  • HI EVERYONE! This video is a long one, so buckle up (I promise it's worth it). WELCOME to PART 2 of turning bullets into hair jigs. In this video I run through my process for tying up hair jigs for walleyes. Is this the only way to do it? NO! However, this method has worked well for me for many years, and I hope it points you in the right direction for coming up with your own process. Making your own lures is super fun, very rewarding, and I encourage everyone to give it a try.

Very good video on basic fly tying for Walleye. One point I'd mention is bucktail color positioning. Typically fly "streamers" or bait fish imitations are tied with the light color on the bottom and dark on the top as the fly moves through the water column. This will be dictated by the positioning of the weight. If you have a jig head, as in this video, or dumbbell eyes, the fly will travel with that weight facing the bottom of the lake or river. Therefore, the lighter color hair is usually tied to that side of the hook. GPS thread (100 denier) is a good choice for flies like these.
Another word of warning. Fly tying is very addictive. Watch out. You can spend a lot of money having fun.

210 IMO is more for Musky stuff. 140 range is plenty of tension for a bucktail or fly for walleye. 140 you will have much less bulk and you can pull with a pliers and you won't pull the hair out, it will tear before it pulls out. In theory, if you put enough tension, you shouldn't even need a head cement or glue but everyone tops it off with Sally's, UV or just simply head cement but Sally's is cheaper. That said, if you don't break thread often with 140 your not putting enough tension. In time you'll learn how much an RARELY break the thread.
Other than that extra bit of info, great video.
