Yeah Idc if she's head of vogue, if she doesn't want to be on theme than maybe just don't walk the red carpet, and let someone else better represent for vogue what the exact theme is.
It’s honestly upsetting that people don’t want to follow the theme at the Met. It’s an excuse for people to dress up and be creative but they refuse to do that which is so ironic because they work in a creative field. But atleast it gives us all meme material and we all collective laugh.
I take it as an intelligence test. Are you able to understand and execute the exignment or not? I think people that repeatedly don't follow the theme need to do a sit-out for somebody who will come to slay.
Yess - it’s also literally a fundraising event for the Mets costumes with iconic t h e m e s. And they’re serving a snap back for a costume fundraiser?? Why
It's not a Halloween party theme, it's not to be meant a literal costume, it's fashion, and it's a gala. If you want guidance on this just look at the host - Anna Wintour. I'm actually disappointed in this video review, I feel he misunderstood the intent of the theme.
The sad thing is: Kim could absolutely rock a victorian silhouette without much effort. She's allready familiar with wearing a corset and it would be refreshing to see her wear a headpiece/faschinator. This choice was just wrong on so many levels.
The choice was definitely just to name drop Marilyn Monroe and that was about it lol Edit: I also just cannot get over the fit. The way she's posed with her knee forward in that picture? It's so unflattering
Kim really thought people would care about Marilyn’s dress. I saw the dress I said “ok.” Then I heard the story behind the dress, and said “ok.” Like idk personally I really don’t care who’s dress it was and Marilyn wasn’t that much of an impact to me.
@@David.124 to be fair Marylin is ONLY an impact for like Gen X and Baby Boomer. Millennials and Gen Z are too young. Sure we can google her and stuff but it’s not the same as being alive in her time
Seriously! Like everyone has been talking about the guilded age show, or Bridgerton, pride and prejudice, peaky blinders are all shows everyone could have drawn inspiration and they just gave up 😩 I swear everyday I wish I could dress like a Victorian woman because that fashion was absolutely incredible and these people get the opportunity to wear couture garments made for them in that style and they just chose not to 😭
@samantha ssmith hmm idk, somewhat, the silhouette of the 2021 gown is definitely more of the slim victorian dress than the one she wore for sure, if styled right it definitely could have worked I see what your saying. The 2022 was pretty but obviously not in style
The amount of people that went for BLACK! Like not even grey, or like dimensions of black. This was a period when colours absolutely ruled and synthetics were really developing.... just so many missed opportunities
i was literally so confused watching all the black outfits roll out like... are we forgetting that black was a mourning color back then? give us COLOR! PATTERNS!
why is everyone talking about KIM'S DRESS and no one is talking about the NECKLACE WORN BY EMMA CHAMBERLIN WHICH WAS FROM INDIA and is a PIECE OF HISTORY which was once owned by MAHARAJA OF PATIALA and went missing and suddenly found 32 years later in an auction. THE NECKLACE LITERALLY DEFINED GILDED GLAMOUR. IT IS AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF HISTORY WHICH SHOULDN'T BE WORN.
I guess it's just because more ppl who are experts in dress history etc are talking about the fashion choices at met Gala. Not many jewellery historians I suppose? That is truly awful though and she should be receiving the same backfire
It’s so cool how a lot of people who are “newer” to the scene, like Bad Bunny or Lizzo, even Billie and more, show up in better outfits than people who have been in the event over and over again. Especially Anna Wintour! The ONE red carpet event where you can go absolutely nuts with your look and you just show up with an underwhelming dress? God the rich annoy me.

