  • The mattress was made out of materials purchased from Arizona Premium Mattress Company. I used an 8.5 inch combi-coil individual pocket with different zones of coils, including extra smaller coils for support near edges. On top of that, I used a 3 inch all natural 100% Talalay rubber topper in medium. On top of the medium Talalay I used a soft 100% natural Talalay topper. The zipper cover is an organic bamboo and wool cover. The overall feel is that of a Luxury Firm mattress.

The mattress is five years old, and I still love it. I haven’t had to flip it yet. I’m about to order one for my son. I also really love the blended Talalay rubber pillows, they’re my favorite. I will be ordering more pillows as well. After five years the pillows did lose some of the height. But it’s still my favorite pillow to sleep with. If I sleep with any other pillow I have neck problems. Before I had this bed, I had lower back problems, and was seeing a chiropractor.

We bought this same bed almost 2 years ago, except in a CA. King. Love it. The mattress cover is made of very durable material with a heavy duty zipper on it. The pocket coil springs are much better than the old mattress box springs. They are smaller in diameter flex more easily and will last a lifetime. Same with latex toppers. Natural rubber from rubber trees, not polyurethane petroleum based foam, which takes a permanent set after a few months, ( which is why people end up not happy with their mattress). Latex foam keeps it shape and bounces back. Traditional mattresses are all sewn up so if you are not happy it becomes a throw away. With this mattress if you decide for whatever reason you want to change the foam topper, you can zipper it open and replace it. AZ Premium Mattress offers mattresses that you can try and swap out toppers if you think it is too hard or soft. I am not affiliated with AZ Premium Mattress, just a happy customer.

One question for you if you don't mind providing some insight based on your experience. Do you think being an ex college football player at 6'2 220lbs with the same pocket coil foundation as yours with 3" of "Firm" Talalay with 2" of "Medium" Talalay would be too hard? Or perfect for my size? My back and next hurt from all the years of football. I know you have a son around the same size so I'm hopeful you or he can provide me with some much needed advice! @@Nate_4545 I really like the combination that I did for my bed. I was told that firm is very very hard. So I did medium and then a soft on top. The best thing you can do is call the company and talk to someone who works there. I think I talked to the owner Ken, and he recommended my set up. My son likes the bed the way it is, and he is 6’3” and 240 now. He needed to use my bed for about a month when he dislocated his hip in a wrestling accident when he couldn’t go up stairs. It worked out really well for him, but he has no Back issues. You could do a firm in the middle and then go for a soft or med on top. One thing about this is you can always flip the layers around. If you need something firmer then do the firm and medium. If you find it too hard just order a 2 inch soft topper to add to it. I think You’re going to need the firmer core support with back issues, but again talk to the owner, he will help with your situation.

I still love everything about the products I ordered to create my own mattress. One of my best purchases! When I stay at luxury hotels, I can't wait to come home to my bed...so much better! The coils, I feel, make a difference. They give more bounce and "give" to the pressure points, and because they are individual, there is less movement over the entire bed when someone gets up. I will never buy any other type of mattress again. I plan to replace all of our household beds with this type of mattress. My son can't wait to get his!

thank you so much for this video. I have tired all the local mattress stores in my area with zero luck finding what I need and what. I was surprised at this. Because I am 5'1 120 lbs and a side sleeper, I require a super plush soft mattress. The Mattress Store I went to only had 1 mattress that was soft ultra plush and it was for 5,600.00 I am a side sleeper and petite I need a soft plush mattress. SO HARD to find in stores. I don't think mattress stores in my area want people to know you can make your own mattress like you did. I actually had a sales person try and sell me a mattress that was firm even though he knew I needed a plush soft because he did not carry ultra plush. I ask why they don't carry more than 1 option he said that the mass people need want firm or med firm. so I am limited or they have none. I have no choice but to costume make my own. Thank you for sharing your video it helped me a lot.

