I was in the fashion industry for 15 years and travelled the globe shopping for trend 3x a year, Tokyo, London, Milan, Berlin etc. Trend hunting was my job. I’ve worked with major trend houses like WGSN, Stylus, JWT, Pantone. The one thing I’ve learned is that trends are never limited to specific periods of time and are very fluid in how they appear. Trends are revisited, altered, revised - new perspectives are added - they disappear and then they come back over and over (particularly in the fashion industry) (Russian Constructivism - 100 years old - never really goes away). Some trends take a few years to grab hold and become recognizable as popular. Some people, who may see and recognize trends early - may be mentally registering them way before other people so they may seem older to them - but not others. To many folks who have no formal training in art/design history they are totally new. I can never assume the knowledge base of my audience. I hope you are inspired.

@@PhilipVanDusen Thank you infinitly for this annual list, I wait every year to discover the new trends in one beautiful recap.
Cheers from an old follower🤞
16 Fluor yellow frames...
This was so much better than other design trend videos I've seen. Much more depth and much more inspiring. Exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for this.
You rock Tia!
Agreed 💯💯
Fabulous as always, Philip. Love the trend names, BTW. And here's an idea (as if you need any more): since you have six years of these now, it would be fun to go back in time and tell us which trends have fallen off the edge of the earth. I'll make popcorn...
You rock Peter! That's a fun idea - but a devils errand even so, I think. Trends may fall of the edge of the earth for a while, but they ALWAYS come back. Design aesthetics are cyclical.🤓
@@PhilipVanDusen I know, right! I'm gonna start wearing bell bottoms again...
😂
Thank you, Philip! This is undoubtedly the most well documented lecture on graphic design trends for 2023. Lecture? Yes, lecture 😉
Viva magenta! I love it. Finally Pantone has picked a vibrant, bold color.
Thanks Philip - this is my go-to video every year for the best in design trends. Each year you are spot on with your predictions and I love pushing my team to see how they can use this to inspire their work.
Great to hear! Thanks for sharing with your team Chris! I'm glad you think I was spot-on...I do my best.
I'm a professional freelancer, which means I miss out on the day to day inspiration you gain from working on a larger creative team. I really appreciated this video's approach to the topic as a high level showcase, rather than trying to get into the weeds on details of how to achieve each look. Thanks for making it.
What? 😂
The statement suggests that they are a professional freelancer who often works independently, without the constant interaction and inspiration that comes from being part of a larger, collaborative creative team. They found value in a video that focused on providing an overview or showcase of creative ideas at a high level, rather than delving into detailed instructions on how to execute each specific look or concept. This approach was more aligned with their needs or preferences, and they expressed gratitude to the creators of the video for their work. It seems that they appreciate content that gives them broad inspiration and ideas, which they can then adapt or explore in their own way, rather than needing step-by-step guidance.@@tweet334
Nice trends
AI art is actually quite a scary trend and something I'm steering clear from. I've gone as far as blocking the terms AI art, Midjourney, Lensa, etc. on my Instagram feed so I don't see any of it. As a Graphic Designer with 30 years experience as well as an Energy Healer with 30 years experience, I don't just look at the design, but I also feel into the energy behind the design.
A big element of AI art is stable diffusion. The stable diffusion databases store images and artwork as reference files, much like we do as graphic designers. The difference is that the graphic designer can be discerning about the content of his/her reference files... The stable diffusion databases are not discerning and in these databases there can be beautiful and innocent art, pornography, images of extreme violence and even medical records. The result is that the AI art is layered with the subliminal messaging, and energy, of all of the images used.
