You can kill the happy ghost by getting to come at you fast and the getting out of the way and have it go off the screen. You will then hear a sound and it no longer will be.

That's completely incorrect. RoR 1 was a platforming game, where you used your mobility to position around certain enemies or wait out to heal yourself. RoR 2 is just rogue-like shooter, there is barely any strategy about positioning and you never take note of healing, as succesful run heavily relies on lifesteal, mechanic, that was not a huge deal in RoR 1.

Great video! Just need to point out that tide pool isn’t as much Japanese themed (as mentioned in 5:08) but Chinese themed. Jiangshi is the Chinese version of zombies, hundun is the Chinese ancient beast of chaos, and houyi (owner of that legendary bow) is a Chinese mythical hero, who’s backstory is explained fairly well (if not overly simplistic) in the bow’s description.

Additionally, both the music and the architecture styles are very much Chinese compare to Japanese. It generally reminds me of Siheyuan, a historical building in Beijing. The decoration on those buildings are most likely to be papercutting arts, which is a common sight during the lunar new year.
Now one could say that tide pool is aesthetically oriental for sure, but I’ll personally not make the jump from oriental to Japanese. :)

The fact that the way to get to hell is always wonderful and stressful no matter how good you get or how many times you win (almost 200h and 7 hell wins for me) is my favourite aspect of the first game

My favorite thing about Spelunky definitely has to be the way it adapts old school game design in a modern light to create something both familiar and new! In the indie age, retro pixel platformers are everywhere trying to recapture the magic of the old NES day, but I think Spelunky best of all brings back the block-based tough as nails score attack platformer common in that era by not trying to push a nostalgic angle and instead creating new experiences. I actually love it so much, Spelunky got me into indie game development myself in hopes I can one day work a similar old-but-new angle into my own creations!

This explanation really reminds me of how I felt playing Super Mario Galaxy 2. It takes the mechanics and gameplay of the first but adds new stuff and is able to warp those old mechanics in crazy fun ways. It takes the first game's strengths and makes them even stronger.

  • @Andreecals
    @Andreecals 4 роки тому +63

Well, it's not really a sequel, but the first thing that came to my mind was Undermine, where there's an alternative gamemode called Othermine, changing the original roguelite Undermine experience to a roguelike experience, with the elements and mechanics of the game being even more random and giving a more fresh and casual gameplay.
Also not really a sequel, a Link between Worlds comes to mind as an example of a game that improves upon many of the elements of it's inspiration and creating a really different experience, even if still looking very similar.

The story in the first one was arguably better (or at least as good), and the story in the second one kicks off where the first one ended. game play wise first one has one of the best platforming sections I've ever played in the form of the ginso tree. Though movement in general is more fun in the second game. Both games are only around 20 to 30 hours each if you do everything. So its only around 30 to 60 hours to do both of them depending on how much of a completionist you are.

One of my favorite things about Spelunky 1 was the variety that Derek Yu was able to bake into just those four areas. You could be strolling through the jungle and then stumble along a beehive, or get a dark level and spend your time strategically tossing around a torch to progress, or get a spider level and have to always be watching the ceiling. All the levek feelings changed how you had to play the game in subtle ways, and I love that

In terms of sequels that really expand the original while making things fresh, Isaac Rebirth immediately comes to my mind. I remember playing it on release day while in VC with friends and there was so many secrets we all found and wondered about, like the Boss Rush, the new characters and items etc.. And just going from the flash game that ran not very good, to a smooth 60 FPS game was already more than awesome
More niche but I'd also like to bring up Dissidia Duodecim Final Fantasy, which was a sequel to the original Dissidia Final Fantasy, but better in every aspect: the fights felt even better to play, you had new characters, new gameplays elements, etc..

Spelunky and Demon's/Dark Souls brought back an important old video game attribute: mystery. There is SO MUCH to figure out that it takes hundreds of gamers playing hundreds of hours and scouring every corner to figure out what in the world is going on with the game world. I love that aspect of the games. On the surface, they're already challenging and fun. But when you dig deeper, you find a rich metagame of optimal runs, secret items, weird strategies, and true endings...that's what makes Spelunky really neat.

What do i love about Spelunky?
I love the fact that despite how op you can become, you die as easily. I don't even want to acknowledge how many times i've lost having a jetpack/cape, a shotgun and over 25 bombs, which is a perfect combination for me. Sometimes i had >10 health and got comboed to death. It felt hilarious every time, and it's not too frustrating for me, since every time i knew exactly what i did wrong.
And you never know if you're gonna make it! My first (and last, for now) successful hell run (267th try btw) started like a disaster, and i barely had any health for the whole run. Then i made it, and it felt awesome.
It really felt like i've accomplished something. And i guess that's also the thing i love in this game!