I got some medium firm T latex mattress for a really good price but I thought it would not be firm enough. Now thanks to your video I can see that is just perfect actually. I would just go for springs with a medium firm layer on top. I won't even need the matress topper. If I need it I would take one extra that you put on top of the mattress. Before that I would try putting two cotton quilts for softness

I have this same item. Got it about a month ago. So far I love it. And I love the idea of having a mattress where I can change the configuration or replace layers as I see fit. You have complete visibility and interchangeability into the components of your mattress. Otherwise, when you buy a new mattress and if it starts dipping after a year you are basically screwed. You're out all that money for what is honestly just cheap unknown layers inside a permanently closed mattress. I will never buy another type of mattress set up again. I got a full size with the 8" Combi-Zone Pocket Coil by Leggett and Platt, the 3" All Natural Talalay Latex Mattress Topper, and the 11" Full Bamboo Wool Zippered Mattress Cover. The whole combo completes as a 12" mattress as the mattress cover has a built-in 1" wool layer. Total shipped to me in CA was just under $1K. I will be getting a queen size variant of all this in the future for another bedroom. I might go with a 3" dunlop layer instead of the Talalay. It might be a hair firmer this way. But I got the extra firm Talalay topper on the full size and it is very firm already.

Yes to both questions. Love this bed! Also remember you’re putting a bottom sheet on as well, So the stretchy mattress pad wouldn’t make much of a difference. My sheets fit a bit loose. The bottom sheet that I bought is the one that’s for extra thick mattresses. I also have a Store purchased mattress cover or pad on top. I Wouldn’t just put sheets on top of the mattress, you want a mattress pad as well to protect the mattress.

I first ordered their "Luxury Firm" model that felt great the first few weeks, however it broke in and started developing soft spots that started giving me lower back pain. Since then I have exchanged it for their "Extra Firm" version, however it's way too firm, to the point where my arms fall asleep and I'm tossing and turning all night long. My question is, with the set-up you guys got with the coils and two different latex layers, how is it working out for you? Is it giving you enough lumbar support?

The "LATEX" in the store bought bed you spoke of, is most likely DUNLOP latex, not TALALAY. 2ndly, it's most likely BURIED under a few layers of POLY foam, & 3rdly, most likely a minimal amount. Most bedding stores provide a cut-away so you can see the layers, & if not, you're not getting what they "SELL" you on. Lastly, the layers often are GLUED together...not good. You can cut any existing mattress cover OFF...swap out some layers, and simply buy a ZIPPERED cover like you see here to encase a revamped mattress. MUCH cheaper to do that instead of tossing the old one out, as you don't get metal fatigue in mattresses for quite some time.

This was the recommended combination from the company, and I also tried out some expensive mattresses in the stores and this was the combination that they had.The inner springs are individually coiled and you don’t feel the movements of anyone else in the bed. I also wanted a bed that was high up and if you just use the Talalay rubber it would be a really thin mattress. The coils, I believe are also important in relieving pressure points. I think if you put the rubber on a flat board based bed, your pressure points wouldn’t be as comfortable. For example shoulders and hips. I am a side sleeper, so it would bother my hips and shoulders.

@@theartladyshome1169 oh and your talalay pillows aren't all latex , they are 40% latex and 60% poly, I've been communicating with arizona mattress comp. For a few days about their false advertising , it says it's 100% latex but that isn't true at all, that's why your pillows are not going to last like they should. They claim 100% talalay but with added petroleum products know as synthetic latex, Synthetic Latex
Synthetic Latex is a synthetically produced compound that mimics the properties of natural latex. Rather than being harvested from rubber trees it is produced from petrochemicals. Several types of synthetic latex exist but SBR (styrene-butadiene rubber) is the most common type of synthetic latex used in the production of synthetic latex foam.

Synthetic latex foam usually has a more dull, less springy feel than natural latex foam. It is generally a bit less durable than natural latex foam and will tear easier. Synthetic latex foam also generally has a stronger and more abrasive odor than natural latex. It is uncommon to find synthetic latex foam that meets textile and furniture emissions standards such as ecoInstitut, Oeko-Tex and Greenguard.

