Putting in service made THROTTLE TO FLOOR WHILE HOLDING DOWN THE PARK BRAKE BUTTON IGNITION ON. WAIT 5 SECONDS IGNITION OFF. WAIT 5 SECONDS IGNITION ON. THE BRAKE LIGHT WILL FLASH AND SAY PARK BRAKE SERVICE MODE ACTIVE ON DASH. TO GO BACK TO NORMAL MODE. SAME PROCESS EXCEPT YOU PULL UP ON PARK BRAKE BUTTON AND HOLD.
Thanks for watching.

Best video for this by far. Straight to the point. This mobile mechanic appreciates you!
@@stechmer1 your welcome. Glad I could help. Be safe out there!!
Love the tips for those of us without scan tools to do it the “harder” way without! Thanks for posting
Ahh your welcome good sir!!
This worked for me to put my 2022 XLT in to brake maintenance mode. When I tried to take it out of maintenance mode I had problems had to push the brake pedal while holding down the accelerator and holding the brake switch. Just tapped the pedal with my left foot and it worked. Thank you.
Your very welcome. I don't know why some of them you have to hold the brake. Some you don't. It's weird. My buddies 18 you don't have to. My neighbors 22 you do as well. But I'm glad you got it and the video helped.
I did my brakes without putting the vehicle into service mode. I have all these lights on. Brake,Collision Assist,Hill Descent, etc. How can I get these back to normal? Everything was working fine, and all I did was change the pads.
Thank you for this!! Three hours later, finally got it out of brake maintenance mode. 😅
Great video. Short and to the point. Works exactly the same with a key instead of the push button, just simply turn ignition on. Thanks.
Indeed. I should have mentioned that with a push button too. Totally slipped my mind.
Thanks for posting brother, I mean Bearded! Appreciate it. Doing the rears tomorrow, Fronts a little later, they are still in good shape at 39,000 miles. Cheers from Motown.
Your welcome. Your doing rear at 39k? Or you doing it just for preventative?
@@BeardedFordTech they are getting on the thin side and don't want rotor damaged. I live in Michigan so will do it now and not when it's cold, lol Just got caliper grease and they told me they now charge $38 to turn a rotor now at O'reileys. Fkin Brandon, POS. lol
@@robertclymer6948 yeah it used to be free at O'Reilly's. They started charging here too. Remember rear pads are thinner than the front. Min thickness is 3mm. Is there a local shop around town you trust to turn your rotors?
@@BeardedFordTech I have no idea on that Bearded one. This is the first car I bought and kept over 3 yrs so never had to do brakes, batteries, etc etc. When I did brakes on my 67 Mustang Gt, I replaced the front 4 piston Kelsey Hayes calipers and put new pads on, brake lines, master cylinder, brake hoses and I resurfaced the front rotors myself. My F-150 rear rotors are pretty much pristine but wanted to take off .010 to clean em up. I am a retired tech from Marathon Petroleum in Detroit, so got time for the F-150 and my 67 Mustang Gt with a built 460 Big block. Thanks so much for yur comments and feedback sir. Cheers from Motown, Home of Detroit Muscle.
@@robertclymer6948 yeah anytime I replace pads I machine rotors if they are well within spec. If not I replace the rotor. My 65 fastback I built in highschool unconverted to 4 wheel disc brakes. My 68 was drum. How's the weather up there?
Thank you for taking the time to share this info. Sure glad I researched 2019 expedition brake change before I started it. It’s been a long time since I’ve changed brakes and last time I did it there was not an electronic park break! Thanks again for your time.
@dldave1978 your welcome! Not all of them have electronic ones. Like my 2019 ranger doesn't. But this is the procedure for the ones that do. Glad it helped you out
I would bet this info was in the Manual if I bothered to search it out, maybe not, but I am happy to know there is a way to do brakes without a scan tool. I bought a fancy scan tool that can put the truck in service mode. I could have save $200
Unfortunately it's actually not in the owners manual how to do it. It says to see dealer. But in the workshop manual that us techs use it is. And I think you can actually download that workshop manual. You can make a one time purchase. And download it. You will have to create a free account on motorcraft service. Then go to manuals. Always good to have a manual.
I have the 2023 F-150 Lightning, and following your instructions I activated the Brake Maintenance Mode. But for some reason your instructions didn't work for de-activating it after servicing. What finally worked for me was the UA-cam video from Your Home Garage from a year ago. Thanks for posting.
@joeteichert6821 it the opposite of activation for deactivating. Then you step on the brake. I emailed a dude the instructions once too. Some people are having trouble. Some aren't. It's weird.
Very Good Explenation and information,blessing
Thank you. Have a great day!
It's too much like a spaceship to me. 😄🐶🐕
For a 15. It does have a lot of buttons.
Once again great info, clearly explained and easy to follow. I am about to do this with my 2021 Bronco Sport and I was curious if after putting it in service mode, do you push the piston into the caliper or wind it back in? Thanks and have a great day!
