One use of magnesium is to create plutonium metal. It's mixed with plutonium fluoride and a crystal of iodine and heated in a MgO thimble in a platinum crucible. The reaction is similar to the termite reaction but it generates MgF2 and Pu metal that forms a button at the bottom of the crucible 😮
Prior to this video I thought that I had an understanding of magnesium, my wife actually had to have magnesium given to her in the hospital one time so at least biologically I understood the necessity, however I had no idea that we used it so much in so many different things. Totally fire video, get the pun there haha, okay I'll see myself out...
Elements are fun. Really enjoyed this. One more car part is mag wheels. In the old days, they used to burn up occasionally. Early photographic flash powder was magnesium and an oxygen source like perchlorate. You tried to avoid having it go off in your pocket.
What is the smoke from burning magnesium? Is it also magnesium oxide that gets pushed by air circulation stronger than the effects of gravity or something else?
I work at a steering wheel manufacturing company, the first(skeleton type) part is magnesium. Basically i check them if they are okay, what should i look out for?
More fire science! What other experiments would you like to see?
Fascinating!!! Omg spontaneous combustion??
Hydrogen is a fuel now!
Magnesium you need it for ya heart rhythm
Ok if a person has high levels of magnesium, is dehydrated and has a seizure? Spontaneous combustion?

Maybe next time :)
Nice work man
