My micro SD is arriving tomorrow, I see that you used a USB dongle to use a mouse to navigate through windows after installing it, do we need to use one or the touch screen or trackpad works fine to continue the setup and installation of the drivers? Thank you so much, sincerely this goodwill is what makes it all worth it.

      Thanks. BTW we have a revised video of the SD Card Dual Boot here.. ua-cam.com/video/PJ3Nzx2pkzs/v-deo.html. And to answer your question, the SD card must remain inserted while running Windows. If you remove it you will basically no dual boot. You can also try an internal SSD dual boot if you have a 256 GB or higher Steam Deck, which is what I prefer and recommend most. In the pinned comment we state that this is not the method we recommend for long term or regular use dual booting because it can accelerate wear and tear on the SD card. For long term dual booting or regular use we recommend partitioning the internal storage. Having said that I have used both methods with zero issues.

      Hey Andy, its around the 9:00 minute mark. We used Rufus to create a Windows to Go Image on the SD Card. That was the installation. Then we inserted the SD card into the Steam Deck and finalized the the process. Since Windows is installed on the SD Card itself and not the internal SSD, all that was necessary after creating the image was to finalize the process after the SD card was inserted.

    Solution that addressed this perfectly is Nvidia Geforce Experience via Moonlight

    • @OVERKILLGAMING786
      @OVERKILLGAMING786  Рік тому +4

      I've used Moonlight in the past on my phone connected to my RTX 3090 rig. Its something i'll probably cover in the future, but its not the best solution for playing Windows games on the Steam Deck for several reasons: Moonlight allows you to connect remotely to another PC running the game, which requires you to have another PC. For some, the Steam Deck is their only PC. Moonlight also requires an internet connection if you are away from home. The quality of the game will depend on the strength of the internet connection. If you are in a location with a crappy signal, the game quality will not be good. One thing Moonlight is good for is for streaming games from your gaming PC (for those that have one) with high graphics and high resolution and without taxing the Steam Deck's battery. That's the key benefit of Moonlight.

    • @OVERKILLGAMING786
      @OVERKILLGAMING786  Рік тому

      When you set up the dual boot Windows becomes the primary OS and will automatically boot into Windows unless SteamOS is selected from the boot menu. If you want to stay in SteamOS most of the time it is better to put the Steam Deck to sleep rather than power it off. It will then boot straight into SteamOS when turning it back on. This is the only way I know to stay in SteamOS. Otherwise you will have to select SteamOS from the boot menu when powering it on.

      Yes. I suggest a very fast SD card. Read/Write speeds close to 100 MB/s. Otherwise performance will suffer. Max Read/Write speed for the the SD Card slot on the Steam Deck is 104 MB/s. The best dual boot method is a partition on the internal SSD. I will be putting together a tutorial soon on how to do that.

    Thank you for this video! I just purchased my steam deck and it’s arriving in the mail soon so I’m trying to figure out what I need to get in order to prep it once I get it in the mail. I’m not the most informed player when it comes to a lot of the technical terms and processes with gaming (I wasn’t even sure what SD card to get to run windows and had to research the differences) so this video is incredibly helpful! A lot of the games I’m planning on playing aren’t available on SteamOS and I want to add Windows 11 but I’m afraid of messing up the internal software by attempting a more complicated method, but this looks very straightforward and easy to swap between both systems.
    I wanted to ask you, do you have to get something like the Ankr hub for this process? I have a usb-c to SD card reader adapter that lets me plug in micro usb and regular usb at the same time. Would I be okay just using that for this process or would you say get the hub and use that?
    I also wanted to ask if I’d be able to use Rufus and download Windows on a Mac (I know shoot me 🥲) or is there something else you’d recommend doing this process on a Mac?
    Thank you again for such a good video! I subbed because I’ll keep watching your steam deck content in the future!

      Hey, you're welcome Bianca. Yes, you could use the USB card reader for the entire process, actually. You can plug that into your PC, install Windows on it and then plug the SD Card into your Steam Deck. The Anker hub is really for being able to plug a keyboard and mouse into your Steam Deck to make the process easier, but its not required. As for RUFUS I think you can use it on a Mac, but the Windows Media Creation tool is a Windows app so i'm not sure if it will run on a Mac or not. Won't hurt to try though. I hope you enjoy your new Steam Deck and if you ever have questions feel free to ask. If I can help, I definitely will.

