BELLE & EZZY: For more back story information: in February, I purchased Belle from an auction and well... we discovered she was pregnant about 4 weeks later following a wellness exam and quarantine! We were completely shocked but also very happy. This will be our first foal ever born at Free Spirit Farm. Here is a little background information: Belle is a 9-year-old Dapple Grey, Draft who is just under 16.2hh. On 6/16/23 Belle gave birth to her MYSTERY FOAL at 1:15AM!!! We were so excited and overjoyed upon the foal's arrival! Belle had a beautiful filly and we decided to name her Esmeralda. Ezzy is bold, intelligent, kind, willing, and independent. We absolutely adore her and Belle! I am SO THANKFUL that Belle (and Ezzy) came into my life.

Been there and have had to make those hard decisions. It doesn’t get any easier. Yes Horses can be fun and very rewarding, but along with that comes the bad such as Belle’s shivers and 😮as with Lumier. Even from a “reputable” source you can get surprises. From what was said he was actually culled from his inability to cover a mare and not from whatever excuse they gave at the time. If he was proud cut he will be the same as having a stallion in the herd.

My vet told me that the greatest act of love we can show our animals is the gift of letting them go when it's time. That's not to say the decision is easy. It's never easy and is often painful. It's not much but I'll stand with you on any decision you make regarding Miss Belle. You know her better than anyone at this point and are obviously on top of your research. @@phyllispalladino6183 I absolutely agree! I euthanized my reserve champion Arabian mare and it just about tore the heart out me, but her laboratory test results were irrefutable. Yet I was criticized because, to the casual observer, she did not appear to be in crisis. Later, I owned a Paso Fino that developed navicular disease. A horseperson can intuit pain in their horse, and it became obvious that she was suffering. My veterinarian at the time disagreed with my decision to have her 'put down', and told me that horses were even raced with her condition. So your point about "quality of life" is well taken.

It's a horrid decision to make 😢 its necessary though. I know a few people that "weren't ready" to say goodbye...once I said (in a nice way) that I know it hurts but it's selfish to keep them here when they're suffering, they changed their minds. They didn't regret changing it either. After seeing it from another angle, the could see that it was selfish. I go by the same ethics....as much as it hurts 💔

Anyone with an autoimmune condition gets worse with pregnancy they are. My girlfriend had MS and after the baby her immune system went bonkers and she had flare ups for months. Sweetheart you are an excellent horse woman and, I for one, never question your decisions regarding your horses. As a horse woman in my youth I understand how hard these decisions are and how personal. I hope you don’t feel the need to justify your decisions to others. Informing us is one thing but it breaks my heart when you feel the need to justify your decisions. You do what you need to do for yourself and Belle.

Although autoimmune problems can flair after pregnancy it doesn't happen to everyone, in fact some people get better during/after pregnancy. That's one of the things that makes autoimmune conditions difficult, they are so unpredictable. But when taking about animals you really shouldn't breed them because there are risks and you don't want them to pass it to offspring. I'm just glad miss Belle is in good hands now.

Free spirit didn't breed her, she was already pregnant when they bought her from the auction so there wasn't much to be done. In general breeding horses should really be left to professionals with authentic bloodlines who know the genes of their horses and not to people who just like the coat color and have no regard to whether or not the horse is physically healthy enough to be bred.

People who dont know horses have a hard time comprehending how hard it is for a horse to function without 1 hind quarter. It's even more of a struggle than being a quadramputee as a person, because they can't barely move enough for proper digestion, and to keep muscle tone, and be a happy horse. Also with a neuromuscular disease comes constant pain and pins and needles, numbness and spasms. Anyone who has fibromyalgia, severe chronic pain from a spinal injury, neuropathy, RA or any condition where pain and mobility issues run your life can understand. Shae you are so amazing and compassionate! Being a horse 'empath' is so important to knowing and training your herd, it hurts when you can feel their struggle.

Neurological pain and progressive loss of mobility and are mentally very hard on people, it must be really really hard on a horse because they don't understand what's going on and have the fear of predators. I think a lot of Belle's mental issues might genuinely stem from "just" this. (She might have felt some pins and needles or something like that long before anything was visible to humans.) I had no idea about the problem with digestion, that sucks. Poor poor Belle.

