  • Gangs are always looking for new ways to launder their money, and in cities like London, Birmingham and Manchester, using money mules has become one of their favorite methods.
Young and vulnerable people are convinced by criminals, often on social media, to let them use their personal bank accounts to receive and send on their illicit earnings. However, there can be serious consequences for those who get involved, from being locked out of the financial system, to even serving time in prison. This crime is still massively under-reported, which in part is what leaves many young people so vulnerable.
    00:00 Intro
01:45 Meeting the money mule recruiters
06:26 Speaking with a former money mule
09:44 How international gangs launder illegal cash
VICE investigates this new and booming form of crime and meets the recruiters, the police, and people who have inadvertently got caught up in it.

My best friend at our former school (15 years old then) was dealing drugs for some pocket money in a city of Belgium (Flanders) from a big network of gangs across Europe for a year.
The police caught him and send him to a Jeugdinrichting (Youth detention center) for a few months, he got released after that without any major implications.
He told me he brought a PS4 and a lot of candy/food with the money he got, the police let him keep the PS4 and the little money that was left over, they also didn't leave any permanent records on him because he still didn't understand the seriousness of his actions then.
Several years later we're now going to the same university (KU Leuven) and studying Computer Science.

regular people will finally understand how important having a bank account is and how bad it is to be blacklisted and your credit score shut down, all because you wanted a couple of grand you could have got a job and worked for, or started your own business and built up.

This is why I work so hard to make an honest living. I am currently renting tables, chairs, tents, linen, props, setting up dessert tables for all occasions, and more to afford a venue next year. I have been documenting it on my UA-cam channel. It's hard work, but I know it will pay off in the end.

Work smarter, not harder. No point in working like a dog trying to make ends meet, when the wealthy just jack up the prices from inflation. Further slowing you down on your goal of financial freedom.

I see this on snap chat all the time. People of send pictures or videos of stacks of money and ask you if you want to make money. I’ve even had Women claim they are a sugar momma and just need your bank account. Don’t ever give out Personal info period! This goes mostly to the young ones. Protect yourself even with pictures or conversations. Screenshots are forever.

Just because you didn't get caught withdrawing the stolen money from your account today, doesn't mean the law won't be knocking on your door waiting for an explanation tomorrow.
Once you knowingly hand over your bank information to be used in the commitment of just one crime you are just legally responsible as those that profit from the scam for any illegal transactions made with your details.