If you’re gonna be rich and have an unnecessary amount of money at least do it right yk. Show off that only you can buy these crazy detailed opulent looks but no. They show up in lazy dresses and outfits that I could easily recreate at home 😐like be obnoxious in the right way
Petition to have every designer submit their MET Gala designs/looks to the MET beforehand… It’s exhausting not having almost anyone on theme every year.
I’m sure it’s hard considering there are high star celebs like Kim K showing to the event. And imagine rejecting one of these celebrities. They probably would have a hissy fit
Honestly if I ran the event if you couldn't even be bothered trying for the theme, you'd not get a second invitation. There are more than enough people that would love to go and that would look amazing, put in the effort and have the money to pay for a ticket.
The Marilyn dress was not even correct to the skin tone like it was for Marilyn. It was Marilyn’s skin color, made to be a nude moment like the Britney crystal body suit. It was an awful idea lending her the dress and that dress will never be the same. It was more than likely stretched in areas and the crystals are probably not the same either. She ruined a part of history for her own ego. If anything that was the most guilded age part about her look.
Exactly she nailed the theme perfectly just not in the way she was supposed to! 😆😭 It's so hilariously sad. I feel like we're still living in The Guilded Age after hearing what she did.
The dress was damaged , they release photos that around the zipper the clasps were damaged , so yeah , she ruined a part of history for a a stupid reason AND damaged it
A part of history? A celebrity who was likely having an affair with a president wore this dress to seduce said president... that's a part of history Americans are keen to protect?
One of the main points of Marilyn's dress was that it was made for her and her alone. Also because of that, it matched her skintone and stuck to her body perfectly.
Yes and Kim had her moment like this already and did it custom and therefore it was better suited for her. That look was everything. I believe was it Mugler who gave her that teardrop crystal wet look? This looked horrible lol
Yes but even on Marilyn she had to be sewed on it for it to fit her… Kim mostly just lost weight but since she’s much bigger than Marilyn there was no way it perfectly fit without at least breaking off the rhinestones or ripping it
It’s sacrilege for KK to have the chutzpah to think that she should dare to wear THAT dress, ever, for any reason? Definitely no. Why sacrilege? Well, there are those of us who have elevated Marilyn to goddess status. She is more of the quintessence than even the Statue of Liberty. Plus, THAT dress was not only made just for her, for her to wear while singing Happy Birthday to President JFK. Would KK ever have the iconic status to appear for such an occasion? No. THAT dress not only was custom made for Marilyn, but it had to be sewn onto her body. If anything the level ostentatious excess that KK has symbolized in presuming to wear THAT dress for a gaudy, trashy occasion, not because the Met is trashy, but because so many of the invited guests are indeed trashy. KK’s purportedly using her private jet to fly the gown and its entourage to various places around the country in preparation for the event quite simply just underscores just how differently the billionaire class live than the rest of us, or CAN live, just because they’re so smart, so rich, so entitled. So bah humbug to KK and her presumptions and to the bulk of the gala’s invitees. That was and still is Marilyn’s dress, so why did it have to be violated by having it to be on KK’s body. Would that we could wind the clock back and undo even the possibility that such a thing could ever happen.
It is very pretty she did say tho that the main dress part (not the draped skirt but the actual dress) is inspired by the empire state building which was built 30 years after the gilded Age.....
because the dress was made for Marilyn and not for Kim who loves tan, who has different body shape and hairstyle. Kim's curves are different - she tried to pose like Marilyn and all of her poses seem harsh, very 'geometrical', while Marilyn looks soft, almost angelic like. And I will never believe that Kim was able to fit in that dress even if she lost a lot of weight for it - that why ugly white coat was there. To hide the fact that they weren't able to close the zipper.
the minute I heard she was allegedly going to the Met Gala in Marilyn's dress, I immediately said, "she can't wear that, she won't fit in it. her hips are too big for it. " also, Priceless American Icon Artifact! Hello? No amount of money Kim shells out should let her wear the dress!
The thing that makes the dress was 1) that it fits Marilyn's skin and it looks nude, and 2) the classic SILHOUETTE. Silhouette. You can make dresses with ANY type of fabric, but if you get the silhouette right, it can pass as being "historically inspired". For example, Billie's. Her dress is not historically accurate fabric wise, but because her silhouette is great, it looks distinctively gilded age. Kim does not has Marilyn's undergarments. The silhouette and color is far off, to the point that it loses its initial purpose and charm.
I've got to say, as a typical heterosexual 36 years old man who lives in Florida and all that entails, I have no idea how I got this far down the rabbit hole but I'm here for it. Watched the whole 45 min. 10/10 would watch again. Not only are you extremely knowledgeable but also very articulate in why things were or weren't on theme. Banger critique. Even though my opinion counts for absolutely nothing I think this was really great and the fact that it was done at the end of what I'm assuming was a very long day speaks volumes of the work ethic. Thank you for this very brief look into a world I know absolutely nothing about!
I just can't imagine being invited to what is basically the most high-brow costume party in the U.S. and NOT showing up on-theme. I can't with these people anymore lmao
Hey! Did you know God is three in one!? The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit! Bless them! Jesus died for our sins, rose from the dead, and gives salvation to everyone who believes in him and follows his commandants! Have a blessed day, everyone!!! ❤
The amount of comments asking "why did Kim wear Marilyn's dress?" is exactly why Kim wore Marilyn's dress. Of course she saw it didn't look amazing on her (she knows what works for her like no one else) but she knew this would keep people talking for weeks. The Kardashians live by the moto "bad publicity is still good publicity" and this is how they got so famous. Edit: I think she shouldn't have worn an historical piece too. This is what can happen when you have these pieces at private collections, like the Believe It Or Not Museum. This dress should be in possession of a public museum or an institution ruled by a board or council, like the Metropolitan itself.
I'm not hating but she didn't look good and her hair pulled back it just didn't look good. It was a more for me seeing right thru all them kards. With plastic surgery and a good scam anyone can make it in Hollywood.
I’m 80, an elder fashionista, and a devoted fan of yours. It’s such a relief to hear critique from one who knows what fashion history is about. You soothe my elder brain and eyes more than you know! Keep being as true as you are!
Ashton Sanders totally nailed the theme! His outfit is based on the Buffalo soldier uniform, an all-black regiment in the 1870's (aka the Gilded Age, but on the west coast!) In addition to the corsetry, the lovely colors, and all over great design, it fit the theme more than almost anyone else!
Oh YES! I thought his look was so familiar for some reason and that's why. I've just never seen them in their uniforms in a colored photo before but still, I just kept thinking his uniform looked so familiar...thank you for clarifying for us all what exactly that uniform is. That was a great idea, and a great part of Guilded Age history to highlight. Well, they were soldiers in the 1800s fighting Native American tribes for the US government's distubing idea of Manifest Destiny, so it's not a "great" part of history, but more like a very important part of history. The Native American tribes they were fighting were the most skilled fighters. Apache, Comanche, etc. The Comanche were arguably the best cavalry fighters to ever, ever exist. Fighting them alone would have been...let's just say, you'd send your very best. I expect they did considering the Comanches eventually lost the Indian wars. Plus the Buffalo Soldiers are considered the first Park Rangers. Should be brought into the history books more often. The only way I ever learned about them was by listening to Bob Marley. 🙄 "American Plains Indians who fought against these soldiers referred to the black cavalry troops as "buffalo soldiers" because of their dark, curly hair, which resembled a buffalo's coat and because of their fierce nature of fighting. The nickname soon became synonymous with all African-American regiments formed in 1866." -nps dot gov
Coming back to this comment to add that the choice of fabric is also genius- denim had a big boom in the 1870's, because it was durable and easier to produce with new technological advantages. It was also cheap, but that's because of unfair prices paid to share croppers for their cotton. There's so many layers to this design and it deserves to be praised 🔥
im disappointed by the lack of hats! the hats in the gilded age were so fun SUCH a missed opportunity, glad a few of the men actually wore the top hats tho they look great
Kim fell in my eyes big time: she wanted this dress just for the sake of flexing on her money and clout: it didn’t fit her right, the color didn’t look right on her tan, it was NOT on theme and most importantly no one should have ever worn this piece of history after Marilyn. Periodt.
She also made the dress look so basic with that white thing and the hair and the makeup it was just terrible and no I don’t care what everyone says she isn’t the modern day Marilyn Monroe that’s like saying Shawn Mendes is the modern Michael Jackson
Ashton Sanders was referencing black Civil War soldiers, which definitely fell within the Gilded Age years. If you look up the uniforms, the color, fit, and proportions were spot-on. In a sea of so many boring vanilla rich white people, this was incredibly pointed and striking. The only thing he wasn't wearing was the shape of hat during that time. And obviously, no weapon or horse.
Glad to see someone got here first! Understandable that he didn't get the reference though, since this is an immediate reaction before he had the chance to do much research. I guess it's hard to join the dots just by looking because union soldiers wore blue but not denim, and the cut looks almost Napoleonic to me. I do love it though.
Agreed he missed the reference. However, the Buffalo Riders of the Civil War occurred before the Gilded Age. Civil War clothes would have been considered “old timey” to someone of the Gilded Age. For example hoop skirts vs bustle skirts. So in all he was still correct by noting it wasn’t exactly influenced by the Gilded Age since they were two different time periods. It was still a nice and thoughtful attempt in all though.
@@sweetsnejinka9411 actually the were formed September 21st 1866. The guided age began in the 1870s. Seeing the years are so close fashion wear for African American men definitely would have used those designs in there fashion
Kim likes attention, but it is disgusting that she has chosen this way to bring herself into the limelight. She has completely ruined the history of the dress just by putting it on her body. Shame on Ripley's for allowing this to happen. I agree with you this does not look good on her either.
Kim really thought people would care about Marilyn’s dress. I saw the dress I said “ok.” Then I heard the story behind the dress, and said “ok.” Like idk personally I really don’t care who’s dress it was and Marilyn wasn’t that much of an impact to me.
@Andrew Murray this is the perfect example of look but don't touch. She couldn't even get the zipper up and had to go bare assed using the fur to cover the back opening. Just so unnecessary and sad.
"Completely different skintone" -- thank you. That's what I keep saying. The point of the dress was that Marilyn was supposed to look naked and glistening to the audiance. Kim wearing it is like she's smothered herself in foundation several shades too light for her. Why not pay hommage? Have the dress remade in her own skintone and do the Marilyn hair and make-up, but make it Kim Kardashian.
@@justshalicious6283 i don't think it's money. It's about Kim feeling very important. The fact that Marilyn is connected to it is what it gives it it's status. Making a new one wouldn't have that affect.
I know. I just don't get it. This is the met gala. A party to go over the edge with. A night to go "extra". And I don't fully blame the celebrity. The stylists that pulled these outfits to begin with should be fired. Some of these people looked like they were going out for drinks in a dive bar.
The point of Marilyn’s dress was to look like she wasn’t wearing anything but crystals. That’s why it was also shocking for the event and era. Also the shape of the bust, created by the bullet bra helped to give the illusion of pointy n;pples, emphasizing the “nakedness” and giving a very 50’s silhouette. That’s why Kim wearing the dress is also atrocious… It’s not the right silhouette, the dress doesn’t match her skin tone, therefore she doesn’t look almost nude. The makeup and the hair didn’t help at all EDIT: Looking at pics and comments, I came to the realization that she wasn’t wearing ANY undergarments. Which is also important bc Kim is obviously wearing bra and spandex
Not too mention on Kim it looked like every other "casual" look of her - beige, tight, lycra-ish. She wears that style everyday, why would she go dress the for the Met Gala? Ugly, boring and horrifying treatment of historic garment
Idk why Kim would bleach her hair just to tie it back so tightly. Every lady knows a tight ponytail for a photo will make you look bald/like an alien. When I first saw pictures I legit thought she shaved her head until I zoomed in and really examined. How was that her styling choice to compliment this dress? She looked bald in sparkly skims.
Ashton Sanders’ look was paying homage to the Buffalo Soldiers, a regiment of African American soldiers that fought and protected during that era. If you look up pictures, it’s actually pretty brilliantly done.
Came here to say the same thing. So many celebrities made no effort and Luke going on and on about how its off theme and he's in the know....was embrassing. He's very knowledgeable and I like his opinions but that was a miss.
ashton’s outfit was actually inspired by the uniforms worn by the buffalo soldiers, which was an African American regiment in the civil war ! although historically it was technically slightly before the gilded age started, i personally think it was a serve
I wrote mine before I read other comments... Thank you so much for pointing that out. I think that when someone is doing a " reacting to" video, should inform him/herself and do the research on the theme he/she is taking about. It's not that difficult, especially with having access to so much information from the internet. Even I knew that, and I don't live even near USA, nor on the same continen! But if I would do something like this, I would make sure to research everything that I could find about the theme I'm covering in the video.
Bella’s look is actually supposed to be a reference to pr*stitution of the time since it was a huge thing in NY during that time period. It’s all supposed to be showy and exposed, that’s why the bonding on corset is seen and the lace is there. From the hair to the outfit, her look is a modernized take on the look of pr*stitutes during the Gilded Age.
Interesting that you mention that. When I first saw it, I thought she looked like a prostitute (not in an offensive way, but more of a prostitute of that old age.)
I mean that’s cool and all but wearing a revealing black corset just doesn’t mean anything to that era. It sounds like she is just feeding into a stereotype of sex workers lol.
Poor Marilyn. We need to stop using everything about her as a way to reference modern celebrities. She was a human person not just an image to use to boost one's ego or reference one's own celebrity.
Marilyn deserves so much better. That dress is a literally artifact, I cannot imagine anyone else wear Marilyn’s dress, especially since is was specifically crafted for her. It’s not even about Kim K, I can’t even support celebs that I love wearing that. 😬
@@ldr11233 “like she’s the worst human being in the world” and if we do feel like she is?? She’s done terrible things to the black community (as well as other people) and still continues to do so. Also her helping convicted people doesn’t erase the things she’s done??
@@ldr11233 she literally lost 16 pounds to fit in the dress and acts like it’s something to be proud of. promoting dirsordered eating doesn’t make her sound like the best person in the world. marilyn would never.
Billie Eilish is not getting the credit she deserves for being the most on point with the theme! From the color palette to the fit, she hit every mark of guilded age fashion.
So many people in the comments saying that kim’s dress was perfect for last year’s met: the point is that this dress shouldn’t be worn by anyone ever again, because it is literally a piece of US history and CUSTOM MADE to fit Marylin. It’s not just a typical vintage archival gown that you borrow for 5 mins of flexing at the met.
What a defilement of Marilyn's legacy. You can imagine how delicate that vintage fabric is, and to have it desecrated by a no talent is abominable. Shame on all involved.
Yes, is so disgusting to put a piece of history at risk like that. Especially the fact she had to squeeze into it and tye it shut 😬 they said they would not alter it but they were okay with that?
I mean I literally study design and fashion history, there's a lot of internalised misogyny coming from women who think Kim shouldn't wear this dress, they are both women destroyed by the media - unfortunately, one survived and one did not. I think people put Marilyn on too much of a pedestal, she didn't enjoy being Marilyn and was often forgotten as Norma Jean, she wouldn't of enjoyed this hierarchy of who is allowed and not allowed to wear something because of how the public perceive them, given she was labelled as the other woman, mistress etc. for a long time.
Honestly, it looks like people got "The Gilded Age" confused with "The Golden Age of Hollywood". If you look at the outfits with that in mind, a lot more people are at least close to being on theme.
Yes!! But the confusion could've been so easily prevented with just a quick little google search... I really can't believe they all go to this event without understanding the theme
You lost me on Kourtney Kardashion’s look… I thought it was ugliest dress I’ve seen l The “skirt” looked like she was wearing some kind of weird body control slip and the black skirt fell apart and slipped down!
Thank you for saying everything I felt about Kim K in Marilyn's dress. I genuinely have nothing against Kim K, but the dress was magic on Marilyn and looked basic on Kim. Completely agree that the dress did nothing for her skin tone, was styled horribly, and didn't fit her right. People need to be careful about stepping into an icon's shoes - 9 times out of the 10, the original was better.
My exact same thoughts I never had anything to say about Kim Kardashian I don't even follow her like that but her wearing Marilyn's dress was just a disservice, you just can't recreated that iconic moment..... Also like Luke say you could ruin the dress with the age it has, I can't even 😫😫😫😫
What's more baffling about this Kim situation is that she basically already had her "Naked-looking Dress for a Sex Icon with Rhinestones" updated-Marilyn Met Gala moment two years ago, with the genuinely awesome “Dripping wet” Mugler look everybody remembers still. Why on Earth she'd do something like this now; the dress looks nothing like it should on her, there's no "she ain't wearing nothing but diamonds, it's so sheer, and matching the color of her skin so well, and body-hugging"-effect here, no clever twist, NO NOTHING but disrespect and tonedefness. And it's not on theme, so why?
that mugler outfit was more of an homage than wearing the actual dress. which really needs to stay in conservation and honestly im shocked she was allowed to wear it
@@caloucalai because ripley believe it or not is the people that bought it and let her wear it idk why it was even sold to them it’s a tourist gimmicky museum that obviously doesn’t have any respect to historical items
The Marilyn dress situation just got progressively worse the more we found out. It didn't fit, so she had to wear the cheap fur. She had a replica made, so why even bother wearing the original? And then she wore another Marilyn dress and damaged two in one night. Nothing about her look was on theme at all. And Kourtney on the red carpet just admitted to not paying any attention to the theme. All that money and no cares given.
I know. I feel like Luke gave Kourtney a pass bc she was wearing Thom Browne (whom he heavily supports) & matched with her husband. It may have been a Thom Browne ensemble, but I don't believe it was flattering at all, as Kourtney imo is too petite for that type of fit. And also simply was NOT on theme.
Can we also give a huge shoutout to HauteLeMode for delivering this serious, in-depth critic less than a DAY after the Met Gala? That's commitment right there.
I thought Blake Lively absolutely served. She looked stunning, it played into the theme, AND she gave us the drama with the dress transformation. The coppery gold tones of the dress also kind of played into the "gilded" interpretation of the theme.. Loved it!

