  • For the 2020 model year, Cirrus has built in what it calls Cirrus IQ. Using cellular communications, a smartphone app and cloud storage, it has real-time trend and data monitoring that ultimately can be used to keep tabs on how Cirrus pilots are flying these aircraft, how the engine and systems are performing and to provide early warning for component failures.
    In this video report Aviation Consumer Editor Larry Anglisano spent some time with a new SR22T with Cirrus' Cliff Allen.

    I bet it will drive your insurance costs up after a few rough landings then alerting your insurance company of how you have been operating your aircraft or like someone else posted, well Mr. Smith your warrantee has just been voided because of your aircrafts operation. We don’t care if it was you behind the stick you allowed your aircraft to be operated outside of Cirrus’s design envelope so we’ve decided to end your engine warrantee and we’ve alerted your insurance company too. Oh yea this will make you a better pilot because you can’t afford to fly your aircraft any longer. Sounds like a way to gather information but also a way to escape liability if they can or at least lower their culpabilities in certain incidences. Possibly? I know engine manufactures would like data on engine performances but should the rest of the aircraft be subject to the same gathering of information? IDK? The owners should have a right to privacy or at least have the right to the decision on whether this information should be available from the aircraft operation if it hasn’t been involved in a incident and it’s just daily operations. Pilots have bad days sometimes so should they be penalized for this? Training yes, penalties? Again IDK. If you take the lid off this container you’ll never get it back on. One pilots opinion!

      Ehhhh... these are $750k aircraft and there are only so many people on the planet who can afford them. I don't think Cirrus is interested in alienating their clients like that. We're not talking about the car industry here, where they have millions of customers and sell a new vehicle every ten seconds. Cirrus needs to keep their customers happy and flying, otherwise they won't be in business for long. Snitching on them to their insurance company, voiding a warranty arbitrarily, and grounding them isn't a recipe for success. There are plenty of options in aviation, especially for wealthy new-aircraft buyers.

That would mean no predicting of replacement or failure for specific aircraft or instruction directed at specific pilot deficits, but would allow them to monitor components and flight characteristics that are problematic and pilot performance issues that are problems fleet-wide. That could inform which suppliers they use, aircraft design and the structure of their training program. Data that's identified with a particular pilot and aircraft is probably going to be viewed as a privacy invasion by a lot of owners.

    It makes a lot of sense to give a plane a nervous system to tell if it is feeling good. An engine gives off a myriad of vibrations with many subtle details we don't pick up on. It is entirely possible that vibration/sound sensors on the engines will make it possible to predict most if not all engine problems way ahead of time so they never happen. Like a cracked bell has a very different sound so will an engine with loose bolts or a slightly different scraping sound if a piston head is rocking. It could also tell if a propeller is unbalanced and probably if ice is forming on it.

    OK ... will all this “tech” result in a meaningful and identifiable reduced insurance cost - at the time of purchase? If so, that would “get potential buyers off the dime” and become purchasers.
    And even though the data isn’t being sent *directly* to the FAA, for those “in the know”, the insurance companies exert their “influence” through higher premiums.
    This is why a discount that recognizes the tech *must* be offered at signing.
    I think it’s time aircraft owners start “pushing back.”

    • @PepsiMagt
      @PepsiMagt 4 роки тому +2

      Pushing back requires leverage. And insurance companies have all the leverage, and can set prices almost at will. New technology won't change that.

    • @flitetym
      @flitetym 4 роки тому +1

      PepsiMagt there’s one unfailing form of leverage: competition. Let Cessna, Piper or TBM start offering a discounted premium, and watch how the “game” changes.
      At its most fundamental level, insurance is risk arbitration for a given market. It is also a form of banking, where benefits are offered in the cost of purchase.
      Insurance premiums remain stagnant or “firm” in the small airplane market because no effective competitor enters *and* when risk is not properly calculated, or is using outdated financial models.
      This brings me to the CFR 135 market, where the most aggressive “regulators” aren’t necessarily the FAA, but the audit firms.
      I submit that Cirrus has already shown the way and has done some of the “heavy lifting.” CFR 91 should follow the “audit path”, and start bringing down the cost of flying.

    • @PepsiMagt
      @PepsiMagt 4 роки тому

      Cirrus sells the most popular and one of the most expensive single piston GA aircraft. Why would they want to bring down the cost of flying?
      As for insurance, general aviation is a tiny rounding error for the insurance industry. And GA insurance will remain expensive for that reason alone.

    • @flitetym
      @flitetym 4 роки тому

      PepsiMagt ... hmmm ... that’s not taking the “long”, or strategic view.
      Looking at the auto industry, many manufacturers have ceased to operate by adopting that view. The list is long and storied.
      To that, I respectfully say “balderdash.” I say to Cirrus, “go for it”, and become the “everyman” aircraft.
      .... but then, that’s my own “2-cents.”

      @@flitetym General Aviation clearly does not work like the auto-industry, when the most expensive single piston (the cirrus) has a commanding marketshare of 30%. You wouldn't expect an everyman-car from Lamborghini or Ferrari either, would you?

    Many airlines and some military have been doing the same thing for years with the FOQA (Flight Operations Quality Assurance) Program. It's been credited with increasing safety and it's easy to see why - if one doesn't fly according to the rules and standards it will rat you out to management. Glad to see the same concept coming to General Aviation and good for Cirrus on leading the way!

    Always a few bad apples that ruin it for everyone. If this gets rid of the bad apples it is good for everyone. Bad pilots like bad doctors should be weeded out. Just because someone has money does not mean they should be allowed to fly their own aircraft. The death rate in GA tells me there are way to many non proficient pilots.

    Jesus this is complete nonsense. I'd take a new or used DA42 NG or VI / used G3/G5 / Mooney Ovation or Acclaim over this new Apple crap any day. You Americans have great aviation, stuff like this will kill it. Spend 20 hours a year on training, it's not really an unaffordable option for someone spending 100 grand or more on a bird. Leave this Chinese level supervision to te Chinese.

    This fascinates me and I think it's an interesting idea. I've worked in commercial aviation for 30+ years and it's safer than ever. If GA wants to be as safe and predictable as the Part 121 carriers, let's copy as much as we can.
    For those worried about privacy, you can most likely just turn this off or buy a different airplane.

    Cirrus are promoting this data mining app as a "benefit", but it is just a snoop fest. The Cirrus is a painfully dull aircraft built for mostly dilettante pilots who are not really very interested in the art of flying and who have more cash than talent or common sense. To be fair safety has improved with better training, but it is still a dull, boring, over-priced aircraft that is about as inspiring to fly as a milk crate with wings. "Our fleet" is NOT your fleet. You make it and someone buys it. It's not a "fleet". What bullshit.
