Not everybody loves a true driving machine. Many love the security of the understeer king (Audi). They want to know, wayyyyy before they reach their own driving limit, that the car tells them it has reached it's own limits. Hence why most family men buy an RS6 :)
I love Car Magazine and I've been buying it for decades but I've long taken their doe-eyed love of BMW with a large pinch of salt. Because put simply, on our UK roads, I've never driven a BMW where I wasn't aware I would be far happier in the equivalent Audi (for the grip) or Mercedes (for the comfort). I understand CAR has always had one foot firmly in the outright pdrformance camp, but now more than ever (due to risible road surfaces, average speed cameras, wall-to-wall speed humps in the cities) a vehicle absolutely needs to be a successful 'compromise'. That's why out of these two I'm 100% certain the RS6 would be my pick.
I was given the new M5 for an afternoon last week as there was a slight delay on collecting my M2, I was very very worried that driving a 150k M5 for the afternoon would utterly ruin the experience of getting the much cheaper M2. But I wasn't even remotely sad to be handing them the M5 back. It's absolutely beautfiul but it's too intense, too much, too crazy, you cannot use that car to anywhere near it's potential whilst staying safe and legal. Dip the throttle and you're breaking the law within 1-2 seconds regardless of where you are. The people who can afford something like this will actually have something to lose and a conscience preventing them from enjoying what this offers. As a cruiser it's lush, but I'm pretty sure the regular 5 series is just as nice inside.
It's not easy to be the king on the hill. BMW, being the ultimate driving machine, is simply often flawless. Auto journalists fight to find anything negative to say about these M-cars but end up saying "this knob is not turning in a satisfactory way", just so they don't sound biased. That is the curse of being the king :)
One additional variable that should be considered in the M5 is its all electric mode which allows you short commutes with great efficiency. At the expense of weight, that is something you don’t get in the RS6.
Whenever Audi installed variable steering, the reviewers hated it, but when BMW finally installed it, it was great... It almost looks like the reviewers are simply paid by BMW.