And, seeing the statue of liberty, the idea of the oxidation of copper!
So you're telling me that every celebrity had a pass to make their rear end look as huge as possible and mostly everyone took a pass on it… That kind of blows my mind!
Right?? I would have even been happy w/ a comical take on the bustle. Like... A cartoonish canvas balloon butt that eventually deflates into a weird quasi-train or back of a tail coat. Maybe that would be more "gilded camp" than glamour, but... SOMETHING. USE THE THEME.
Marilyn wasn’t wearing undergarments with the dress, it looked painted on and it was iconic among other things because she almost looked naked in it. KimK is wearing what looks like full spanx or some sort of corset. She looks like she dressed up like Marilyn for an expensive Halloween party. And I agree THE dress shouldn’t have left the mannequin at the museum. It’s a piece of history. Oh, and it definitely doesn’t reference the theme of the night.
Marlyn was very much wearing undergarments. Did you not notice the pointy boobs of the bullet bra? Or the obvious corset? Kim isn’t wearing period accurate undergarments that’s why it looks strange.
Totally agree!! When I saw pictures of Marilyn wearing that dress it looked like her second skin(if that makes sense) with diamonds around it. And also I don’t get the purpose of wearing it in Met Gala with the theme? Like why? What’s the connection? I just don’t understand. I don’t hate Kim but I just don’t get the connection of wearing this.
@@jen.m.3781 actually she wasn’t wearing a bra. The “pointiness” is the shape of her natural boobs, unsupported or covered by a bra. You can compare it with images from the time and see they look nothing like the “pointiness” of the bras. In any case Kim doesn’t only have the wrong body shape to be wearing that same dress for the same effect, but especially the wrong skin tone. One of the strengths of the dress on Marilyn was that it was so close to her skin tone it looked like she had just sprinkled diamonds on. Kim should have worn a new dress in a toastier shade to create the same effect.
As someone who has studied and works in Architecture (And visited a good amount of Gilded Age mansions/architecture) I think I buy Blake’s heavy embroidery. Gilding with gold as well as other precious/ newly discovered metals was very common. Additionally intricate moldings in various stones (including colored marble etc) or wood were a staple of elite Golden age architecture. Frescos, relief sculpture, and mosaic murals were all used to further emphasize opulence and style. Conceptually, I would say that those fine architectural details are very analogous to excessive embroidery in fashion. Personally I loved it.
I thought it was a very beautiful dress, however, the pattern on the dress itself was art deco, (1920-30s), so was not part of the Gilded Age. I'm no expert on architecture or fashion, tho.
She explained in her vogue video that she was inspired by the architecture of New York City, which had its hay day in the Gilded age. For me, eveb though it was art deco it was a pass for the sheer extravagance and for paying homage to a city that thrived in the age
Couldn't agree more! The fact the Met Costume Institute's remit is the preservation of historic garments makes this doubly wrong - I would certainly hope that they felt embarrassed by this shameful attempt to re-appropriate this dress' iconography at the sake of its true conservation. It's obvious the dress' new owners (Ripley's) are not invested in its preservation, rather than making a buck out of their commercial exhibitions.

