  • Extinction Rebellion’s co-founder Clare Farrell and conservation scientist Dr Charlie Gardner team up once more to discuss issues and stories they feel are not getting enough airtime. They want to make sure that the latest news in science and important reports that are relevant to the climate and ecological crisis are flagged and explained in ways that are easy to understand.
EPISODE 15: Insects, injunctions, and upgrading democracy
This time, Clare and Charlie discuss the worrying decline in insect populations and what that means, as well as the further suppression of climate activists by the use of private injunctions. Join Charlie, Clare, and the whole team at Upgrade Democracy 30th August - 1st September in Windsor.

Also in Hull the council although strapped for cash still has the money to pay for spraying our verges with glyphosate and they still pay to chop vegetation and trees down wherever they can …..

It's painful how the machinery of a city is immovably inhuman.

That is absolutely terrible. Terrible. I was stopped for poor driving in Mount Shasta California. They made me wait and wait and wait outside of the car. I sat on the nice grass on the verge. Idly picked a little grass and smelled it. That was enough to lock me in a mental institution for 3 or 4 weeks until I finally called a friend to get me out.

Here in Hull it’s the same here. Hardly any butterflies with the cold wet weather

60-year-old moved BACK To the Sacramento valley, Calif. 5 years ago. Shocking lack of insects. No frog no crickets sounds. Not a single bat in the evening sky. No bugs on the windshield in summer. BUT THIS YEAR IS EVEN WORSE, ALMOST NO BUTTERFLY ON MY GIANT LANTANA HEDGE. 5 years ago I began gardening to benefit insects. So even my insect friendly beneficials garden is almost completely devoid of butterflies!!!!!

I live in Glasgow and butterflies thrived on my wild lavender 2 years ago. Haven't seen a single butterfly except in my families gardens who live further north in Stirlingshire, quite a rural place but even there, it wasn't the usual swarm of butterflies around the buddlea and lavender just a few

The grapes in my garden are shrivelled and a weird colour and texture. All other 13 years I've lived here, they looked healthy. Obviously just a random data point. I hear generally vineyards are doing well here, but not for my garden.

So far, there is no democracy, worldwide. As the "Old Greeks" knew, democracy means to select political representatives not by elections, heritage or financial resources but by lottery. Every topic must be discussed and decided upon by an assembly. Those assemblies have to be reconfigured often and naturally, we have to include ALL citizens. Athens did not include the poor and women. We have to learn from that example.

I haven't seen a single wasp since, well, I've no idea. I must have seen one last year, surely. Certainly haven't seen any this year.

Small garden birds and hummingbirds and bees are still all right here, Sacramento valley, CA. But we don't have giant flocks of birds flying overhead anymore, and this region is called the Feather River because we used to have giant flocks of birds. Shocking lack of insects--No frog no crickets sounds--Not a single bat in the evening sky. No bugs on the windshield in summer. BUT THIS YEAR IS EVEN WORSE. almost no butterfly on my giant flowering lantana hedge.

In Australia the 'Varroa mite' has plagued our Bee's (Europeans), thankfully our Native Bee's are unaffected. But it is just coming into Spring, none to be seen, or very low numbers when spotted. No Butterflies either, quite strange indeed. Something is going on. I refuse to use any Industrial product on my garden. I grow Comfrey, and plenty of it.

The government put Fipronil through the environment to kill rogue bees for varroa. It of course would have killed off target insects. Now, they're spraying relentlessly over Queensland to kill every last fire ant. This includes spraying through nature reserves (arial spraying).

I have seen some butterflies but much fewer. I live near a country park in Surrey by waterways. The bees have been a healthy number - I had six different varieties buzzing about my lavender 🪻🐝

I am the law because I have GOD in me & I can do & say what I like as long as it does not hurt another person, another animal unless it's for food & absolutely does not bring harm to this planet or better known across the Cosmos as the Ark, because its precious cargo is Life. If anyone is interfering with this then they're in the wrong & face an awful wrath because you reap what you sow. Those allowing this damage are as bad as those committing these crimes against 🌎.

Injunctions are tosh, illegal. The basis is illegal and un named persons are impossible to because you cannot apply the civil procedure rules 😅😅😅 i cannot believe they are still doing this!!!! 😅😅

    • @earthsystem

You can CALL them illegal all you want, the law is enforcing them.

@@earthsystem no because we are on with challenging it now. Through Attorney general and judicial conduct. Its contempt. They set a new reporting service to complain.
It's just one of a number of critical things we have to resolve ..... The issue has been raised for a resolution
