The voice that was created for this was so beautiful, and the actor did a fine job performing it.

No, it's a computer combination of a countertenor and a mezzo soprano to produce a facsimile of this angelic voice that no longer exists. :-)

"Although Dionisi provided the speaking voice, Farinelli's singing voice was provided by the Polish soprano, Ewa Malas-Godlewska and a countertenor, Derek Lee Ragin, who were recorded separately then digitally merged to recreate the sound of a castrato."

Da quello che si legge, Farinelli aveva la voce più bella, delicata, dolce di tutti! CANTAVA e INCANTAVA con la sua voce! UNICO! Ma a quale prezzo!?

It is true, the voice is digital not "human": Farinelli's voice was provided by a soprano, Ewa Małas-Godlewska and a countertenor, Derek Lee Ragin, who were recorded separately then digitally merged to recreate the sound of a castrato.

@Arsamenes1 unhistorical link between Händels stroke and Farinellis beautifull singing which, earlier in the film, made the ladies allready cry and faint.. By the way, after 1737 Händel wrote another five operas (until 1741) before breaking with this form of music forever and focusing on oratorio.

@HerrWarja I don't care for him much either.. but I think he was only popular because he was the last one, you know? I bet the real Farinelli was incredible, though =D Something just tells me..

I watched it and it made me cry, it's a beautiful movie and it shows a taugh reality: art needs sacrifice. Yes, Farinelli was an opera superstar at his time, but deep down in his soul it was a great suffering, being mutilated by castration. It's beautiful and sad, but it's worth watching it !

@kkwilson27 Actually THE major problem with the soundtrack is that it DID sound like a female soprano NOT a male or castrato voice. They concentrated on trying to find a countertenor voice and a soprano voice that matched fairly well; however, they did not understand subtleties and nuances of the required sound. Andreas Scholl + Maria Kristina Kiehr (who did sing Baroque together) would have had a far more accurate and successful sound. Listen to their Caldara recordings. Great Handel though.

Yeah, dannyboythegreat is right. It's the natural voice that is high - not falsetto. A young boy can sing high, and he's castrated to RETAIN this ability. There's no need to castrate a male so he can reach high notes in falsetto. We can do that with the...junks...attached.

I think at the end of this clip, Händel is not "freaking out" but suffers a stroke. Farinelli stayed in London from 1734 till 1737. In the clip Händel tells Farinelli to never write another opera again and indicates, that his own opera company is breaking down cause of Farinellis support to the "Opera of the nobility" the rival company to Händel. This indeed happenend in 1737 and in the same year he suffered a serious stroke. I think the movie only tries to evoke an....

"Farinelli" is the obvious name of the prize-winning movie. It is unique and exotic, although it has little to do with the real Carlo Broschi. Check something like Amazon, then click on "new and used from $..." You can get a new, widescreen version for very little.

This is one of my favourite films ever! I think despite the historical inaccuracies the film largely stays true to the general facts of Farinelli's career. What I love about it is the whole film is just sheer magic from beginning to end, I now live in Turkey overlooking the Aegean. There is nothing quite so cool as playing Alto Giove from the soundtrack as the sun sets over the Greek Islands. Bring back the sun Farinelli!

Dies anybody know if a there is a complete version of this song by this amazing voice. I know this is not an actuall person but the voice f a soprano and a counter tenor digitally pit together but did they do a complete version of the song? I would love to listen to it, this is magnificant. I havent foud a performance of such lhigh level by any acual singer. Some of them are even painfull, its a hard song and no one can sin it like this

"Lascia chi'o pianga" is the only Air sung entirely by soprano Ewa Malas-Godlewska. the others are computer work with voice of countertenor Derek Lee Ragin. It is beautiful. For my taste Jaroussky's version is better, but this one is also great.

Incidentally "kullavan," one does not have to be gay to appreciate beauty, although that too often is the mindset in America. Everything I know about Farinelli himself is that he was straight, although he either was chaste or very discrete; for I have found no evidence of any sexual liasons by him.

Not in this piece. This voice is only Ewa's. From her official site: "The voice in this aria is exclusively that of Ewa Malas-Godlewska.
The soundtrack from the Oscar nominated movie reached

  • @JacobKCarpenter

Carlo Broschi would have possessed little difficulty singing the various arias used in this film as the female soprano employed for the top part of this artificial voice. His range extended to D6, albeit I have seen some say even higher when younger. It is not inaccurate to categorize the man as a soprano when most of his contemporaries labeled as such were mezzo-sopranos by our modern standards. The attempt to recreate the castrato voice here is admirable, but boys' voices would not convincingly suit because castrati did not sound like altos, mezzo-sopranos, and sopranos that were female or males spared prepubescent genital mutilation. Singers like Javier Medina, Jorge Cano, Michael Maniaci, and Radu Marian offer the closest comparisons, but today's technology and newest talents could, perhaps, make a more convincing take using a countertenor and soprano. The owner of the UA-cam channel that exposed me to this music suggested combinations such as Andreas Scholl/Maria Kiehr or Paul Esswood/Gudula Janowitz.