Maybe unpopular opinion: I don’t care that Kylie’s friend designed the dress. Yes, the dress is super creative and full of significance for Kylie and she’s such a great friend for honoring his legacy by wearing it, but this is literally the Met Gala. With a very specific theme. She could have picked any other high-class red carpet to present this look, but she decided to wear it to the met gala knowing that it would be picked apart by critics because it clearing isn’t on theme. It’s a shame to her friend’s legacy because it truly is an interesting and thought provoking look, but now it will forever be known as the off-theme Kylie look :/
I never thought of it quite like that. But you're right. Poor Virgil. Kylie is really good at making other people & events about herself, and wearing that gown was no different.
Yup that’s factual, that’s the reason the dress could not be zippered up on Kim. That’s why she wore the white stole to cover up the back. I also totally agree that it didn’t look good with her skin tone and the hair needed to styled like Marilyn if she’s trying to emulate the look.
@@moonybay38 Exactly the dress was too tight for Kim and it did to suit her at all, she missed an opportunity to do something cool, unique and original
@@taybug77 sure the heck didn’t.. l watched the vogue’s coverage of her getting in the dress, it took 3 people to put it on, (they had gloves on) go figure because she’s already sweating in the dress. They could not get it over her derrière. So they left it open because they feared ripping the dress.
you're totally right, and like she proves and even a young age, it's literally not THAT hard to kill a theme, you can stay in your style, and even be simple (like last year) and still KILL IT, as long as its on theme it goes further in my book than just a pretty dress. (Imo)
I don’t actually like her dress as much but I do appreciate that it looks interesting! It’s just cool and different even though I wouldn’t have chosen the Mint green 😬
@@valeriealessia6618 I mean I agree, I’m not in love with the dress. But I’m moreso giving her credit for following the theme when few people even did. I guess I think about her peers like Kendall Jenner and other young ladies whose first met gala looks weren’t even on theme. Billie just clearly puts in effort makes it work.
@samantha ssmith I am aware. When I say "Billie Eilish" or "Kendall Jenner," I refer to them and the team that are tasked with making the look come together. So Kendall Jenner and her team, Billie Eilish and her team. Celebrities are essentially a business run by many people and the business's name is their own name. And it took a team to put it together. And so far the Billie Eilish team is winning. I do think though that it was Kim Kardashian's idea to wear the Marilyn dress for no reason. And even if it wasn't her idea, she had the power to say no.
Ashton Sanders looked amazing and I wish people would do some research into the inspiration for his outfit (The Buffalo Soldiers) because its actually really expertly on theme
Luke’s absolutely right - Marilyn Monroe’s dress should be in an archive, not on Kim Kardashian. Whoever let that happened should be sacked. It just seems like a power play on Kim’s part. Hey, everyone! Look what I can do with my money and power! 🤮
I had heard that she did not wear the dress to the event, but a replica. Still a pointless power play, but I wanted to give that big of reassurance re: the actual dress.
Ashton Sanders's outfit actually hit the Gilded Age theme pretty accurately. See, we don't call the Gilded Age "golden" for a reason. It's gold /covered/, not made of gold. It seems shiny and glamorous on the outside, but below the surface, it is anything but. The Gilded Age was the era where monopolies like Standard Oil flourished at the expense of the working class, and was rife with the bloodshed of the Civil War. I bring this up because Sanders deliberately wore that suit as an homage to the Buffalo Soldiers, an all-Black cavalry that was established in 1866 (well within the bounds of the time period) to fight in the Civil War. As a black man, he would not have gotten to enjoy the luxurious lifestyle of the Astors or the Vanderbilts. Instead, he would likely be on the battlefield fighting for his right to exist or suffering under the extreme conditions of the workforce. The suit itself is not made to be an exact replica, but to capture the essence of the uniforms worn by the Buffalo Soldiers. It still, however, carries a similar silhouette and incorporates the motif of the blue and gold heralding in a way that is reminiscent, but not 100% historically accurate to the actual clothing the regiments donned as they rode or marched into battle.
Thank you for this information. I thought you myself throughout this video that it's possible that some of the outfits worn by POC may be referencing an experience that isn't the typical curriculum when it comes to historic fashion.
Also, In my opinion Kim should not have worn the Marilyn dress, even if it was just for the steps and then changed. I don’t care how famous you are, that dress should have stayed in the glass case. It also didn’t match the theme…
It's also funny because Marilyn didn't come from a privileged background so it makes it even weirder. She had alot of issues. Also should have kept the marylin hair and left it black. Who even greenlit the look? That's what I want to know. Kim always looks amazing every year.
The value must’ve dropped after being worn, especially by Kim, and it was so ill fitting. Just because you got famous off a sex tape makes you the new Marilyn? What ? How disrespectful.
I will never get over the fact that Anna Wintour consistently misses the mark. And considering the fact that she's the one who has to approve of all of the looks before the met, no wonder that there's always so many people who show up looking bad.
Kim doing this right in time for the release of the Netflix documentary talking about the exploitation of Marylin’s image and her suffering at the hands of the media/Hollywood is really just… lol
I’m an interior design student, I love Blake Lively’s dress, architecture during the gilded age had a lot of gold, brass, and copper detailings to the Corinthian column-like motifs within the interior
Blake's dress references Art Deco and Art Nouveau. The dress and the wrapping bow are so beautiful and the skirt portrays the green patina that covers copper with time. They are a stunning couple.
Billie managing to do Gilded Age without screaming conspicuous consumption was a serve. Mixing conscientious use of materials with a constrained sense of cost (looking like she cut up her mother’s gowns to make a Cinderella-ish story) was a CRAZY GOOD way to meet the theme without looking like a rich person completely disconnected from the struggles of her fans right now. Absolutely amazing!
I want to point out that Kim did change into a replica dress after going up the stairs, which I think is still so stupid. Like why not just have a replica made that actually is made for your body and your own skintone? The dress was made to look like Marilyn was naked and was covered in crystals, it was supposed to be a NUDE ILLUSION. Like…
Yes, this! The scandal at the time was the nude illusion after Marilyn removing the fur onstage but we've seen the Kardashians wearing nothing/next to nothing hundreds of times so the shock factor isn't there (plus, it's 2022)
My first thought seeing Kim K in the Marilyn Monroe dress was “holy sh*t Kim K being seen in public wearing something that ISN’T Balenciaga. Has the world ended?” My second thought was “its a replica of the Marilyn dress right…? ITS A REPLICA RIGHT?!” I completely agree that dress should not have been worn again - it’s a historic piece for display and preservation in a museum only. What’s next - someone wearing Diana’s wedding dress to the Brit awards…?
I did not even think that it was possible for it to be THE same dress, I also just thought it was a replica, like OF COURSE it is a replica, in fact even when Luke was talking about it I was like "yeah but why are you so offended by it it's a replica..." well turns out it's not and we should all be mad that someone let her wear it.
It kind of reminds me of when Bretman Rock wore the late Aaliyah's dress at the VMA's last year.... :/ It's definitely off-putting and creepy to wear a notable figure's dress just for ✨lewks✨
@@Honey-cl9oh yeah, it's super disrespectful. Clothing is considered to be one's second skin, since it's so personal. So when you take clothes from important figures, and treat it like hand-me-downs... it's desecration imo. Especially if it's of historical value
i know why Kim decided to wear that dress and i am basically giving her what she wants, but it pisses me of so much that she basically has no limits to what she will do for the sake of attention, she will disrespect and spit on everything for the sake of the public never stop talking about her and her family , and she always ALWAYS gets what she wants its really sickening
This is a BRILLIANT critique. Kim a disgrace in the Marilyn dress. Marilyn’s body could be seen in that gown: What we see with Kim is some kind of under armor. It’s a sin.
Ashton Sanders look was referencing the Buffalo Soldiers - a specifically Black male guard unit established in 1866 in Fort Leavenworth Kansas - the Gilded Age began roughly in the 1870's so I would say he was making a strong pre reference towards the theme - at the very least much closer than the majority of the Met Gala guests.
Kim wearing Marilyn’s dress is sort of offending me ngl. Wearing something so powerful and iconic and putting it on super nova fast fashion level hurts my soul…
this is the thing that hit first for me and yet haven't heard one commenter bring it up. SO TRASHY. like, literally the biggest disrespect to Jackie and her memory. my god, the Kardashians have no boundaries to how low they go.
You have allowed immigrants to feel that they can supplant you lol. She tried with Aboriginal American women (Black Americans) and now they are trying with Caucasians in American land. What’s good for the goose is good for the gander. This is chickens coming home to roost. We warned you but you mocked Aboriginal American women because you were spiteful. We know how to guard our image. Do you?
The Gilded Age theme offered an opportunity to design clothes that reflect the aesthetic of that period. They could have been so beautiful, and I don’t understand the high ugly quotient of many of them.
It's like people got stuck on the "Evening gown", "long gloves", and "opulent jewelry" notes in the memo, so they just wore a modern evening gown with gloves and some jewelry, rather than actually paying homage to the era. Some people hit it, and others were obscure but could have a pass. very few ere creative and I hate that with you.
because most of the people in the entertainment industry, particularly those pushed on the public through events like these and magazines like VOGUE and mainstream award shows, are actually normies. The industry needs puppets for its purposes, not independent, creative thinkers that are harder to control and have their own agendas.
It’s absolutely infuriating how everyone seems to understand the problem with Kim wearing Marilyn’s dress but very few people (almost exclusively poc) are pointing out the issue of Emma chamberlain wearing a stolen necklace
AT THIS POINT, The Met just needs to tell these people what to wear in its simplest form: WEAR 1800 TYPE SHIT. Ya, cause I'm so sick and tired of these celebs and designers not getting the memo.
When Kim was walking up the steps in Marilyns dress someone noticed that few of the rhinestone fell off :( so it is a historical museum piece not to be worn for exactly that reason
For the gilded age architecture (Blake's dress) this is a direct correlation to the Statue of liberty that was made out of copper and then when oxidized turned a teal shade (as copper does). The lines and cuts in the dress are very accurate to the gilded age accents in the major building in NY at the time that had those kinds of accents. Copper was used in piping and sewage back then an it was much cheaper and safer than steel, so the copper makes sense. However, as time when along copper became less popular and more expensive as it heats even more rapidly than steel or stainless steel. Blake did a fantastic job thinking outside the box, and frankly this years theme sucked as many of the years themes have sucked and I'm tired of the "hollywood glam, remember history" trope. Everyone from that era is dead and I wish we would leave them and their clothes in the damn grave. Thank you for attending my Ted Talk.
I am utterly shocked that somebody let that woman wear Marylin's dress. Other than that, there should be a petition for allowing only fashion students and people who actually know fashion and history to style those simpletons on the red carpet. Seriously. There are plenty of talented intelligent people who would kill for that job so just fire everyone and give young people a chance to show their skill and knowledge.
Michael, that would be a spectacular idea for a reality fashion show with the winners designing looks for the next MET Gala! Obviously, Luke must be a judge along with Jason Bolden and someone else.
