RIP and long live Buster Welch (May 23, 1928 - June 12, 2022), aged 94

My Great uncle was one of the last working cowboys in Oklahoma. His name is forgotten, he was well known in Texas and Oklahoma. If you were an old cowboy back then the name Jim Wagner was a household name. He was cursed later in life he lost his right leg because of having it crushed by a horse falling on him. He never complained about the pain he had. He was always smiling and telling stories about the cowboy life he loved! He died at the age of 95 years old in a nursing home. Sadly, it was not until you live life and look back at all the things you missed and questions you never asked!

I hate to tell you this. But your Great Uncle was far from the last working cowboy in OKLA.He may be gone but the work and the cowboy’s are still here.

I KNEW your name sounded familiar!! I saw you in the YELLOWSTONE series when they were filming at the 4 6's RANCH. 😂 I had a quarter horse 🐎 Named BUSTER ---my 1st horse! I spent summers as a kid on my Grandpa's Montana cattle ranch in the 1960's. there were still a few of the old time cowboys around that were in their 80's and 90's. What a time!!!
When I was a kid we spent quite a bit of time at a family friends Ranch just outside of Lander Wyoming, he was a WW2 veteran that had served in the Marine Corps 4th Division with my Grandfather and it seemed like the man had done it all. He had been an outfitter in his younger years and mapped most of the Shoshone National Forrest for the Govt after the War, he would take us way up into the mountains and leave us to camp for the week where we would spend most of the time fly fishing . Being a Kentucky boy I have never tasted creek water as cold and sweet as what was running through those mountains. One of the coolest things about him though was this … growing up I was a HuGE Roy Rodgers fan, I saw every movie and read every single book I could get my hands on about ole Leonard Sly, and once a year, every year for for or five weeks Roy Rodgers and his wife Dale would drive their RV out to the ranch to spend time with Hugh Jones “our family friend who turned out was also a life long friend of Rodgers” . It just blew my mind that I knew someone who actually knew Roy Rodgers haha, I never got to ask him how they had met because I was so star truck just knowing that the two men were friends and that he would drive out to camp and spend time with him just as we had done several times. That’s a lot for a ten year old boy to take in. Of course they’re all gone now but I’ll have those memories for the rest of my life. They would have to run me out of the state of Ky to ever get me to leave but if it ever did happen, well the only other place that would satisfy me would be that beautiful part of the country around Wyoming, Colorado and Montana

I had the privilege of meeting Buster in Fort worth one year. A true hero of the cowboy
My great Uncle, Buck Garrison, was a working cowboy on the Matador Ranch for many years. He had some great stories and was very bowlegged from being on a horse all of his life.
I grew up with these kinds of men. I miss those days.
Ain't nothing better than cowboy stories
When I was 19, I use to work at The Green Oaks Hotel. A Beautiful big place that catered to the Cutting Horse Futurity Finals every single year. All the greatest Horsemen & Women would attend this event. While in college I was in charge of the money in the bar called "The Knight Spot" which was where all the Party Celebration use to be after the Big Purse Win! He would always stop by for a "Sippy Sopp" with all his friends right before the competition started up. I watched the bar while the Bartender was on his break each night & I'd make real sure to pour them a tall stiff one & they always looked for me each night ! LOL
Buster was young back then (45 years ago). Hell, they all were & now most of them are all gone but their kids took on the legacy. Time Flys by quickly. Im surprised there isn't many more comments posted here with this Legend.
He rode some of the best horses that ever lived. He always had the greatest rides which you dont see as much anymore. Ahhh the Good Old Days!!!

This great horseman may not remember me, but I credit him for my hands. When I was about 10 yrs old, I had a really nice bred little mare that like most kids, I got her hard in the mouth. He had started that mare for us, so my Father sent me and the little mare to him that summer. He made me fix her ruined mouth. He only got on her about 4 times all summer. But I found myself learning to use a hackamore correctly, working my butt off and getting yelled at a lot. But I did fix that mare's mouth and never messed up another one. Today, I make most of my training money fixing other people
s horse's mouths when the've been made hard. The rest of my training money, I made training hackamore to finished bridle horses (jaquima to freno horses). Thank you Mr. Welch
Hack was all i used when i had a cutting horse , Very seldom had to really use it ,
Wow what a great story from a old cowboy.. tracking her 3 days.. damn. I mean this guy freaking lived it man. We watch it in movies. But this guy.. I mean just that alone I'm imagining him sleeping on the ground with his a given bed roll , cause let not forget . Every thing he owned was on the back of that horse.. and hope someone gave him a canteen and some jerky. Tough as nails PAP. RESPECT 🤠💯%
I caught that too. Most wouldn't think anything of it but tracking a horse on foot for three days would be more than the majority of people could handle. I go out riding in the mountains for 8 hours and im ready for the comfort of my home.
We had the same ol boys here in Australia when I was boy in the 50s -60s , heres to you Booth Slade, Ben Brazill, Jack Hudson and Jim O'Donell et al. And those I spent my boyhood with who went on to become great Horsemen in their own right, John Hirsch and Gordon Litchfield among others.
This makes me miss my grandpa so much.
A GREAT Cutting Horse Trainer and Rider. Saw him win the NCHA Futurity on Dry Doc in Ft Worth about a million years ago.
Those Doc Bar horses are some fine horses. Had a stud off of Doc's little Lena, hell of a cutting horse.

That was Shorty Freeman. Buster trained and won the Futurity on his brother Dry Doc.

My grampas ranch in Montana had to be the best place i spent my youth in the late 60s early 70s . He had some old cowboys on his ranch when I was there . At least in their 70s. Some tough ole hombres. I miss those days and I will be back in Montana one day !

The reason he keeps digressing in his story, is because he probably experienced more in a week than most experience in a year. The details keep getting in the way.

The world lost the last true american cowboy. Shut the lights out. Were finished.
Short version: Never get off your horse because - if she gets spooked and runs it will cause a stampede and you will have to walk a long way to find her.
For some reason this gentleman‘s story reminds me of one of my own when I was on my first overnight horse ride and my horse decided that she did not like a another horse coming up and nuzzling her so she started bucking like crazy had to ride her into some mesquite bushes to calm her down at work but man water ride