The Avant wins in my book, hands down. If you’ve driven one you know what I mean. Exceptional interior, thin alcantara steering rim, comfortable ride, fast as anything else on the road, sounds fantastic… need I go on
Get the RS6 Performance before it is too late, as the next one will be going the same way as this M5. The drivetrain on the C9 RS7 Avant will be a later iteration of that used in the Panamera Turbo S E-hybrid, so hardly a secret as to what it will weigh and what it will "do". Probably just as heavy, just as large, and just as fast as this M5. All seems a bit pointless. Should have been the M5 Touring for this comparison test. An RS7 Performance is the right line-up against an M5 sedan, can't imagine many actual buyers would flick between body types when considering a purchase. If Ben had had an M5 Touring for a week performing the same duties in the same varied conditions through which the RS6 Performance was apparently flawless would he have felt the same? The M5 hybrid seems a little manic, too large and way overweight to pretend being a track car for quick and seemingly uncomfortable squirts along a B-road. It would be illuminating to see this team do the same test between the M3 Touring and the M5 Touring. Looks are completely subjective. But for me, the F90 were quite good looking re. exterior design; this looks like a cheap kit car in comparison. I can understand why they have replaced their design team.
@@PEACEOUTXX1 because it's not always about performance metric, like you are driving always on the limit especialy in the western countries where nowdays you are fined and taxed basically for breathing. No comments on the design? The RS6 especially in that shade of red just blows the M5 out of the water. I could not care less if the M5 managed to hide its weight or not when it looks like a cheap chinese car next to the menacing looking RS6.
@@AgnosticThinker Guess what? I still hate it and always will. And I'm not alone. I also hate the Bangle BMWs from the 2000's that some people think aren't so bad now.
Amen! Corvette engine. Manual shifter. Not so flash interior. And surprisingly decent quality for a Yank car. If it was German, the reviewers would be fawning over it.
I don't know why people are hating on the new M5. I think it's a good looking car. And the weight of the car is only a factor if you're tracking the car every day. Which 99.9999999999999% of people won't be doing. Most people will be gunning it down the highway, showing it off on a boulevard or will be stuck in a traffic jam for most of the time. So stop whining about the weight.
Here we go again with this track bs arguments 🤦🏾♂️. Have you ever drive an SuV like an Escalade or a Truck? The weight is something to really consider and be careful about when you take a corner. Also you didn’t think about the thing people do the most : braking . So an heavier car is more difficult to stop from 60 to 0 , and difficult to manage in corner on daily basis. You don’t need to track it to have to deal with the common physics the weight brings. It’s a sport car , it shouldn’t have this kind of issue. Now add 3 more adults in the car and you are closing the gap to 3 tonnes. And all the issues listed above become more pronounced.
@@DKhalil Are you actually comparing an Escalade with a sedan? Do you understand what center of gravity is? Do you understand that the center of gravity has more baring on taking a corner and how the car handles? So, you're taking corners with 100 mph on a daily basis, do you? It's not a sportscar. It's a family sedan. First you compare it to an SUV and now you think an M5 is a sportscar. Ffs. A BMW X5M is probably also a sportscar to you. Did you even watch the video? Did you hear them complain about the handling in the corners? Of course there's physics involved but in the real world 9 times out of 10 you won't even notice it, because you won't be pushing the car to it's limit to notice it.
Bullshit... Weight affects EVERYTHING. Speed, ride, driving feeling and consumables. You drive it on the street, you're using more tires, more brakes, bushings will wear out quicker, joints will wear out quicker, everything wears your quicker even the roads. Yes you might save a bit of fuel, but everything else will consume more, but because tires, brakes, etc aren't regulated and accounted in emissions, they get away with it. If this new M5 is very good to drive, then imagine how good it would have been with all that tech and suspension tuning, but with 500kg less.
My personal hate is based on the fact that manufacturers just take away the choice of pure gas-driven sports cars from consumers and force consumers to buy what they want consumers to buy or simply force consumers to walk away. BTW, I have always been a BMW fan, currently driving a 2024 M8 gran coupe and previous car was an M550i.
RS6 all day long. Better looking by a mile, far less weight, more nimble. You guys disappoint. For so long you bashed cars with weight issues, the M5 has gotten out of control in that respect. You can't defy physics
That’s because Audi has never changed the inherent design flaw in their cars. The Quattro system means the engine has to be pushed forward past the front axle. This leads to numb steering and front heavy car. Which means poor turn in and understeer on the exit under power. Some people like it because it feels very stable and safe but if you want to really push on it is quite limited. Yes I have driven the last 3 RS6.
The ending with just the M5 on a curvy road reminded me of that banned Reebok commercial... you know... bungee jumping... and only one guy left hanging off that bridge...
Actually really like the new M5 muscular looks and fact that they keep V8😊, but they should just use V8 without hybrid system for just adding complications and weight 😢. Great video keep it up with great work ❤❤
Love how RS6 looks but i would takie it with M5 powertrain. Yes yes i know additional weight but day to day use it simply makes sense and defend itself.
I'm not fun of new Bmw, they looks like Mondeo. No style, heavy as hell and huge tablet, plastic everywhere ... Mercedes is not better, with tablet everywhere and pink colour looks like room for teenager.
What I don’t understand is why they’re comparing the current gen M5 to the F90 M5 CS. They should be comparing to the F90 Competition as that was the car most people got and the only M5 available in North America. And that car should blow the G90 out of the water for engagement and driving feel. Throttle House compared the G90 to a regular M5 and they felt the G90 is just less engaging, less fun and less agile. It’s a miss.
@ right but you’re saying it’s not as good dynamically as the M5 CS, BUT it’s also not a fair comparison. But then you don’t compare it to the regular F90 or F90 Competition. So in fact you DID compare it to the CS, while just acknowledging they’re in different classes a generation part. Surely you can see how that’s a bit of a cop out. You couldn’t find an F90 M5/M5 Comp and compare the handling/engagement of the two generations? Everyone reviewing this car has avoided doing that with the exception of Throttle House. I really don’t understand why.
For me a performance car does need to look the part and this new M5 looks awful to me. The old one was a bit plain but it had some athleticism in the design and I liked it (and I owned one). The RS6 on the other hand looks gorgeous and gets the balance of performance and family practicality just right. Hope Audi don’t screw that up with the new one 🙄
Just changed the front Michelin Pilot Sport 4's on my F90 Competition at 30,000 miles. The old tires were still comfortably above legal limits. I wonder how long they would last on this new M5. But I will never find out first hand, as the design does nothing for me.
Interesting that it was the saloon variant of the M5 against the RS6. Right result despite that though plus the touring would add even better practicality over the saloon. The next gen RS6 is likely to be as heavy if additional hybridisation capability and electric range is added. Having the best of what they can is the right call by bmw rather than sell out early and regret it and see issues like Porsche selling electric only..
So to some in a perfect world, if the looks couldn't be change but the weight could be reduced, what would be the ideal realistic weight to this M5? Or what would be your perfect M5?

However after seeing these two in person at my local BMW dealership, i must say pics dont do them justice. In Msport and pure M spec, the new X3 and M5 look 👌
Car Specification without reliability lost sense in this cars today. This is a constant headache even during the warranty period and when it ends it’s cheaper to buy a new one than to try to fix them.
If you own either of these two fine cars, you are laughing and have made it in life. And every single drive in them has the potential to be exciting. Both have commanding presence on the road also.
Joe Achilles is the only UA-camr that actually did a 0-60 and 0-140mph tests, and what was the result? In the new G90 M5, 0-60 was 3.1 seconds, and how fast was it from 0-140mph compared to the F90 M5? The G90 M5 was .7 faster to 140mph than the previous generation.