She had an exact replica made soooo who tf cares she didnt get the original dress off the museums mannequin to wear it… people just WANT to hate these females lol
What I find disappointing about these era themes is that they always ignore more rural fashions that could be really unique with modern twists if given the right attention.
Kim has done the skintone-like dress with shiny decoration before, so what else is new 🙄 but her actually wearing The Marilyn dress is just gross , even if she wore a dupe afterwards
Also, not her confidently promoting toxic diet culture by touting how she starved herself for 3 weeks to lose 16lbs to fit into the dress, then going on how she then binged with donuts and pizza afterwards. Just gross.
I feel like the answer is pretty simple. Kim basically popularized the bbl body. which shien, fashion nova, all those types of brands took inspiration from. Those brands have made money off that body type by using models that are cut out copies of the Kardashians. Influencers that look like her also dress similar to her. We have now grown correlate that body type to cheap bodycan tight dresses sold by these companies. When we see kim in these high fashion pieces they end up looking cheap because we’ve already seen dresses that look exactly like this, only in cheaper fabrics and worn by influencers.
It’s impossible to say this without it coming across mean spirited which isnt my intention. I don’t have the time or energy to hate on people I have no connection to. The Kardashian’s exemplify the reality that there is an ocean of difference between being a brand and having style. They don’t have style. They just don’t. Not in the Fashion sense of the word, anyhow. A stylish person can wear a t shirt and jeans or sweat pants (like they live in) or a formal gown and it would all seem natural, effortless, and it would MAKE SENSE. Their own essence would embody the clothing and some kind of alchemy happens and it’s just THEM and its interesting. The Kardashian’s don’t wear their clothes, their clothes wear them and it never ever looks coherent. Even Kendall, who seems lovely, actually, and who objectively has the most fashion sense of them all, doesn’t quite have it. She mostly copies what her model friends do and, again, the clothes wear her. It just is what it is. Kim without Kanye telling her what to wear is just Kim falling back on what Paris told her to wear. And that’s kinda what seemed to have happened with this huge mistake. She reverted to Paris Hilton but she doesn’t have that true IDGAF that Paris has and it just …. was a famous dress wearing Kim Kardashian for the night against it’s will.
I love the concept behind Blake Lively's transforming dress but I just wish she leaned into Art Nouveau aesthetics instead of Art Deco aesthetics because the architectural styles she's referencing in the beadwork is about 20 years after the end of the Gilded Age, and Art Nouveau is such a fun and unique style of the period (plus, it was super popular in France and Lady Liberty comes from France!)
Proves that celebrities don't know their fashion history just want to be seen and can't follow directions. By the way thanks for your opinion on Kim wearing Marilyn's dress, I totally agree.
Pretty sure celebs get invited by designers and the designers dress them however they want. I don’t think they have a say unless maybe the select few. Tbh they’re just happy to be there lmaoo
It's also very ironic because most of these actors and actresses have starred in period dramas, specifically gilded age period dramas. As someone who looooveess period dramas and is poor, I would do literally anything to dress like it.
I just know Kim’s orange spray tan is allll over the lining of that dress. And in watching her team struggle to get her in it there’s no way the rhinestones weren’t pulled. Can we not wear historical artifacts pls
She said she did not wear body make up with Marilyn's dress and also people who own the dress are not stupid. There was a conservator to make sure the dress wont get damaged.
1. Kim couldn't fit in that dress 2. She couldn't walk in the dress 3. She had to lose weight to wear it 4. If there was a statement to be made by wearing it (since Marilyn wore it for JFK's bday) it was totally lost on me 5. The hair was atrocious (and she reminded me of Amber Rose from a distance), and lastly, 6. She was blatantly off-theme. To sum it up, Marilyn wore the dress, whereas in Kim's case the dress wore her..
The thing that bothers me about Kim wearing that dress is that I think for so many girls/women, Marilyn was and still is a body positivity icon. She had a very natural womanly shape with pointy breasts (which I think most women have, I don’t think most women have perfectly rounded breasts all the time without support), she had defined hips and a waist and stomach was soft and had bits that overlapped and created little rolls and she had a normal little bump where most women do due to their uterus. And she looks like the every woman, of course women have different body shapes but when I see Marilyn in that dress I see my own body and I think a lot of women would. Kim on the other hand, has single handedly lead a whole lot of women and young girls to have body dysmorphia and believe that they should have the body of a barbie doll and attempt to live up to the absolutely impossible standard that is Kim Kardashians body. Kims body is her body and of course she is entitled to look how she does, but she is absolutely not by any means a champion of body positivity. I mean her and her family have advertised diet teas and lollipops ffs. I just don’t think Marilyn would stand by any of that. And thats why I have such an issue with Kim wearing that dress. Kim and Marilyn are both icons in regards to their bodies but in extremely different ways, thats fine because women dont need to be carbon copies of each other, but Kim comparing herself to Marilyn in that way is an absolute joke and its insulting tbh.
I don't mean to be an asshole, but you're spreading misinformation here. Monroe was a fairly petite woman at 5''5 & 118lbs and a lot of people believe she had an eating disorder (very common for actresses). You can google her exercise routine and diet. She definitely didn't practice "intuitive eating". The "pointy breasts" are from something called the bullet bra, we have pictures of her in a bikini, her stomach was flat and she clearly used corsets (like most actresses). She did have a slight bump you're correct there, but that bump is literally just fat (which is fine) unless you're pregnant/postpartum the uterus is a very small organ, no where near large enough to cause the stomach to distend.
I am so happy to hear your take on Kim's look. I hated her wearing that dress. Marilyn deserves better. Marilyn spent her whole career having individuals discredit her talent due to her sex appeal. Then you have Kim, an actually talentless person who banks solely on her sex appeal wearing this dress... just tacky. But I guess to a Kardashian thats just called *on brand.*
I love Marilyn, but she is more like Kim than you'd guess. Marilyn was seen as very sexual and slutty for her time. She was obsessed with her looks and perfection, had a number of plastic surgeries, posed for Playboy fully naked and admitted to sleeping her way to the top. I agree that the dress shouldn't be worn though.
makes me feel bad that Marilyn's JFK birthday gown will now be associated with Kim Kardashian's name. Should've just left that gown in peace and keep its value of having been worn only by Marilyn.
It’s not even about Kim harming Marilyn’s dress, it’s the fact that why did she want to wear this dress? To fit the gilded age theme? No bc it simply doesn’t. It’s the fact that she CAN and she want to show the world that she COULD. It’s disgusting and she shouldn’t have been allowed to do so
I agree, out of all people to wear that dress. Or honestly nobody should be allowed to wear it. Now the only two people in the world who has ever worn in it is Marilyn Monroe and fucking Kim kardashian. What a joke. Way to cheapen it.
Not to mention it was made to perfectly match Marilyn's skin tone in order to almost appear invisible and Kim's skin tone took away from the illusion. But more importantly, Marilyn didn't want anyone else wearing that one dress.
Billie was my favourite "newbie" as she respected the theme AND the environment. Loved Emma Corrin as well. SJP has my vote for best dressed, once again. Her Vogue interview going through her Met Gala looks really made me appreciate the passion and intelligence she has in creating these looks.
I saw that interview and the level of respect and appreciation not only for fashion but for every single piece of clothing she wears is astonishing. Now, again, hearing the story behind this look made me think how she truly is in a league of her own when it comes to this event.
@@vivianetolomeotti3672 I watched that interview of SJP I can't say she's my favorite actress because she's not but I appreciate that she really understands what goes into the preparation and production of The Met Gala. I have a whole new respect for her for having an incredible passion for fashion and the history behind it.
Ashton’s suit was inspired by the military regiment suits just after the civil war So he totally nailed the theme…. Also why did people not wear more head pieces!!!
Glad I checked to see if someone else mentioned this. The nod to the Buffalo Soldiers was important! I think he nailed it. Figured someone would get this on the record 😉
Good GOD 😫 I HATED Kim wearing Marilyn Monroe’s iconic ‘Mr. President’ dress. I’ve never been more genuinely mad about seeing a celebrity wear a garment in my LIFE! The Kardashian’s outfits were so horrible I seriously had to unfollow all of them- I couldn’t handle them tooting their own horn talking about how beautiful and meaningful all their outfits were OMG disgusting
Anna Wintour not following her own theme was pretty hilarious
That’s a recurring theme actually
i don't get it! she could have so much fun with this.
She never does, she hasn’t served a look since late 90s
Yeah Idc if she's head of vogue, if she doesn't want to be on theme than maybe just don't walk the red carpet, and let someone else better represent for vogue what the exact theme is.
Her FOLLOWING the theme would've been a bigger shock honestly
Why
@@valeriealessia6618 Because designers are treating the met like a marketing campaign for their new collection rather than actually doing the work.
Like they have so many red carpets and events all year long to dress up and look pretty. Why not just follow the damn theme this one night 😤
It's not a Halloween party theme, it's not to be meant a literal costume, it's fashion, and it's a gala. If you want guidance on this just look at the host - Anna Wintour. I'm actually disappointed in this video review, I feel he misunderstood the intent of the theme.
Kim’s dress situation is a perfect example of ‘just because you can, doesn’t mean you should’
yes!!! exactly!!
I was so bored by that look
A message I have told my children since they were very young. They get it, some people are clueless
Someone said it looked like she made wearing That Dress look like she was wearing formal Skims, and I could agree more.
ok
The sad thing is: Kim could absolutely rock a victorian silhouette without much effort. She's allready familiar with wearing a corset and it would be refreshing to see her wear a headpiece/faschinator. This choice was just wrong on so many levels.
The choice was definitely just to name drop Marilyn Monroe and that was about it lol
Edit: I also just cannot get over the fit. The way she's posed with her knee forward in that picture? It's so unflattering
lmao "absolutely rock"... photoshop does not work in real life.
Sure we can google her and stuff but it’s not the same as being alive in her time
She’s an Armenian. Very dense slava valley girl archtype. Has no idea about culture. Just theft.
Also it was such a fun theme that could go so many ways and most people did not even TOUCH the theme… ugh
Right!! I was so upsett, Like for once they need to put work
They should turn-away anyone not dressed in theme; that'll deter any future non-compliance for sure. 😀
most years the theme is missed by most though, no?
The amount of people that went for BLACK! Like not even grey, or like dimensions of black. This was a period when colours absolutely ruled and synthetics were really developing.... just so many missed opportunities
*kendalls outfit is the exception - I LOVE
Agree, in that time period black was for mourning.
I would have liked a reference to gilded age mourning fashion. As it was a large part of dress at the time. But no they couldn't even do that.
i was literally so confused watching all the black outfits roll out like... are we forgetting that black was a mourning color back then? give us COLOR! PATTERNS!
@@nebullae it wasn't always a mourning color especially in evening dress but yes they certainly skipped the extravagant jewel tones worn by them.
Anna Wintour should just name the next met as "Shein-Theme" next year and call it a day.
I'm Laughing so hard. Because it's on point and I love this comment
@@krishniarumugam it's truth 🕴️🏼
She looked very Shein herself

