How could anyone give a thumbs down to a classic video of this calibre? I wish there were a lot more Mrs Joyce's around today, the world would be a better place.
@Cockand Ball Yep. That's true. Ever decreasing levels of privacy. Constant rules that now have to be followed. An increasingly woke world where we tip toe around issues and keep silent for fear of cancel culture. A dying NHS. Crap films. Even worse music. Small businesses going under. A totally untrustworthy, deceitful and hypocritical Government. Have I missed anything? And yeah, after 13 years I'm still alive.
She’s still at the b & b and still only charges £1.80 a night. Amazing as she’s nearly 125 now, still has that kindness though and kept the Room to let sign as a momento too. Amazing lady! 👍
I DO go back in time by watching all these brilliant youtube videos that take me back to the days when life was so sweet and innocent. Honestly I sometimes get a deep yearning for the 60's, so deep that it hurts that I know they can never be repeated....except watching these youtube gems that make me happy to remember those days and sad that they have disappeared forever.
I was not even born at this time, but wow, people were so good back then!! I've noticed how different things are now to how they were. Like a different world.....
This has got to be one of the Candid Camera classics of all time. I've lost count how many times I've watched it and yet I enjoy it more and more each time.
You know, watching this again, and watching something made well before I was born, you can tell people back then were better people. obviously not everyone, but the majority. Better manners, and more honest and had good morals
"I've never heard of anything like it in all my life" lol that's exactly what my nan used to say lol I'm sure if she could come back in todays ridiculous society, she would be saying it every single day. Lovely genuine decent lady on this video though as was my lovely nan.
Ah what a lovely lady! Not one expletive spoken either. The days when people could conduct themselves in a civil manner whilst still annoyed and under pressure.
Ha ha ha, have you predicted the future with the teenage mothers nowadays? They can’t even string a sentence together without a few expletives, let alone hold a conversation without one 😂😂❤️🙏🏽
This prank probably goes into lots of peoples top ten. It got me laughing quite a bit when the lady said "Give the gentleman back his money" Getting angrier each time.
why were they the best days? Thatcher at the helm, rubbish piled up on the streets, shit cars that always broke down, no central heating, racism and homophobia at levels that would not be accepted in todays society? Yeah, the good old fucking days
Don't miss the racism, the football hooligans, the strikes, streets full of rubbish, the electricity going off at ten o'clock, jimmy savile, the violent police.
I've just watched again this lovely landlady and how she kept her cool is beyond me. Did this ever get put onto a compilation dvd ..of best bits ? I'm probably guessing not. Has Mrs Joyce any family ? We need more people like her who don't use bad language , very professional and deserves an award . RIP and thank you all involved in that classic Candid Camera 📷 archive footage .
She would have grown up through tough times and won't take nonsense from anyone. I'm guessing she was in her mid 50s to early 60s meaning she must have been born in the 1910s or 1920s and so she was old enough to remember the war which undoubtedly made her the resilient woman she was by this point.
These are priceless, real social history of what real people were like back then, she was lovely but not unique, most (not all) but most people were as honest and decent as her. Filmed when the working class had two things they don't have anymore, work or class.
God bless her what a lovely person sadly no longer with us , I grew up in London in the 50s and 60s and there were lots of lovely genuine men and women with hearts of gold that would give you their last penny , sadly the uk has now been turned into a hell hole by the failures of succesive governments, RIP UK gone for ever but not forgotten .
I agree, it was a very different world back then. I was very young when this would have been filmed but I recognise elements here that I remember from my childhood. People were a lot more innocent in hidden camera pranks shown here. I'm glad this lady was a good sport and that people can still enjoy her reaction here 45 years later :-)
G Cook from the Blair government onwards ALL those in power have encouraged vast numbers of immigrants to our nation often without a job to come to and leap frogging the housing wait lists. All this has rapidly destroyed our British heritage and way of life. The real decline started in the early 90s and is continuing at a much faster rate. What was once largely peaceful towns and areas of our country are now hot beds of criminality and violence that has coincided with the vast numbers of immigrants often with no background checks that are still flooding into our already extremely over crowded nation.
0:25: This is a key part of how this prank works so well. Mrs Joyce recognises Arthur Atkins, but her mind suggests to her it is because he has stayed before - not that she has watched him on TV.
If Mrs Joyce would have rung the police it was guaranteed that they would have arrived and arrested that man. Not like today’s police who can’t be arsed with just about anything these days

Sounds just like my nan, she was a Lancashire lass with a B&B. This lady sounds like she is also from Accrington. And I agree, they knew how to get mad but stay cool in them days 🙂
"He doesn't belong here", "I'll ring the police", "What on earth are you thinking about paying 5 pound for one night ?" Three of the best lines ever on CC

Correct
spot on brilliant it was 5 pounds lol
Because it's terrible.
Yes, a lovely English lady. We had neighbours like her growing up in the 60s and 70s.
Very funny clip. That lady is the salt of the earth. That generation will never be replaced.
No they won't be replaced, I miss my aunts and uncles and Grandma seemingly more as time goes on, it was a different era, a different way of life.
Now that is what you call pure class, and no amount of money nor training can buy it.What a proper real person she is also.
I remember this prank the first time it was on tv. Arthur Atkins was brilliant as the rogue " sub landlord" Thanks for uploading.
It certainly was - it used to be amazing. I sometimes feel like crying for what we have lost.

Lovely lady - all ladies who ran B&B's in the 70's seemed to be like Mrs. Joyce! Scene brilliantly played by Arthur Atkins!
He never broke character
what a lovely traditional classy lady.
My goodness! It’s like sweet music to my ears how eloquent and fluent those folks of old spoke.
Er...you mean 'eloquently and fluently'. Verbs take adverbs, not adjectives.

The landlady repeated twice what she had said before & never lied even a single word. Wow, she is so honest.
