Fun fact, the westpark toll way used to be a railroad track. The rail was decommissioned and replaced with the toll. In the early 90s you can use to hear the train horn from all over Alief at night.
40 years ago Alief wasn’t empty, it was a nice, clean and safe place to live. I lived there 45 years ago. Now I wouldn’t want to be anywhere close to it.
Most of the neighborhood and high school spawned in the 1980s. Shortly within the next 10 years, the high schools had metal detectors. That is how fast it deteriorated. Class of 89 here right around when the metal detectors were getting installed due to many students bringing weapons.
Alief was once the nicest and safest place you could ever imagine in the 70's, that is until Metro bus service from Houston started in 1977-78. It quickly went downhill after that. The Asian presence really helped once their population finally gained momentum; they saved it from becoming an outright ghetto. Regardless, still no way in hades could you get me to live in that hood.
Grew up there from about 1970. First wave of young suburban families. It was half farm land back then. Everything was being built new. It was Leave it to Beaver until about 1985 when we left.

Yep. Us kids used to go pick dewberries that grew like crazy either side of tracks (72-80ish). Mom made cobblers.
I remember that railroad on Gessner & Westpark in the early 2000s 😢