no cause watch shein have some of these outfits on their website after today 💀💀
why is everyone talking about KIM'S DRESS and no one is talking about the NECKLACE WORN BY EMMA CHAMBERLIN WHICH WAS FROM INDIA and is a PIECE OF HISTORY which was once owned by MAHARAJA OF PATIALA and went missing and suddenly found 32 years later in an auction. THE NECKLACE LITERALLY DEFINED GILDED GLAMOUR. IT IS AN IMPORTANT PIECE OF HISTORY WHICH SHOULDN'T BE WORN.
omg!! what!
I don't care. I don't really care about kim not Emma.
@@agathachris9722 it's not about them, it's about the artifacts
I guess it's just because more ppl who are experts in dress history etc are talking about the fashion choices at met Gala. Not many jewellery historians I suppose? That is truly awful though and she should be receiving the same backfire
THIS IS AWFUL. Damn I didn’t knew about it!
Hey! Did you know God is three in one!? The Father, The Son, and The Holy Spirit! Bless them!

Lizzo really killed it!!! And im not a fan
Yeah or they should just get rejected at the door if they arrive off theme!
They need to give PowerPoint presentations on their looks and how they fit the theme 😂
I’m sure it’s hard considering there are high star celebs like Kim K showing to the event. And imagine rejecting one of these celebrities. They probably would have a hissy fit
@@AmyB369 I was literally thinking about this 😂 they should hire a fashion historian at the gate.
Anna herself was boring. What would they say to others
It‘s like all of these brands, stylists and celebs are purposely trying to NOT fit the theme by all means necessary 😂💀
Honestly if I ran the event if you couldn't even be bothered trying for the theme, you'd not get a second invitation. There are more than enough people that would love to go and that would look amazing, put in the effort and have the money to pay for a ticket.
Seriously, so annoying. Complete disrespect.
LMAO YOURE THAT GUY THAT GOT ROASTED TO FUCKING BITS FOR CALLING OUT FASHION WHILE LOOKING BASIC AS FUCK HAHAHAHAHAHAHAH
Tom Ford openly admitted he never follows the theme!
They are all trying to be *not like other girls*
Worst part, she went with Pete Davidson and not Kanye. K & K (Kim and Kanye) alone is a legendary name/title.
The dress was damaged , they release photos that around the zipper the clasps were damaged , so yeah , she ruined a part of history for a a stupid reason AND damaged it
Yes! Skin tone is key, Kim made it look a murky yellow as it’s already quite transparent.
Yes but even on Marilyn she had to be sewed on it for it to fit her… Kim mostly just lost weight but since she’s much bigger than Marilyn there was no way it perfectly fit without at least breaking off the rhinestones or ripping it
Plus it wasn’t golden age!
Blake's Statue of Liberty dress was fantastic. That's one Micarah Tewers needs to make.
Really hitting the theme of the gala and exhibit theme while some don't have one theme.
It was so much more than just the statute of liberty. She explained it Vogue interview
probably one of the few looks i love unfortunately
YES MY GIRL MICARAH
It is very pretty she did say tho that the main dress part (not the draped skirt but the actual dress) is inspired by the empire state building which was built 30 years after the gilded Age.....
Kim absolutely FELL. How she managed to make one of the most iconic dresses in the world look like a fucking fashion nova disaster is beyond me.
because the dress was made for Marilyn and not for Kim who loves tan, who has different body shape and hairstyle.
Oh my god thank you just cause she’s Kim k she can do whatever she wants touch Marilyn’s dress and do it badly
@@piupauf she recently had some of her butt removed so I think that played into it
The thing that makes the dress was 1) that it fits Marilyn's skin and it looks nude, and 2) the classic SILHOUETTE.
With plastic surgery and a good scam anyone can make it in Hollywood.

