In the late stages of the Cold War, Soviet tank development took a rapid turn that frightened NATO leaders. Not only were current generation main battle tanks becoming much more prevalent, but it was becoming increasingly difficult to destroy them with infantry anti-tank weapons and air deployable assets. This was largely due to their large investment in explosive reactive armor, which is great for countering chemical effect rounds such as shaped charges. In order to counter these new developments, the US military began to investigate a variety of new anti-tank technologies. These included new 105mm and 120mm tank ammunition, top attack anti-tank missiles, and kinetic energy missiles. Kinetic energy developments included the SPIKE hypervelocity rocket, Vought Hypervelocity Missile (HVM), Line of Sight Anti-Tank (LOSAT), Advanced Kinetic Energy Missile (ADKEM), and Compact Kinetic Energy Missile (CKEM). These were all powerful tools in their own right.

Not really.
Even nowadays, the army rarely uses hardkill APS systems on the Abrams purely because it would destroy any functionality it would have with troops.
Same reasy why they dont use ERA aswell I think, and instead went for composite armour.
Soviet tanks in the 80s would use APS systems purely as a cost saving measure.
In reality, ground clutter, mountains, buildings, and various other stuff would severely limit the APS radar. Basically outside of lab conditions, it was mediocre.
The radar would also have to be able to track a target for a few seconds, before being able to make an actual firing solution.
Theres a reason why the only APS the Americans were thinking of fielding, was developed in the 2000's,
and was a severely limited version that would only be able to shoot a material directly downwards onto the incoming warhead, instead of intercepting it like Trophy APS would.
Although even that was considered unreliable, even though it was modern day USA with genuinely good radar systems.
The thing is, a 20% failure rate in Russia would be a ground breaking improvement, while in litterally everywhere else, it would be infeasible and would kill a program.
TLDR: Russia puts shit into service even when its borderline unusable, while Americans would get publicly lambasted by congress for having a 10% failure rate.
The Moskvas recent service records seem to support this.
I think they're holding off on the anti-everything so that the enemy won't just copy it so that when the war comes, the american MIC just churns it out.

Speaking of high velocity missiles, I'd like to go on a short tangent about the Nike Sprint air-defense missile. It was an American Cold War-era ABM system, that involved launching a megaton-range warhead at incoming ICBM's on an extremely high-speed rocket -- accelerations exceeded 100G's during the boost phase, and speeds of Mach 10 were reached in under 5 seconds. The heat on the body was so intense a special ablative coating had to be developed. In test footage, it looks like it been sped up but no, that actually how fast it is, and you can see the missile body glowing white-hot.
Sprint is the most out there wild fucking thing ever made by man, up there with SLAM

oh my god the AGM-166 LOSAT is a beast. I hope they add this on the humvee chassis for war thunder. Finally a reason to add the humvee to the game.
While in real life this missile probably can destroy literally everything, i can bet in war thunder it will stuck in fuel tanks and tracks and make no damage to light tanks and helis, just because WT can't really simulate kinetic damage properly.

The same can be applied for any war really
Take WW2, there were tons of super-ship designs in the making in the later years, though were slightly out of reach due to resource shortages and the axis' receding power, marking the near end to the war. These ranged from Carriers to even Subs;
The Japanese' 20-inch-armed battleship A-150, their 50,000 ton carrier G14 and aviation submarines.
Germany's H-klasse, O-klasse among others and Britain's Lion-class and light cruiser projects.
France's Alsace and Italy's UP. 41 and many more.

BUT, AND HERE ME OUT.

This is because these missiles require distance to speed up and acquire penetration power. This means they have the oddity of having abysmal penetration at close range compared to other weapons. The penetration power would increase as long as the motor is still burning until it stops. Only then would penetration power once again decreases with distance.
TLDR: It would only be usable at long ranges.
I would love to see missiles bounce off in close quarters.
It would also fly hella fast meaning that it would be able to outshoot apfsds rounds

The Humvee variant also doesn't even have a turret unlike the Bradley and CCVL variants, meaning it is even more useless at anything less than 1 km (the missile goes way too fast to correct its flight path under 1 km if you aren't looking straight at the target)

In war thunder it’s an 8.0 tank, but in reality it should have fought earlier tanks that we can see at around 7.3-7.7
He did a whole video on it saying its the worst missle tank, but he never tried using the commander sight from cover which is it's greatest feature
But then Russia/Germany mains would cry about their 100% dominance being even remotely challenged.
Russia/Germany can have ultrafast ATGM vehicles with HEAT cannons at 7.3.
But God forbid America gets the Sheridan at the same BR, despite it being worse in practicaly everyway.
God forbid France even gets to stay competitive.
Playing Russian games is fun as long as you play whichever side has the most propaganda supporting them.

It's no where near as painfully misplaced as a lot of other stuff like BMP-1P 1974, 1979 Marder A1 at 7.3br, 7.3br Leopard 1 1965, 1965 Object 120 7.3br, 1965 RU251 7.0br, 1964 AMX-13-90 7.3br, 1976+ Ratel at 6.0 and 6.7br, 1965 AMX 105 gun Sherman somehow at 6.0, 1967 plus Strv-103 cancer, 70's lazy ranger IKV90 at 7.0, 1967 ammo Su-122-54 at 6.7, 7.7br 2006 PT-76E in its range.

KE missiles have a problem though, they all have a minimum range in order to get the penetrator up to speed, and that was several hundred yards. This meant that in urban and heavy forested encounters they would be worthless against armor.
Uhh no - minimum range tests were conducted - and a missile as hot as the KEM was really didn’t have a minimum range issue lethality wise.
Its purpose was not close combat. It was developed to act as a tank destroyer when nothing else would work
Basically, what if had an APFSDS shell… _but rocket powered?_

Well, looks like its being added as an event vehicle. Should be interesting.
Having explored this idea about a decade ago with a few others, we called them KAT (it should be obvious what that means). But we just for fun wanted to see if shoulder fired was viable. And depending on your definition of viable, it is. But as you can imagine weight and size is a problem along with back blast. Also range, not long range, short range. Because it can't really do shit if it hasn't built of any speed. Though would love to explore stuff like that again if I could form another independent research group (pretty much just a think tank). because I'd love to built a stealth drone, since the equations are public info and thanks to improved GPU's you can simulate a lot now. One interesting rough method is using ray tracing, which I had brought to my attention when talking about submarines. Which is super clever, since you can use to to see how waves impact an object. All be it not a perfect sim of radar.

I think one of the bigger drawbacks cited for not adopting it was its effective minimum range. Since the missile needs to accelerate it would have no to a lessened effect to armored targets within 500 meters. at 500 meters it reached its maximum velocity, If I remember correctly, though it may have been more.
Uh no - at close range the motor has not burned out so unless you want a massive KE dump AND the explosive equivalent of a 100 lb go bomb going off in your face when the unburned propellant explodes short range is not an issue - it was tested.