The AI art that you, as the "artist", create are owned by Lensa, Midjourney, or whatever app you choose to use - and this includes any photos you upload to feed the AI - read the small print.
A massive problem is that you are helping the AI to learn, grow and expand. Creative thinking has always been said to be what separates humans from machines... with AI art as the guise, humans are teaching machines how to think creatively. Personally I think a world where man and machine live and work together can be a beautiful thing. However, looking at the state of the world, I don’t think humans are ready for this as I believe that the technology is currently in the wrong hands.
Add ChatGPT to AI Art, and we’re in for a very interesting time ahead.
Thank you for mentioning your feelings about AI art and design. The more we allow AI to be a part of design, the less human we become.
Thanks for information good presentation
Thanks for liking Ranjan
Thank you, Philip! Of course, Ukraine will be happy not to be a trend any more and live a normal life, but now we need all the world attention possible!
Thank you for ALL the hard work you put into these. Much appreciated
Donald, Thanks so much!~ Can you do me a favor as a small thank you? Please share my video with a friend or two! I'm trying to build my subscribers. More to come!
@@PhilipVanDusen already did!
you explained this so well thank you!
its usually overwhelming to see so many unique art styles but u have a calm way of presenting it and i really liked your style :D
افضل فيديو لهذا العام ولبداية العام الجديد 🖤 شكرا
Thanks for this! I've watched a few trends videos/read articles in the past couple of months, and they mostly share all the same trends, but your list has a lot of refreshing and surprising trends I haven't seen discussed. And I agree with you - Daniel Scott is THE BEST Adobe software instructor. I took a few of his courses as a total newbie and I really recommend him.
Brilliant as always. I like to expand my vocabulary of descriptors and reference points, so your trend videos are helpful in that sense too. Not just pretty pictures!
Wow, except the blob-idea, its all my personal favourite "trend" color and art styles. So couldnt agree more :D
We'll definitely be keeping an eye on the 'Holo-morph' trend, as it's such a futuristic and high-tech look. Thanks for sharing!
Happy New Years Philip, it's always a great pleasure looking forward to your annual design trends which have helped me creatively with my business and personal.
Happy new year Calvin!
Hi Phillip! I design my own labels for my company. I have a design background and this honestly should be shown in graphic design programs in colleges. So inspiring! This video really confirmed i am on the right track and also gave me some new ideas on how to tweak a few labels..so amazing!I sent the link to this to my website helper to inspire. We all need this video. Great images! Anyone in design should watch this! Love it! Thank you and congrats!
As always, one of my favorite videos to start the year with!
Amazing Trends 😍👍👍
Thanks Wajahat - great to see you back here this year!
@@PhilipVanDusen it's Great Watching your informative Videos Sir 😇🙏
If i could, I would like it twice. Thanks for this video.
So nice of you
You are so wise. I really appreciate your videos. Immediately after watching the video I started noticing blob design everywhere so I had to come back to mention you're spot on. Also, wanted to note your lack of arrogance is why I truly enjoy your videos. Thank you for that!
Look forward every year towards your amazing yearly trend vids!
Military Style is real industrial looking, love it.
Agreed, BYOL is amazing value and great education!
Angie - you're right! Dan is a GOD.
Thank you. I really appreciate this thoughtful, well-thought-out overview. Excellent samples, too.
Simply Legendary, love your outline and examples!
Wow, thank you! I appreciate the support Rolley.