How can you conscionably recommend this new M5 over what is probably one of the last ICE Halo cars of our time. Having owned an F90 Competition and a 2024 RS6 Perf - And having recently driven the new G90, I cannot fathom, how a supposedly sophisticated car magazine, can come to the conclusion the G90 is the better choice. Objectively, having an ICE plugin Hybrid, will have inferior resale, due to the inherent rate of change of improvement of technology of the EV secondary motors. The G90s looks are pretty questionable, the car feels huge and cumbersome, the build quality ,desirability, fit and finish is not in the same league as the RS6, its got augmented sound (and the core sound is pretty quiet), the G90 is not as good a grand tourer as the RS6 - it doesnt feel as compliant, particularly on air suspension like for like- whereas The RS6 doubles as a super wagon and a limousine. its literally objectively not close, but most importantly, any real car enthusiast, is buying the last of the straight ICE variants over the Hybrids - no doubt the forthcoming RS7 will share the same setup as the Panamera Turbo with circa 780bhp, and be absurdly fast - however, it will not go down as a classic, where as the current performance variant undoubtedly will.
They should have commented on price comparison too. BMW is well priced vs an outgoing RS6. If only the boot of the M5 touring had 50-100L more then it would be the near perfect car.

That M5 Weighs more than my VW California!😢
But still beats all its rivals that are ligher
What does that even mean….”beats”. What a stupid statement, who are u racing? Lol. And if that’s all u care about, buy an electric car.
It weighs more than a ford F150
Audi RS6 everyday for me
BMW ❤️
@@mrr3808 Getting a bit emotional?
One additional variable that should be considered in the M5 is its all electric mode which allows you short commutes with great efficiency. At the expense of weight, that is something you don’t get in the RS6.
RS6 all day ! Got mine on stage 2 , valvetronic exhaust … couldn’t be more happy with it 💥💥💥
Whenever Audi installed variable steering, the reviewers hated it, but when BMW finally installed it, it was great... It almost looks like the reviewers are simply paid by BMW.
The look of the new M5 alone is enough to make me look elsewhere.
Always had RS6s love them. Hate this M5 id have an e39 one though. Best looking BMW ever made.
If you still think E39 looks the best, It says it all..
@D-nort2 says what? That i could afford a new RS6 and an E39 M5 for a summer only motor. Plus all the other motors iv got.
@@chethemerc7841 I just say if you still think design from the 90s looks the best. You are not open for new design. I dont say the new M5 is the best looking, but absolutly not the e39.

@ UK, did 22,000 miles and it rinsed me, drive it slow or ring its neck out and it made no odds, the only plus was I used to get lots of Shell points from the station 😂

I want last RS6❤
The Avant wins in my book, hands down. If you’ve driven one you know what I mean. Exceptional interior, thin alcantara steering rim, comfortable ride, fast as anything else on the road, sounds fantastic… need I go on
Could have just given the RS6 the win since it'll be the last of it and actual it is better
RS6, please. It looks better, sounds better, and if I'm going to have a wagon, I may as well be cosseted and pampered a bit more.
Rather get a m5 cs or m3 touring. Why would u get the worse car in every performance metric compared too those 2 animals

No comments on the design? The RS6 especially in that shade of red just blows the M5 out of the water. I could not care less if the M5 managed to hide its weight or not when it looks like a cheap chinese car next to the menacing looking RS6.

