The Guide elaborates on the techniques used on the show. The examples given in the ua-cam.com/users/postUgkxECnmSvBSv_NGWx4_ChD73pF3NYZwI2F3 are helpful and some of the techniques suggested very useful. One such technique/tool suggested was the lure stick to encourage a small dog to keep up with the heel command. I have a small dog who lags behind smelling any and everything and find it hard to keep bending over while walking to his level. The lure stick is great also for another dogs focus and sprinting at anything that catches her eye. The stories about different dogs, their different temperaments, have been helpful, especially Lulu's: After reading about Lulu's challenges I felt relief concerning one of my rescues that I have had for 10 years. Over many years I have checked out many training books from the library, watched different shows, DVDS, bought training books, taken lessons and this book is the best by far! Kindness, patience and perseverance works.

My previous dog did not have a strong return. She did have a good sit. Whenever she got too far away or if there was live stock etc I would just yell sit. She passed away at 15 years old years ago. My current dog was trained after I discovered Zak. Rigby is very reliable and has been since about 2 and a 1/2 years old. When one of the dogs at a large off leash dog park caught a rabbit, all the dogs went nuts and everyone was yelling for their dogs to return. My boy was the only dog who did. Thanks for all you do and keep up the good examples!

A solid recall is something that I was never been able to achieve with my first dog (got him at 3 months). I know a bit more about how to achieve it now, but because of the fact that my newly adopted dog being extremely fearful and sensitive, I can't really work on basic obedience just yet. She has managed to relax enough in certain situations, to sit when told.
I follow another trainer that says "if you don't have a solid recall, your dog should never be off leash". For their safety, and others.

Nothing makes me happier than seeing my pup bombing towards me when I call him 🥰 we’re using a long lead and if I’m confident we’re in a safe environment, the lead will occasionally drag on the ground so he has more freedom. He’s not at Inertia’s level yet, but we’re working on it. He’s also very independent so happy with his progress so far at 2yo.

I take my dog for Offleash running several times a week she’s a German Shepherd and like your dog she’s a herding dog and I play ball and frisbee with her and she loves it. I have a tiny yard. We can’t do that at home so I take her to veterans park where they have baseball fields and I let her run there. Thank you for sharing. I love you method of training. In fact, I use your method to train my German Shepherd and she’s pretty obedient. This time she don’t listen but I’m working on it. She’s very lovable, very affectionate. And super smart.

My Border Collies have 300 ft recall. I trust them to come when called. I don't like to micromanage my dogs. I teach them to do the right thing. And since they are clever dogs, they know what to do and, more importantly, what not to do. Not 100% foolproof, but since the recall is 100%, we can make do.

Every dog is different and some will be way more concerned with staying close to their owner than anything else, but inherently 'ignore everything around you and stay with me even though you can leave at any time, and also be ready to stop whatever you're doing to come immediately when I call you' is a challenging concept. Not for humans, but for dogs.
Hence why most dogs will require extensive training before they can be trusted off leash. When you have a dog that's not interested in everything out there and only interested in staying with you (I know one of those dogs too) it can be harder to see why others need to put in more effort and time, so it's important to remember not all dogs are like yours 😅

You talk about how if a dog was unable to listen in this situation they would have to be put on leash. What if you can't get them back on leash? You call your dog, they don't listen, so you go towards them to leash them. They run farther away, thinking it's a game. Or you ran away so they're inclined to follow you. Then when they get to you they're not sure why they're being leashed. How would you handle this?

The key to free leash walking is having complete vocal or hand sign control of your dog. It takes time, patient and put down your phone for 2 hours a day. Where are several must have commands and understanding that have be flawless;, recall, stop, check-ins, leave it, left, right, street crossing, sidewalk (meansing walk on the sidewalk or side of the street if no side walk), which side i want her on, left or side side, and many more. While walking with others dogs around can be a challenge, but a simple leave it or no is all it takes. While barking and reactionary dogs on walks can be a distraction the biggest challenge is having cats, squirrel and rabbit run out in front of us and not have Sophie react or chase mode, or insteadly call her off or stop engaging in a pursuit.
Sophie is a 2 year and 4 month old border collie which i have been free leash walking for the last 11 months. She was trained on a 50 foot lead for 7 months until the rains and muddy gutters would make a mess for the leash, and she earned the responsibility that came with freedom
I walk her free leash 5 to 7 miles a day, only have the leash on 1/4 miles stretch that is high traffic, kids on bikes on the sidewalk. I also take she out 2x a week on the bike, for 2 5 miles, were she trottes along side me on the road. This is were focus, and ignoring distractions are key. I dont use treats. Its 100% praise.
I run into naysayers, but they represent less than 1%, over those that brings a smile to their face, 👍, she behaves better than their kids, or students, etc.
My point is why should i take away Sophie freedom she earned through hard work and dedication, flawless direction and listening, because of leash laws that were written to safe guard dogs and the public. The leash is a way to control the dog and keep them safe. I just tell people she is on a verbal or hand sign leash, she will do what ever i tell her to do. (I only have to say it once, ok maybe twice on occasions). I have had several people tell me to put Sophie on a leash, because its making their dog react, bark and lunge, Sophie stands on the other side street just looking, like what dumbass.
Btw, i also clap or snap my fingers to get her attention.
    Sorry for rant
