So underrated in the US but popular and mainstream in Okinawa.

Very shallow clip. I know 3 minutes are short, but I was expecting way more details.

I had a gentleman from a karate tournament read the kanji on my gi, which was shorin ryu, and ask why I was studying Shaolin ryu?
Shorin says Shaolin in this gentleman’s Chinese language apparently

Shorin does also mean Shaolin. Kanji often have different meanings. Shorinji kempo is Shaolin temple fist way. Shorin is Shaolin. Just like karate means both empty hand and Chinese hands, depends on the Kanji, though the pronunciation is the same. The Japanese didn't like the Chinese, so the Okinawans had to change the kanji and/or meaning to make it more palatable to the Japanese.

SHORIN Ryu is Okinawa style of Karate . Shotokan is Japanese style karate introduced by Gichin Funakushi , an Okinawan master of SHORIN Ryu from the Shuri Island of Okinawa. I just want to correct your statement for History authenticity . OSS master Unis@ of KAMIIZA Unisa Dojo in SF , Cali USA

Okinawa is part of Japan since at least 150 years, so please, spare us your "accuracy". Don't be silly.
And Funakoshi did both Shorin-Ryu and Shorei-Ryu, Mr. Accuracy.

No it's not generic. There are nowadays a lot of different variations of Shorin-Ryu, yes, but that's the state of Karaté in general. And all of Karaté originates in China. Original Kanji is "chinese hand". But that doesn't make it any less japanese, like Taekwondo is korean even though it is 95% Shotokan.
Karaté is a japanese blend of several kungfu styles.
Taekwondo is a korean style of Karaté.

@@sassuki Okinawa was a separate country (the ryukyu kingdom) with its own culture and language distinct from Japan.
In 1609, Japan invaded and conquered the islands in an event known as the Satsuma Invasion.
Thereafter Okinawa became a vassal state but maintained some independence.
I’ll save you the rest of the details but will encourage you to web search this cuz it has a direct impact on the creation of karate.
Karate was created in Okinawa. Funakoshi brought Okinawa karate to Japan but changed it dramatically from what he learned.
Japanese karate is quite different in its approach and technique from Okinawa karate.

There is no such thing as Okinawa karaté and Japan karaté!
Okinawa karaté is Japan kataté! There is no difference! There are just styles that spreaded to the rest of Japan, and some that are practiced mainly in Okinawa and did not found much success outside of that province.
