  • Buying a used woodstove can save a bundle.... Way more than switching your car insurance....
    This is a restoration video of a used Dutchwest 2461 catalyst woodstove. Vermont Castings sells this stove for around $2000 new. The stove in this video was used and purchased within a 2 hour drive for $250. With an additional $75 of materials and parts (stove handle was not included) the stove is complete and installed. It took around 6 total hours to clean, polish, cement and install the stove.
    This is another MTR FAB DIY video. Please like, comment and subscribe.

    • @MTRFAB

      Yes. It just drops in and sits there. Very easy in and out. It's important to remove it first before removing the top as it sticks through the "hat" that covers the catalyst. It's will tear the hat unless you lift the top straight up.

    Thank you for the video. I have been searching for it seems forever trying to find any how to videos on this type of stove. I have had the 2460 model for about 15 years that I bought used. I have had to replace back grate once and the catalytic combustor and refractory. I'm not sure how, but at some point last season, my damper stopped working. When I took the top off to investigate the problem, I noticed the damper was split in two and the inner top is cracked. By chance do you know how to change the inner top? Your video already had it in place when it started.

    • @MTRFAB
      @MTRFAB  10 місяців тому

      It's been a few years since the refurb. I don't recall how that went together. As you mentioned it was already together and looked good to use so I didn't knock it down further. I suppose maybe the parts breakdown diagram in the manual may help you determine how it goes together??? I haven't seen my manual for a bit but I believe last I looked it could be found on the net too. Might be worth getting yourself a copy? I wish you luck with the stove, they are wonderful. I hope you get it set up again. Thanks you for watching and commenting.

    A family friend gave us a Dutchwest 2462 which is very similar to this model and we used it for a whole winter without knowing anything about how to manage it. I didn't even know it had a catalytic system in the top! But thanks to you, I understand exactly how to use it and maintain it in future- once I replace the air distributor, combustor and seal which were all trashed! I wonder if we melted the air distributor through our misuse, or by running the stove too hot. ( I was making biochar in a small pot on top of my fires, so I would really get it blasting to bring the materials up to temperature to burn off by pyrolysis). Any ideas?

    • @MTRFAB
      @MTRFAB  9 місяців тому

      We enjoy these stoves. The first one we had was the next size down. We over fired that since it wasn't exactly big enough to effectively heat our home. Most of the interior plates got consumed. This model has fared much better as it's sized correctly. This one has been used on the catalyst as primary heat since I made the video. All the bits inside are still good. Luckily, I believe Vermont Castings still sells the bits and pieces. Thanks for commenting and watching. Enjoy your stove.

    Great video, thank you. Im still trying to figure out how to remove the damper to service underneath it. What is that gray compound you added in the back? You've shown to check several things i would not have thought of... thanks again.

    • @MTRFAB
      @MTRFAB  3 роки тому

      Thank you for the feedback. The damper can be removed if the top is off. Take a peek at the back side of the damper control. There are a few big washers and a" C" clip. Remove the "C" clip taking care not to allow it to fall down into the back of the stove. Placing a rag over the hole might be a good idea. You need a small Allen key to get the brass handle off. Then all I can say is.... move stuff around a bit. It's hard to explain but you will figure out how it comes apart. It's a little tricky but once apart it went back together a few days later for me with no issues. The gray stuff was stove cement. It can be purchased at your local hardware store, depot or lowes. Good luck and thanks for watching.

    Great video! I really like these and plan to buy a used one but don't have a lot of help to move it. I read they are about 400+ lbs. How much does it come apart? Do you think one guy with a dolly, cart, jack, straps, pallet, etc. could get it moved?

    • @MTRFAB
      @MTRFAB  2 роки тому

      Thank you for watching and commenting. My lady and I moved it.... I knocked it down to the pieces seen in the video. The shell was super heavy still (250+ lbs ). Definitely couldn't have done it alone... I have a few stairs to climb though. I would def say it will be a struggle by yourself unless you are an absolute beast. Getting it out of the truck and upstairs was the challenge for us. I wish you luck. I suggest a helping hand... It will be worth it. The stove is amazing. Thanks again for watching.

    I just bought a Dutchwest 2478 for $550. So far all I can see it needs is the lower refractor which is $300. What else should I go ahead and replace since I'm going to tear into this thing? I know nothing of these style stoves other than from UA-cam and that I now, as of this morning own one..

    • @MTRFAB

      I would just look at the gasketing myself... Mine definitely needed to be redone. Maybe pop the catalyst out and check on that. If the catalyst is plugged the stove won't run well. Good luck with your new purchase. We love our stove. Thank you for watching.

    I have a FA264CCL Consolidated Dutchwest Wood stove. The rear firebox plate is damaged where the plates hang. The replacement part is available and I’m wondering if it’s worth taking on that job? You look like you’ve had some experience taking apart airtight stoves.

    • @MTRFAB
      @MTRFAB  2 роки тому +1

      I do enjoy these stoves! I've never knocked down a FA264CCL myself. I did take a peek at the diagram and it does appear to be similarly built to my stove. It appears as if the back may just be removable without knocking the whole box down. Approach at your own speed though as I can't really help you much more than that. Only recommendations... Careful knocking down...Parts are heavy, brittle and awkward at times. Anything that had sealant when you took it apart just needs to be cleaned up and reapplied before reassembly. Stove work is rewarding. If you have basic tools and some patience I don't think it should be bad. Good luck. Enjoy. Thanks for watching.
