MET GALA 2021 FASHION ROAST (why can no one follow a theme?)
Вставка
- Опубліковано 27 вер 2024
- The 2021 Met Gala had a theme of “American Independence” to coincide with the 2021 Costume Institute exhibit titled “In America: A Lexicon of Fashion”. Anna Wintour hosted the annual fundraiser in collaboration with Andrew Bolton, the Costume Institute’s Head Curator, as well as with guest co-hosts Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Amanda Gorman, & Naomi Osaka. But let's be real, the idea of following the theme given is always difficult for Met Gala attendees. So get ready for a roast!

Americans not being self-reflective enough on our own culture and fashion history and just showing up inappropriately dressed is maybe the most American thing ever.
Eee
I HATE how accurate this is. Ugh USA USA usa 🤦🏿♂️
The funny thing is that, there's a lack of personal culture in the US, most of their culture is base in other countries cultures as basically they decided to kill almost every single native American back in the day so is a country made out of immigrants since it was colonized and also I consider this is why nationalism is so strong because they don't have anything cultural strong enough to hold to. I remember being in a cultural fair in Mexico City, African booths were the biggest ones full of everything from clothes to jewelry and USA's booth was extremely empty with flags and rock and roll music, it was really depressing 😂
Lol true.
How is that American? You sound ignorant
Grimes sword was made out of melted guns and I just think that her bringing a weapon to the met is the most American thing
AGREED! Guns and the 2nd Amendment are super American so I think the sword made out of a gun is creative!
Absolutely
@Jen Agrippa next time she should bring a rifle and a deer 🤪🇺🇲😭
her accessories match the theme, but not her dress.
Absolutely queen 👸
My brother said that the Met Gala is like comic con but for rich people…. He’s not wrong.
Hilarious 😂
On my part, I'd take Comic Con every time.
at least some comic con costumes are good meanwhile rich people are over here paying millions to dress like ronald mcdonald's ugly little cousin
difference is comic con goers create creative super gorgeous outfits using ultra low budgets. meanwhile, these snobs create garbage outfits with designer logos wasting millions of dollars.
Your brother saw that on a meme
the theme wasn’t even “American Independence” it was “America: A Lexicon of Fashion” so it means, american fashion through the years. I feel like Lupita Nyong'o and Quannah Chasinghorse nailed it
That’s just too generic of a theme.
YEP YEP SO TRUE
Ikr! When he mentioned “American Independence” I was a little confused because I only saw “America: A Lexicon of Fashion” being reported. I just kinda assumed that the former could technically fall under the latter with how broad it was. Nonetheless, good point!
either way.... not showing any of it
Bad communication it seems. I mean, i don't know much about galas, but as in any meeting, i would make sure my guests know what it is about and what to do... Even if its posted in the website and etc, its the organizers' job to spread the right information. I get not all the designs show the theme, but many of them dont fit at all lo!
chris evans should have shown up with his captain america suit, would have been the best outfit of the night 😂
I hope, because of the pandemic you know sucks.
Wow thanks for likes 🤗
absolutely and then he could also meet Veil the security dog...she was so cute
@Taehyung is my king that IS America’s ass
ua-cam.com/video/ex8nHo5f2p0/v-deo.html 💥💥💥
Yep!
I was so confused looking at the outfits I felt like not a lot followed the theme but maybe i'm incredibly ignorant lol so I cant wait to see what you think about it
Also for those who wear very simple stuff at the Met Gala wHyYYYYYYY it's your opportunity to go OFFFF
no you're right. a lot just wore something they thought looked good and didn't care for the theme.
ALSO (ok i have a bunch of thoughts lmao) personally i think that even though some are wearing a beautiful dress made by American designers, I still feel like it's not enough to be in the theme? I don't know?? Like i don't remember who but someone did a dress made of jeans stuff and that feels inherently american and thus on theme. Am i making any sense, idk. lol
@@Wooplot That's what I thought but that's really a shame knowing how people played the game so well in the previous years
Agreeed - the lack of western wear and Ralph Lauren and old Hollywood over the top glamour but modern made me so bummed. After two years of no fashion, we needed this.
What’s more American than taking from European designers and calling it American
YES!!! Finally someone said it 😩
Bahahahaha 😭😂
The shaaade
Really, tho. Chanel?! 😂
Haha true but they could've tried harder to fit the theme.
I really think Lupita nailed the theme. Her hair was inspired by artist Lorna Simpson, which is representative of the experiences of black women’s hair in culture. Was excited to hear your point made in the video, just wish more research was done.
Yes. Hers was one of my favorites. Only agree with him about the small detail about it being all denim. But hers was one of the bests.
Lupita Nyong'o is seriously a fashion icon that the world sleeps on. She slays every single time, and I stan!!!
her hair is not fashion her outfit is and it did not suit the theme apart from being denim and black hair does not belong to Americans Its just part of it as much as any other races' hair so everyone there could represent the theme with their hair....erm nope..that's not what the met galas about its about fashion not hair
I think american culture is very well represented by how messy this was.
Lmaooo
😂😂😂
You ain't wrong😂