For anyone else using a Mac to do this method, you can use Mac OS software to burn windows 10 or 11 on a portable usb, but the issue with the steam deck runs into the partition because it needs the NFTS setup, if you can figure out away around this you don’t need windows as I was able to get it loaded on my deck, but the right drivers were missing to get it to finish installing. Yes. I downloaded all of the software needed on a PC. I installed Windows to the SD card itself and then inserted the SD card into the Steam Deck. We are using a version of Windows 10 called Windows20Go, which is not installed on the actual machine, but on the SD card directly and can be used on any machine. So, you could essentially transfer your Windows from PC to PC on an SD card. Hey C M. Yes. The first part was done on a computer. We actually installed Windows on to an SD card rather than on to the Steam Deck itself, so 90% of the install process is on a PC and only the final steps take place on the Steam Deck. If you plan to use this method, first know that this method requires a very fast SD card, one that has a read speed and write speed that matches or comes close to the rated speed of the SD card on the Steam Deck, which is around 100 MB. You don't want to use any SD card, especially one that is slow because the performance will not be good. Also, this method can potentially lead to premature wear of the SD card because of the constant reading and writing by the OS. Having said that, I used this method myself and had no issues. I eventually switched to the internal SSD partition because the performance overall is much better and I won't have to worry about premature wear of my SD card down the road. You will need an SD card reader or a USB hub with an SD card slot to install Windows on the SD card. Hey Spencer, first I recommend using a much larger SD card if you want to go with the SD card method. At least 256 so you will have room for games. 32 GB will not be enough. You may also want to consider partitioning the internal drive if you have the 256 GB or higher Steam Deck. The performance will be better than running from an SD card and is better for long-term use. We have a video on that.
      SSD Dual Boot:
      ua-cam.com/video/ntvCVHP0AtY/v-deo.html
      To answer your other question, no. Windows will not see the games you have stored in SteamOS because Windows uses the NTFS file system and cannot access the EXT4 file system. Most people use SteamOS to play certain games and Windows to play certain games (games that don't run on SteamOS, like Call of Duty, Destiny, Fortnite, etc.). What you can do is partition the internal storage and then use an SD card to store the games for both operating systems. Here is a video on how to partition an SD card and share it between SteamOS and Windows.

    Does this allow you to switch between steamOS and windows? And if so, how? Or is it connected to the SD card?

    • @OVERKILLGAMING786
      @OVERKILLGAMING786  Рік тому +1

      Yes, you can switch between them by going into the boot menu. To access the boot menu, hold Volume down + power when booting and then release when you hear the chime and then select SteamOS. You only need to do this to boot into SteamOS or Windows

    I just slapped a 1 TB SSD on the back of my deck with super tape, and I just plug it in anytime I need to put into windows. You'll destroy any SD card if you install windows on it.

    • @OVERKILLGAMING786
      @OVERKILLGAMING786  Рік тому

      I have heard that the SD card method can lead to premature wear of the SD card. I didn't have any issues using the SD Card method personally and so far I haven't heard of a single case from anyone who has tried that this has happened to either. Either way, we decided to switch to the internal SSD partition method for better performance and I have been recommending others to do the same. I may ever upgrade the internal SSD at some point to bring it up 4 or 5 TB

    I thought when it’s dual boot when you turn on the steam deck you get two options steam os and windows, what if I want to run steam os? And do I have to use the as card every time I wanna run windows?

    • @OVERKILLGAMING786
      @OVERKILLGAMING786  Рік тому +1

      If you power on the unit with the SD card inserted it will go straight to Windows. To access the boot menu you will hold volume down + power until you hear the chime and then release and then it will give you the option to choose the operating system to boot into.

      Yes, upu can switch between SteamOS and Windows by holding the volume down and power until you hear the chime and then release. This will bring up the boot selector and then you can select which OS to boot into

    • @OVERKILLGAMING786
      @OVERKILLGAMING786  Рік тому

      If you have Windows on an SD card, it will ask you for a Windows key. But, if you WIndows on the internal storage, windows sees the device as having a screen smaller than 9" and its totally free. As far as the Gamepass games, make sure the date and time is set correctly. Otherwise, it will prevent XBOX games from working. I have a video about that: ua-cam.com/video/wc2L62Ae9A0/v-deo.html
