It's finally here! Sorry about all the confusion with the upload, guys. UA-cam's copyright claim system can be really exasperating at times. Here's hoping it stays up - I've submitted a dispute reminding the studio that it's fair use, and if they're reasonable (which I think they will be), the video should be here to stay.
If they take it down again you should dispute it, it could be protected under fair use laws because you are technically using the film's visual and audio for review purposes, which is what fair use covers
About your point at the end... LIFE's motto told us that the whole time, kind of sad that so few people understood that. "To see the world, things dangerous to come to, to see behind walls, draw closer, to find each other, and to feel. That is the purpose of life." Se behind walls. Draw closer. Find each other. To Feel. I read it as things beyond our own worldview, things that scare us, people that we see as different... when we get to know them and find who they truly are we will feel for them as they will feel for us. It wasn't the purpose of LIFE, it's the purpose of Life.
I adore this movie with a passion. Ben Stiller did something so unique that every time I'm blown away. Definitely one of the best of the decade in my opinion. Also, this movie on Blu-ray is quite possibly one of the most beautiful things one can watch.
Has anyone thanked Houston for his astonishing work he's crafted here? Seriously nobody seems to appreciate the hours that he must've put into crafting this constructive review of: TSLOWM. Think about how long it must've took to write and edit this, because it's truly... truly astonishing. Thank you Houston for giving us this masterfully put together piece of art, and I sincerely hope your channel is given the appreciation it so rightly deserves.
This movie is definitely in my top three (just cause saying it's my all time favourite it's too definitive). He spoke to me so much that I actually stepped out of my comfort zone, went on an adventure so much bigger than me and overcame my panic attacks. And believe ir or not, the rental place gave me a red car 🙂 Thanks for this vid, it was nice to learn more about this wonderful movie.
So I really did like the movie before watching this video. But now you've made me appreciate it SO much more. Thanks Houston, I really enjoy your videos!
One of my faves. I’ve seen this movie more times than any others. Beautiful cinematography, creative fresh ways to communicate messages, perfect cast, amazing characters, well rounded story, and I could go on!
First time I watched the extended trailer, I choked up and KNEW I was ready to quit my job. Sure, it was the right timing, but it's a powerful movie about getting OUT into your own life and seeing whatever beauty you can.
I agree with your comment … ironically Walter doesn’t hate his job. It’s just that there’s more inside of him, that has been trapped wanting to get out.
I'm so in love with the movie that even going through it with you by this video makes my eyes teary. Honestly I cry every time I watch it, not because of any sad scene but purely because of its beauty. Thank you for pointing out all of these amazing things about the movie. This is, and will be, my most favourite movie, everything about it has its own meaning and I keep discovering them no matter how many times I watch. I think "The secret life of Walter Mitty" movie itself is a ghost cat also. People who get it appreciate it the most, not because it gets high rating or good critics.
I have come 4 years late to say thankyou for this beautifully crafter essay on this movie. That ending and reveal wrecked me to my core, because i had arrived at the same conclusion as you did. To take time to appreciate the beautiful things all around us no matter how big or small their contributions are to our lives, because in the end, they all matter.
I know it's reeeaally late but i just wanna say THANK YOU VERY MUCH. this is one of my favorite films but anyone i know just hate on this movie because they said that the character's motivation doesn't make sense and not well calculated, the film isn't realistic, etc. I mean, of course it's not that realistic, the guy daydreams a lot! I first like this film because of the beautiful longboarding scene and the cinematography, but gradually fallen in love because of the somehow atmospheric music that accompany the journey, and somehow i can personally relate much to walter's character especially to his constant daydreaming (it's like also there's an admiration for walter because of his seemingly bad calculated decisions, i think it also speaks greatly about walter's sense of adventure, also his development into a person who's willing to steps out of his daily life and take risks), and idk i just feel this "warmth" in my heart everytime i watch this movie and i love it (sorry this comment got a bit long)
thank you. I really liked this movie and the second half of this analysis took the words right off my mouth. it's not just the generic "live life to the fullest", it's also about the beauty we often don't see in ourselves.
