I love making these because the folding & gluing down are so relaxing. I made the bindings with the seam binding kit tool. 2" wide fabric to make a 1" binding. Everyone loves them. I even gifted one to the clerk in the fabric dept of Walmart. LOL...I'm not the best hand stitcher (bad thumbs) but they look better than when I Machine stitch them. I did glue baste the latest one & you're right it holds the fabric down so you can machine stitch with neater results.

Another thing we could do is square it with additional fabric and make a square mat.
