  • The West Norweigan Fjord region is one of the best places for a summer road trip you will find anywhere in the world. The landscapes are incredible, the fjords beautiful, and there are so many amazing hikes and activities both on land, ice, and the water that make it an action-packed adventure and a wonderful place to explore.
    Some of the best Norway road trip highlights can be found on the side of the road and away from the main tourist spots, and you could turn down almost any road and find a unique place. This is why we recommend renting a car and exploring rather than being on a bus tour.
    Is Norway the most beautiful country in the world? We will show some of the best places to visit in this Norway travel guide.

    We just got back from an 18 day trip in Norway and so great to see your video of the route we took, only heading down from Ålesund. If you go back to Norway, I could really recommend going to the north of Norway next time. Go to the city of Bodø above the artic circle, in the Nordland area. Tons of great sights and viewes all over the area of Nordland. From Saltstraumen, Lofoten, Senja and much more. The North of Norway is truly amazing!

      If you want to experience northern Norway and winter you should go to Tromsø 😁👍🏻❄️
      There you can see the northern light (Aurora Borealis I think it's called).
      And Tromsø is a nice city with a lot of fun pubs and nice restaurants 👍🏻

    • @bobmalibaliyahmarley1551
      @bobmalibaliyahmarley1551 Рік тому +1

      @@BengtIvarOlsen Definately, although the Aurora Borealis (Northern Lights) are visible from anywhere in Norway, but especially in Nordland, Troms and Finnmark counties. The 3 counties that makes ''Northern Norway'' are so under-represented in comparrison to especially the west/east of Norway in videos here on UA-cam. I think many tourists are scared it will be cold, but it really isn't as cold as one would think, due to the golf stream the entire northern coast of Norway is pretty mild comparred to other places on the planet of the same ''northern distance''.
      The North of Norway is such a gem that you can't get ANYTHING like it elsewhere, and you have to see to believe the places of Nordland, Troms and Finnmark county. Experience Norway at some of it's most amazing and breath taking views and scenery. Yes, the fjords along the western coast are beautiful and magnificent, but Norway has so much more to offer than the standard ''most known'' seens, hikes and viewes. I can really recommend taking a drive through the entire north of Norway, from Bodø to Lofoten, from Lofoten to Tromsø, and into Finnmark.
      I could really recommend doing such a trip around June, July, August. That's the best months, and northern Norway is AMAZING around that time, it can get up to 25-30 degrees, so don't expect to bring any warm clothes or winter jackets those months.

      @@theslowtraveler2047 If you are going to Norway in the winter you have to go up north. There you get wonderful winter scenery and of course the Northern lights. The further north you go, the better chance to see the Northern lights. There you can also experience the Sami culture/indigenous people of Scandinavia, dog sledding, reindeer, the Ice hotel in Alta is something else.

    If you decide to come back again and you arrive at Oslo Gardermoen Airport. There you have Gardermoen aircraft museum, an ancient forrest not far away from the airport. There's also a Viking grave mound not very far from the airport.
    There are several hotels arround here. Stop here for a night or 2, f.Example at the city of Jessheim. That's the closest city to the airport, about 8-10 minutes from the airport by car.
    Gardermoen. The area where Oslo airport is built, is almost 5000 years old. Gardermoen and the surrounding area was a busy viking trading place, back in the those days.
    So the area around the airport and Jessheim, is filled with history and small gems and places to visit.

    20:10 You should have visited the Atlantic Park Aquarium then after that you could have taken a stroll on the trails right next to it to see part of Hitlers Atlantic Wall.
    You mentioned Godøya, did you not go to see the lighthouse there?

    • @theslowtraveler2047
      @theslowtraveler2047  8 місяців тому

      Would have loved to see the Atlantic Wall. I do recall searching some of the locations of this when on the trip and had only found them to be much further north. Obviously required a deeper search on my part.... We did see the lighthouse but the weather had taken a turn for the worse by the time we arrived so we didn't stay long.

    Great sharing to add to my bucket list, could you tell me more about your car rental experience? Anything you learned to make it more pleasant and less pricy?

    • @theslowtraveler2047
      @theslowtraveler2047  Рік тому +2

      We booked through Hertz and got a free upgrade which made a huge difference to the quality of our time in the car. The only must haves is to make sure you get unlimited KMs in your rental agreement, and that any surcharges for tolls are minimal. It can also help to use an aggregator to try and find the cheapest prices but you may be limited by their participating rental providers. I'll add a link to one of these in the description.

    Lovely sights. We did (almost) the same in our 2018 roadtrip, but in reverse order (Atlantic Ocean Road, Alesund, Trollstigen, Geiranger, Olden, Bergen, Preikestolen). Missed Kjerag and Stavanger, but I'll add them to our next itinerary, along with many other places that I have on my to do list :)

    Obviously, when you live at a fjord fisheries will take place but these towns weren't and aren't fishing villiages, they were often farmsteads or communication "hubs" - it was musch, much easier to travel by boat than over land. Odda owns its modern existance on the production of Calcium carbide )and derivatives) based on local hydroelectric power.
    That whale sausage you mentioned was in all probability made from Minke whale, not an Orca.
    The Minke is not an endarngered species; the 2022 quota was 917 out of a poulation in Norwegian water of an estimated 107,000. There are reasons to oppose whaling but the danger of extinction of this species is not valid.
    Bergen is the wettest city in Europe (average yearly 2250 mm) but is by far not the wettest place in Norway. The wettest weather station is in Takle in tyhe Sogn og Fjordane distric, with an annual average of 2,974 mm.

      We rented a car via Hertz and had a good experience. I don't think I would recommend one provider though. I would shop around and take the best price on offer for the vehicle size you want.... You can narrow your search by only looking at operators that offer unlimited KMs on their rentals. This is important as you may cover a lot of ground!