6:50 what’s even stranger is that all of the cars appear kind of retro... A bunch of cars from the 80’s and early 90’s... Despite the fact that they kind of establish this being more modern/current times.
Hola amigo! first comment in Spanish as I see. you must transmite this man! This movie is my favorite movie of all time. The whole story is a allegory for photography, another thing that is best when unpretentious and when it is beautiful it doesn’t beg to be seen
I've always loved this film. The cinematography and soundtrack are great, and as a pretty unassuming person myself who daydreams about a more exciting life, the idea that there's beauty in even the most seemingly mundane things has always resonated with me.
This movie not only spoke to me , it slapped me on the face . I have never heard of this movie before. It was on tv one day and as I walked by it got my attention . For some reason I stopped what I was doing and stood their and watched the entire movie . When it was over, I sat down and cried . It made me realize what I have been fighting with deep down for all these years . I had let my life turn into that gray piece of paper .
This is truly is a “feel good“ film, a romantic comedy, a movie about adventure and discovery, and it’s kind of a “coming of age“ tale. But none of those are bad things. I know that calling it a “coming of age” story doesn’t really seem applicable because Ben Stiller/Walter Mitty is a middle-aged man. But that’s exactly what this movie is. It’s about a man who grew up, but due to pre-maturely taking on very mature responsibilities was not able to develop into the man that he *wanted* to become, and instead grew into being the man he *needed* to be for his family, and never got back to being the person he always *intended* to become. And how many of us can tell that same story? How many of us grew up with set of interests, values, and goals, that ultimately had to put to the side in order to do the things *that we have been told* we need/have to do. And this adventure is about a man who isn’t necessarily “lost”, but is still finding his way in the world, and realigning his values to match his desires, and aspirations. And if anything, the fact that he is middle-aged only adds to the intentions of the movie. Because it reaffirms that *no matter how old and set in your ways you are, it’s never too late to discover and pursue adventure, and a life and existence that fills you with purpose.* And while it’s not the most difficult thing to grasp onto, doesn’t mean it isn’t impactful. I feel like people dinged the movie for crafting and experience that people can easily recognize. And while it may be a little bit hipster-y, it never attempts to assert its self to be overly deep, and it doesn’t come off as hokey, overly-cheesy, preachy, or pretentious. The fact that a lot of review were‘s interpreted the movie as “trying“ to be deeper than it actually was, despite the fact that the movie isn’t “trying“ to do that at all, kind of reaffirms the fact that while the main themes may be easily recognizable, there is a deeper meaning and more complicated feelings. And one thing that I noticed and appreciated what is the theme of “beautiful things don’t ask for attention“. And I like how that phrase is an analogy for Walter, at least in some ways. I would go deeper into that, but this comment is already for too long, and no one will ever read it anyways. I’m just saying, that despite what critics may have said, there is undoubtedly more than just the obvious and central themes to take away from this film.
never thought of it as a coming of age film but that makes so much sense, and the fact that he is middle aged adds so much weight to that genre, I'm surprised more films don't do that
I really loved this movie the first time I saw it at the cinema but rewatching it recently I've really noticed how well shot and beautiful it is and it's really elevated it for me
Great movie, great photography and music. The movie calms you so much and tries to show you how simple life can be.The symbolisms and the hidden messages are great too. I think that the scene with the cars was about simplicity. -What cars do you have?We have two,one blue and one red, which one do you want? In my eyes was a scene to show that we waste too much energy and time to completely useless and stupid things.
YAY! Finally a video about one of my favorite movies! I have never left a movie theater so utterly and completely... I don't know. Like, I felt like I hadn't fully grasped everything yet and was floating on a cloud, but nonetheless left with a feeling of wanderlust and amazement. The cinematography was absolutely beautiful (framing, scene transitions... everything) and the COLORS. COLORS!!! The music was grand, worked perfectly with the music and... it felt like I was at a concert, getting goosebumps. And the acting is also really good. I'm not usually a Ben Stiller person, but he really got into the forlorn and detached aspect of the character (as well as the larger-than-life persona he would have in his daydreams). I just- Yeah. Thanks for making this video!