the met gala is like spirit week at school, everyone “follows” the theme but nobody, and i mean nobody looks similar.
That is true.
Except for the girls who plan matching outfits with their friends lol
@@myafrorocks That is also a good point there

Rihanna said her look was her elevating the black hoodie into couture, something African Americans are discriminated by police for. I still don't like the look but I appreciate it more now that I know what she wanted it to mean.
I can see that idea on the dress now that I see your comment
If you have to explain the look...
@@tracisr yeah exactly! I really enjoyed her look :)
@@sito7186 i personally kinda thought it was self explanatory but to each their own
@@sito7186 a lot of people actually got the idea of elevating streetwear with the oversized cape/dress look and the beanie but to each their own ig
47:23 I’m sorry but I feel like you did Lupita’s look and the concept of the look a massive disservice. I feel like it definitely hits the “American independence” theme because lets not forget that cotton, the main ingredient of denim, was an industry built off the backs of slavery. Not to mention, you brought up the idea of taking something iconic to American couture and modernising it. I feel that the denim dress is already a reference to the Britney Spears’ all denim look (an iconic American red carpet moment), but with a modern twist that is that purple(?) diamond-speckled breakage in the denim dress.
But to each their own I guess :(
I was just super bummed that all you had to say was “denim,,, great, thank you.” ;-;
fully agree with this!! her outfit was honestly one of my favourites, imo it was one of the most meaningful and interesting ones
I think he was agreeing that is was an American look because of the denim, he was just unimpressed because it was an ugly dress and not that strong of a connection
@@matthewspinazze4118 It’s the reluctance in his tone when he says “we are hitting the theme…” that didn’t do it for me. He follows it up with “what is it doing, what is it saying, what is its meaning?” which shows that the only connection to the theme he sees is the most obvious being denim. Which to me is such a disappointing take on the look.
The connection doesn’t have to be obvious, imo it’s better when the look subtlety tugs at different references of American couture but also culture. I feel like If he looked into the intentions of the designers, he would’ve been able to pick up that subtle connection ;-;
OH wow I actually didn't really see the detail of the diamond breakage until you mentioned it omfg. That's beautiful.
Very well said. 🙂
criticizing this year’s met gala is the most patriotic that all of us have ever been and will ever be
Not even him match the theme for this video 😂😂😂
true and sad
up until now i’ve never ever said “it’s not *american* enough” lmao
ua-cam.com/video/f6g-6wmNG5k/v-deo.html Met gala !
😂😂😂
bringing a weapon to an event is the most american thing u can do so grimes was pretty spot on.
It was made out of an ar15… it was intentional. When I learned that I was like…. Okay maybe points were made
Right and lots of mass shooting shooters use those rifles too.
Nsjsjskak not american but i think she resembles liberty statue somehow---
@@Simoneslegs exactly the point. The sword is decorative and not sharp. Grimes talked about how it's a project where people relinquish their guns to make these prop art pieces and it makes the world a little safer. Dune is also strongly anti slavery. Her ensemble was all about "fighting" for peace and the future.
@Ferret Mom it's made from a melted down American gun.
idk I wish there was more discussion about Lupita's look besides "it's denim". The cotton and indigo dye used to produce denim is a direct reference to the labor of slaves during the American slave trade. When I learned that detail, it really shook me, so it's one of my favorites for that alone.
And while I'm not a Kim K. fan, her look was also one of my faves! I didn't pick up on her "iconic silhouette" reasoning, BUT it did remind me of ppl posting black squares on IG as some sort of "solidarity" for BLM, as if just showing up and having something black really accomplished anything. (And as for the Slenderman reference... you're absolutely right, I love anything spooky👻)
I just kinda feel like so many people were disappointed this time, not only because so many guests missed the mark (OOF), but also because when they DID hit the mark, it wasn't obvious enough to be easily spoon-fed to the public without a little extra lateral thought...
same and i agree about Lupita too she was paying O Mage to the black 70s with the denim the 80's black scene with the black sparkles - whatever for the flare out the waste look forever but trending it up to just one side like a split theme - I LOVED IT the hair is so American Black scene for years and years just no one wanted to know about it - but now its all about BLACK - I looked at it for a sec will have to go back and have Lupita moment if I can find her on vogue - it seems everyone else got a video - no one will read this so we love it hehe thats what Im saying anywayz (o;
P
Grimes’ sword fits the theme tho. Theres nothing more American than bringing weapons everywhere
But swords are still very medieval European, not so much American, because by the time the USA was founded, guns were already invented and used much more widely than swords.
@@SmilyXDDD and her sword is forged from a melted gun
@@SmilyXDDD Lady justice. Very american.

