  • Are you deficient in iron? Are your ferritin levels low? Then watch this video to see me sharing about my experience of doing a blood test and then undergoing an iron infusion.
    I will tell you about:
    - how to prepare yourself for infusion
    - side effects that I have experienced and how long it lasted for me and,
    - the cost of procedure and how to get it even cheaper to literally $5.60 per infusion.
It`s been 6 full days since I had my infusion done and I`ll be filming another updating video in two weeks’ time to let you know how I feel.
If you have any questions, please leave it in comments below.
    Thank you for watching!

I tried getting my iron infusion yesterday. My ferritin levels are very low and I have thalassemia trait. The combination of two has been leading to very low hemoglobin. I am scheduled to go through a major surgery coming month, so the doctor wanted to up the iron content. Hematologist asked me to get at least one dose of iron infusion. I had a bad intuition about it, but decided to go ahead with it. I was told the severe side effects are rash etc. I wasn't told that one of the side effects could be anaphylactic shock, which is life threatening. The probability of this side effect is extremely low. Within a couple of seconds of it starting, I started getting chest pain. I rang the bell. Another second passed and I had gone into a shock. I thought I was getting a heart attack. My body was shaking and I could not breathe...breathing was very labored and heavy. It felt like someone is squeezing my chest from both the sides. I was getting an anaphylactic shock. Thankfully, all of the nurses, including the head nurse, quickly got into action. I got saved. A few more seconds and I would have died. Nurses tell me that my face was very red. After 24 hours, I still have labored breathing and a numb hand. Of course, my case was recorded and would go to FDA. But, I thought I should share it. Do it only if you really need it. Try taking a massive dose of supplements, even if it makes you feel sick. I know the probabilities are really low of getting a shock. I got Feraheme (costs about 4000 bucks a dose; covered by my insurance) . It is supposed to have really low risk and yet I had a near death experience.

With thalassemia, you have to be especially careful with taking iron/ iron infusion. Too much can lead to it storing in your liver.

I had my 6 days ago: everyday I had one symptom. From feeling nauseous flu symptoms tired, heart palpitations, headaches, fever, dizziness, pain everywhere more on my neck jaw, stomach aches, hot flashes. My anxiety got worse I feel weird every time I eat I feel tired and nauseous and anxious. I have this thing my heart feels like it’s doing flips and makes me tired and dizzy then goes away. I don’t recommend it please do better with your diet if possible. My low iron is due to fibroid, I hate being a woman. Ghetto.

I had my first iron infusion done 2 days ago and the infusion itself went absolutely fine but even after reading up about the potential side effects before having it done I still wasn't prepared for just how bad these side effects might be. I feel like I have all the symptoms of a bad flu minus the congestion and my body (particularly my arms) are aching so bad that it's almost unbearable. The pain is so intense that it's near impossible to get comfortable enough to fall asleep and when I eventually do fall asleep out of sheer exhaustion I'm woken up after about an hour due to the discomfort and the cycle continues until I have to be up in the morning. I can't wait to finally start to feeling the positive effects of the infusion and get back to feeling like myself again. This is not fun at all so I'm hoping all of this is going to be worth it!

I don't feel any difference with my hair and nails and overall with my other symptoms such as tingling in feet. My nails are still brittle, white and have vertical ridges and my hair is still falling out in clumps(eyebrows, eyelashes and body hair also). I did every blood test that exist, everything great except my ferritin was 30 (serum iron 25 below the normal range) when symptoms started and stayed this way after 10 months of oral supplementation with 4 different brands and I'm vitamin D deficienct. does iron infusion work quickly and have immediate effect or is it gradual and takes weeks? I had iron deficiency without anemia(Hb is normal). did you notice any improvement in your hair and nails? Thank you!

Hi there! I'm not a specialist in this field, but for myself personally I did the iron infusion because I was feeling fatigued in most of the time, so when I did my blood test I found that I needed to correct my iron levels. It took me about a month to feel the difference in the way I felt.
As for your hair and nails, I don't think that iron would be a solution on its own. Try drinking a bone broth as I recommended in one of my videos showing people how I cook it. Bone broth can definitely improve the health of your nails, skin, hair and everything basically in your body. It's a very powerful drink contaoning minerals, nutrients and vitamins.

@@E10l I think you should try to find the real reason to why your hair and nails out of a sudden became like that. Or maybe your diet wasn`t balanced enough due to be vegetarian. I`m not sure. With bone broth you will start noticing the difference in about a month or so if you consume it on a daily bases.
Try to also add supplements like: silica, biotin, zinc, vitamic C. These help in hair growth and nail health.

GIven the fasting etc and 1 hour for the solution to be infused that sound like the older solution and procedure of two different flow rates. Slower at first to see if one can tolerate the infusion and if OK the rate is increased. The newer and better solution takes 15 minutes in a day ward given by a nurse. There is no need to fast or remain after the 15 minutes to be observed. After mine I just rode home on my bicycle and had no side effects. My hematologist said she could put more iron in to me in 15 minutes than a whole year of supplements.

    • @yana.miller
      @yana.miller  8 місяців тому

On a ward we still do two infusion types: slow and fast. Slow is at a rate of 40ml/hr for 15 minutes, then rate increases to 120ml/hr if pt tolerates it well. It goes for an hour.
Fast infusion would start at 40ml/hr for 15 minutes as well, and then increases rate to 250ml/hr.
As a registered nurse myself I haven't seen anyone infusing the whole bag in 15 minutes, and I work on a ward. The nurse needs to monitor for adverse effects for at least 15 minutes since the infusion started, hence why it starts in a slower rate.
