- It is Friday afternoon and Oxford Street is thronging with tourists walking down the world’s most famous shopping promenade as Londoners spill out of pubs.
Little did the tourists expect when they came here that so many of the stores would be weird American-style candy and souvenir shops. And little do they know that behind the gaudy exteriors, activities like the sale of illegal goods and money laundering are taking place. Authorities are finally cracking down on this criminality, as well as many millions in unpaid business rates, but how did the West End turn into the Wild West for all these cowboys?
If you want to open a high street shop, you should have to submit a business model and that you can pay the rates bill up front.

What's it got to do with the council who takes a lease on an empty shop? It's between the landlord and the tenant, unless there is a change of use involved.

@ Nobody, It’s a sign for customers who are looking for banned/ illegal goods to buy.
Oxford Street often attracts this sort of thing, currently it's these candy shops and it used to be auction shops, selling fake goods. I blame the people who are the owners of these premises, the landlords of these retail units, who must either have rented them to these people or sold them to them.

The landlords, most likely and going by what I see in other major cities across Europe, are involved and own the real estate with untaxed criminal money. Effectively raising the most expensive postcodes in price. Which cascades to you paying a higher price for housing. You pay higher taxes and higher rents. And now also more fees at the banks because they have buildings full of anti money laundering teams checking boxes.

I live in a one horse town about 50 miles east of Dallas, Texas. We have approximately 10 nail salons for a population of about 15,000 people. Every person in this town will have to be having their nails done for this to even turn a profit. Money laundering. And of course they’re all owned by Asians. Funny thing is, I never see any of these Asian workers shopping in the town for groceries or whatever.
My town is tiny and has three of them. Glasgow city centre has a ton of these and souvineir shops/
For full disclosure, ask the Government these simple questions such as:
what amount of Tax has Amazon paid? between 2008 and 2024
what amount of Tax has Starbucks paid? between 2008-2024
what amount of Tax has McDonalds paid? between 2008-2024
what amount of Tax has eBay paid? between 2008-2024
what amount of Tax has PayPal paid? between 2008-2024

Most of us use ALL of these services (or most of them). If any given Company is legally obliged to maintain accurate Financial Reporting of Revenues and Expenses. The Government is also legally obliged to do the same. So, show us these records immediately. No excuses, discussions, delay-tactics and just show us within 72hours these totals. Everything is computerised - just select those companies and print the details - simple!
The stores aren't the problem with Oxford Street, rather Oxford Street is a grubby, miserable environment that cant attract more lucrative and prestige retailers. if the candy stores are kicked out you'll simply have a ghost town.
Yeah this really annoys me especially since these bloody shops are replacing many a place where I myself and probably many other londoners have many memeories like HMV or ripleys believe it or not piccadilly

Because legitimate companies will be able to afford the ludicrously overpriced business rates which push the prices of all their products through the roof. Sure they are money laundering but it's not like primark is some squeaky clean business either, their crimes are just commited in countries you don't care about.
The truth is owning a legitimate businesses is made hard because of the greed of these councils. Spending money at the local high street is made even more difficult because you cant park anywhere without being robbed by the council. They complain that these money laundering shops are the thing ruining oxford street but wont tell you why the legitimate businesses thats used to be there aren't there anymore.

I don't think the problem is them paying taxes. I think the actual problem is they are paying more tax than they should be.
London has fallen it is now full of barbers, nail bars, sweet shops, tanning shops, and souvenir shops phone shops, they are owned by non uk owners, shut them down take their stock and keep doing this until they’ve gone but nothing happens if this was a std joe bloggs he would be done within a short space of time

Those candy stores are money laundry shops. No one buys there because you must pay 16 £ for a small bag of old candy with fake packaging. They not paying the city any money for rent and taxes.

For clarity:
1.) the core reason for these Candy Shops blighting our once proud High Streets is because those same stores would have remained derelict. The economy in the UK is in a real recession but noone is stating this.
Rising energy prices, extortionate rents/rates for commercial properties are driving our British businesses into the ground.
2.) Post Brexit --> economic decline
3.) Post Covid --> worldwide economic decline and closure of many small businesses
4.) War in Ukraine - sanctions have backfired and drastically affected our economy. Also the supply of costly weaponry/armoury.
5.) Israeli genocide in Palestine (we are indirectly funding - (weapons & re-fuelling bases for flights)
6.) Cost of living crisis - evident, obvious and as clear as day! I never heard of Food Banks in the UK during the 80's-90's. Now, every City and Town has one. Thankfully, the average British citizen has access to these in worsening and troubling times! A Blessing.
7.) TV Licensing --> increased Bailiff activity (unnecessary, unfair, unjust, immoral and actually illegal) - best to keep quiet though
8.) Online shopping be it Amazon, eBay or other --> we ourselves are guilty of causing High Street retailers to fail!
9.) Static salaries, economic slowdown, rising residential rents, zero Government Investment to rejuvenate the economy, despite this Country having enormous Wealth reserves. The Government has a responsibility to its people first and foremost. It's not happening.