oh Mary 😭 you’re delightful
This is the sweetest comment I’ve ever seen on this website! 🥺
I went looking for this comment.
"American Plains Indians who fought against these soldiers referred to the black cavalry troops as "buffalo soldiers" because of their dark, curly hair, which resembled a buffalo's coat and because of their fierce nature of fighting. The nickname soon became synonymous with all African-American regiments formed in 1866." -nps dot gov
THANKYOU I came to the comments to say he's exactly on the theme and a whole lot more on theme than almost everyone!!
Coming back to this comment to add that the choice of fabric is also genius- denim had a big boom in the 1870's, because it was durable and easier to produce with new technological advantages. It was also cheap, but that's because of unfair prices paid to share croppers for their cotton. There's so many layers to this design and it deserves to be praised 🔥
im disappointed by the lack of hats! the hats in the gilded age were so fun SUCH a missed opportunity, glad a few of the men actually wore the top hats tho they look great
Very true..where were the ornate hats? Why was it so basic?
Very true
Same! I felt that could have given extra pizzazz to a lot of the looks
Yes! So many birds died in that time period to become decor for hats. I wanted to see a whole owl on someone’s head
SZA wore a hat, but he didn’t cover her. Or many of the other best-dressed folks! 🙄
Kim fell in my eyes big time: she wanted this dress just for the sake of flexing on her money and clout: it didn’t fit her right, the color didn’t look right on her tan, it was NOT on theme and most importantly no one should have ever worn this piece of history after Marilyn. Periodt.
I swear I saw her in the same dress in silver. Pretty amazing on how she makes everything so boring.
She also made the dress look so basic with that white thing and the hair and the makeup it was just terrible and no I don’t care what everyone says she isn’t the modern day Marilyn Monroe that’s like saying Shawn Mendes is the modern Michael Jackson
Totally agree! That’s why a person wears clothes not other way
She dressed better when she was with Kanye. She’s a basic girl I think people just forgot lol
Boring look, disrespectful and NOTHING to do with the theme. So, very much a Kardashian look 🤷🏽♀️
I agree that his fits the theme, but the civil war didn’t happen during the gilded age
@@czwilli no? Buffalo soldiers were 1890.
To sum it up in two words Being CHEAP!!
@@justshalicious6283 i don't think it's money. It's about Kim feeling very important. The fact that Marilyn is connected to it is what it gives it it's status. Making a new one wouldn't have that affect.

