Great video, some really useful stuff here that's got me thinking of how best to improve my casting and fishing. As i have very little time on the water it can be all too easy to doubt my technique or tackle, articles such as this can really help steer people in the right direction, for me the length of line at lift may well be the cause of my current issues. The whole theory and practice of having the full length of the line (including tip?)off the water at lift and therfore modifying the line to suit is worthy of a video in and of itself. I personally would love to see loop further the Akademi series with a range of in-depth videos on such techniques, as whilst such information is available online, it tends to be fragmented and scattered across a range of sources. If it were to be collected and presented well it could become an invaluable resource. Many thanks from the Uk 🇬🇧
Oh nice see you casting again 👌 I agree fully whit shorter lines is a benefit of lift ! And if right taper a short line shoot as crazy! A line who do that is A-Jensen big fly2 those are perfect at coastal fishing. For underhand casting you need the weight at the back of your head. I've fished with and tried all kinds of heads too, what kind of line is the one you're suggesting? I've been gravitating lately to fishing floating/skating/waking casting and I am practically committed to using my one-hand rod simply because of the control issue but would like to fish my 11' switch/spey two-hand rod in the same way if possible so long as I have fair control over the line, i.e., "mendability" and/or ability to manipulate the fly at times too. Would you suggest this kind of line for the type of fishing I mention for Atlantic Salmon or Summer Steelhead?
To shorten a head without cutting a few feet can’t one pull more of the head into the rod? Obviously not too much or the necessary weight of the head will be insufficient to load the rod and shooting will be less efficient with thicker line going through the rod guides. But the alternative is cutting either the distal tapered section which effects delicacy of the landing or the proximal part of the head and now a loop to loop connection is necessary or learning to “splice” the cut ends for a smooth connection.
Sure you can pull the head in the top but it's not fun when you have the loop to loop system so why we cut to exactly the length and weight! That has whit what typ it is a float can and should be longer then a sink 3-5-8 who need to be so short that it be smooth to cast even it's a sink8" and some rods don't match whit the pre made lines ! That's why I still cut my lines and match them to specific rod.
Very rare to see someone doing the smaller loops, and with different number of fingers I suppose, thing. I learned it many years ago, to try to reduce the hooking into the grass (I only fish from the bank) but it still was extremely irritating.
Shooting line is also called 'running line'. It's the thinner line behind the thicker shooting head. The front end of the shooting HEAD is attached to the leader (towards the fly), then the shooting LINE is attached to the back of the head (towards the reel). So, from the reel - backing, shooting/running line, shooting head, leader and then fly.
I'm pretty new to this and don't understand why so many different techniques and not just always you use the single or double spey. Seems those two with cover pretty much every scenario, also I'm from Louisiana.
Hey Klaus, we all appreciate the sarcasm, but can you address the fact that some of us on the West Coast like to fish 6" entire chicken flies in the winter and we might have to adjust our casting methods due to that and other factors? Just a thought. Cheers
Tbh, in Scandiland we also fish 6" flies wheiging 1/12 oz, but with 14'+ rods, and we do it with powerful scandi lines. Or even with scandi weighted skagit setups. However, skagit IS better for casting huge chickens, that's what they were designed for. It's when you guys throw normal sized flies that you have might have something to gain by putting the skagit line on the shelf for a while.
I do love the way he cuts out the bull and just tells it how it is. Was a pleasure meeting him.

Always enjoy Klaus’s casting. However, after many years of fishing Scandi heads I moved to a 54’ Gaelforce Spey line and really enjoy casting it now.

Love this but how does the rod behave when he’s trying to put a long line out? IE we lift the rod / second lift

I hate loop connections - anything "lumpy" through the guides suck. When possible, I would spice lines, so they'd glide freely.
