- On Minecraft Live Oct 3 we announced the Caves and Cliffs update, which includes (among many other things) new cave generation. Here is the extended version of the cavegen demo we showed there.

Now over to you. What kind of caves would YOU like to see in the Caves and Cliffs update? Inspire us! Post links, pics, videos, drawings.
Some disclaimers about this demo:
- The mountains at the beginning and end are only placeholders (the actual mountains will probably look quite different).
- We use glowing ores as a placeholder for possible new yet-to-be-added light sources (no promises though!)
- Some of the caves in this demo are really huge! Those will probably be rare. When prototyping we like to push the boundaries to explore what is possible. We'll also have small claustrophobic caves, plus some of the old cave generation.

can we please have a cave music background when were in a big cave like chimes sounds or something
It might interfere with the theme of people's builds. Say I made a futuristic underground base near a cave. I wouldn't want spooky chimes and bells because it wouldn't fit with what I was making. I think it works in the Nether because it's really hard to have different themed builds there since you kind of have to make things around the idea of 'hell'.

@@misterk7_- you could argue that the overworld interferes with someone making a really spooky or evil castle in the overworld with the calm music there too, sorta
CreativelyJake maybe, but I don’t think the overworld music interferes too much. It only plays occasionally and was not designed to imply any sort of particular theme. It’s calming, sure, but it fades into the background a lot more compared to something like the Nether music. kind of like a silence breaker.
During the warden showcase you could hear new ambience and a new soundtrack

it's so atmospheric and acoustic. which fits the sense of just peacefully wandering around a dank cave mining coal. This would feel so amazing if this was put into the game!

Probably not :( They’ve said before piano was the main type of music and this incorporates none. Either way it’s a great song

Mountains are going to be one giant cake:
The cake will be mostly get some amplified touches to the mountains, since this video showed us quite the snowy mountains.
The frosting will be the Snowier Snow
With of course, the Goats to top it off as the cherry on the cake.
But the cake is a lie, since it has a giant hollow cave in it.

P_M LIFESTYLE we are probably not, the mountains were measured by people and they were well below 256y, using the fact that iron spawns below y 64 for reference.

This kind of generation is what the "hills" biomes (ex: Wooded Hills, Jungle Hills, etc.) should generate like. Currently you can barely tell the difference between them and their normal variants.

I'd just like to say large, smooth mountain generation seems great. Good space for builds while still looking grand. Steep mountains are nice too

I'm extremely worried that flat biomes like plains deserts and snow aren't gonna be flat anymore, but hot damn. A small price to pay for salvation.

I really cannot wait to build in a giant cave like this. im surprised everyones focusing on the size of it and the other items being introduced but i havent seen a single comment about the possibilities of building underground now! i want to build an entire undergound city cause now i dont have to paintstakingly dig it all out!
It would be really cool if these enormous caverns had some hanging light source that only illuminated the ceiling, thus letting mobs spawn, but still showing the scale and beauty of the cave.
I keep coming back to this because the music is so nice and relaxing
Wow, even though they had those disclaimers, I still feel like a couple new things were introduced.
For one thing, they mentioned that the glowing ores were being used as a placeholder for new light sources. We already know that we're getting the glowing berries, I wonder what other cool light sources we'll find underground next!
Also, they did mention that mountains would not look that, but I think they were just referring to the generation. From the video, I think we'll be seeing biomed mountains, or maybe a rework of the biomed hills in the next update, because they certainly looked different.
Not to mention the great look of village, which may imply better structure integration to surrounding environment!

@@daversini Did they show the candles in this video? Candles definitely seem like a cool feature to me. I think they're going to be kind of like sea pickles, but not underwater. Perhaps they will also come in 16 different colors.

Mapping out the controls was tricky
Please keep those Mountains in Minecraft. They are beautiful, I’d love to build in them, and they are already almost done by the looks of things. The only thing I would add are rock formations like in the mega taiga. Some examples of the beautiful generation include: 0:02, the cliff side to the left, 0:08 with the valley, and 2:21 with the jungle and birch cliff. These would be so fun to traverse, and add a lot of beauty to the game. Please like this so he’s sees it, it’s not for clout, I just need these in Minecraft. They could be called foothills. The only biome I didn’t like with it was the desert. Please Henrik, if you see this please keep these. I’m begging you
about the high land over the ocean, i just realized that the stone shore biome is the only biome that resembles a cliff at an ocean. it would be a fantastic choice to have biomes occasionally drop suddenly at a shore!
I had the same idea a few months back! It would be awesome if puffins spawned there too!
I liked it in the desert, but i think that desert should to be like a lot of biomes inside it, example: cacti forest, sand dunes, volcanic deserts, etc to allow the generation being more variated, that sand mountains looked so well, but just needed some rocky spots, steril dirt to look like a desert hill, or maybe turn it into a sand dune.
@@Jesus-qv5sw yes! If you just google pictures of Arizona Mountains (white tanks is a good one, I hiked it a few weeks back) they are so beautiful!!! I’d love to see them in Minecraft. I just don’t like the fact that it’s only sand and cactus on the mountain. All those biome ideas are amazing though I’d really love to see them
@@tracyfelmerjohnson8194 I were talking also of something like Mexican Sonora desert, like Gran Desierto de Altar or El Pinacate (this last one is a group of extinct volcanoes in middle of the desert that looks really amazing, they are located in front of the Organ Pipe Monument, just separated by the border, im mexican and i were in there) it will be a great addition to minecraft landscapes.
With the introduction of archeology and new caves I really hope for cave paintings as a rare encounter in caves
Even though the ores only glow for demonstration, I think it would be cool to have a larger cave type with a common glowing block spawning on walls and the ceiling. Could feel really cool to walk into a huge, lit up cave.
This song is so relaxing and with those new caves just makes for a fantastic atmostpher! I am so hyped for the new update!