First I have adored Belle since day one because of the way she related to you and the way she moves...so beautiful like a dancer. It's unique...she has an air about her walk...she strutts her stuff. But people also don't realize what dancers go through in training and in injury seasons...esp after professional life is over. And the neurological issues, because I work with disabled or people with strokes. Everything you are saying melts my heart but is positively about the truth and very real. I have learned so much about horses from you... but best, I use ideas you share and apply them with my students and even my animals. Caring and kindness is such a huge live kabguage that flows through everything you do. Fight or flight...so relatable to trauma situations. Then you talked about Luminar. Wow. Multiply trauma and how both Belle and Luminar would handle life. 😢. Love how you handle it all with your firm but loving habits. Thank you for sharing all these details. Heart talk is your gift. Explaining and educating your viewers has certainly made me grateful. Love your openess and transparency. Thank you also for letting us visit Belle with you. I now sense, more and more, why your story , as a trainer and Belles situation mirrors my life with those I train and even care for. GOD Bless you Shae

Thank you for the update. Sometimes things come into our lives to stay, and others are only with us for a short time.
Whether they’re with us for life, or just a few months or years, they’re in our lives for a reason.
You found Belle when she needed you and have given her a safe home for her and her foal. She will live the rest of her life, however long it may be, in as much comfort and peace as it’s possible for you to give her.
Her baby has been started in life with all of the advantages that Belle was likely denied, and Esmeralda will have a world of possibilities available to her as she grows and learns.
In turn, you have learned so much from having both Belle and Esmeralda in your life and you freely share that knowledge with everyone.
When you look back on your time with Belle, the only regret you will have is that your time together was so short.

I wish I could show you some footage to share of an 18 year old mare with suspected Shivers at my barn. That might really get the point across to people. Unfortunately, the vets here don’t really know what they’re dealing with and haven’t made an official diagnosis. Fortunately, after many tests, it is believed that she’s not experiencing any pain so still has quality of life. It’s just a really tough thing to see. Like Belle, she’s a big beautiful mare (Andalusian) who was SO sweet and a broodmare/dressage horse for most of her life. I’m not sure when things went downhill exactly, as she’s not my horse, but I saw her a long time ago and she was normal and now - her progression did seem to stop at some point, but she’s VERY neurological. She can walk/trot/canter, like movement is good, but at a standstill it’s like she has zero balance in her hind end and is often leaning against a fence to support herself. Going from a standstill to a walk seems to be difficult for her, and similar to Belle, she’s changed from a super broke/handled mare to being VERY nervous of anyone around her. The owner’s daughter continued to ride/compete with her until a year or 2 ago, basically just ignored the weirdness on the ground because under saddle she actually moved fine.. until she lost her balance while being ridden and practically fell over and the daughter got injured and basically never trusted riding her again. So trying to progress Belle’s training could put a rider or Belle herself at risk. It’s absolutely heartbreaking to see and know that there’s nothing that can be done, but maybe the positive to take out of my scenario is the mare is 18 and still going 🩷 Just living a life of retirement on a pasture.

MS is inflammation in the nerval system and liquor.Because of that infammation the myelin shaeth gets scarred and nerval impulses did not get through(depends on the stage).
You can test for MS via punction for liquor and CT scan.
Sorry I am no native english speaker, but I hope you understand what I mean....
Shivering in horses, the cause is still unknown.

its hard to describe shivers in a human equivalent . I would compare it to late stage Parkinson where the body "freezes" for a time (moments/minutes) all the while the horse is trying to move and then wonders why it can't move. Then the body moves and the horse has a moment of panic because its thinking Oh I can't more! Oh I can move but they can't control the movement. Its frightening for the horse and person caring for them.

It's a difficult balance and the most important thing is Belle's quality of life which you know.
I watch another horse channel where a Friesian gelding called Bear (black horses friesian) has SDSL, incurable.
He is opposite to Belle, quiet, intelligent and loves people. He has had a major operation, a plate and 18 screws to give him a better quality of life. He can tolerate this major poking and prodding, Belle definitely couldn't.
Bear's op is a major risk and he has an antibiotic resistant infection which all of Team Bear are hoping/ praying he comes through.
The vet team have fallen in love with Bear as well (hard not to!) And are trying everything to get rid of this infection. Manuka honey and medical grade maggots are next.
He loves his humans, grass, cleaves, blueberries, bananas and melons. He even has apple quarters dunked in his water bucket which he loves 😊
No guarantee he will get through this, but as long as he's bright eyed and not in a huge amount of pain, then he will keep going. His mum Tracey will know when he tells her he's had enough. He's a happy boy for now, and we just want him back at the beautiful farm in Cumbria UK where he lives. Darling Bear 🐻 💙❤️