I read the original short story years ago and liked it, and I watched the Danny Kaye movie version and thought it was okay, but I really enjoyed this new version and appreciated Ben Stiller's interpretation. I've been ambivalent about Ben Stiller, but I really liked how he fleshed out the character, made him real, imaginations and all. I have been a fan of Shirley MacLaine for years. I enjoyed both their characterizations. I was surprised by Sean Penn, I found him the most approachable I've ever seen him. I'd like to have a beer with this guy, talk about . And I really liked Kristin Wiig's character, the most attractive I've ever seen. I want to thank you, HoustonProductions1 for a well thought out explanation of the movie, I certainly noticed some of the things you covered, and found the new ones thought provoking. And it's a great soundtrack, I come back to it often. Beautiful things don't ask for attention. They truly don't have to. Take that! Kim.
One of the most delightful movies of all time. And there are two master piece moments I'm think; the major tom song. The skateboard scene. Thanks for your vedio. I love this film. Watched in kisumu Kenya the night before my daughter was born. Feb 13 2014. Will always remember finding this movie at that moment
One of my all time favourite movies, the production, the sound, the music, the colour palette, the actors and overall feeling and emotion it brought to me. This is just one of a rare few movies I can watch any time and day of the week and usually watch at least twice a year. The last time I watched it with my daughter of 11 and she understood what the movie stood for which surprised me more then expected. It's a underestimated movie which not everyone appreciates but at least me and my daughter can share this movie together. Loved how you picked it apart and have it resonate a bit deeper for people to understand.
I don't know why I'm only just finding this video but I'm so glad it exists. A bit late on this, but I just wanted to interject and say that "stepping into the unknown" is the message of the film. I mean, yeah, that's a pretty major theme in the film, but I percieved it as a story about figuring out who you are and finding yourself. The movie is just straight up two hours of Walter journeying to "find himself" both metaphorically and literally. At least I'm hoping that was one of the meanings behind him eventually "finding the lost negative" since I wrote an entire essay on it for my year 12 english essay. I just like that all the effort he went through was to find a picture of himself, I think the double meaning is pretty cool. AND YES, I WILL DEFEND THIS MOVIES INTEGRITY WITH EVERY OUNCE OF PASSION I HAVE, CUZ IT'S GOD DAMN AMAZING.
This film deserved so much more than what it got, 10 year old me would be so triggered There's like 4 films that fueled my desire to create films, this was the first one Like, those camera angles and respect for lighting is beautiful
Great review. I can’t remember when I watched it for the first time but it wasn’t that long ago (a couple years ago, maybe). The thought that “beautiful things don’t ask for attention” (I think that’s right?) - implies gratitude doesn’t it, or maybe it’s just next door? If you recognize something as beautiful, couldn’t it make you grateful for that beauty and your ability to recognize it? Like the Ghost Cat. Feels that way with this film. Even if the LIFE motto is invented, it’s still amazing.
This is why I subscribed to your channel. I watched this movie a while ago and I really enjoyed it even though I couldn't figure out why. Thanks to you I also am proud to say the secret life of Walter Mitty is one of my favourite movies.
Favorite movie of all time. Watched it twice in the theater, and later actually went to Iceland, rented a car and drove around the entire island in the middle of winter. Saw an arctic fox, raindeer, Icelandic horses, aurora borealis, a huge meteor, beautiful landscapes, walked on a glacier, met and stayed with local Icelanders. This film is the quintessence.
So glad you talked about this movie! I have always thought that Walter Mitty was a grossly underrated film, however, this analysis just made that even more clear. Also, I never noticed this before, but the choice between the blue and red car is truly genius!
Fantastic work. Amazing film. Perfect execution by all, imo. Loved the supporting actors/actresses and Penn...while everyone pulled off their roles perfectly, I truly admire all that Penn brought to the table. His very chill and humble character was outside the box of much of his past character roles and it was just...perfect.
