Hi!
Today I made a mattress in a very easy and economical way. You can use leftover fabric from previous sewing projects or repurpose fabric from old clothes to make this mattress.
In this video, I make a mattress that is about 85cm x 190cm. I cut 110 pieces of fabric measuring 20cm x 20cm to make 55 small pillow cases. Then, I used the cotton of an old hug pillow to stuff 55 sewn pillowcases. Finally, I sew 55 pillows together using a zigzag seam, the small pillows are arranged in 11 rows, 5 columns. If you want to make a larger mattress yourself, cut more pieces of fabric.

I have made one of these many years ago. I filled mine with feathers it was really warm. I found out that they made this sort of item during the war. You have done a beautiful job with making it. Well done to you.
My mother-in-law made one of these in the shape of a fish for my oldest daughter when she was about 3 years old ( now she’s in early 50’s) She wore it out using it every nap time. I couldn’t find a picture to add to this, but it was her most favorite thing. I later made one for my brother-in-law to take to college as his quilt . I used 5x5 inch squares to make his. This one looks really cute and brings back memories.
This has been around since before WWII, back to the Great Depression. The made 'pocket mattresses'. Great way to use up any and all scrap fabric and you can do a few at a time and save up until you have enough to make a whole mattress. Good video :)
🥰
I've seen many different ways to make puff quilts I've done many but this appears to be the simplest and easiest way to get it done thank you very much it's a very beautiful quilt
In my grandmother’s day (1920’s) these were called “biscuit quilts” and were often the first quilts that children helped with in the winter months. I suspect they have been around for as long as quilts of any kind.
I was going to say the same thing. lol
I remember them being made when I was a kid in the 70' & 80's. Just another generation discovering what has been around for many generations 😊

They are still called biscuit quilts.
Cozy!
This may be a new, never seen product to you, but I've been making these for many years. Yours is pretty.
Me too

My Mom made one in the mid-1970s. She used various scraps to cut six inch squares and stuffed each one with cut up (washed) torn pantyhose. While her neighbors made both sides different, my Mom used the same fabric for both squares. The centers of each pillow had a peach color yarn tie to keep the filler from bunching during machine washing.
Her 7 year old granddaughter helped turn each pillow inside out after school. This granddaughter's daughter now has a Bachelor's degree in Fine Art and is working for a museum.
Parabéns!!! Maravilhoso.

Using the zigzag stitch looks like a good way to keep the joined seams flat. Definitely going to try this with my many scraps.
This is beautiful. Perfect for small children to nap on off the cold floor. Great for sleep overs. This would make a great baby show gift to a new mother. Wonderful idea. It could be machine washed in the triple loader at the laundry mat whenn needed. Thank you for this great idea.
Oh, a puffer quilt! Made one of those back in the 70s--Simplicity had a pattern for a quilt and coordinating pillow. I wasn't too savvy on batting back then. I used some cotton and some polyester, and got a big surprise the first time I washed it. All the cotton batting lumped up.
What's batting? Do you mean backing?
Kara, I believe she means the stuffing inside each little pillow squares. In other words don't use 100% cotton because when it's time to wash the blanket the stuffing "cotton" will lump. Perhaps it's better to use a synthetic material such as polyester.
I still have the same Simplicity pattern!

