Thank you for making this video. I have a newer 20 year old Dutch west that came with my house. The glass broke and I took the opportunity to take the doors and lid off, regasket it, and throughly clean it.
I noticed the doughnut looking thing under the catalyst. I had no clue you were supposed to open that side knob to add oxygen to the catalyst. Could not figure it out until I saw this video.
That is super cool that it pulls cold air up through the bottom and out that front slot. Blows my mind how much thought goes into these.
I used to just think of wood stoves as a safer alternative to an open hearth fireplace. Truly and engineering marvel to extract every BTU possible from the wood. They save me a ton of cash over my oil furnace.

Brilliant video! I've had my stove for 20 years and is the first time I understood how it works!

This is such an excellent video. Thank you so much for sharing this information. I just rebuilt one of these and I have made two fires so far and I am loving it!!

Wondering how those "modifications" to prevent build-up on the glass worked out and how you made those modifications.

A family friend gave us a Dutchwest 2462 which is very similar to this model and we used it for a whole winter without knowing anything about how to manage it. I didn't even know it had a catalytic system in the top! But thanks to you, I understand exactly how to use it and maintain it in future- once I replace the air distributor, combustor and seal which were all trashed! I wonder if we melted the air distributor through our misuse, or by running the stove too hot. ( I was making biochar in a small pot on top of my fires, so I would really get it blasting to bring the materials up to temperature to burn off by pyrolysis). Any ideas?

I have to replace the thermostat that goes into the top of the catalytic combustor. Online I see they have ones that have 7/8 inch probes and others that are 2 1/8 inch. Would love to know which is the correct one to get. Thank you in advance for any advice.

Did you ever add the air wash modification? I have the same issue on my FA264CCL.