its really impressive how elegantly derek managed to counter shop robbing strategies and how well thought out it all was.
many people would just think "make them harder to deal with" and hope the added difficulty was enough of a deterrent, but instead he chose clever and logical new systems which work to change the meta instead of just break the old meta
    1) running in and fighting a shopkeeper became a bad idea since the most valuable items now blow up which is dangerous and costly
    2) angering shopkeepers makes black market much harder, so jungle route becomes less valuable
    3) having a shotgun+jetpack makes volcana much more dangerous since shooting the shotgun could recoil you into lava, or reflect off the robots, while them and magmars are immune to builets - and the jetpack is prone to blowing up, meaning that getting that old meta combo (which usually requires killing shopkeepers) also makes volcana route more dangerous
    4) jetpack is less valuable now with the addition of other back items, most notably vlads cape.
    5) forgiveness was added, which at first could appear to HELP the player steal from shops, but actually means that you never have to fully commit to robbing shops, meaning you can return to normal gameplay without racking up tonnes of items.
forgiveness also serves to add some strategy to robbing shops since if done right, it can be a short term risk if you think the reward is high enough in the moment, instead of just robbing every shop from the start to maximise items.

One thing I really enjoy about 2 which you wouldn't've been able to comment on at the time of this video, not knowing the chain yet, is how its secrets make so much more sense. Like as much as I love the secrets of HD, things like resurrecting into the moai head to get the hedjet are, in retrospect, kinda arbitrary in a way that most of Spelunky isn't - the way the sequel builds the chain out of more logical (and often more system-based) steps both makes it more satisfying to puzzle out and opens the door for high level play to find clever workarounds in the same way it does for all the other systems in the game.
Managing to cleverly use a mattock or the three bombs you have to your name to trigger a chain reaction and skip the drill down to Vlad, using a well-placed vault to teleport through the back plane into [spoilers] or the many clever ways of bypassing the lava trap which I cannot pull off no matter how hard I try but are very satisfying to see skilled players do feel like the epitome of that 'simple pieces building something bigger than the sum of their parts' thing that makes Spelunky so unique.
That and the very clever shopkeeper changes. Not necesarily that they got harder to rob - they didn't, the methods just changed - but that the sliding scales of revenge and forgiveness turned it into another system to play to your advantage instead of a switch that you flip pretty early on and can never switch back. That was the bit of muscle memory I had the hardest time overwriting in 2 - out of upwards of three thousand runs in HD, I'm pretty sure the only time I beat the game without shopkeeper aggro was getting the low scorer achievement, on account of them dropping gold. In 2 meanwhile, the tendency of the most desirable items to explode when shot and the increasing scale of their response the more of them that you kill combine with the possibility for forgiveness to make many approaches feasible depending on the situation - if I want just this one item, I can quickly dodge out of the shop to steal it without murder, and I'll have them off my back in two levels instead of four, if I can slip past the exit guards without having to attack them - if I want these items, I'll have to buy them from the black market before I set them off, lest they explode - if I get as much money as I can, I can potentially (and this one's brand new to me) *buy* everything I need! The lack of a single Most Optimal route turns it into an actual strategic decision.
Anyway in short the point you made about breaking the 'most optimal' path and allowing for varying paths and strategies is well put and applies to a lot of aspects of the game, even after the novelty and mystery has passed.

I think a good example of a sequel that honors the original and keeps things fresh is Banjo-Tooie.
You start of the game with all of the moves you've learned from the first game so there is no need to relearn them but in case you need a reminder, you can always check out Bottle's molehills in Spiral Mountain. The way notes also changed to. Instead of using them to progress through the main hub, they now are needed to teach you new moves. There is also the ability to control Mumbo who has his own set of moves and is even needed for some puzzles. And speaking of puzzles, the worlds are now much bigger and even interconnected leading to more interesting puzzle designs like the Saucer of Peril and the Dinosaur Family.
But in the end, it's still the same Banjo-Kazooie game you've played before. You still have to collect Jiggies, rescue Jinjos, and have to look around every nooks and cranny to find what you're looking for.

Procedural level generation, so each run is totally unique and a new challenge, and really smooth controls that allow for precision and control. I'm commenting as I watch.
    1. One other thing with the new game when it comes to the ghost. It is MUCH faster and much harder to manage. This is not just because of the speed or splitting of the ghost, but it more about the layout of the maps. They are more narrow and have much tighter corridors.
    2. The dynamic fluids, especially lava are really exciting now.
    3. It's fun watching bananasaurus_rex and others struggle on the new spelunky. Especially them being so excited to figure out the new secrets for themselves.
    4. I am so impressed with the RNG system in these games. You always have a path forward, unless you soft-lock yourself by running out of supplies. They just added so much variety while making it feel familiar. Especially, baiting people into their old Spelunky habits ... like dying in the Ice Level like you did in Spelunky with a certain item to get into the head .... LOL
    5. I'll get back to you on that last question. I have REALLY have high hopes for Super Meat Boy Forever .... 7200 levels of fun. I hope it adds a lot of new gameplay elements :) - One of my favorite platformers along with Spelunky 1 / 2

The choice at 1-4 is great and dynamic. Lots of money? Probably go Jungle. Already sacrificed to Kali and have Paste already? Probably go Volcana. But once you get to the Olmec fight, there's no point to going Temple after unlocking everything in that path. The Tide Pool is almost hilariously easier. You can save the Ankh, unlock Madame's Pleasure Palace, the secret boss fight is easier, and pretty much all the enemies are easier too. Either the Tide Pool needs made harder or the Temple needs made a little less brutal imo

I love spelunky from the bottom of my heart. What i love the most is that there are no upgrades, that leaves with having to learn each and every mechanic of the game, even if it means losing your entire run. I like also that no characters have unique abilities, so that everyone can play his favourite one. I don't care how much this game will get old, but its content will always be for me.

