I'm a professional Storyteller here in Ireland. It's always interesting to see the differences in the Scottish Fionna stories. In Ireland Fionna has two dogs, Bran and Sceloáin and they're actually his cousins that were turned into dogs

These stories were common from Kintyre to Sutherland (as the place-names will tell you) but along with other elements of Gaelic culture, they were brutally beaten out of the population of Scotland. Yes, the stories can now be found in English, but without the backbone of Gaelic culture and language to support them they remain as a niche interest for those into old legends. Imagine them being part of the Scottish school curriculum alongside Greek and Norse mythology (which are taught to kids)?

When he was he would record stories on a cassette, and send them to us. So we could still get bedtime stories from him. These are very reminiscent of them. I appreciate them greatly, thank you for reminding me of them. Keep up the great work you do. Godbless!!

      Kiltman 801 :-
      Peas porridge hot,
      Peas porridge cold,
      Peas porridge in the pot.
      Nine days old.
In the old days, a pot of porridge was often the only thing on the stove for the family to eat.
The men of the house would gather whatever they could, to add some nourishment to the pot.
Peas in the old days meant beans...very high in protein.
If the hunter in the family was able to catch a rabbit (or whatever)...then the meat was a special addition to the porridge.
The missus of the household would add whatever vegetables and herbs that could grow in the garden and fields.
When the fire was burning the porridge was hot.
And when wood, coal or peat was scarce, then the fire and porridge was cold.
And that pot of porridge would sit by the fireplace, something added each day to "spice up" the meal.
Sometimes that porridge would be added to, and then sit by the fire, and be the main meal for up to a week or more, with whatever the family could add to the pot to keep it nourishing and different.
Are we spoiled today or what? 🥣😁

Excellent - thank you! I thought that I would mention: Finn's adventure sounds suspiciously like the sort of 'coded/riddle recipes' used by alchemists in the Middle Ages and earlier. For instance - if you are distilling very gently, over a long period of time, sometimes raising the temperature, sometimes lowering it, you are a tracker following a mist at sea. And, when you use a fixative agent to prevent the distillation of one of the compounds, it is as if you have a grip on the giant's hand which would otherwise pull and separate the distillate from its 'parent' stew. If that grip is circumvented, though, you would need a flask to catch the distillate, covered in ice and slippery as an eel. Then, in that still flask, you would have collected the original volatiles, along with any *other* compounds you managed to steal! Unfortunately, one of those compounds can oxidize, a grey dog coming from the water, that puppy is lost; and another component can burn your hand with a tiny spot, probably a base pH because water makes that *worse* ; yet, the alchemist only keeps one of those distillates for himself, as his trusty servant during other adventures.
