What people need to realise when it comes to censorship or what is politically incorrect is that the words are inherently meaningless, it's the intent. We should only be concerned when someone uses a word against someone else, and the intent is malice.
+Giovanni Magnus Completely agree. A joke and satire is used for comedy - not because the person telling the joke ACTUALLY BELIEVES what they are saying. The intent is important!
Intent warrants censorship? I hope not. If someone has malicious intent and we censor them, it will snowball and the line for “malice” and inherently subjective “intent” will creep further and further. Because some flawed and biased human must decide what constitutes malice. No bueno. Bad ideas are better off being aired out (and knocked down) in the marketplace of ideas.

Pretty much what you said. For example, Holocaust and 9/11 jokes would have been very offensive if made merely months after WWII ended/the Twin Towers collpased (for some people, they still are). They would have said it was "too soon". But now, almost every comedian has already made at least one or two jokes about these topics with no major repercussions.
What every college student should be told on his first day on campus....."Nobody gives a shit what you think, get used to it, that follows you through life". +Giovanni Magnus Completely agree. A joke and satire is used for comedy - not because the person telling the joke ACTUALLY BELIEVES what they are saying. The intent is important!
+Luke Macris There are examples of comedy being used maliciously, the old black face for example. But yeah, 95% of the time it's just a fucking joke.
Even still, it's just a word. It doesn't physically harm you.
Intent warrants censorship? I hope not.
If someone has malicious intent and we censor them, it will snowball and the line for “malice” and inherently subjective “intent” will creep further and further. Because some flawed and biased human must decide what constitutes malice. No bueno.
Bad ideas are better off being aired out (and knocked down) in the marketplace of ideas.
political correctness needs to go into the trash where it belongs.
I agree, with that censorship emotional bs is gone, the western world can handle problems maturely and not like a bunch of babies
Only if "conservatism" goes in with it.
Conservatism is nothing but Fascism in disguise.
I think some one needs to look up Fascism in a book. Not from cnn
@@jeffedmonds6673 Fascism is a right wing ideology.
The best of all hundreds of New Rule segments I've seen with him!
Seinfeld, Chris Rock, Larry the Cableguy .. and a whole season of Southpark...
Every season of South Park
I am r4eally worried that South Park will go off the air because their network wants Chinese money
3:39 - I wonder what this same student thought a few years later when Amy Schumer’s “I Feel Pretty” was roundly condemned by the p.c. brain police. The dog is eating its own tail.
Now I note the "her Adam's apple" joke on a night you had Ann Coulter on the panel. Pretty bold, Brother Bill...
Something I love about this segment is you have Republicans and Democrats all together laughing .
Totally.
If I was the academy, I would file a police report to get W. Smith arrested, give Oscar to second nominee, and sue Will Smith on behalf of the academy and Chris Rock.
I am severely offended by this section. How can he _generalize_ about the US military "blowing shit up"?! That is only done by radical US militaries, it doesn't represent the US military philosophy as a whole. Bill Maher needs to check his privilege, because unlike the US military, his incursions of other countries isn't scrutinized so heavily by the media.
#NotAllUSMilitaries
+Schrodinger I see what you did there. Or do I?
+Schrodinger
too vague, people won't get it.
+Schrodinger Are you suggesting that Ann Coulter should be embedded with Bill on his next incursion?
+Schrodinger There should really be a sarcasm sign.
LOL that's a good one!
Bill Maher is brilliant!
“Dear you little shit” Fucking awesome 👏 😂
"The student cited Amy schumer as a comedian ..." lmao
Amy,,,,,,yuck.
He even got a laugh out of Ann Coulter. That's something.
Coulter, Uhgh!!
2:15 Wow. Joy Ann Reid laughing
Bill Maher seems like a guy who knows he's always right no matter what
"Dear you little shit" has got to be the greatest salutation ever.
Brilliant!! Thank you
After watching Chappelle's The Closer, this bit from 2015 has aged well like fine wine.
This was what 3 years ago
And things are even worse 🤦♀️
Dude... THANK YOU
youre on point as usual 👌🏾
"with the possible exception of the US military"
Hah!
Jakob Celén That was harsh, that’s gotta hurt some right wingers feelings I’m sure!
3:47 I'm hispanic and think that Amy Schumer joke was one of the funniest things I've ever heard.
Well said!!!
Bill Maher 2020
“Make America laugh again”
"Dear you little shit" That's a great opening line if I've ever heard one.
The one time Larry The Cable Guy is the underscore to the credibility of an argument 😂
This is so damn refreshing from all the PC shit that I am exposed to on a daily basis. We college students really do suck at taking jokes.
why is that?
"dear you little shit" kills me every time I watch this
Thank fuck!ng goodness for the Bill Mahers of this world. We need more of that.
That last line was the best! Lol! “With the exception of the US military.”
I know right Karen?
Lovely little nod to George.
To think this was 7 years ago. What a prelude for the future...
Indeed. Goes to show Bill was *always* calling out BS and not just recently, as some like to say.
Even Ann Coulter knew to laugh. Bill Maher rocks
Comedy = Tragedy + Time. Take away the tragedy, and what've you got? Nothing.
no you get a great song
+Roger Puzzitiello Patton Oswalt taught me that tragedy plus comedy equals time. I think he was right and you're wrong.
I so agree, and what needs to stop happening is all these damn apologies. Stand your ground.
I miss Carlin too!
Not often that I agree with Bill Maher but I have to on this one.
You helped it along in your past. Nice to see you speaking truth.
Easily one of my favorite New Rule segments. It's sad how much worse American society has become.
What every college student should be told on his first day on campus....."Nobody gives a shit what you think, get used to it, that follows you through life". The problem is in today's 'social media' culture, everyone has a platform.....a voice. The thing that hasn't changed is nobody cares. Stop being a celebrity in your own mind.
From six years ago! Oh please God let this go viral NOW! Oh Richard, Paul, George! Where are you when we need you?
I MISS GEORGE CARLIN.
Oh, yes, George Carlin what's the real deal, holyfield! 😂 Straight up no chaser!😂💯
Lmao @ "pre-fuck you!"
I’m a man who doesn’t always agree with Bill Maher but when I do he’s 100% correct and sounding very conservative!
The moment Bill mentioned George Carlin, i found this whole segment automatically funnier.. :D
It’s unfortunate how well this aged
I've been listening to Maher since the 90s. His worldview hasn't changed, but the world has changed. In the 90s he was viewed as an almost radical liberal. Now people are accusing him of being a closet conservative. Bill is a very good yardstick or barometer by which to measure cultural shift across the last few decades. Keep on keeping it real and making me laugh Bill.
That was actually a pretty good impersonation of Clint Eastwood.
Will Smith this is meant for you. This is a great show from 6yrs ago. Even mentioned Steph Curry 3point man this year Smacking Chris for a joke at 2022 Oscars
My college student step-daughter is part of the perpetually offended crowd. I make it a point to choose jokes that will set her off because I'm sick of her feigned outrage over everything.
The irony is he’s talking to his audience
This aged well, he even mentioned Chris Rock.