Some wind like the f150. Some you push. I'll have to look at workshop manual. Can you email me VIN?
This video’s focus was this guy's face not actually seeing the parking brake. I hate these electronic parking brakes. I have to wonder how many people got hurt because they did know where the E-Brake was when they needed it as it is not where it has always been in vehicles.
When you put it in park the ebrake applies. You don't pull an ebrake going down the road. But yeah hard to find on the left side. Should have just kept them manual. With the good Ole lever.

Just found out for models with an electronic brake booster (basically on models with automatic braking assist and regenerative braking... EDIT: might be the hybrid Regen braking system as suggested below), there is an additional step required to disable the brake booster so it doesn't think there is a leak in the system.
Apparently you just need to press the brake pedal after the car is on and you're holding the other parts in the steps.
Is this something you're familiar with? Just did my brakes this weekend only for it to need a dealership appointment to clear the ABS codes after (exact car is 2020 Ford escape titanium hybrid)
That's a hybrid. If it's a vehicle with just a regular electronic master cylinder you don't have to do that step your referring to. But you still have to put it in service mode to do the front if it has an electronic master cylinder. But yes. Only the hybrids. Hybrids have regen braking because it has an electric motor as well as a gas engine.
@@BeardedFordTech this actually happened after doing rear brakes only, noticed the issue before we touched the fronts (and put it into service mode before that) then no damage.
No regenerative braking system in the back I don't think? (Only looked like the e brake was there). Could still have been the hybrid system since I imagine it's all connected anyways, but that's really good to know!
Any chance damage was done that you know of? Or should the dealer just need to clear the code to restore braking
@mahoganybiscuit2 it's a hybrid it has tegen braking. The back is tied into the front. They are going to have to use the scan tool to clear the code. If it comes back after they do that and throws the same code then there's damage in one or more components of the brake system. That's only happened once. Another tech was working on one and messed up the master cylinder. It was a pain to replace.
@@BeardedFordTech makes sense, thanks for the wealth of knowledge! Anything else I may have messed up/need to pay attention to on the hybrid system with brakes in the future?
Thank you!
Your welcome 👌
What sequence of things will activate the mechanic to magically appear and replace the pads and rotors?
Hahahaha, this is good timing for this video since I’m replacing my brakes soon.
The sequence to getting the mechanic is an email lol. Does yours have electronic park brake?
Thanks for video, question I didn't put in park maintenance mode, I didn't know this had to be done until after I did the work. So now I have park brake malfunction.
How can I reset this problem?
@rogerdinarte6863 how did you get the piston in with putting it in brake service mode? I would try putting it in service mode. And then out of service mode. If thay doesn't work. You have a bigger problem
21 and up you have to press the brake for 1 second while in the off position. Figured this out the hard way. I work at a Chevy dealer
@green1889 no you don't. Literally did this today. And for this video I was reading it right off the workshop manual the guy holding my phone had on the laptop in his lap
@@BeardedFordTech I’m not disagreeing. But I literally just did a f150 xlt at my shop in the last 2 hours. And yes that was the only way we could get it out of service mode. I sat there for an hour lol. I gave it to my service writer bc I was fed up with it. The only way we found out about the brake peddle, was a ford forum
@green1889 to go in or out of service mode. I've had to do my tahoes at work. Very weird process for them. Hold button until it flashes within 3 seconds. Let go and press the button. It was weird. But hey, if it worked for you, then it worked. I'll double-check on this. Priciate you telling me.
@@BeardedFordTech crazy does it work for Tahoe’s? For the newer chevys we hook up our mdi which is a scan tool from gm and we deactivate it over tech line connect which is the computer software that connects with vehicle. To be exact it was a 21 ford f150 with the newer interior with the large center screen
@green1889 yes thays how I do my 22 tahoes in my fleet. Hold button turn ignition on. Keep golding till brake flashes. Release then within 3 seconds press brake button and it puts it in service mode. I had to use alldata to figure that out
Thank you 🇺🇸
Your welcome. 😁
Good to know if you don't have a bi-directional scan tool.
Exactly. Anybody can do it💯💯
I have a 2017 ford edge and my parking brake light came on does that mean that I need brakes ?
@RalphDaigle the red park brake light does not mean you need brakes. It comes on when the park brake is active or if you are low on brake fluid. Or have a electronic park brake malfunction. Unless your brake pads have sensors then it could indicate pads but that would usually say service brake system
Can't get this to work on my 2022 Maverick. Is there any other sequence to take it out of brake maintenance mode?