For those who are asking whether the height limit and depth will be increased:
We have nothing confirmed, but we have two solutions. That would be very complicated and could even mess with the generation of worlds. Simply, the code would have to be completely redone and it wouldn't be so cool... Especially for the old worlds, although I would love to see it and I seriously believe that the limit may increase, as the deep dark caves are well below the subsoil.
1. The bedrock would become another block. So, putting a new code and ID, changing the values... Without changing the generation above and without creating those giant walls. After that, the void limit would be much deeper, lowering it and placing the new bedrock at the new lower limit. But of course, that would not be simple at all, as we all know that the end would need the same and the void is right below.
the main layer. The nether would need new limits. (Basically, a bedrock will be breakable and a new bedrock will be further down in the subsoil. It is like a transition to the new layer of the earth.)
2. The most risky and simple is to raise the levels of land and ocean in the new generations, but that would create walls in the old worlds... And also giving the possibility to increase the height limit.
I don't think they will increae terrain. Mountains don't generate above 128 blocks so it's very unlikely they will change the world limit
Imagine needing to get netherite pickaxe to break bedrock and to go to stronghold facing warden, that would be epic
@@ahmed4363 They need to change the depth limit. I would never have imagined a deep cave very close to the surface.
@@ahmed4363 The new mountains can generat way above clouds, the caves are also extremely deeper so I think and really hope they will raise the terrain
The new world-height customisation options suggest that old worlds could keep the old limit, even into new chunks, and new worlds will get deeper caves.

I think the glowing crystal like shapes they had for decoration in the live stream, might have been a little sneak peak. To what the new light source will be.
They’ve already added that style crystal to Dungeons, which I love.. and we’ve already seen things from dungeons come to minecraft! So why not?!
OMG. I were cautious with C&C update but this clip reafirmed that 1.17 will be superb. But, those tall cliff and deep caves are actually posible in todays 256-block Minecraft?, if not and 1.17 finaly increases upper building layer yo tdk, 512, 1024... what would happen with our old worlds if se update them to 1.17?
if you didn't know, the new mountains can go up to y=450. no word yet on changing build limit or changing the average ground level

did you know, theyve actually half released a bit of the generation in bedrock edition! you can tell because there is huge caves, huge new mountains etc.

As a person who lives in 2023, I can confirm that this was exciting and we can now see these generations ingame everywhere I go. And also I hope Armadillo wins the vote...
I just at least want this sort of mountain generation to be it’s own world generation option when creating a world, since it it was said that it will likely not be the final mountainous look.
My small ideas (sorry for my english):
● Somehow improve bats
● Add rats that are very atmospheric and not player friendly
● Zombies in caves can spawn with a pickaxe in hand

so glowing ores won't be in the final version, but there will be underground light sources that should light up the caves similarly

This music would be perfect for mining underground or just exploring the mountains..either one. If the mountains probably leave the guitar but if for the caves I'd take it out because of the calming eeriness of it

This music would be a perfect cave music disc it's so well done and that cave opening is so cool and those mountains are wonderful, clearly, 1.17 will be the greatest update ever all the wonderful people involved in the creation and updating of this game have found a way to top the previous version yet again.
This looks amazing! I hope you make it a more random then today’s Minecraft generation, I think that will make your seed random and special. In today’s Minecraft you know how the different biomes are generated and that makes it a loot more boring to explore. I prefer getting one weird place and 2 really cool places in a world then all being good but the same.
I think that was what made the old world generation so good.
(This applies to mountains and caves)
This. I love beta minecraft's really random and crazy worldgen, and it makes it really special when you find a cool seed because it's less about finding a spawn with easy access to different biomes and more about just finding cool formations, like on gargamel. I'm not asking for a complete reversion of how worlds generate, but making the surface more varied and the general shape less dependent on biome would be amazing, kind of like how cave shapes and cave biomes are apparently now independent.
