  • Today on FFRF's "Ask an Atheist," FFRF Staff Attorney Chris Line and Anne Nicol Gaylor Legal Fellow Sammi Lawrence will discuss “religious freedom” and how the phrase has been co-opted and weaponized by the religious right. There have been several recent egregious examples of how this hyper religious minority is acting to force American society into its image - to the detriment of the rest of us.

I really respect your work. Thank you for standing up for those of us who do not believe in mythical, wrathful, insane gods written about in books that are 3,000 years old.

Where's Chris? Oh yay, he's back this week!
I look forward to this show each week and have joined my local Free Thought Society and the FFRF national organization.

Monroe, NC got a new mayor a few months ago, and he speaks as if has been specially chosen by God to "clean up Dodge" (aka Monroe, NC). There have been 3 regular City Council meetings since he took office and 3 similarly minded preachers that led the opening prayer; one (Jonathan DeVore) was an out of town anti-abortion activist for Love Life out of Charlotte, NC, one was a low level minister (Zach Kerns) at Shining Light Baptist Church (announced, however, as the chaplain for the Monroe Fire Department), and the lead minister (Tim Cruse) at Shining Light Baptist Church.
The last Council meeting also featured a gospel singing group from a local Baptist affiliated university (Wingate University) which was spearheaded by a member of the City Council. She was recently interviewed by the mayor on his UA-cam channel and boasted of getting the gospel group to perform at the meeting. She also claimed to be a member of the Shining Light Baptist Church and that she, like the mayor, thinks God has specially called her to the Council.
The FFRF delivered a letter to the Council and its individual members, including the mayor, on February 15, 2024 and expressing concern about the Council's antics regarding such things.
I have no record of any public response the Monroe, NC City Council has made to the FFRF letter.
The next regular Council meeting is next week.
    We'll see how that goes.

I can agree with being active in your community, but a lot of folks have to be careful. If you live in a small city or town, or a rural county, there can be ... backlash for that kind of complaint. It's illegal, but it's really hard to prove if the abusers are careful.

Maybe keeping freedom from religion is worth worrying about.