As a serial BMW owner, I think this isn't as ugly as it could have been.
That's about as much of a compliment as I could give.
Not for me.
For the past 30 years most new BMWs have received negative response on their design in their first year, before becoming the most popular.
@richardlabeja remember when everyone hated the new m3/4 front grill. It's defo gonna grow on people
@@AgnosticThinker Guess what? I still hate it and always will. And I'm not alone. I also hate the Bangle BMWs from the 2000's that some people think aren't so bad now.
Rs6 is so beautiful compare to new m5.
RS6 with an APR Stage 2 tune with a proper full exhaust would be heavily😏
I cant believe I'm saying this but I think the CT5-V Blackwing is the car to have in this segment now.
or the cousin of the M5 thats not coming back M8 Gran Coupe
I agree with you. It's a pity that we don't have it here in South Africa
They hate on every BMW. The M3/4 was trashed. The M2 was trashed.
Absolutely epic review … one of the best of the year. Location, scenery, and two cars in “to die for” colours. Oh, decisions !
RS6 all day long. Better looking by a mile, far less weight, more nimble. You guys disappoint. For so long you bashed cars with weight issues, the M5 has gotten out of control in that respect. You can't defy physics
You guys never pick the RS6 as winner, absolutely no sense to pick this M5 over the RS6
Audi has never been a winner. Everyone just likes the faster car and a ton of BMW bias.
No true car guy loves the understeering of an Audi@@jonlikesplanes
That’s because Audi has never changed the inherent design flaw in their cars. The Quattro system means the engine has to be pushed forward past the front axle. This leads to numb steering and front heavy car. Which means poor turn in and understeer on the exit under power. Some people like it because it feels very stable and safe but if you want to really push on it is quite limited. Yes I have driven the last 3 RS6.
Keep in mind that 738lbs of torque is impressive considering back in early 2000s that came a v12 turbo that torque figured
The ending with just the M5 on a curvy road reminded me of that banned Reebok commercial... you know... bungee jumping... and only one guy left hanging off that bridge...
Im going to need a tracklist for this video. The music was great
Have you tried a 550e? Does it feel sweeter or just as lardy with a bit less oomph?
Actually really like the new M5 muscular looks and fact that they keep V8😊, but they should just use V8 without hybrid system for just adding complications and weight 😢.
Great video keep it up with great work ❤❤
Looks to me that they've softened the styling on the front a bit too... more than welcome!
Love how RS6 looks but i would takie it with M5 powertrain. Yes yes i know additional weight but day to day use it simply makes sense and defend itself.
"It doesn't matter if it's better or worse" - it's a masterpiece :) The whole "test" in a nutshell.
The M5 touring is quite different in driving dynamics so that should have been the comparison. Still entertaining and informative though!
You guys across the water has the best reviews. Probably it's the accent
Thanks 😂
Great review!
As we stated in the video, we’re specifically not comparing it to the M5 CS as that’s an unfair comparison.
@@CARmagazineTVCan I get a tracklist for this video (the song that starts near minute 14?)

@kenanrodriguez8743 🤮🤮🤮
What do you think about the new Panamera compared to those two?
Great review , better if you had the M5 estate . Let's be honest both of these cars are too wide to be B road weapons (never mind the weight !)
Audi all day every day, one love!🥰🥰🥰🥰🔥🔥🔥🔥👍👍👍🔝🚀
RS 6 has round dials so much better in my opinion, V shape on back of M5 rear lower panel looks odd.
If anyone buys this car on looks, and says they love the look. They are wrong 😂
Me, for example hahaha
Just changed the front Michelin Pilot Sport 4's on my F90 Competition at 30,000 miles. The old tires were still comfortably above legal limits. I wonder how long they would last on this new M5. But I will never find out first hand, as the design does nothing for me.
They say the M5 is too heavy. Not too many sports cars can go 190 mph that weigh a lot less
RS6 and M5 cs can.
CT5 blackwing is the one to get. Beast car that looks the part with a 6 speed. LFG. 👌👌👌
Α Giulia QV/GTA for me is up to the task, all you need. The new M5 is too heavy.....maybe pointless....maybe....
This was a BMW sponsored review right? At least that’s what showed up on my screen before the video started. Might explain the result!
Fake exhaust sound or sound coming through speakers are just unacceptable at this price point.
No way around it in 2024 unfortunately.
People talking about the m5s weight and pick the rs6 why not the m3 touring then its more nimble then the rs6 and quicker
19:36 They totally should have done that w/the S58 and a smaller/lighter battery package
Both very very nice, and in real life love having them in front puttering at 155. Only problem in 2 hours they need juice😢
So to some in a perfect world, if the looks couldn't be change but the weight could be reduced, what would be the ideal realistic weight to this M5?
Or what would be your perfect M5?
I’d get the G99 M5 Estate!
Am i the only one noticing that there are a lot of similarities (in the front especially) with the E60 BMW?
There definitely are subtle similarities
The irony is that with all the extra weight, the G90 is probably no more efficient than the F90.
where was this filmed? stunning place
Everyone (including me) makes the same mistake of hating new BMWs. I did the same with the g80 ms …. I now own one.
Man I loved the G80 from the beginning, sold it now to get the new M5, which in my opinion is looking awesome

Sorry but not the BMW. Awful car.
If that car sounds good to you mate then I am afraid you have never heard a good-sounding car, and not to mention that fake noise in the cabin, man its horrendous
Okay, this car has 577 bhp for the combustion engine, so imagine the huge numbers this engine could achieve when it gets modified
As soon as I saw the new cars stats I went straight to my closest dealer and bought one of their last previous gen M5’s
They should have commented on price comparison too. BMW is well priced vs an outgoing RS6. If only the boot of the M5 touring had 50-100L more then it would be the near perfect car.
you had me at sound augmentation

I wish Audi could update RS6 interior only and leave it as it is. BMW looks and feels newer, better tech, but her weight is insane