Not quite the castrato voice...but a good attempt. Mix a young boy's vocal chords, a fully formed man's vocal tract and a woman's range, then you'll have it! But I'll be DAMNED if this isn't the closest thing to a castrato I've ever heard!

@daisyvision Haha, how scary that you say that! I listened too him yesterday here on youtube. I didn't like it that much. It wasn't that overwhelm about his voice, but maybe that had to do, atleast some part of the old recording, so I would prefer a countertenor voice. Philippe Jaroussky is great for example! I look up his range on wikipedia. It said that he could hit B5 but I don't know if thats true. His voice is still good.

  • @HerrWarja
    @HerrWarja 14 років тому

@jsmd32 I see what you mean. Since they have mixed the voice here with a female singer in postproduction it sounds more female. I also listened to the female voice used here in her on version of this aria. It sounds almost the same only with out all of the high notes in the end ^^ I guess the only way to know for sure is to castrate some poor young boy, and I don't think that would be very popular :P

  • @RoyalSnowbird
    @RoyalSnowbird 15 років тому

Depends... in some courts, female singers were not allowed. . . Much like in the Shakespearian times, men took on the roles of women on stage - hence, one cannot absolutely discount this as being historically inaccurate. It took a while for the court performances to evolve. Maybe later your comments would be correct - it merits investigation but quite difficult to prove to say the least. The story is nonetheless interesting and brings a window on this type of singer's life at the time. . .

everything got as strong as a male adult but with the high voice, the vocal range would grow too, so those vocies were not natural mening they were sort of manipulated, they were great and some castratos would grow to be wierd males like bad temper and wierd shaps of body because of the problems with "hormonas" the suffered a lot and so did they asistants, they got the first time the term "diva" and "grupies",

Ya. He recorded the coloratura piece Il Dolce Suono, though it wasn't a strictly classical rendition I think it shows some ability. Along with his recording of La Donna e Mobile and O Sole Mio. Also I think his rendition of the Romanian song Lie Ciocarlie shows some agility. Basically when I listen to his songs I don't hear anything weighing him down and with what he shows in those recordings leads me to my belief. Any thoughts? I'd like to know if you agree after hearing those.

It's interesting what you say, ccconni, about the actor not mouthing the vowel sounds properly and I'm not sure. Check out Caccini's Ave Maria by Sumi Jo. She hardly opens her mouth at all until the end section.Compare this with say, Nina Stemme singing Wagner (Mild Und Liese) and it might just have something to do with the requirements of the music, style and era etc, and interpretative choices. But I keep coming back to this. It's glorious, especially that top note. What is it by the way? B?

  • @skitzo429

I dont think this was early enough for that, Handel called for castrati and female singers in his score for this opera. Singing drag roles was also only something that poorly known castrati sang, at the beginning of their careers, Farinelli wouldnt have been doing that. In any case, in the scene hes dressed as a male character haha which means the screenwriter didnt make any attempt toplace this is an historically accurate context.

Moreschi's voice isn't so much the problem as it is the recording. If they did a spectral analysis, they might be able to reproduce a copy very close to the original. But I agree about the apparent quality of his voice. Not all castratos were successful. Check out the Korean singer Celestial Yoo on UA-cam. He's a "genetic" castrato with a hormonal condition that prevents him from going thru puberty & so his voice never broke. I think it proves my point & is a better example.

  • @djonma

For a very good idea of what a castrato should sound like, watch any vids of Radu Marian. In particular, there's one on here of him doing Lascia Ch'io Pangia. He has Kallman's Syndrome, which means he is a natural (endocrinological) castrato. He didn't go through puberty, his voice didn't change. His voice is totally different to most sopranists, and has a haunting quality of its own, which brings to mind the original castrato voices, since that's what it really is.

  • @hco517584

The castration had to be done before testosterone would begin to expand the larynx. If the larynx does not grow, the voice cannot deepen, and therefore stays much like a boy soprano. Also, castration was an illegal operation so an excuse had to be found in order to have the operation. In Farinelli's case, his brother claimed that he had an accident involving a horse, and therefore had to be operated on.

I also find it intriguing that you think that race dictates your ability to display emotions, this is something I have not heard of until I read your argument, interesting, bar that, I hope you enjoy your day my good man, and I hope in the near future to discard your groundless prejudices.

