The Complete Guide To Curing Separation Anxiety In Dogs
Separation anxiety is a very common behavior problem that many dogs suffer from.
Signs that your dog is suffering from separation anxiety can come in many forms.
At the core a dog that has separation anxiety has a fear of you leaving and a fear of being apart from you.
When you are working with a dog that has separation anxiety, the main concept we want to teach the dog is that “humans leaving me alone is a good thing”.
Here are some of the ways that you can work with your dog to help them over come their separation anxiety.
The time that separation anxiety in dogs occurs is when we leave and often times when we are getting ready to leave.
One of the first thats that you must do is pay attention to your behavior when you come home and when you leave.
It is very important that when it is time for you to leave your dog alone, you don’t turn leaving into this huge spectacle with long good byes and baby talk.
When you are going to leave, don’t even say anything to your dog, just walk out the door.
Going over and petting your dog, saying good bye, and giving him lots of attention right before you leave just gets him worked up and triggers the separation anxiety to begin.
When you first come home, your dog will most likely be very excited to see you.
Instead of giving him attention right away, ignore him for a minute or two until he has calmed down, THEN give him attention, pet him, anything you would like.
By staying calm when we leave and come home, you dog will start to learn that you coming home and leaving is just a normal thing that happens and it’s nothing to get worked up about.
A lot of the time they start getting anxious just watching what we are doing because they have learned that certain behaviors we do means we are going to leave soon.
If we can try to show our dog that we aren’t always going to leave just because you see us doing something, it can really help to reduce the separation anxiety from starting.
Puzzle Toys And Bones Keep A Dog With Separation Anxiety Busy!
When we leave our dogs alone we want to help them to focus on something other than the fact that they are alone.
This is where puzzle toys and bones come in very handy.
Puzzle toys are any type of dog toy that you can stuff food into and the dog then has to work on getting the food out.
The food that you stuff in the puzzle toys should be something that is VERY high value - regular dog treats are not good enough.
Chicken, steak, cheese, hotdogs, or some other kind of high quality people food is what we should be putting inside of the puzzle toys, and this is the ONLY time that our dog gets these high quality treats.
When your dog starts to see that the only time he gets these high value treats is when you leave, he will actually start looking forward to you leaving because he know he will get something great!
Bones are another good thing to keep your dog busy, I particularly like marrow bones that I get from the butcher at my local supermarket.
If you are going to give your dog bones there are two major rules you need to follow.
Rule #1: The size of the bone needs to be large to make sure their is no risk for choking. Buy a size bigger than you think you need to be safe.
Rule #2: Bones MUST BE RAW! I can not stress this enough. Cooked bones are very dangerous because they can splinter and under no circumstances should you ever give your dog a cooked bone. If you want to give your dog a bone it HAS to be raw.
The scent of lavender is known to have a very calming and almost sedating affect as it acts on the central nervous system of our dogs.
One idea to help a dog with separation anxiety is to add the scent of lavender to the area where your dog will be.
While lavender plants are NOT toxic to dogs, it is best that you put it in a place that they won’t be able to eat it as it may give them an upset stomach.
Another thing to try is burning lavender incense before you go out, or try one of those wall plugins that is lavender scented.
Recent studies have shown that classical music can lead to more relaxed and restful behavior in dogs.
Leaving some classical music on for your dog to listen to while your gone can help them to relax and it also provides mental stimulation for them.
I mention this one last because this really should be your last resort.
If you have tried everything above but have not seen improvement in your dog, then it is time to talk to your veterinarian about perhaps prescribing an anti anxiety medication to help your dog.
One sign that you may need to go this route is if your dog is not eating the food in the puzzle toys when you leave.
A dog that won’t accept food is under a tremendous amount of stress, and that is the number one sign we may need medication.

My puppy has bad separation anxiety since the day we got him. I leave for 10 minutes and leave him with my family and he goes crazy and then when I come back he pees of excitement even if I take him out to pee beforehand. These tips were definitely helpful as I will soon start a full time job as a substitute teacher leaving him alone for awhile, I will try these before I start and hope for the best!

Just seeing other people’s comments gives me hope. My dog has horrible separation anxiety. I’ve always lived close to my family & had their help with him, but I just moved to a new city with my fiancé & have no help. I can’t even leave to go to the store for 20 min without him freaking out, using the bathroom in the house (he hasn’t done that since he was a puppy), barking, etc. I thought having our other dog with him would give him a ton of comfort, but no. I feel so sorry for him. I’m hoping something will work!!

      1. Use a crate when he is alone 2. Use a bark collar. He needs something to interrupt his panic attacks (which is what SA is) so he learns to self calm himself. Or have him get used to being in a crate when you are inside, and when he gets into SA say NO and bang on the crate to get him to settle down.

what i think you forgot to say is to start training the dog by leaving them alone for a few seconds and slowly increase the time and not just leave them for 8 hours straight...
but nevertheless really really helpful video!