You only missed one thing. In the beginning Cheryl talked about how she went to a class on on writing detective novels. Then, on viewing the film a second time, you see the blatant clues left everywhere. Like the photo negative of water fading into the scene of Walter sitting by the fountain. Clearly they are implying that that photo WAS the water. The obsession with the piano, the cake that his mother talked about and the sailors ate, it all all makes sense in the second watching.
I just watched this film yesterday, and I'm a bit surprised that you didn't mention the audio clues leading into Walter's daydreams. You first hear it in the top-down shot of his train going into the city. It's a rhythm of 8 notes. You'll hear background sound effects fall into the same pattern as he's starting to fall into fantasy. I thought it was a pretty clever addition!
Can't agree more. Great review. Saw this film by chance via a free preview and so glad I did. Brilliant soundtrack, wonderfully shot with some great landscapes. It inspired me to visit Iceland after seeing it in this movie and had my own personal 'ghost cat' moment when we saw the Northern Lights. Very underrated film and one of my all time favourites.
I agree with everything you say me and my father have a very sentimental feeling about the movie. Your channel and content is phenomenal. Walter Mitty's Soundtrack is AMAZING. The cinematography is great. This Video is right next to the MCU video (witch is one of my favorite on UA-cam). Walter Mitty is a Masterpiece.
I've had a soft spot for TSLo Walter Mitty since the first trailer, I could just tell that it was going to be something new that I could really get behind. I'm really glad to see your piece here give it some well deserved love! Thank you. As for your next video of this kind, I'd like to see one on **Spanglish**. Its a film I find to be very unique in the span of Adam Sandler movies, and one of my all time favorites. Thanks again, Houston!
Freaking amazing. Love it. The underwater stuff with u talking ab deeper stuff while we see Walter go deeper in the water... well done. One of my favorite movies fo sho
Thank you for making this video! I had a connection with this film from the first time I even watched the preview of this dude always lost in his imagination and i turned to my husband in the theater and was like wow this is me! I grew up wanting to be a traveler and photographer but always find myself afraid of stepping out so this movie and soundtrack always inspire me when I need it most. I like the slow and thoughtful progression of this film and dont think its pretentious at all. In fact I always thought it was the opposite. I think the humor is rather humble and doesn't feel forced. The product placement never really even crossed my mind bc who has never eaten as at pappa johns or had to work fast food or knew someone who tried online dating. The only one that felt slightly random was cinnamon but that's bc it didn't really tie back into the script but even so you have to eat somewhere in an airport so it's not completely out of place. I guess what I'm getting at is that products tie it back into the real world and actually make it some what relatable. Anyways it always did bother me that this movie is not well liked but maybe it's hard for people to get if they have never truly experienced a sense of wanderlust.
I really love the movie so much that I dont really want to share it with anyone, because I don't think a lot of people will really understand it. People really dont understand how good it is. It is, in and of itself, a ghost cat.
The movie is about a personal journey that was interrupted and then taken up again. A beautiful story of adventure and self discovery. It always makes me happy.
I just watched this for the first time and holy heck. This video was absolutely fantastic, I'd always been kind of on the fence about the secret life of walter mitty but now... I really wanna go watch it again. Fantastic job.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a great film, so is this video explaining the real intent of the movie. I really believe you have a great interpretation of what you see @HoutonProductions1. Thanks for this explanation that made my appreciation for the movie grow multi-fold.
Saw Ben Stiller on the poster when this came out, passed on it. Saw your channel. Saw you liked this, so downloaded it without watching your review. Watched it, really enjoyed it. Not enough to say it's my number one, but enough to order it on amazon. Arrives after nearly a month (blame Taiwanese customs) Remembered you made this vid. Watched your vid. You summed up it's traits precisely. Very good work.
I totally agree with your assessment of this movie. Thank you for this very thoughtful assessment of one of my favorite films. It was very helpful for an assignment I'm working on.