I hate to interrupt this fragmented argument, but, did you just say "then again, you're anglo" incorrectly spelled for the context no less. I personally am "anglo" and I hardly see how the race of someone affects their opinion, I am English, does that make my opinion ignorant, or irrelevant?
On a more positive note, this is one of the most remarkable pieces of music ever recorded, and I am presently attempting to learn it, I do however find the chordal fluctuations frighteningly difficult.

Lascia Ch'io Pianga is beautiful, isn't it. To me, it evokes great sadness. The lyrics translate to "let me weep my cruel fate and sigh for my liberty." There's more but I forgot the rest. There's a vid of a boy soprano from Lithuania singing it on youtube and it pulls your heart out to hear a child singing of such pain. Radu Marian's version is also uot there. He's an adult male soprano (about 30 when he recorded it, I think) and it was a live performance..

  • @Xochiyolotl

Wish youtube let us put links here. There's a site with a list of all the castrati with short biographies in Italian. Among them are the Mezzo Sopranistas. Venanzio Rauzzini and Caffarelli were two well-known ones. Reason I know is because I'm a big Mozart fan and the Exsultate Jubilate was written for a mezzo man. Check out the vids of Michael Maniaci singing it on youtube. He's a full-voiced male soprano with a beautiful voice and technique.

  • @Xochiyolotl
    @Xochiyolotl 16 років тому

Forgive me but this isn't the case. Most were soprani as most boys are soprani with an alto being a rare and soughtafter exception. The last castrati in the sistine chapel only had 1 alto among their number with the other 3 being soprani. Today, of the male opera singers who kept unbroken voices into adulthood, only one was alto with the other six or so being full-voiced soprani. Alto was Paolo Abel Do Nascimento, soprani are Radu Marian Javier medina Jorge Cano Randall Wong and Michael Maniaci.

you are right, but everyone also knows that education contributes a lot to you intelligence.
Bush is one very exceptional case, which is rare.
I mean, if genetic inheritance is seed, then education is water; Bush was a bad "seed" to begin with. (Btw, I am not just referring to school education; individuals can also research and investigate knowledge on their own, just that in most part these academic investigations are done in universities.)

Well, only Classical music (in lesser degree Jazz and other traditional, for example Indian music) is throughly studied in higher education (university). Of course, I've seen Universities teaching rap music too, but this is uncommon. Anyway
Classical Music = mostly educated people
education = broaden your mind (hopefully intelligent)
    broaden mind = more aware
u get the idea what i meant

Radu Marian's doesn't appear to use the same kind of "reinforced falsetto" technique that most countertenros use, his voice just seems to have stayed naturally high (having said that I would be interested to hear his speaking voice - the "natural castrato" theory should mean he would have an unusually high speaking voice as well.

It's a digitally-enhanced voice, but there are recordings here on UA-cam of modern soprano countertenors who sound pretty much as good. == try Aris Christofellis or Randall Wong among others. There is also a recording of Radu Marian singing Lascia ch'io Pianga (the second song farinelli sings here) - he is said to be a natural castrato (ie his voice just never broke)

They used two vocalists throughout the whole of Farinelli soundtrack; a countertenor (Derek Lee Ragin) and A Soprano, to create a sound which the markers decided they'd claim it'd sound like that of a castrato; which is utter rubbish, so I wouldn't take this as anything close to worthwile documentation either.

Dude, you don't need to be rude to newcomers of Classical Music like that. I mean, I bet even a seasoned professional Classical music singer knew that fact at 5 yrs. old at earliest. We, the Classical music listeners are, or at least I thought we were, more aware, understanding, tolerant, and hopefully more intelligent.

The voice of Farinelli in this film was a merge of two voices, that of Ewa Mallas-Godlewska and Derek Lee Ragin. The end product was beautiful in terms of movie production but it is probably still a far cry from that of a true castrato. A castrato's voice is neither that of a woman nor a falsettist.

The voice in this movie is a mix of a countertenor and a soprano. So you can't really compare the voice of Farinelli with Vitas.
And supposedly, no one can actually sing phrases as precisely or control their breath as well as Farinelli could back when he was alive.

What? Castratti existed because women could not sing in public. Besides, men's torax is wider than women, so the voice was more potent and richer. Some people say that the voice of the mezzo-soprano Magdalena Kozena is similar , in range, to the castratti voice, though that's hard to confirm.

No, but I have read it several times now. If you listen to him, he has a kind of tone that is unlike any other countertenor I've heard. He is described as being an "endochrinological castrato" (ie for hormonal reasons at puberty his voice just didn't change in the way most men's do)
