Described as a "cathedral of the senses". I can't tell you how many times I have watched the trailer because it lives up to the description. A Hidden Life got a 10 minute standing ovation at Cannes in 2019. August Diehl is a huge talent who works with the best directors in the world, yet hes such a kind and gracious gentleman based on the interviews. Valerie Pachner has the most beautiful and striking eyes I have ever seen and I bet you anything Malicks camera loved them. All that and I haven't seen it yet because I have to wait till its on bluray. I am so looking forward to that. Thanks for sharing SearchlightPictures

It's interesting that the film was cast with German actors but they went with English. There's a pretty significant amount of dialogue in German though, which wasn't subtitled. I wonder what Malick's thinking was behind that decision.

The new world is a beautiful film. Malick is another level as a filmmaker. His movies have a sense of realness, depth and soul to them. I can’t explain what it is. It’s like he draws you into really feeling what the characters are feeling and doing. Almost like you are not watching a movie at all. The thin red line is my favorite by him. The opening of that film is so beautiful and so tragic at the same time. And there’s still 2 1/2 hours to go. Amazing filmmaker.

I left the Theater, like many others, in silence, as though I had experienced a moment in Cinema. The Only other time I have felt that way after watching a movie, was Schindler's List. a Hidden Life is stunning, with breathtaking scenery; it is an eternal story of good versus evil and the overwhelming power of Love to endure the greatest of all sufferings, even death, to reach beyond and into another dimension. Amazing! Brilliant! Captivating! Spectacular! Few words can capture its powerful message. This is a Must See film by a Master...GO SEE IT. @@gregoryandrus5322 gregory we have some special awful far rightwinged people again, young people who do not celebrate our liberation but complain about the occupation which was very soft - except in the easter austrian soviet zone. America granted us the 2nd highest amount of marshall's plan. but this wealthy people rather mourn for heroes like "franz nowotny" and claim he would have defended our country so magnificently. we're talking about 25 to 30 percent of the voters and another 20+ percent who do not have a solid opinion. their party was involved to the government 2017-2019. "fortunately", a huge scandal ended this coalition. but the responsible chancellor from the middle right conservative party was voted again into office and he is very sad that this "best for austria!" collaboration failed. our chancellor said terrible things like "awful pictures are needed to prevent us from more refugees". But unfortunately you hear the same words from Australia! Donald trump has strongly favored this peoples mood, who said the same things. Austrian rightwinged people listen carefully and it make them feel motivated. Of course there is the big problem that every folks in the world celebrates its "heroes". Other countries in west and east would have helped us a lot if they stopped doing that. For ex. the british would have helped us a lot. "Why should we regret and they remain militarists" young people say. "they constantly congratulate themselves on being better people who don't have to question themselves" our young people claim. As a protest they react to it by recidivism their perspective on our own heinous crimes. That's ugly but it always takes two. It would have needed a second in the allies who does not celebrate his victory again and again and again. One has no expectations of Russia and China but America has promised that after 1945 we will build a better world together. A civil world of course. Instead America has established a military culture that is similar to old Prussia. The prussian military culture was the root of all evil and not hitler as an single agitating person.Prussia was a carnival of uniforms. The military became a social pillar. The rank played a major role in partner choice and career. This mentality led to "Third Reich".That is exactly what is going on in America and it serves as a convenient excuse for many people here. "You are not allowed to, because you have committed terrible crimes" it can be said. But that's not how people work, they orientate themselves on the role models of the present. However, we are talking about a high level. Austria looks after a very, very large number of refugees. They are doing very well and no costs are spared to support raped Yezidi women and other victims of torture with best (world top) therapy. There is no racist violence in Austria, literally no except in words. Of course, one shouldn't downplay the violence of the words. We have nothing to reproach ourselves for when it comes to the facts, the other 50+ percent people take care of that. But not our chancellor. Our government and its voters wants to hinder the helping people in Austria. Of course America is being criticized because the demands on our democratic leadership country are very high. Of course, we lucky ones have no right to do so. This also applies to the british who themselves suffered by the war (our criminal war and unbelievable massmurder) did their best for us in their zone (Styria). With a forgiving attitude that we didn't deserve. Excuse my english, if needed. I am happy that some Jews are coming back to vienna, reviving the strongly jewish identity of my city. Jews gave this city its former importance that shines to this day. Not only the first, second and third vienna school of psychiatry.

Stunning movie but the only thing that bothered me as a German. And i watch movies in their original language, sometimes with subs. Because of the lip-sync and authenticity.
But they filmed that movie with 95% Germans in English and dubbed it back to German. Thad made some scenes really odd. I understand why they this. But come on, it's a german/austrian story and the authenticity gets a little bit away.... I would have liked it much more if it was filmed in German and later dubbed in English.

They speak English in Austria? Funny. I didn't know that.

This is true, cultural imperialism (or marketing capitalism) of Hollywood and its imaginary-industrial-complex is an old hat, a vulgar practice to reduce foreign cultures to "background noice", that's been done since the early days of talkies. But this is Terrence Malick! A man who speaks German, who even translated Heigegger once, Heidegger who said "Language is the house of being. In its home human beings dwell." I was expecting more from him. My mistake. If you are fine wiht this, suksi sitten vittuun, saatanan saappaanuolija, perkeleen peräänantaja.

I love Malick and will see this as soon as possible, but so many of these shots feel recycled from his past films. I've always defended him from those who accuse him of treading water for the past ten years, but this clip doesn't seem to prove them wrong. Also, his themes of searching for answers, looking to God, etc. appear to be far more literal here. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I'm cautiously optimistic this time around.

Watching this for 3 hours felt like a torture. Outstanding cinematography, yes, but wasted on the glorification of utterly stupid hero character. As a family man, the decision making process of this guy is just unbelievable, complete oposite of what humans should glorify or romantize. So wrong, on so many levels.

Oh great, another Malick opus the more pretentious critics can verbally fellate, several hours of lovely and ultimately boring as Hell pictures of mountains and clouds in combo with excruciatingly dull voice-overs of the character's inner thoughts and feelings. I'm so looking forward to skipping it.

Dont listen to the guy above you. It is in fact still that boring ass shit and it goes on slower than any other malick film due to its 3 hour run time. There is a story yes but real plot points hold about 15 minutes total and thats it. I couldnt sit through this movie

Sahil Binder I live in Europe, you have to understand, the beautiful scenery is normal, there needs to be a storyline.

@@GuyOnTwoWheels that's what I said, it's a story which is depicted in a poetic way, it's not about scenery it's about the emotions which the movie holds. Don't take me the wrong way.
And what's Europe like, I've never been there

Sahil Binder Europe is awesome, I’ve been living in Germany for 12 years now, I’ve got 12 more to go until I move back to the states. I’m curious about this movie though, there has to be more to apply to just showing people living. Switzerland is my favorite country here, there are towns in the mountains were cars are not even allowed.