The day the general public understands that the MET is supposed to be interesting and on theme instead of "pretty", I will find peace
Exactly, it’s supposed to be crazy, never before seen, unpractical, it’s not prom
but then it’s funny because when someone does a crazy out there look people bash it, but that’s what the met is
@@zoe7560 🤣🤣yes exactly.
Does interesting have to be over the top all the time though?
@@dreamer19990 yes.
To me, Kim Krdashian is one of the most referential looks to American culture, the fact that her silhouette is so recognizable speaks a lot about celebrity culture which is quintessentially American

The met gala needs someone who approves the looks before celebrities go through with it. Or just stop having themes.
Anna Wintour does that. She also has a say in who is allowed to attend
I can’t believe you didn’t mention Quannah Chasinghorse. She looked absolutely stunning in her gold winged dress and authentic Navajo turquoise jewelry borrowed from an actual family member while simultaneously honoring her widely misrepresented Native American heritage. She completely slayed the Met both in beauty and following the theme to a T!
While she is Native American, she has a tribe that she represents. I think it's too much pressure for anyone to say she could encapsulate all of Native American culture when she just belongs to one.
Maybe next video
YES her look was beautiful and she honored her culture and it smashed the theme.
Nikki tutorials did so well too repping Marsha P Johnson. I can believe he ain’t talk about both of them. They both matched the theme better than anybody

I'm interested to hear your take on Quanna Chasinghorse. The indigenous model who wore Dundas and turquoise jewelry from the Navajo tribe. Oh I just realised he went in alphabetical order
I interpreted Kim’s dress as a commentary on how influential she is on making culture today, so iconic that we recognise her instantaneously from only her silhouette.
Honestly I thought her look was pretty iconic idk why everyone's hating on it
I was thinking the exact same!!
Also BLM….. blacked out like what was done on profile pics
Not a bad interpretation!
It also could mean how toxic and aggressive is gossip and paparazzi culture and she's trying to hide from them, or maybe about how celebrities are actually the shadow of their character they represent, it also a lot of meanings, but the only sure thing is that she's iconic
He sounds like a fed-up professor who’s scolding the students for not understanding the assignment. Lol
Anna Wintour gotta start putting out detailed theme descriptions with the Met Gala invites at this point bc the misinterpretations (or just complete lack of effort) are out of control 😭 I don’t understand why you would show up if you’re just going to wear a random red carpet look unrelated to the event. I thought the celebs would redeem themselves after the disaster that was Camp but this year was even worse smh
Sonny, I totally agree with you. I also love your name. Cheers.
i completely agree, the theme was so vague that i couldn’t understand as well lmao
Yeah, most of these celebs look clueless, and us who witnessing it and trying so hard to appreaciating fashion, couldn't even enjoy it much. It's supposed to be the pinnacle of fashion art and work every year.
I think it's vague and wide cuz it allows a lot of creativity from topics to movements but i agree i wonder if it would have been specific maybe they would have followed it better ig
At the same time she's the one who choses some ugly boring looks like the one anitta was wearing and other people too