That’s why Kim wearing the dress is also atrocious…
It’s not the right silhouette, the dress doesn’t match her skin tone, therefore she doesn’t look almost nude. The makeup and the hair didn’t help at all
EDIT: Looking at pics and comments, I came to the realization that she wasn’t wearing ANY undergarments. Which is also important bc Kim is obviously wearing bra and spandex
Kim made that dress look like every other bedazzled bodycon dress. It was giving Fashionova.
Excellent points ! Undergarments matter - particularly if you are doing vintage inspired pieces .
@@va6632 yes !!!!! it’s exactly that. when i first saw the dress i thought she was wearing her own brand or something. then i realized

Wait, was that a low ponytail? I thought that she cut her hair very short XD
Ashton Sanders’ look was paying homage to the Buffalo Soldiers, a regiment of African American soldiers that fought and protected during that era. If you look up pictures, it’s actually pretty brilliantly done.

I wrote mine before I read other comments... Thank you so much for pointing that out. I think that when someone is doing a " reacting to" video, should inform him/herself and do the research on the theme he/she is taking about.

It’s so important to not only define Guilded Age fashion by what white American elites were wearing.
Bellas was really good i must say
Glorifying a prostitute because at that Met Gala …..iykyk.

I agree.
You’re all so bitter, let the women live
Yes. Maud Apatow, for example. Perfect choice for the roaring 20s but not for the Gilded Age.
@Natasha ma'am this is a met gala roast comment section
Yes!! But the confusion could've been so easily prevented with just a quick little google search... I really can't believe they all go to this event without understanding the theme

Khlorentals dress was much the same. Just Yucky... Kim wore the original for a photo op but a replica on the carpet...🤮

Kim looks like amber rose in this outfit
Not to mention they scrapped rhinestones off putting it on her.
It's baffling. Maybe she hit her head. I just hope she realises it was a huge mistake and not people being haters 🙄
That was all Kanye. I don't care for his behavior *at all* but damn did he know how to dress Kim. He's a better stylist than her.

Right?? I would have even been happy w/ a comical take on the bustle. Like... A cartoonish canvas balloon butt that eventually deflates into a weird quasi-train or back of a tail coat. Maybe that would be more "gilded camp" than glamour, but... SOMETHING. USE THE THEME.

Blake Lively was fabulous, I loved her look so much. Kim K being allowed to wear that dress is a travesty and should never have happened.
Marilyn wasn’t wearing undergarments with the dress, it looked painted on and it was iconic among other things because she almost looked naked in it.
KimK is wearing what looks like full spanx or some sort of corset. She looks like she dressed up like Marilyn for an expensive Halloween party.

She looks nothing like the original.
I hope it was a replica of the original. Kim k missed the whole point of the dress anyway The skin tone has to the same as the dress
Blake always delivers at the met.

Well done researched one. 👍🏾

@samantha ssmith it's almost 60 years old hun, it'll fall apart if not preserved
@samantha ssmith as Luke notes in this video, it’s an artifact. It should be treated as such, not being a troll just sharing my opinion
It's also funny because Marilyn didn't come from a privileged background so it makes it even weirder. She had alot of issues. Also should have kept the marylin hair and left it black. Who even greenlit the look? That's what I want to know. Kim always looks amazing every year.

It's Kim in a skin-tight dress. As usual
The AUDACITY of Kris dressing as Jackie and Kim daughter wearing Marlyns dress is wild to me.

The Gilded Age theme offered an opportunity to design clothes that reflect the aesthetic of that period. They could have been so beautiful, and I don’t understand the high ugly quotient of many of them.
This really is an ugly time in this world.
Very high quotient! Lol. I thought Billie did OK. As for the rest, ugh.....
Gilded Fashion. Not age.
because most of the people in the entertainment industry, particularly those pushed on the public through events like these and magazines like VOGUE and mainstream award shows, are actually normies. The industry needs puppets for its purposes, not independent, creative thinkers that are harder to control and have their own agendas.

Literally every word you said about Kim’s dress was on point. She shouldn’t be walking around in a historical artifact
I feel Blake's dress was more celebrating Tiffany glass design of the period than architecture. The copper / oxidation was brilliant.
Yes, that and maybe Victorian houses, stained glass, I loved the colors.
i thought the pattern of her dress had a very art deco feel, but i feel that period was also very much after the gilded age as far as its described
Maybe it was both! Didn’t someone wear a stained glass dress one year for a different theme?
To me it also seemed like a reference to famous Art Deco buildings such as the Chrysler building in NY.
@@KatieLHall-fy1hw Are you thinking of Gigi Hadid's stained glass dress in the 2018 Heavenly Bodies MET?
When Kim was walking up the steps in Marilyns dress someone noticed that few of the rhinestone fell off :( so it is a historical museum piece not to be worn for exactly that reason
Comparing Marilyn dress to carrying the Mona Lisa around is a *perfect* analogy.
Seriously. There are plenty of talented intelligent people who would kill for that job so just fire everyone and give young people a chance to show their skill and knowledge.

kim kardashian ability to make anything that she wears look like it came from fashion nova or shein is outstanding and should be studied
IM DEAD 💀 💀💀

@@jennifercaballero4659 i disagree she looked stunning in that mugler dress in the camp met gala

People need to stop looking to celebs to be perfect role models.