I really loved this movie from when it first came out to it's position in my collection. Glad you broke it down so i could see it again and understand even more wonderful things about it.
This movie is my family movie. We watch it every year and it always makes us smile. A truly nice film that doesnt want to be the next block busting master piece.
AAEE!! it is up! This is one of my favorite films and will probably stay in the top 10 or 20 for the rest of my life. The promos really sold it for me and when I watched it the 1st time, I just had to watch it again because I loved it so much. It is truly underappreciated and thanks for giving Ben Stiller and his masterpiece its due praise.
i love this movie so much and i find it so incredibly moving. also (idk what this says about my attention span but whatever), normally i wouldn't sit through a 20ish minuet analysis of a movie but you do it in a very entertaining and engaging way and i can't wait for the next one
LOVE this movie and this review! The Secret Life of Walter Mitty was one of the very first artistic-type movies I tried and has absolutely inspired me to be the proud cinephile I am today!
You did a good job breaking down the themes and images of this movie. It's also one of my favorites and it's partially responsible for inspiring me to get out and explore the world.
You're echoing literally all of my personal thoughts on this film, down to the snow leopard scene being your favourite. One of my all time faves too, for sure.
You are too cool! I love this, love your explanations, disclaimers, and keen observation. I stumbled onto this via a friend's recommendation of the movie, and so glad i did. Thank you VERY much.
You're gonna be a huge channel someday. I can tell you put so much work into what you put out, and you really pay attention to the tiny details in what you review. I'm most definitely subscribing, and watching a whole lot of your videos. Thank you, my friend. 👍🏻
I couldn't agree more with what you said in your analysis. I personally find it quite interesting that people I know either hate or love this film (how could you not love it at least for the Pictures?!). For me it is pleasure to watch on so many levels - visual, sound, music and the story which is so relatable - the romantic plot, the longing for adventure of an office mouse. Its hard to describe the feeling of calmness and joy it gives me every time I watch it.
This movie is amazing in my opinion. It's a beautiful and unique journey, a fresh yet still classic story. I just love the ending, as well as the journey along the way. This review is awesome, I'm so glad it's not blocked (for now)! Now I need to go watch that movie again...
Excellent review! The scholarship, research, passion and sheer hard work you put into this really shows and made me into a subscriber tonight. I thoroughly loved this movie from when it was newly released only that now, think I can appreciate it even more with the help of your insights. Photography is a favorite pastime for me and is one of the main reasons I keep coming back to this movie, there are so many breathtakingly beautiful scenes to be discovered within. If I could've would've asked you to comment a bit more about the cinematography and use of photographic composition. Cheers!

The DC joke at the start had me!!! 😂😂😂
BRAAVOOO!excellent work. i love this film it's completely underrated on all levels.
this is honestly one of my favourite movies. Like you said people really misunderstood this.
Or just have a lower tolerance for kitsch.
Herr Schmidt it's kitschy, but it has more layers. I'd compare it to Life As We Know It
It's like "oh he's not doing that, he's just thinking of succeeding that" and you see that he actually is doing that. Genius movie, I just love it.
Like
so, the movie just did it's thing without seeking approval, would that mean that the movie is about itself?
"Beautiful things don't ask for attention."
So I guess it does.
Meta haha but yeah true
One of my personal favorites, When I left the theater, I was 100% in love with the film!
i would have loved to see it in the theatre.

No I don’t care for his way of looking at movies. He’s missing the point completely he’s more worried about colors and motifs.Sorry

OK, I just watched again because of this. And it elevated from "good" to "one of my favorites". Thanks for bringing this movie back to my attention.

Theroux at his best
Love the soundtrack so much, got chills right away at 1:35
Will Mcmeekin Dirty Paws by Of Monsters and Men if you want the full song. ☺️ They are definitely my favorite band of all time

Is that's what it's like to be a DC fan? Yes, completely.
I've always loved this film. The cinematography and soundtrack are great, and as a pretty unassuming person myself who daydreams about a more exciting life, the idea that there's beauty in even the most seemingly mundane things has always resonated with me.