As a non-American, I associate so much of American culture with pop culture. Iconic fashion moments from Ms Grace Kelly, Jackie O, Michael Jackson, Cher, Madonna, art references to Andy Warhol, Basquiat, Keith Haring and just so so so much iconic pop culture imagery they could have tapped into and it gave just soooo booooring 🥱🥴
All I want is a drag queen look based around Andy Warhol's artwork like PLEASE, give more attention to how he was very openly gay and did drag himself! Utilize how he depicted the "pop culture" of American foods and stars! God I want more stuff that references him!
Ok but honestly...... how come no one came dressed as madonna? As micheal jackson? Didn't even have to be in a costume way, of course, make it modern, put it in your own spin, just do something!!!!
Thank you!! So many Americans think they have "no culture" but they are just ignorant about pop culture history 🤣🤣
As a American, I can say we missed so many references and opportunities. Not only for a reference, but to also to have fun, and respect a lot of people that make greater America culture. Literally no one though to invite literally Captain America, or do a more “costume “ look this close to Halloween…and lack of indigenous community involvement really is just sad.

Ciara’s dress references her husband’s number and team. The NFL has this concept called the color rush uniform where teams will wear alternate colors and designs other than their standard home or away uniforms for one or two games a season. These uniforms are usually brightly colored and rely less on logos and design lines and more on color. Ciara is doing the Seahawks color rush uniform which is a bright, highlighter green from head to toe and is universally panned by football fans. The fact that she’s taken one of the most hated uniform designs in all of football and made it chic, topped off with her husband’s Super Bowl ring, makes both deep sports and fashion references and I love her for that.
I love this so so so so much. “Oh, your dress is one of a kind? My husband is the only one who can wear this number in this color, and is famous for doing so. Oh, your bling is expensive? Mine had to be EARNED and can’t be bought.” Etc etc, not only high fashion but a serious flex on the other attendees. 😂
Yeah, I know the cut wasn't all that special, but I appreciated Ciara's dress the most, as I think it very clearly nailed the theme.
So essentially what I've gotten outta this is that the NFL has "shiny uniforms" and the Seahawks happen to have the shiny Espeon of the uniforms?
Exactly. Also, it's Russell WILSON that she's married to, not Westbrook as he stated.
As a football fan I was so happy to see Ciara wear this. This was what I wanted to see at the Met. Ciara and Russell Wilson have such a beautiful marriage.
I mean to be fair not following directions and dressing boring is pretty accurate for an American theme!
youre not wrong
Except New Yorkers 🥶 they love style .. the rest of us in America .. are eh

a european once told me on the internet that europeans dress more minimalistic and low-key, and americans dress annoyingly crazy and over-the-top. honestly, i lived i philadelphia and new york- i see people wearing pink barbie outfits with pink heels at coffee shops and at the same time people wearing a t-shirt and leggings. I dont think a country should be defined by one thing- either boring or crazy. Americans dress differently, theres not one style. I lived in a small town in pennsylvania for a while as well, and i would go to school and see kids in sweats, but at the same time i would see girls wearing grungy looking goth outfits
Could definitely be a European theme too.. most their countries’ fashion is 😬

