"Nanny State!" Julia Hartley-Brewer Challenges Tory MP Over Voting For Smoking Ban

  • TalkTV's Julia Hartley-Brewer challenges Conservative MP Sir Geoffrey Clifton-Brown after Rishi Sunak’s ban on youngsters smoking clears first Commons hurdle.
MPs voted 383 to 67, majority 316, to give the Tobacco and Vapes Bill a second reading.
The legislation, seen by the Prime Minister as a key part of his long-term legacy, would make it illegal to sell tobacco products to anyone born after January 1 2009, with the aim of creating a “smoke-free” generation.
It does not criminalise current smokers, but is aimed at preventing the harms caused by smoking, the leading causes of preventable illness and death in the UK.
Conservative MPs were given a free vote on the Bill, meaning those who voted against the Government’s position will not face punishment.
Julia says: "You don't believe in freedom of personal choice".

So true..... Freedom of choice is freedom of choice. By the sounds of this legislature, if you were born after 2009 and you want to take up smoking (Not sure why after that amount of time) it would be illegal for you to buy them or for any other adult to buy them for the individual.... That is literally removing their choice to do what they want to do with their health and life..... Vape pens, are just as bad or as worse as cigarettes, yet they won't be banned..... I'll give you a for instance.
Sitting outside a coffee shop smoking. I get it that someone doesn't want to sit next to someone smoke. At that point the non smoker has a choice. They can move. The irony to that is that they move to a place that's far more dangerous and that's car fumes. But that's fine is it. For me it's all about people moaning for the sake of it. Drugs are illegal but you can get them anywhere in the country. Prohibition doesn’t work & never will. Guns are illegal but people still seem to be able to get them. I think the government should concentrate on heroin dealers & gun smugglers. When smoking was for 16 and up i was 11 when i started so making it illegal never worked at all we just got people older to buy it, has raising the legal age for drinking stopped under 18 from drinking no.

As a left wing person, I find this ridiculous! We should 100% educate people on the harmful effects of smoking etc and restrict it from children but to ban adults from smoking cigarettes is utterly insane.

They have obviously been told to wheel the seat belt line out, what they fail to see is there is NO comparison. If there was they wouldn’t be able to even buy the car!
Wait for huge tax rises next to cover the short fall, then alcohol limits!

Up to the 90s people would have been astounded if the government tried to ban smoking for adults. There was still a genuine widespread belief that the government had nothing to do with your personal life choices. Governments are so insidious that we often don’t see the constant creep to a more authoritarian society but it is the only way a government can keep growing. Therefore it’s the nature of government to destroy itself in the end.

We’ve been in a nanny state for decades…if we weren’t cocaine would be sold in pharmacies by license holders ,instead of human trafficking, county lines, that use kids to ply their trade.
In summary prohibition just sucks…and causes the majority of crime nowadays ✌️

At this rate make the government panic. Everyone ring in and say I'm not coming to work. Let the country go on strike altogether. Soon you won't be allowed to drink, have parties, go on holidays, treat yourselves or your family. At 18, adult age... We have a right to chose when we earn the money to pay for it.

There's a real discrepancy in the price of a smoke these days.
If you smoke cigars you only have to spend less than £1 (a single cigar) to get your fix.
If you smoke straight cigarettes you have to spend at least £9 for a pack of 20 and with 'cigarillos' which are really just disguised cigarettes, about £5 for a pack of 10.
Yet if you smoke roll your own and buy tobacco the smallest amount you can buy is 30 grams which will cost at least £18.

It's not a nanny state - it's an authoritarian state. Big, big difference that should not be played down. Pathetic Tories.
People seem to really struggle to discren the difference between worthwhile objectives and authoritarian mandates, as if you now have to mandate everything, boss people around, threaten them with the law if the don't do what you want.

I've never been a smoker - hate it. But I like to race dirt bikes, mountain bikes, etc. Almost killed myself a few times (once was actually clinically dead for 30 seconds before they bought me back).
But I'm totally allow to do those things. It's weird that dangerous sporting people like me are allowed to kill ourselves with things we like to do, but smokers aren't...
By the way, that doesn't mean i want smoking in airplanes, etc... But in someone's own home, etc?...