From quiltipedia:
Quilt Batting is the layer of insulation between the quilt top and back your quilt. This is the middle layer of your "quilt sandwich" that adds warmth to the quilt and can make your quilting design's puffy. Many types of batting are available in a variety of fiber content and lofts (thickness of the batting) and sizes.
Thanks for sharing , it turned out lovely ..
When I made a quilt like this I left filling the squares until after they had been sewn into rows , leaving open edges all along one side , then I filled them …so much quicker and easier ..
Another one I made I didn’t stitch around the edges first I just did zig zag to join and it looked really good and saved a lot of time ..
Many different methods out there to make this really great quilt / play mat / sleep mat .
🤩
De cuantos sentimientos son los cuadros???
Very nice kid
My mom made me a large blanket like this back in the 80s
My grandmother and mother made these
Many years ago I'm 65 now and we call quilting.
My granny used to make puff quilts like these....thanks for rhe memory.
Eco-friendly patchwork blankets are now in vogue, and my mother sews them for the whole family.
This is so beautiful nicely done. Good job mom l will follow this pattern for my grand kids.
Love this as some of these skills and things have been lost and too see this again has renewed my interest in sewing and quilt making like my grandmother use to do. Although most of her quilts were hand sewn. Thanks 😊
Puff quilt, been making these for many years :) Use good thread and fabric only. Does better when you launder.
Never seen before my mother used to make quilted mattresses and Donna's when my son was little and that was over 25years ago ,
Heather, this is the 1st time I've seen or heard of a quilted mattress, and I'm in my 50s - but you also mentioned "Donna' - what is a reference to?
My mother is Scottish I don't know if this has any thing to do with it I'm 50 myself and my mother is in her 70,s now but my aunt's used to make all of there blankets and patchwork quilted Doonna's ECT and not by pattern but just buy memory I still have a the very quilted doona that she made 25years ago but it's my grandson's now, and just because someone says never done before believe me somewhere in the world it's been done
W O N D E R F U L!!!!!!!! So use ful without being too stuffed! Thank you for sharing!

I cant tell you how many times i thought i came up with a great idea only to find someone elae already cteated it. Youre not alone. 😂❤❤❤

This is a tutorial that I need but didn't know I needed it until I saw it! I'm going to make a bunch of these for my family's camping trips! I want to do a little research on the filling, though, because I find that poly fiber fill smooshes flat after a while (it's a big issue with the arm rests on my couch, so I'm kind of annoyed by it at this point). Still...this is going to make us SO much more comfortable on camping and vacation trips! Thank you so much for sharing your creation!
😍
What fill did you use? Is it washable?
Nicely done! I thought it was tedious but the result is neat! You encourage to make one for my little great grandchild. Thank you so much.
That is very well made... and so Beautiful...
Thank YOU so much for sharing this great video.
Best How To video I've ever seen. I can never hang in there for a 3min video much less 12+ minutes because they all have such needless & endless talking! Yet I managed to watch the entire thing because it's all demonstration! Straight to the point!
By the way, how much did this project cost you?
❤️
Love it, and an excellent use for old clothes instead of throwing it in the trash.
I love watching you sew this l will make one for my new granddaughter. Thank you so much 💕💕
Very nice. However I sew 10 pretty pillowcases together then insert 10 pillows for a super thick comfy bed..
💝✂️ I discovered a way to sew faster and easier even as a beginner, I talk more about it in my channel, I hope it helps those who need it.✂️✂️✂️✂️
I love your method of making this bed mattress. Reminds me somewhat of the method used for
making the puffy quilt.
Great tutorial…I immediately saw a “cat bed” variation in my head…Use 5 squares across for the first thee rows, then only three rows across for the last row. Sew it together just as she says, but when you get to the last row of three, pull up the sides and sew them together with the back row.
Already, my mind is still going…you can stay simple while still making an easy adjustment. I will likely go with smaller squares and maybe make a small front lip too. ❤️
Very Nice
Wow! This will be a nice baby shower gift! Time consuming project but it will bring smiles to both the maker and recipient. Thanks so much for sharing.

Perfeita👐👐👐👐
Very good .. I’m an average sewer, but I could make this. The chair cushion appeals to me. 🌻
I forgot about this!! I made one many years ago but yours is much prettier than mine was!
I love this - beautiful! I love your way of putting this all together. I want to try making some of these for my grandchildren. I can make them according to what they like and they won't fight over them and will want to take their naps! 🤣 Thank you! ❤️

My son would love that!
It looks simple yet time-consuming. Wow ! I don't think I have the patience to make this? Bow to you. 😮
I had one in the 70tys. You might want to say resurgence of an old craft.
Very much like the quilt on Wartime Farm.
