This is a helpful video but he misses a few things:
First, do yourself a favor and remove the knee bolster, that's the lower dash panel under the column that he didn't want to remove. I have an '02 Avalanche and I've already had this piece out to install a remote starter / alarm system, there are a lot of wiring connections I had to make in the under column area, and this piece is tricky to figure out but not hard to remove. There are 2 screws on the very bottom, then the only thing holding it above are 2 push in spring retainer clips, they are located near the top edge on either side about 2" from each end. Pull straight back, do not pry sideways or you'll break plastic, the clips release when you pull straight back on the panel.
Then there is a stamped steel pan under the column with 4 nuts on studs, once you remove that you will see how routing the wire from the clockspring is super easy. No need to be fishing it through or contemplating a cut & splice.
The horn contact at 2:39 is also super easy, just push in slightly and rotate it 1/4 turn to the left and it comes right out with your fingers. Take it out before messing with the steering wheel, no need to be fooling around prying on it with screwdrivers.
When I went to pull the steering wheel I ended up using 5/16" - 24 thread bolts. The threads in the 2 holes are wonky, I had both metric and inch, fine or coarse to choose from and nothing went right in. The threads are soft metal and look like they are as cast, so I oiled the bolts and they went in firmly. Looks like you can form those cast threads to what you need to work it out. I had no trouble pulling the wheel.
Then when you go to remove the 2 clamshell halves of the column trim, first remove the tilt release lever. Just grab it firmly in your fingers and pull straight out, it just snaps into a plastic socket. With the lever out the bottom half of the trim comes completely off, again making the wire routing super easy. There are a couple of zip ties to cut off and you just zip tie the new wire in the same spots.
I had to replace my clock spring because I did a body off frame restoration and the steering wheel got spun in all the fog of war. The GM part # for my '02 Avalanche was 1933-0850 but that probably won't help you. They were discontinued and according to my GM parts connection I got the last remaining unit. I've seen Dorman makes them but I don't know what years or applications are covered.
Installing a new one is straightforward because it comes with a locking pin to keep it centered until you have it in place. There is also a window on the unit to view a yellow indicator inside if you have to center it from scratch.
And lastly, don't forget the snap ring that retains the unit, and if you do forget then you have to go back in. Don't even think about driving it with the snap ring missing.
Again, this is a helpful video, most helpful to me was the part of rotating the wheel 90 deg and releasing the spring clips that hold the air bag with a screwdriver, I needed that just for openers. Thanks.

So you made a video on how to install a clock spring and completely skipped over the actual removal and installation...

Thank you for making, this. It is my first airbag wheel. You gave me confidence to proceed. Am I correct that you turn Clockwise to remove the main Nut ?1

It has been a while since I did this so I may be remembering wrong, but I'm fairly confident it was normal threads and counter clockwise removed it.

Do you have to center the clock spring in the middle to insall or it doesn't matter?

It looked like he was turning clockwise in the video to loosen it unless my brain just saw that backwards some how. Good point.

Does show you how to install clock spring. It just shows how to remove steering wheel and he did that wrong. Steering wheel needs to be centered before removing.

    • @AllThingsBoost

Because the wheel is keyed, as long as it's close to center it's fine. Also, the wire routing sucks to do. Whole job is a pain in the butt,

How’d it hold up without snap-ring or did you put it back in?

It doesn't make any sense to make a video and not show the entire procedure procedure. Pull it off or relabel it steering wheel removal