Just found your channel and learned a lot. I'm a Ukrainian, and I'm glad to see that you mentioned the importance of talking about Ukraine, even in the art field. Thank you for your content and your stance!
Aaaaaaahhhhhh!!!!! Thanks for this! I’m super charged! Inspiration level over 9000!

@@PhilipVanDusen Lol, it's all yours
Thank You for Your Time and Inspiration!!!
I'm relativity new in the graphic design world. Got my own clothing store up. I find these trends interesting and a good spot to work for potential clothing design.
These are great inspirational trends! Thank you for sharing Philip. These give me much to think about and implement in my daily designs. Trend no. 10 or Geosimplicity reminds me a bit of Massimo Vignelli and his designs of the 1970’s and 80’s and his great New York City subway maps. As you say, new trends aren’t really new just reimagined. Love your vlogs, Merry Christmas to you!
Thanks ildiko!
YES! We were all waiting for this. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!
Hey vjcuba! Thanks so much for checking out my trends video again this year! I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Keep tuning in!

Indeed it is!🚀💡
this was amazing, thank you for putting this together.
Great to see so many trends that aren't the same as the previous years. Now, I'm off to take the delorean for a drive.
😂
This time I am not going to complain. Thanks, Mr. VanDusen :)
LOL... Thanks for that...many others have taken your place...😂
Thank you! Very comprehensive and interesting. Spot on.
Thanks Christine! and thanks for being connected with me on LinkedIn.
OMG, thanks, Prof!
Wow Love This
I'm showing this to my sophomore graphic design class (the first real graphic design class beyond learning the software) next fall in the first week. I'm thinking that I will ask them to own one of these trends for the semester and use it (either emphatically or quietly) in their semester projects.
Excellent and in-depth as always, thank you!
Thanks you Philipe for sharing this to all community of designers, I always found this very helpful GBY
Hey Carlos Suarez! Thanks so much for checking out my video! I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Keep tuning in!
Fantastic!
Thank you! Cheers!
Hi Philip, nice job..
Brendan! How are you?
You rock Philip!!
It’s really interesting to see what comes around again and when. Holo-morph has a real 80’s feel to me, certainly the neon like colour palette. Military could be from a span of decades, functional fonts. Great video.
get a life
So helpful! Thank you! And your presentation is excellent. You speak quickly but not too fast and not with too much hyperactivity.
I cant say I agree with all of them, but its a great list.
Thank you so much!
Very nice infos. Thanks
Very inspired thanks. Subscribed. Bye for now .
Awesome, thank you!
I always wait for this content to show up. Love it
You rock Tuko! I appreciate your watching my stuff!
Great segment. Added to favorites! It also displays how trends resurface and gets re-utilized, like organic material. Take the cyber wave aesthetic for instance, looks similar to what went on in the music industry in late 90's to early 2000's. And the vaporwave (others interpretation is New Retro Wave) is definitely an 80's homage. My favorite decade. Would be interesting to return to this trend overview in 8-10 years time to see what it morphed into, or to see what bounced back yet again - like trends often do. I also like what you said about working against trends. I'm a big supporter of timeless design that works generically and independently of trends, but in defined projects that is supposed to stand the test of time of course. Alltough some would say that timeless minimalism is a trend within itself. In my perspective it's more of a style and within that expression we find generic properties. Anyways, thanks for sharing! Much appreciated. 👍
Great insights BC, I totally agree. Thanks for sharing them. "Trends" are really about the past - a style or technique that has gained frequent enough usage that it is recognizable as a movement of sorts. Lots of people get all bent that they have seen these before, that they feel "old". But what is a "trend" is not a crystal ball. Some people expect trends to be the newest thing - but in reality they are currently POPULAR things - whether they have been around a short or a long time. They're about inspiration and where you are going to take your work next. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment.
@@PhilipVanDusen Well put. People (often non designers) use the word "modern" alot as an indicator of time, as modern is supposed to be another word for new. But in fact "modern" today could be a copy of a chair from 1928, or something that's been around for ages and as part of a trend is bouncing back. When someone says " we need something more modern" they almost always mean contemporary in my mind and that is in turn rarely new either - again because of shifting trends etc. It's quite fascinating how people connect modern with new and trends they are able to recognize as old. If they are unable to recognize it and connect no history to it, they say "oh, that looks so sleek and modern!" Just look at typefaces, they could be created 200 years ago and digitized in our time, yet they can look sophisticated and "modern" to many today.
@@Underhills Also well put...I ALWAYS use the term 'contemporary' as opposed to 'modern' when describing design to clients. Often they need help understanding the difference. I agree with your delineation.
Nice Sir
Great video thank you
Glad you enjoyed it Ryan!
Hope for a creative 2023 !!! thank u for the video it was inspirational !!!🤩
Thanks Nikos, great to see you here in the comments again!

Absolutely great collection! I find the Panton calling basically red colour magenta totally confusing especially for those who were not familiar with the name magenta, thinking. OK, so the red is magenta. It's like calling a shade of blue New Green... Cheers!
Thank you
thanks for the info Philip
I love the Rex Ray art behind you!
Rex Ray is of my fav artists. Amazingly creative. Mid-century modern is always my aesthetic of choice.
Awesome video thank you!
I took some courses by Daniel Scott in the past, and he's actually a great teacher. Nice video btw, I've really enjoyed it 👍
Thank you so much! Very informative video.
Dear Phillip, thank you for mentioning Ukrainian designers in your video! It is really important that design could be a voice of resistance.
While I always consider trends when designing anything I also am a huge fan of just being creative and original... Nothing beats standing out from the crowd!
I feel like the Viva "Magenta" is more of a cranberry. But I'm not complaining, it's one of my favorite shades!
I agree! Every time you see an article on Viva Magenta (and even the images Pantone themselves use to showcase it) the color looks a LOT more cranberry than ANY kind of 'magenta' I have seen. It really, to me, seems like a misguided name for the color.
Very inspiring!!! Thank you so much 🥰❤
Hey Silvia! Thanks so much for checking out my video! I appreciate you taking the time to leave a comment. Keep tuning in!
YES cyber wave and vapor wave!$!