We didn’t lay on the springs as far as I can remember. As far as edge support, I can lay right up to the edge of the bed on my back and have no problems. I don’t feel like I’m going to fall off. On my side with more weight distributed to the edge I’m comfortable at 4 inches. There is very little to no sag on the edge. I feel very supported sitting upright on the edge, way feet still don’t touch the ground and I’m 5”10. The edge sinks some when sitting on the edge, but less than a regular mattress. I will never buy another store bought mattress again. So happy with this. Oh and for extra support, that’s hard to tell...it’s all pretty supportive to me. It is a bit softer at the foot of the bed.

I like a cushion firm with some plushness at top and good support underneath. I generally can sleep on anything as long as it's not too soft. This design was recommended to me by someone else as if I decide I need more firmness later I can always swap and put the 2" medium latex over the 2" soft latex to firm it up slightly.

@@bethcatt7919 Then you have a cheap mattress if you feel it.
Waterbeds and air mattress are not a good core for everyday use. If you don’t have back problems before using, you will eventually.
Foam core: retains a lot of body heat, and will eventually begin to break down. Not all foam is created equal, there’s cheap to high dollar. But even high dollar will lose its shape eventually causing sag and dip. If someone tells you differently, they are ignorant of facts or just lying.
Spring core: best option to date. Just note, springs also run from cheap to high dollar. The pocket coil (marshall) springs in this video are the best choice to date. What makes them good is that each spring is NOT connected by a helical wire like the standard type springs, which means that each spring acts more independently in your body’s weight depression. With a helical wire, there’s connection between springs so there’s a larger radius of your body’s weight going down. (Pocket coil is the commercial of a woman jumping on one side of bed, glass of wine sitting on other).
I have my reservations about this do it yourself mattress. It’s fine, but there’s no way to keep the inside parts from sliding around, or to keep the top secure. If the top slightly folds from shifting and you sleep on it, it’s ruined. You’ll forever more be sleeping on a lump. Or the latex could shift off the spring from whatever you do in bed. The zipper will not secure your mattress together.
Zoning coils are also troublesome. It’s fine, but your partner will have to sleep on this thing too. He/she may not share your sleeping habits or back issues. So some give and take from both parties will be needed if you are looking for a specific coil setup.

hello Art lady,,,, trying to get some answers from Ken about my DIY build, i'm using the 6" bolsa coils, King size 3" dunlop 30 ild support layer and trying to figure out the ild needed of our twin xl top comfort layers, the wife will probably need a 25 and i like a softer and probably a 20, still trying to decide if we need a 2" or 3" thick talalay comfort layer... guess my question is your quilted cover ? trying to keep as close to the latex as possible without any quilting at all, have asked ken several times if he can make a stretch knit bamboo cover without any wool quilted into it,, still hoping to hear from him with his answer,,, wondering what you think of the wool in your cover ? has it mated down at all ? do you think it changes the feel of your latex or not much at all ?? what do you think of the 2" topper ? any opinion if you would have done a 3" or is 2 totally sufficient ? 3 years later would you have done anything different ? how is it holding up ? did you add a protector ? did it or the sheets change the overall feel ? Thanks...

    • @ArtLadyChannel
      @ArtLadyChannel 4 роки тому

chris surovic The 2 inch topper is sufficient. I don’t think the stretch knit would work. The bamboo cover encases everything together, and helps prevent the layers from sliding around. My bamboo cover still looks brand new. I Purchased a separate thin mattress cover from Belks, thats what I use over the bamboo cover to protect the bamboo cover. I just use regular sheets and The sheets don’t take away from the feel of the bed.
The mattress company does sell another cover in cotton. I’m planning on ordering a mattress for my son, and I was going to try out one of their cotton covers this time. I’m still going to keep everything else the same as my bed, but since they offer this now, it’s a few dollars cheaper, and so I was going to try it out. I think the most important thing is what’s inside the cover, not the cover itself. The cotton cover does look thinner than the bamboo and wool cover. By the way, the pillows are amazing, mine still feels like new.