I’m just saying, that despite what critics may have said, there is undoubtedly more than just the obvious and central themes to take away from this film.
never thought of it as a coming of age film but that makes so much sense, and the fact that he is middle aged adds so much weight to that genre, I'm surprised more films don't do that
Maybe YOU should make a video on it
Thank you. This is EVERYTHING I needed someone to say.
Thank you for this. You made me love my favourite movie of all time even more. 10/10 movie in my eyes, just like this video
YES. FINALLY. THANK YOU. I LOVE THIS MOVIE SO MUCH.
Take that! Kim.
how different the movie from the original one?
I thought I was the only one who loved this movie. I can't believe I had never seen this video of yours.
This film deserved so much more than what it got, 10 year old me would be so triggered
There's like 4 films that fueled my desire to create films, this was the first one
Like, those camera angles and respect for lighting is beautiful
Oh my gosh. You deserve more subs.
I liked this movie, I want to see it again now
Thank you for making this video!
You sir have convinced me to rewatch this gem after many, many years. Or just four years, I guess.
I really love the movie so much that I dont really want to share it with anyone, because I don't think a lot of people will really understand it. People really dont understand how good it is. It is, in and of itself, a ghost cat.
Dude....Thank you!!! I just realized that this might be my favorite movie! This was great!
Thank you for your review of this movie. It has revitalized my life.
I NEED TO WATCH THIS NOW!
Great film, It hit hard. Your review was fantastic, it hit even harder. Thank you.
The Secret Life of Walter Mitty is a great film, so is this video explaining the real intent of the movie. I really believe you have a great interpretation of what you see @HoutonProductions1. Thanks for this explanation that made my appreciation for the movie grow multi-fold.
Great work. Much more in depth than I was anticipating. Uncovered things I hadn't noticed, and made me want to watch Walter Mitty again.
Man this was beautiful. Can't believe you make such eloquent videos at such a young age already. Subbed!
One of my favourites too, partly because it reminds me of travels of my own in India and Nepal. Excellent cinematography.
Saw Ben Stiller on the poster when this came out, passed on it.
Saw your channel.
Saw you liked this, so downloaded it without watching your review.
Watched it, really enjoyed it. Not enough to say it's my number one, but enough to order it on amazon.
Arrives after nearly a month (blame Taiwanese customs)
Remembered you made this vid.
Watched your vid.
You summed up it's traits precisely. Very good work.
Great analysis, just rewatched this movie since 2013 and forgot how great it was
Excellent video. I'm so thankful I'm not alone in having this movie at the top of my all time favorite list. Keep up the good work!

This movie is the ghost cat they describe in it.
This is my favorite movie; you hit the nail on the head with this. Thanks for the great analysis.
I personally loved it. It's a simple story really nicely pictured. It "spoke" to me
Finally, we can see it.
I really loved this movie from when it first came out to it's position in my collection. Glad you broke it down so i could see it again and understand even more wonderful things about it.
This movie is my family movie. We watch it every year and it always makes us smile. A truly nice film that doesnt want to be the next block busting master piece.
Couldn't have said it any better........thank you bro
It's one of my favourite movies of all time as well
AAEE!!
Thanks for covering one of my all time favorites 🙏
THANK YOU! I'm rather thrilled that someone else finds what makes this great.
You're gonna be a huge channel someday. I can tell you put so much work into what you put out, and you really pay attention to the tiny details in what you review. I'm most definitely subscribing, and watching a whole lot of your videos. Thank you, my friend. 👍🏻
+Jear thank-YOU!
My favorite video essay to date. Great job!
Finally someone that can explain this amazing movie!!! Thanks for this!
This has been my favorite movie for years, and seeing this video now has given me a whole new perspective on it and a reason to love it even more !
This is my favorite movie of all time and you managed to put all my thoughts about it into words. Just, wow. I love this damn movie so much.

This video made me cry. Such an amazing video!
Thank you for making this video, This movie is very close to my heart!!!
Cheers!