Mona B that's not really helpful for someone who adopts older dogs. My dogs would be in the pound of anyone else had them. my newest just chewed up my 700 dollar phone. Not his fault obviously, I left it where he could reach it, but we've had to go back to square one with the coonhound baying in the crate, and I have to leave him for eight hours while I'm at work. I don't get the option to play "who loves the crate" with him. It's his safety that matters.

@@redsquirrel6131 could you not build an outside kennel so at least your dogs outside an maybe distracted more by bird N the outside world rather than create? I'm not judging I'm just wondering is all. I'm on building an outside kennel for a rescue I have taken in he hates other dogs so can't live indoors but he will be walked an I will be bringing him indoors also I just have to swop dogs over is all. Same routine just a small adjustment.

    • @redsquirrel6131

@@doubletap1189 I potentially could do that but he's a full grown bluetick, he is VERY loud. My neighbor males sure to remind me of that weekly. Lolz. Also my town is not safe for dogs left alone. Even if I padlocked the enclosure, we have alot of mental health issues here, as we provide care for those with mental dissabilities at a large rate. So dogs are routinely poisoned, stolen, or injured purposely. I dont even let my dogs out to pee in our fenced in backyard without watching closely. So no I'm not really comfortable with leaving him outside. I'm beginning to believe his crate hate is more boredom than actual anxiety. So we will be crating him separate from our other two and giving him frozen kongs and things to chew on to keep his little mind busy. He's doing great otherwise.

I hope it all works out for you an sure it will. Just another tip though I am sure you will have already though of it don't leave collars on your pup as they can get caught an unfortunately hang themselves I am very strict with this rule as an accident nearly happened with one of mine an my ex partners dogs was a freak accident but still made me think, our young pup was standing under our older pup an she got her neck in his collar too it happened in a split second but when he lifted his head well she started to be choked it was horrible but we got her out straight away. After that an hearing some scary stories about other dog I just won't have collars on in the house it's not worth it. But anyway I hope you get to where you want to be with your pups.

I was surprised that the leave/enter is a factor. I mostly always say goodbye when I leave. When I return, they, especially my youngest dog is so excited. She jumps up at me, almost like slamming herself at me as if she is moshing.

  • @alyt.7160

Now I realized I've made some mistakes when leaving and entering the house. Almost every time I enter, I caress him, hug him and spend 30 minutes playing with him. And when I leave in the morning he's in a playful mood and not in a calm mood. He manifests anxiety for 2 days only, however I can't encourage this behavior due to the fact that we live in an appartment and I don't want to disturb my neighbours. What's odd is that he whines and barks only when I leave or when my husband and I leave together, when I'm already gone and my husband is back home then leaving again, there is no such behavior. Maybe it's all because I spoiled him too much. I believe I have to work on myself on leaving/entering and Oskar's behavior will adjust accordingly.

Thanks for mentioning giving the dog exercise. Most trainers just seem to ignore that fact. Most people “think” just taking he dog out is enough... Most dogs are stressed and act up simply because they have to much energy and NOTHING to do. I take my dog out for a walk when he starts acting up (one of he few times he leads and sniffs around) and then he sleeps or plays on his own the rest of he time.
A LOT of people that have a dog should have a cat...but mostly they think they can fix the problem with another dog.

This was good information. After recently moving into our first home, my 5 year old setter has a hard time adjusting. When I leave, she howls for hours on end for us to come home. And when we do come home, she goes crazy with excitement. So I've begun to take her back to my moms every day when we leave. Granted it's very helpful, but it's also a pain. I also heard that the type of crate you leave them in makes a difference. They like to feel safe and secure. A cave-like crate that isn't too big for them. A darker area that is cozy for them. Also, NEVER use the kennel as punishment. Don't threaten the dog with going into the crate. The crate should always be his/her safe place. Leave the door open when you are home and make it so they can always go in there when they want to.

There is something I heard a while back about dogs separation anxiety and it gave me a different perspective on what they are experiencing. It said that until relatively recently when man left the countryside to go to work in the city, dogs never left our side on the family farm. They went to work with us on that farm and watched over us just outside our front door or at our bedside as we slept. This has been the case since we domesticated "man's best friend" thousands of years ago. So it's actually unnatural for these amazing creatures to be away from us for any amount of time, much less the 8-10 hours they are separated from modern man while he goes off to work at a 9-5 job. . . . After I heard this explanation it broke my heart and gave me empathy for all dogs who experience separation anxiety. Now, whenever I'm away from my dogs I try and let them know I love and miss them too. They love us unconditionally and want nothing more than to be by our side, just like the good old days. There's a reason why they say "All Dogs Go To Heaven" and that is because they are all about love!

