chance of it breaking and launching into you. Also, their not meant to cut wood. Always use a tool for what it’s meant for or you will get the trouble your asking for. Also, without cutting oil on the drill bit, you are going to heat up the metal your attempting to drill resulting in dulling the drill again. Just buy a grinding wheel and stop listening to online know nothings please. Safety first or stay home.
It is very, very dangerous to grind with a cutting disc. Change the cutting disc to a grinding disc and make the video over again ...then it is cool. The way it is now with a cutting disk is hazardous.
Good video. The only negative thing I can see is that a cutoff disc was used, where it should have been a regular grinding disc. The cutoff disc is not made to have pressure applied to the side like that. But I also understand that it wasn't a lot of pressure. Someone else may not be able to be as careful as you were. ;-)
Didn't amaze me. My steady wrist can sharpen bits for ferrous non ferrous with equal lip within a few minutes. You cannot drill in such thin sections without predrilling. Or cut the web to perform it
Who cuts wood with an angle grinder and a hacksaw……..I bought a hacksaw blade once and after a few strokes all the teeth were gone.I took it back to the shop and the lady said it’s probably made for cutting wood.
How about not dulling your tooling in the first place. RPM= 3.82x constant surface feet per minute, divided by tool diameter. You spindle speed is so high the cutter is just rubbing.
I use a bench grinder and I can have it just a sharp, and take half the time without having to make a jig, Americans have been using bench grinders to sharpen their drill bits for years.
Para afilar una broca no hace falta hacer ningún artilugio , se puede afilar a pulso con un poco de habilidad , esa broca del vídeo no parecía cortar muy bien.
Absolutely atrocious way to use an angle grinder and cut off disk. You can absolutely explode a disk using it to grind with the side, as well as using it to cut wood. Bush league and dangerous. Do not do this.
Long winded, if you use drill bits a lot, experience and practice against bench grinder you will learn automatically correct angle to sharpen drill bit