Alpharad often says that deaths in Spelunky are always your fault.
I agree. Dying in this game doesn't come from bad luck, it comes from failing to consider a variable.
For instance, one might die because they triggered an arrow trap which shot an arrow into a cobweb, then threw a bomb into that cobweb to kill an enemy, which launched the arrow out of the cobweb, made it bounce off a ceiling and wall and hit the player mid-jump, causing them to fall onto spikes and die instantly.
That death is the player's fault, because they didn't consider the interaction between arrows and bombs. Everything in this game has some kind of interaction like that, and every death is your fault because you hadn't thought of that. That's my favourite thing about Spelunky.

Tbh i enjoy spelunky because of the reward i get for completing the challenge, because that makes me think that i'm really good at the game. making you feel your death is your fault over and over again just makes me feel i'm getting bad at the game, until i give up because i lose motivation. But people is varies, its just my opinion.

    • @justcuz8202
      @justcuz8202 4 роки тому +4

That's just... False. I respect that certain deaths are your fault, but by the time the ice caves or Neo Babylon come around, it's just... Pure random, if something bad will happen to you or not. A yeti could spawn on top of a landmine on top of a shop or an altar, and that will be YOUR fault, blamed on YOU, even though YOU did nothing but enter the level. UFO's can shoot eachother out of the sky, blowing up one and then another directly towards you, faster than you can react, an alien mech can shoot you from offscreen, a dart trap can shoot you from offscreen, stunning you and leaving you able to do sweet FA about anything coming your way next, and there's just so much random BS that there is no accounting for.
As much as I would love to accept that what you and Alpharad say is the case, it simply is not, unless I'm cursed, and I don't think I am.

My favorite part about these games? They do a good job of delivering upon the scramble, of putting together a harebrained scheme in your head, jumping in with hope and will, and running for your life. So many games do let you become overpowered to the point where the game plays itself, but with Spelunky, no matter how strong you are, one wrong move is all it can take to land you in lava or spikes and end a run, so that feeling never stops.

This is why I must now abandon Buddhism and instead devote my life to figuring out how somebody could design a game in such a stupid way, and try to actually complete the game for myself. Fuck fuck fuck I can’t wait to die and get a boner from the pure ecstasy of resting a run, I’ll do it till the day I die when spulunky 3 gets released and is just revealed to be a torture simulator.

Instead of mentioning something I love about Spelunky 2 I am instead going to mention an issue I have with it and it isn't one I have heard many people bring up: level feelings. In Spelunky 1 you would typically get a few of these each playthrough and they would be unique to each level for the most part. This just isn't the case in Spelunky 2. You have dark levels, and big levels and that is about it. There are bees and spooky levels, but these are now in multiple worlds and the spooky levels are far less interesting than before. We used to have a snake pit, tribal villages, alien outposts, deadly spider dens. Runs still tend to have unique things in each level, but they don't feel as special when you know this could happen elsewhere in that same run.
Also I really miss the random 8 bit tunes you could get as background music in a level. You don't even get that to play when you get an eggplant anymore!

A sequel that maintains the magic of the original, but expands on the foundation: Pokémon Gold/Silver and Crystal.
They quite literally took the foundation of the original and polished every aspect, and improved literally everything you can think of.
World? There's now TWO regions to explore.
Game Mechanics? All new, permanently influencing systems like Day and Night (which comes with time of day events, making the world feel more alive, when folks can call you about a sale going on for the next hour, or Swarms), the Radio (events and a portable music player), Breeding, Held Items, etc. Not to mention quality of life updates to the mechanics already there, like adding the ability to press A at an obstacle that requires an HM to use the ability, rather than having to open the menu every time. Pokémon Crystal added the first female playable character, and made even more quality of life improvements, like animated Pokemon, more radio and story events, area title cards, etc.
Music? Even more intricate than Gen 1, making use of all the music channels for each track.
Up until HeartGold came out, I think Pokémon Crystal was the literal epitome of Pokémon, as it did everything a sequel is supposed to do. Gen 3 and 4 were good, but they also started the trend of Pokémon taking one step forward, but two steps back in other regards (i.e., Gen 3, we gained Abilities, which is awesome, but lost Day and Night and most timed events, which sucks.). HeartGold felt like the last Pokémon game to truly take all the standards at the time, apply them and polish them to the max, before Pokémon continued the trend of taking one step forward, but two steps back.