Timothee’s look made me think of the “business on top, casual on bottom” look made very popular for all those work zoom meetings this past year!
Okay but Barbie Ferreiras outfit was so genius, as the outfit is associated with the Great Gatsby which symbolizes the American dream. Soooo I think it’s pretty on theme and so stunning!
Very Art Deco ish that’s what I liked the most
It’s so stunning
Yes! It’s stunning and is a great interpretation of the theme.
I thought it was referencing flappers and the women's independence. But yes, American dream as well!
Great Gatsby shows the facade and emptiness of the American Dream, really.
Lupita's dress is beautiful, Unique and Iconic, 10-20years down the line it will still be recognized as Lupita's look.
Ooh, I wanted to mention since I did a quick scroll through the comments and didn't see anyone mentioning it: the "peg the patriarchy" slogan was-once again-a prime example of a big, privileged, white-led brand ripping off a small, independent POC designer. The phrase was apparently coined in 2015 by Luna Matatas as a cheeky metaphor for "subverting the system that requires subservience within a gender binary," in Luna's own words. I think it's kind of sad that Cara's Dior corset got all this coverage with people both praising and mocking the catchphrase, while the phrase's origin and intent is so underdiscussed.
Ive seen many people discussing the origin in this comment section alone
No one cares about it's origin, it's a sentence and you can't copyright it.
Also seeing anal penetration as a synonym for being humiliated, coerced, dominated... it adds up to the stereotype of gay men being less manly because they get penetrated... As "women" do...
@@blackcat6508 it's a trademarked phrase LMAO you absolutely CAN
I also think Cara was just watching a lot of Drag Race because after Bimini Bon Boulash's similar statements/catchphrase-y takeaways from her time on the show went super viral it's like the whole "___ the patriarchy" is the "it" edgy slang phrase of the season again with no one actually looking into what it means and the origins of it all let alone what the definition of "patriarchy" even is and how it affects fashion in the modern sense, especially in which fashion has been weaponized as a tool of discrimination and oppression throughout time here in America.....it's underwhelming and predictable and basic and boring and I didn't seek out any interviews with Cara but I'll bet you when someone asked her to explain her outfit she probably gave what was from her perspective an empowering iconic feminist statement....and she was probably living in her fantasy blissfully unaware...really thinking that she did something by wearing it......while the rest of us are looking at her like she's one of those people who wear band t-shirts because they think it's cool but can't name a single hit song of said band let alone name one of its members.....it's quite try-hard in my opinion. Pardon my rant..but I seriously doubt she's ever even considered doing a basic Google search on the phrase. It's like when "Keep Calm and Carry On" was so trendy......heh..
Heavenly Bodies remains the best Met Gala where people actually follow the theme and slay it.
@Abigail Pierre
Hard for the designers because it looks very ethereal, very hard to craft some of those were amazing. But it's easy to follow because it's hard to go wrong or be out of theme
I actually liked the clothes from this theme too
Because it was extremely easy and blah, so I guess yeah? 🤷♂️
Caged crinolines are mid nineteenth century. They didnt have them in the 17th century and the girls were not wearing them all through the 1800s. 1800s was after the seventeen hundreds. The cage crinoline is a civil war era clothing not a mayflower era pilgrim clothing or revolutionary war era / colonial Williamsburg clothing item.
To clear up the history… Flappers were considered unacceptable behavior for women in the 1920s. Barbie definitely nailed the American independence theme.
totally agree
Thank You 😊
Honestly I didn’t really think about it like that, but now that you mention that I have an even deeper appreciation for her look. I mean, I’m obsessed with it as it is because it’s a plus sized look that looks incredible on her and doesn’t make her being plus sized either gimmicky or something that needs to be hidden, but with that extra layer of meaning on top, I’m now literally gonna marry that look lol
@Kezia Basaraba I see what you mean but TBH, I think that if the refrences or the massages of the look don't immediately trunslate to the viewers then it's not as good. I mean, most of these looks seemed ordinary to me. Good examples for looks who got it right are Den Levy's and Debbie Harry's, I immediately got the references and I'm not even American. Others didn't get it as right

Dixie D'Amelio is referencing Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast at Tiffany's so it does fit the theme. it's not a great dress and it's not exciting but in terms of the theme, it's there.

Too be fair, sometimes with art you have to hear the story behind it to really understand the meaning, so there could be details of the outfits that are harder to understand at first glance. I think y'all like Maluma's outfit because it's very stereotypical American (the fringe and leather jacket) but there's more to American fashion than just western wear
I watched a TikTok that interpreted Kim’s outfit to be a statement on herself and her fame. Although faceless and black, the outfit outlines her iconic curves and it’s easy to identify her and she’s a well-known American celebrity
I like that theory but why that shirt?