these tips are very helpful. we adopted a 3yr old dog from the shelter who we have found out has separation anxiety. the main problem is she has heartworms (we knew this before we adopted), she was the sweetest dog and a perfect fit for us, so we decided to treat her. the exercise part is a problem, because bshe has to have limited activity, so she has so much energy built up. she has to stay calm and quieter (which absolutely does not happen when she's alone). she goes insane while alone, won't eat or drink, won't play with toys and barks constantly. I'm hoping most of these tips will help. originally we had a gate set up so she could have the whole kitchen to roam with a dog bed, etc. well I got the extra tall gate and she jumped it last night. pee poop everywhere, curtains torn down. disaster. we will have to try a crate next, hopefully it doesn't make it worse. we will slowly build up to it and use these tips to help, really hope this works out well in time.

Lily Tse show the dog that as you are leaving, he gets rewarded. Any cues they might associate with you leaving the room, coats, keys, etc, give treats. Do exercises where you get up, pretend you are leaving, but just give the dog a treat. If you have the toy/bone while doing these exercises, hopefully the dog will get better and better at staying with the bone as you leave. Try to see at what point does your dog stop using the toy/bone, and work with that by coming back BEFORE he starts whining or BEFORE he leaves the toy. It could also not be a high enough treat value. It might help with doing exercises as you are leaving periodically throughout the day, letting your dog have the bone for a small time. If your dog isn’t very treat motivated then this might not be the best thought. Then again they could just be picky and it’s about finding the right toy/bone.
Also, this could not be separation anxiety, and your dog might just stop whining after a while. Even then this will help to calm him down right as you are leaving
Again though, do the small exercises frequently and slowly increase the amount of time you are away

@@afonsomendes92 sadly that's not the case. I have a fear reactive dog (she just freezes or wants to run away, no agression) and when she gets anxious outside about anything, she won't even take the world's tastiest treat, because anxiety has overtaken the dog and she can't focus on anything else but her fear. Same goes with separation anxiety - the dog is so stressed that even a steak right under its nose won't do the trick. Good food helps with only mild separation anxiety, but not severe.

@@afonsomendes92 I take it, you haven't had a reactive dog. A stressed dog will immediately stop taking treats when it gets stressed (even when they are offered before the stressor appears), because its attention is getting focused on stressor. Let's put it this way: if you are eating the best food ever and a bear would suddenly coming to attack you, finishing the food is the last of your concerns and your attention goes from food to escaping the situation.

Great advice but I would never leave my dog for longer than 4 hours at a time. Good advice with the music and scent, I will try these. I will also not give the cuddles as yes I think this might also be a problem. Thank you.

I took my puppy from a dog foster home about a year ago. I love him to bits; he has a great personality, and I feel that he loves our family so much. BUT he barks A LOT. . So, leaving home is always a challenge for us.
My husband and I were thinking about taking him to 'doggy school', but then again, it’s extremely expensive, and the nearest 'doggy school' is far away from us. Maybe you have some advice? THANK YOU!!!!

Very helpful and well explained great video, my dog is ok when we’re not home but when we leave he gets anxious and we’ve had times were we’ve taken him even when we didn’t plan on it matter of fact happens a lot. The leaving and entering is going to be SOO HARD for me like he’s MY BABY! But I’ll try my best for his sake. I already use high quality treats for dog agility training and tricks which I do almost everyday maybe I’ll make some king mixes or get another treat type he really likes

I have a 4 month old puppy (turning 5 month in 3 days) with really bad separation anxiety. He didn't have it AS bad before but a little over a week ago he fell and broke his front leg and needed surgery so he had to stay at the vets for about 2-3 days, after this his anxiety has gotten so much worse and it's just with me. It's gotten to the point where he doesn't let anyone else hold him and even just him being next to me in his kennel causes him to freak out and flip his shit. The vets sent me some medication to give him for when it's time to sleep but during the day I can't do anything without holding him. From the day I got him I started working on his anxiety and he used to be fine with me leaving for school and being in his crate but now all of that basically went out the window and he is 10x worse than before. It's really hard because he is supposed to be in complete cage rest but he won't stay calm unless I'm literally holding him all the time. Any tips would be greatly appreciated!

Our dog was my dads dog before my dad passed away. It was very traumatic for him when the ambulance came and got my dad. My mom and dad had to make him leave the men alone he didn't want them touching or messing with my dad. My dad passed at the hospital so now Trouble has separation anxiety when we leave.

Old video but I have this issue. Just recently moved and my 7yr old boxer freaks out when we leave for the day for work or to shopping etc that he scratches at the door and has chewed off the door frame trim around the front door. I have replaced it 3 times already and he chews it off in the same areas. I make sure to take him on a long walk or play with him in backyard to tire him out, I give him a long toy with food treats inside it, I have left music on but nothing seems to help