@rangerst29 nope. It's for all ford vehicles. If you can't do it. You need a scan tool
@@BeardedFordTech thanks for the reply. Turns out one of the parking brake connectors wasn't fully clicked in. Got it👍
@rangerst29 awesome! Glad it was something simple
Could not get it to work on the 2015 F150 I’m working on
@joeheadley6024 did you follow the steps in order? Ignition on. Push the park brake button and hold. At the exact same time, the throttle should be held to the floor. 5 seconds turn ignition off while still holding throttle and button. Turn ignition back on. It should flash and say park brake maintenance mode. Then you can turn it off. Haven't had any issues doing this on any Ford vehicle. Literally saw me do it in this video. I was reading the manual( on the laptop in the camera mans lap on the workshop manual) to verify the steps
Hello, hoping someone can answer a quick question…. I replaced the front rotors & pads on my 2022 XLT before putting it into maintenance mode. Now the brakes are really sudden. Looking for some advice/help
Why would you put it in brake maintenance mode for the front? That is only for the rear. Unless you have an electronic master cylinder, which I don't believe the 22 XLT does. Brakes are sudden? As in you press the brakes and? That's because you put new rotors and pads on the front. Now, they are thicker than what they were when you replaced them (like when the truck was new). You put it in brake service mode when you didn't need to, and it readjusted the rear pads.
@@BeardedFordTechwasn’t aware it was only for the rear… after replacing the front and pumping pedal, I was getting quite a few alerts for the braking and service systems (errors). Test drive brake was going almost to the floor and stopping really sudden or slamming. This was all before putting into maintenance mode. Now I can’t get it out of maintenance mode lol
@nickkasperek1561 to take it out of maintenance mode is reverse for putting it in maintenance mode. You step on the pedal afterward. There's something you didn't do right. If all you did was replace rotors and pads on the front, you put everything on. Then pump the brakes. Then start and pump the brakes. If your pedal went to the floor, check to see if the brake line is twisted when you put the caliper on. If it had an electronic master cylinder, you wouldn't have been able to decompress the piston on the front calipers. Check the brake lines. Make sure they aren't twisted.
I removed the caliper and the pads before putting it into service mode. What happens if you do not put it into service mode??
Tou won't be able to push the piston back I to the caliper. And you won't get the caliper back on. You sure it has electronic park brake? What year is it
the 2023 ford F-350 has electronic parking. is it the same way
Yes. It's the same for all ford vehicles with electronic parking brake
Does that only apply for the rear breaks or do I have to do it when I work on the front breaks .
What kind of vehicle do you have? If it's just rear electronic park brake then it's only for the rear. If you have an electronic master cylinder then you will have to do it for the front and the rear. Otherwise your going to mess up a very expensive master cylinder.
@@BeardedFordTech 2018 f150
@@richardkenworthy9312 just the rear.
After your done changing the brakes do you still have to pump the pedal up after its out of maintenance mode
Yes. Maintenance mode releases the ectrnoic motor so you can push the piston in. Then we done. Take it out of service mode. It engages the motor. So the tabs on the pad are in the correct position on the caliper piston. You must still pump the brakes to get a firm pedal.
Thank you!!!
@@eddieryan63 your welcome
Is that gonna pull the brake caliber back? So I can put pads on and new rotors on
No. It release the electronic motor so you can push the piston back in to put your pads in. If you don't put it in service mode you won't be able to push the piston in at all
Thanks
@@darronadams5588 your welcome.
BFT what's park brake service mode?
If you have an electronic parking brake you can't just take the rear brakes apart to do rotors and pads. You won't be able to push the caliper piston back in. You have to put it in park brake service mode which releases the rear brake caliper piston for you to do your brakes. After everything is together you take it out of service mode and it will auto magically adjust the piston to where it needs to be for normal braking and for park brake. You don't have to pump the brake pedal. If you don't put it in service mode and try to push or in some other vehicle twist the piston back it you will damage the caliper motor and possibly the master cylinder.
Is that for all trucks 2015 up or how do you know if their electronic brakes
2015-2023. F150 and SUV. You will know because you won't have a parking brake lever. It will be a button. The truck is on the left side knee bolster. And the SUV is the same. The smaller SUV is usually a button next to the gear dial
Thank you appreciate that info.
Instead of click, click, click you hear a yee ow sound.
hi I did not do that when i changed my brake pads is that okey
Rear or front? This is for if your doing the rear brakes and have electronic parking brake. Or a newer one that has an electriconic master cylinder. If you have electronic park brake and didn't do this. You wouldn't be able to do the rear brakes. You wouldn't be able to push the caliper piston in. What year is yours.
It doesnt work, i did exactly what you did and nothing shows up on the dash
@marianlargeanu6071 works Every time for me. Are you holding the throttle? Are you turnig the key to the on position? Was literally reading out of the workshop manual on a laptop while performing it.
@@BeardedFordTech yeah, im holding down the throttle , pressing the ebrake and keeping it like that while turning the ignition off and then back on but then nothing pops up on the dash and no sound plays like ive seen in other videos, nothing changes, could it be because mine is a european model so it has a different dash?
