    This is a great build with many smart decisions... That said, I think the cabinet between the fridge and the bed should have been a shower/bath. Big quality of life changer.

    • @Lifepothesis
      @Lifepothesis  2 роки тому +6

      Thanks! We appreciated having the extra storage space, but we get that other people would rather have a shower. That would have taken up much more space than the tall cabinet, which was not worth it to us.

      I’m working on a similar van design and after being in a smaller van that couldn’t support a shower I still prefer the gym method of showering, gives you a reason to leave the van and be around people 😂

    That’s a great van build. I love the bulkhead door and the way you made it flow with the space.
    The big unseen cost of course is the time spent building out your van/home. Even if you allowed a super conservative $10 hr. In time you still hit another $11,000 in labor costs. This is something that outsiders looking in never seem to understand. They just ask if you’ll build them one. Give them a $25,000 labor bill and see if they are still interested.
    I could see myself very comfortable in your conversion. You both did a truly amazing job.

    • @Lifepothesis
      @Lifepothesis  2 роки тому

      The bulkhead pocket door is one of our favorite features of the space, I just loved how it made it feel like a studio apartment instead of a vehicle. Great point, we dedicated a lot of time to this build in order to save money, but the value of that time was not included in our overall costs.

    21:00 A note about the fantastic fan, the remote control units are not able to open the lid part way. So with the remote, the lid is either all the way up or all the way down. I think there is an option to manually turn a knob, but the one I installed was too far for me to reach. Your choice of a manual one was good for your application.

    Thank you for the tour of your home. I really appreciated not only your thriftiness but also you sharing the sourcing such as the sink at a yard sale, windows at a salvage yard ect. The simplicity yet high functionality is very impressive. If I were to make one comment it would be about the window tinting. Make sure to check the laws in the different states because they vary greatly in the allowable tint and the enforcement. Great video and you just got another subscriber 👍

    • @Lifepothesis
      @Lifepothesis  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks for your comment! We definitely were aiming for a simple yet functional build. As for the tint, we decided it was worth the risk since it gets sooo hot in the front of a van due to the huge windows. Luckily we didn't end up having any issues on the road as we traveled through 40+ states! 😊

    Great build and video. Can you share how deep your kitchen cabinets/counter top is? I love your layout. The only change I think we would make for us, actually 2, is I prefer our bed east to west but we are both short! Also we would probably make the toilet either in the couch or as a pull out from under the sliding table. Our thoughts on a toilet is that we, as older people, need in the night place to pee and would probably use it for #1 all the time unless emergency. You did a great job with your build and with your explanation of your choices.

    • @Lifepothesis
      @Lifepothesis  Рік тому

      Thanks so much! The countertop is standard depth, 24". Our countertop came from Ikea and we didn't modify the depth at all. In our next build we will definitely make the toilet easier to access and will get a composting toilet instead; totally agree with your ideas for the toilet location/access!

      Thanks Debra! 💙 It's funny that you mention that, we only had one bike when we left and intended to pick up another one on the road. In reality we spent way more time on other modes of transport like hiking, longboarding, and kayaking. The bike ended up only being used for emergency transportation when we broke down (so we were super grateful to have it) and a singular biking adventure where Becky borrowed a mountain-biking friend's bike.

    Hey guys I love your Sprinter :-) one question: you're running a 2kw inverter off 240ah of batteries. That's quite a bit. Has it not hurt your batteries at all? Thanks. Richard from South Africa

    • @Lifepothesis
      @Lifepothesis  2 роки тому +1

      Thanks so much!
      We decided on the 2kw inverter so we could run household appliances like a toaster and a microwave. Both of those are used for less than 5 minutes at a time, so they don't drain the batteries significantly. the only continuous draw we had on our inverter was the refrigerator, but it only draws 70 watts or so while it is running. We didn't notice a reduction in battery capacity over the year that we spent in the van.

If you meant the lower 48 that is called the contiguous 48 states. I do hope that you make it to Alaska. It's awesome👍. We found it very safe. We just used common sense and trusted our instincts when finding places to stay and park. Our biggest challenge was avoiding dangerous weather, which just required awareness of conditions and the willingness to change plans to avoid things like the ice storms in Texas, flooding that led to a road washout in Washington, and wildfires in the Pacific Northwest.

      The build was $8,000. You can see the cost breakdown on our website at lifepothesis.com/van-budget/

    erm.. hey there, try to put the reflectix on the window the other way around, i mean aluminium side towards the window it will probably work best like that lol

    • @Lifepothesis
      @Lifepothesis  2 роки тому +2

      Black out is great for stealth, and we would orient the reflectix based on whether we were keeping heat in or out. 😊

    I'm sure you guys have heard that Bec (from Eamon & Bec) has been battling breast cancer for the last several months. She did just recently have surgery, and now she is on radiation.

    I rarely ever get anything at a great price at Habitat for Humanity restore in Oakland California. They think you should pay a premium over retail because they are a nonprofit, even though everything they have is donated. I do most of my buying next-door at The Reuse People who are also a nonprofit but give me lots of great deals and are willing to negotiate, especially if you’re a repeat buyer.

    All that work and no bathroom? Could have made slight modifications to fit in a bathroom in the layout.

    • @Lifepothesis
      @Lifepothesis  2 роки тому +4

      Not having a bathroom was a conscious decision to maximize the amount of liveable space we had in the van. We do have a toilet and shower, and we are very happy with our decision to exclude a full bathroom from our build 😊

    That’s a pain to have to drag out that microwave from the bottom of a cabinet every time you want to use it

    • @tinymission7821
      @tinymission7821 2 роки тому +1

      They didn’t say whether they take it out or just use it in place. I’m sure if they wanted to give up the counter space they could just leave it up there. And although it is in an awkward place, everything in these small spaces is a give and take. They could move it to their pantry storage area to make it more convenient, but that’s just not their priority of how they want to use the space.

    Great van but you are definitely not complying with Leave No Trace since your urine drains directly to the ground under the van.

    • @Lifepothesis
      @Lifepothesis  2 роки тому +1

      Urinating outdoors can comply with leave no trace principles, and we always diluted the urine with water afterwards. More often than not we were using restrooms and not our bathroom setup.

    Oh it was going so good until we got to the "pee funnel" Aint no way that little cup can stop my flow without splashing around on the floor. You'd need like a salad bowl or something around that size not no little kitchen funnel.

    Build around a proper bathroom. It is disgusting to have your toilet under your bed and by the kitchen. why do so many people discount the importance of having a private toilet? I don't get it

      To each their own. We prioritized living space over rarely used bathroom space and often used public restrooms.

      In all things, be kind. I'm sure there was a way to convey your point without being rude. Especially since they've built it for them and not you. Their priorities are different.
