as always so informative and done with a lovely smile. Many thanks Joy.
You are very kind Andy. Thank you very much also!
Thank you for that. Chuck
You very welcome and thank you also. I wish you lots of wonderful practising Chuck!
Thank you so much for this great instruction! My technique practice and pieces have improved much more quickly as a result of watching your videos, and I am excited to implement what has been discussed in this particular video. Clear demonstration and profound conceptual depth. These smooth bowing techniques and movements are definitely one of the fundamental points of development to create a more beautiful violin sound and certainly a delicate legato. Just keeping this in mind, I will get more out of my sevcik bow studies. I was starting to figure out on my own the importance of the various joints in smooth bowing, but this has made my inclinations much more concrete and tangible. Thanks again
Awww... I am so happy to hear that my videos have been helpful to you Aidan. Thank you very much for your such kind words. I wish you lots of wonderful music making!
Absolutely correct that figure of 8 bowing really does help because I remember having a master class with maestro Robert Vijay Gupta in Japan not him only also many other violinists too, it is absolutely easy to follow your teaching and hope you don't mind I always ask my students to follow your teaching samples as well. Thank you. superb
So glad to hear that. Thank you also! :)
best video I have ever seen as far as technicality is concern

Figure eights help with bow changes. It helps smooth things out..take the weight off a little and helps put/add the weight gradually
Being a beginner I learn a lot from Ur videos, thank u so much
Thank you so much. I think I finally understand how to get a more sustained bowing. ❤️
You are so welcome!
You're amazing, Joy! Thank you so much!

you explained the figure eight better than Yehudi Menuhin in his BBC videos. now I understand what he was showing. thank you. ☺
That's such a wonderful comment! Thank you as well!

VERY EXCELLENT JOY !THANK YOU !
So beautiful! I would like to study Adagio from Partita n°1 by Bach! Thank you very much for this video and for the great explanation of the importance of all joints for mastering a smooth and nice bow change, Joy! Wonderful!
Thank you Sara as well :)
Thank you so much! It explained and helped so much!
finalllyyyyy!!! one of the my biggest doubt got cleared, i always wondered everyone saying keep the hair parallel to bridge but when i saw good violinists the hair is not actually parallel, its more like fluidity in the movement. You are one gifted instuctor madam joy. The brilliant one we have ever got.thank you
I am so glad that this was helpful
Thanks for sharing your wisdom. I live in a small city in Brazil and I don't have the chance to have a proper course. Your videos are excellents.
Thank you Rafael. I'm so glad to hear that I can be helpful. Please feel free to ask questions.
Rafael Levy Ela é maravilhosa, né?? Amoo
Thanks, Joy! I found that this also applies very well when trying to play a single long note on more than one bow stroke. Being a flutist, I struggled with figuring this out. Thanks again!
you are welcome
Superb
I am putting a thumbs up on every video here. It took me a few days of seeing these videos and others to realize what a gem we have here. Maybe I'll upload a video of myself so people can comment. Not sure why I get a poor sound from my A and E strings even after changing the strings to Prim (Goldbrokat on E) and experimenting with too little, too much rosin and tension in the bow. I ordered the rosin you recommended. Thank you for all these great videos!
Thank you so much for your encouraging comments !! I really hope more people find the information they need.
thanks for your advice, I learn a lot from your videos, so many good tutorial
Thank you so much !
really great, thanks
Wow. This was really helpful. I'm so glad I found your channel especially since I started playing the violin just at the beginning of June last month. Your teaching skills are insane. I have a question, how do I stop tensing up my neck so much? I swear my neck and shoulders get so tense you might think I was trying to lift a dumbbell. Also, how do I keep my fingers in the correct position for vibrato? I only recently started really getting it (thanks to your vibrato videos) but whenever I think of doing it my fingers are in a completely different position than they should be.
Thank you Saphanna. Please check this video in that regard. I hope this would help. Happy and healthy violin playing! ua-cam.com/video/7jXJiZ5lOTw/v-deo.html

Dear professor
Do you believe that a unstraight bow stick has a incidence on bouncing ?
Best regards from France
Greetings to you also Thierry from Canada.
Yes, uneven bow stick such as bent stick can produce unwanted bouncing as it looses the contact to the string sometimes. However try to use slower bow speed which will allow you to control the bow better. Happy practising!
While trying to bend my fingers to do a smooth bow change, my thumb always tends to slip off of its position and in between the stick and the bow hair. Do you have any tips for what I may be doing wrong?
Hi Bawk, yes, here is a video about it. I hope you can try. Happy practising! ua-cam.com/video/NOCO6rzPIyc/v-deo.html
wht strings u r using on this violin vch are the best g and d strings
Thanks, Peter Infeld mainly and some Larsen Tzigane. Happy violin playing!
Hello Ms. Joy
Can you please make a video on 16 notes detache bowing with figure 8 bowing. Thank you :)
you may find the answer here: ua-cam.com/channels/FB0UCodO5DjcLxLBRzkG-g.htmlsearch?view_as=subscriber&query=16+notes
Joy is the fingers pushing the bow on the up bow near the frog ? Great teaching, excellent !
sure, I will do a video but it will take me a few weeks
❤️❤️❤️🎻🎻🎻👏👏👏👏👏
My left pinky goes up. I think it is a pinky tension. How can I fix that.
Hi Wael, Tension on pinky is one of most common issues among many violinists. Here are some videos which might be helpful to you. Happy practising! ua-cam.com/video/ekEflT0fOCc/v-deo.html ua-cam.com/video/gISjc8dn9I4/v-deo.html
Good day! 😊
Could you please address the music reference that you used in this video?... Awesome music
It's the Bach solo sonata number 1, fist movement
Joy Lee thank you so much 😊
I don't know if this can be done in one video, but could you address getting rid of that "beginner sound"
You could try practicing in front of the mirror to get a straight bow. that begginer sound is mostly caused by a crooked bow and you should try getting better rosin. Back then, I used a really cheap rosin brand from China and it made my playing sound really scratchy, but now I use better quality rosin and the scratchiness went away. :)
Of course! I would be happy to do a video about it.
at 2:17 there is a male sound Oo
Hi Joy, I've been playing violin 1.5 years and practice the piece "Flower Duet" from Lakmé but have some problems with the 6/8. Can you help me with it? thanks in advance ;-)
Yes, gladly! I'll make a video about it. The flower duet is such a beautiful piece!
Great! Thank you very much ;-)
Hi!
How's the thumb doing during the bow change? Does it keep bent?
Hope can have an answer.
Hi Joshua, the right thumbs get curved near the frog and straightened near the tip. Here is a video about bow grip ua-cam.com/video/GOG3i61aNa4/v-deo.html
Hey. What's name do you play on 0:08 minutes? Please, I don't remember.
Bach Solo Sonata No. 1 1st mov in g minor
Do these concepts apply to double stops?
Yes in general. When playing double stops, the movements of joints can be less or quicker especially while playing 3 strings at once.
I was able to do the 8 bowing however Im a beginner, should i stick to this rather than the straight bowing? Thanks in advance 😊
the 8 will always be there but sometimes very small, unless you want a hard bow stroke

Hi Tim, Thanks for your interest. Unfortunately at the moment I can not take any new student as all the lesson times in my studio are taken. I am sorry that I can not be more helpful. I hope you can still benefit from the free videos on my UA-cam Channel. Happy music making!
