  • 3D photography is pretty rare at the moment but it could become much more common as we see photography in the metaverse. My first look at the Kandao Qoocam ego was very interesting.

I am many years old and in my life I have gone through three periods of passion for stereo-3D technology. The first (for me, but there were even earlier), when stereo slides and stereo cinemas appeared. It was in the 60s and my father had a stereo camera and even an amateur stereo movie. There is a large archive of stereo pairs left, and now I am digitizing and retouching it, with the possibility of viewing it on modern VR gadgets. Then, already in the early 2000s, amateur VR cameras and viewers appeared, VR helmets, 3D TVs and 3D projectors. I started shooting VR360 and VR180 3D and posting on UA-cam VR. Unfortunately, 3D TV is over and VR is moving into gaming. Now I'm waiting for the Qoocam EGO to get back to the stereo photo/video of my childhood. The circle is closed and I hope that while people have two eyes, 3D will return to their lives more than once.

I had literally forgotten about 3D tvs! It's definitely an interesting topic and pretty hard to predict the future.

I am a big fan of 3D devices for short periods, but it's really heard to share with others. I have the Qoocam Ego and it's a great idea, but not well executed with common missing features a regular camera has ( auto focus, tap to focus, manual settings, etc.) And 1080p per eye is not enough for VR.
I definitely think 180VR content is going to be more common when it comes to 3d cameras.

It’s hard to find ways to view 3D photography in VR right now because the apps aren’t really there for it. But… 3D photos in VR look absolutely amazing if you can manage to find or make them and somehow manage to view them in VR.

I have an antique steroescope in my house with 3d images of US landmarks like Half Dome and Mt Rushmore. It's amazing how it brings these small black-and white photos to life.

You brought a smile to my face. Viewmaster. Haven't thought about that for a very long time. Both my daughters spent hours with them in the 1980s. I think you are right. 3d viewing will be in our future. I also love the outdoors and will take a cold damp day (and night) in the wilds over a 3d device on my head. But you are right, there is a future for 3d in the comfort of our home and office. Cool

I was working in that field in the mid 90s. Camera resolution was horrible, compute power was not sufficient... all those parts have been mostly solved by now. The display however we are still stuck - unless we get something workable in the size of what Google glass tried it won't take off for the masses.
I suspect until it gets small enough to be in the form of reading glasses or contact lenses it won't take off broadly.
That camera looks neat - but it really doesn't get you beyond the old 3D viewers.
So another 30 years or so :)

I have one of these, and have been doing 3D photography for over 20 years. In my view this is more of a novelty item than a photographic tool.

Definitely. Somewhere between a toy and ahead of its time. As I said though, I think that's because there isn't really any demand for 3D images at the moment.

You can view the 3d video standalone using the cross eye method. Its some doing till you get the knack of doing it.

Agree with the tone of 'this is a shame but probably will happen' - as opposed to a stand alone device like this though, you can see this camera layout replicated in the back of a mobile, which could take it more mainstream. Thoughts?

I think it will be like the introduction of the internet, started on large devices and slowly made it's way into all the tiny things we have.

@@ItsJonnyKeeley possibly, I could see big, then small, then medium.
Can see how it’ll be done (and has been) at a cinematic end, phones seem simple enough, but how would/could it happen at the traditional 1k-10k camera range?

I think that camera looks like a cool idea. I also remember my grandparents having a 3d viewer. I had a go of someone's oculus recently. It was fun, but like all games it got a bit boring after a while.
I know these devices are going to improve a lot over time, but for now they're expensive and complicated. They also scan every detail of your house and send it out over the internet to who knows where.
I also saw the presentation Mark Zuckerberg gave on the metaverse. If he really wants us to spend our lives in there, he's got to offer more than weird graphics and a white sky.

More tech from Star Trek . (TNG to be specific)
This looks like a fun toy (for now) More so if they fix the overheating, battery life and focus issues people are complaining about

Mega verse is going nowhere currently. I know it’s early days, but it appears that nobody is interested. To the extent that Meta is forcing its own employees to use it.

But Meta is becoming a company that everyone hates and is losing credibility every day. We need to have a company running the VR world that we can trust before we immerse ourselves. We are all so fed up with how Meta is operating. I don’t think I could handle all the adds in VR.

    • @ItsJonnyKeeley

I’ve already been photographing in stereo for a few years now so I completely agree. While I totally get why there’s some resistance, and I doubt whether Meta currently has the right approach, I’m still extremely excited about the future possibilities when VR and 3D imagery becomes far more widespread.