Devastated that you didn't go over Nikkie's look. So many elements telling a beautiful story! The traditional Dutch elements, the silhouette and color reminiscent of the statue of liberty, The crown of silk flowers referencing Marsha P. Johnson, and them trailing off into the drapery as if swept away in the currents of the Hudson. It's such a complete story starting with early settlers, the country's fight for independence, and this fight continuing even to this day! Very impressed with Nikkie and Edwin.
Just googled it - OMG 😍 such a beautiful look with a lot of background!!
The sash with Marsha’s token response when someone asked what the P in her name meant - Pay It No Mind 🥲🤍

I'd love to hear what you have to say about Lewis Hamilton's Met Gala outfit. I don't know if you've heard of him but he's the most successful formula 1 racing driver right now and also has a huge interest in fashion. I love motorsports and fashion so I really respect Lewis for using grand prix tracks as his own personal catwalk, even though a lot of F1 fans make fun of him for it relentlessly because the sport is very male-dominated and most people don't care about fashion. I haven't heard a lot of people talking about his outfit at the gala so I'd love to hear your thoughts. He also bought and entire table and invited four lesser-known young black designers as his guests, which I think is pretty amazing since the Met Gala is often so exclusive and smaller designers don't have the ability to get their names out there.
I admire Hamilton greatly for what he’s trying to do for diversity in the racing and fashion industry but his Met Gala outfit was… not American. You can’t just stick a wedding train to a pant leg and call it “American.” (His outfits on track are much more interesting imo)
Hello. I am happy I'm not the only F1 and fashion fan here. Also, I didn't know that Lewis did that for smaller designers. I can commend him for that. I would have loved a tire reference for his outfit. Give us Indianapolis Grand Prix in a fashion x racing crossover! Or maybe like a reference to America's automotive history in general? Would have been really cool.
Grimes' outfit was actually a reference to the American Scifi Dune, the new movie of which one of the co-hosts of the Met Gala is starring in. And her sword was literally made out of melted guns which is American as hell. So yeah she actually was totally in theme, just maybe a little obscure.
I also heard the sword was a commentary on gun control, which is cool too ? either way, I really liked the look
@@madelinemcallan6184 Considering that type of gun it was made from that makes sense!

“It’s not red, white and blue with stars, so it’s not really following the theme” - this video in a nutshell.
Grimes dress is titled "Bene Gesserit" and is a reference to an American dystopian novel, Dune by Frank Herbert. Its not obvious, but it is pretty cool when you know some back story.
Dune is known more for being first and foremost a science fiction novel with little regard for America or its history so it literally makes even less sense how Grimes dress is related to the theme
@@victoriarosa1762 dune is like the mother of American sci-fi novels. it came before star trek. before star wars. before most modern forms of science fiction. who is referencing an American designer any different to an American novel? also dune is full of themes of religion, freedom, and violence. She was making a statement of America’s culture diversity and it not just being a white patriotic country like everyone thinks it is…. it’s actually built on everybody else’s culture. Sure it can look like a “bit much” to the eye but the meaning behind does actually have references to American culture.

I feel like Kim’s look is a commentary on media and society glorifying bodies, no face, no personality, essentially interchangeable flesh that can be copied and pasted ad nauseam. Kim K definitely slammed it for me. Her whole body and face are covered head to toe, yet you see the shape of the person and instantly know it’s her. While I’m not an American, I got a lot of references to American pop-culture from Lil Nas X’s ensembles. First Liberace, then C-3PO in Montero kinda, then a bodycon Elvis Presley reference (notice the patterns of the beading). All three of those characters are notably coded as queer/gay (note I said “characters” and “coded”, I don’t care to speculate on real people’s private identities, nor is it relevant - also C-3PO is a bucket) and the conversation of gaudy extravagance = perversion or deviancy by way of sexuality, and how harmful that stereotype is to the gay community, is one that has come up in queer- and gender studies for decades. The pieces are all golden and embellished and, with the exception of Liberace, almost needlessly sexualized - just like how the US is often seen from our perspectives as outsiders. I get it’s not American fashion- or history references, but Lil Nas X and Versace spoke pretty loudly on American popular culture to me. Am I reaching here?? I definitely could be, but I also made the Liberace and Elvis connections right away as I saw them. Please let me know if I’m completely off-base.
