  • IN WHICH our intrepid recreatrix rushes through making a 14th Century supportive chemise based on medieval Bohemian manuscripts commissioned by King Wenceslaus (yes THAT King Wenceslaus). Join me as I contemplate whether or not "bathhouse keeper's guild" is a euphamism and think too much about the location of my chest.

    thank you
    that other bathing equipment you mention that girls carry - is a handful of branches of birch, oak and some others. You gather them in spring and dry. For the bathing you put them into hot water to become softer and then you litterally slap people all over the body in the hot sauna with that branches. It is like a very hadrcore massage. People come out of bath red hot and cool themselves with buckets of cold water or even frozen water in winter. It is common amongst slavonic nations

    I love how your chemise turned out! It's really cool to see your interpretation of these 'bathhouse dresses'.
    I really love 14th century supportive garments. I'm non-binary and have been toying around with adapting supportive shift/kirtle patterns for use as chest binders. Seeing people make supportive garments/historical recreations like this is really inspiring (and informative/entertaining)!

    That slightly odd looking sponge thing makes me think of the birch twig bunches (called "vihta" or "vasta" in Finnish) that are still used in saunas in Finland 🤔
    Why yes, we do sit naked in hot rooms and thwack one another with twigs to this day 😂 It's not as scary as it might sound, honest!

    Ah, this is great! My knowledge is mostly based in the Age of Stays, and as someone who's busty, my first question is ALWAYS, "Well, what did they use for support?" in other eras. 🤣 This is an awesome resource, thanks!

    Ooh, nice. Spring is just getting going here in the southern hemisphere, so it's great to have some summer wear inspiration. The finished garment is lovely, and would make an everyday summer dress with minor modifications.

    I have a pattern I created for the bathhouse babes chemise and cut out before Pennsic and didn't get sewn. So it's in my pile of UFOs to be finished before next summer. I'm doing a new wardrobe as I realized I hadn't made new garb for myself in over 13 years. So yeah if my pattern works I'll be making a few of these for camp lounging in addition to wear as my base layer.

    I am drinking lime Perrier. With a dash of apple cider vinegar.
    That looks cool for summer events. The year I did Pennsic in 87 I made garb based on "spring" by boticelli . They were also in their underwear but I didn't really care. Survival is more important, especially when one is from a climate that is much closer to the Arctic.

    ive been drinking lots of coffee lol. but most of the tea i drink now is from this amazing shop called alchemy of avalon. my favorites from them are anne boleyn (an earl grey rooibos with dried blueberries and elderberries), and uncle irohs jasmine dragon. very different but both wonderful. i also added some luster dust to a few cups to make my tea sparkle, because i saw you had a tea with that stuff in it, and it was so cool.

    HEB orange sparkling water, cranberry juice, ice, a squeeze of stevia and a shot of vodka. This is an item I need to make just for everyday wear…as I get older, bras have just totally lost what little appeal they ever had. The arthritis in my hands makes corset ties difficult… I wear mostly dresses (save for when woodworking) and this seems a good solution. Thanks and let’s get fall here asap…Texas needs cooler weather.

    • @OpusElenae
      @OpusElenae  2 роки тому +1

      For a modern adaptation, I could see using a separating zipper (heavy duty) and adding a loop of ribbon around the pull for arthritis-friendly accessibility! That’ll save you time and trouble instead of lacing!
