SUPER MARIO ODYSSEY looks stunning, but one major detail from the Super Mario Odyssey trailer caused me to start theorizing right when I saw it: Why is everybody ENORMOUS?! Well after days of research, I have an answer. In this episode, I will reveal the reason behind the Human Gigantism we see in Super Mario Odyssey's gameplay! not really. They are probably just humans, while mario and him-like characters are probably hybrids of humans and mushrooms, either toads or their distant ancestors. In super show (cartoon part) they showed an early stage of toads evolution - they were more humane, obviously, until evolution happned.

Don’t forget, MatPat, the DK gigantism also applies to Donkey Kong himself. I looked it up, and I found out that Donkey Kong is about 8’ tall and, according to DK 64 (the only 3D game in the franchise), weighs exactly 800 lbs. Most silverback gorillas in real life are around 4’-6’ tall and weigh 300-500 lbs.
Who said DK is a silverback? He is brown, after all.

I thought he'd say something along the lines (given how high Mario could jump there) that most Mario games don't take place on Earth at all and that his planet's gravity was stronger than earth's so Mario was shorter but on Earth even though he appears short his legs are really powerful.
Tbh I thought that in Odyssey when we saw that some of the humans needed helmets on the moon, but Mario and Peach didn't. And considering that Mario and Luigi were delivered by storks... But the helmet thing seemed like a gag considering the ending showed not only Pauline without a helmet, but the other humans too

Not sure if you guys didn't get the joke or if you're just adding to it, but, if the former; it's referencing the fact that _The Odyssey_ is a sequel (kind of, they're part of the same epic poem series en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epic_Cycle#Contents of which only _The Iliad_ and _The Odyssey_ have survived) to _The Iliad._

The way I see this theory, it ties back to his story being raised in “Brooklyn, NY”.
I think that New Donk City IS “Brooklyn, NY” & that Mario grew up there. Now the timeline’s messy with Mario in general (Yoshi’s Island to Partners In Time, for instance) but with this, my canon version of the timeline is that Yoshi Island games (SMW2, New, DS) is the beginning of Mario & his relationships, after he & Luigi was dropped off to their true parents in New Donk City to live happy lives. At one point, the Mushroom Kingdom was hosting a party & Mario’s parents brought along the two twins, leaving them to be babysat by Toadsworth. From there, he goes on a huge adventure with his future self & saving Baby Peach. As a baby, he gets inspired by the red & green heroes, so becomes more heroic in his actions & motives. But being a baby, he only has vague memory, if at all of his future self.
So Mario grows up to around 18 years old, gets to work on Construction girders & in comes Donkey Kong, fresh from a recent captured from the Wooded Kingdom, kidnapping his childhood crush, Pauline. He raced to defeat Donkey Kong & capture him back up. The city thanked him for not just rescuing Pauline, but stopping the big ape, so they renamed the city to New Donk City, in a way to remember to event. (I don’t know the actual name of the city before the DK thing, so I think it was called Metro City, after the name Metro Kingdom is officially titled.)
From there, Donkey Kong Jr. comes to rescue DK from Mario, who was hired to keep a close eye on the unruly ape, & they both escape to a distant island where they rule on their own. From there, Mario gradually went from construction to plumbing, with them soon finding a pipe leading directly to the Mushroom Kingdom, where Bowser had used his evil magic to turn the Toads into bricks. & the rest is history.
Now, my personal explanation as to why Mario looks shorter than the people at New Donk. Same explanation with the super bananas, Mario grew accustomed to the Toad’s diet with plenty of fruits & veggies grown locally that naturally gives Toads their short stature, hence Mario being only 5 feet tall (more or less, this is general terms) Peach is the only one exempt from this, is because she’s a Princess, thus have access to foods from other kingdoms & lands, so she’ll have a more balanced diet outside of the Mushroom Kingdom’s usual, but she’s still shorter than New Donk’s citizens, so it’s mostly a genetic thing.
I want to take a minute and appreciate how much WORK it took to write this.

I honestly thought this theory was kind of a stretch until a few days ago, when I was playing BoTW. There’s a mission in which you have to go to the Yiga Clan’s, a group of dangerous thieves, hideout. When you enter the hideout, you find a Gerudo prisioner who says that their only weakness is that they have an obsession with bananas, or something along those lines. These experienced warriors just suddenly leave their posts whenever they see one, and then they keep it to themselves, which fits perfectly with this theory, since they probably use them to become stronger. Then later, in the hideout, there’s a huge secret stash of bananas, in the same place where they kept a treasure chest. And what really blew my mind is that the bananas are called “mighty bananas” and when cooked into a meal, they power-up your attack. They basically make you stronger and more powerful. So maybe this banana theory applies for other Nintendo games, not just Mario.

This is a great theory, and I'm not trying to be rude, but you've forgotten about one crucial thing. The fact that this is a different world. It's been proven that the force of gravity compresses the spine, and that if we were to eventually move to different planets with less gravity, humans would actually grow taller, because there wouldn't be as much gravity compression on the spine. So, it's very plausible that this planet could just have less gravity than the mushroom kingdom, and that's why the humans are so tall. I've also come up with a way to possibly prove this, but it's a little sketchy. When Mario long jumps off of the skyscraper in the trailer, that's really the only time he is falling, thus allowing you to use pixel measurements to see if he falls slower compared to games based in the mushroom kingdom. I guess the same thing could also be applied when he is in the jump-rope scene, but falling was the first thing I thought of.
Oddly enough, C.S. lewis wrote about a world with less gravity and tall inhabitants back in the day.

It's possible that the bananas' don't affect certain certain primates. Every member of the Kong family is "related" but aren't the same species. Donkey is a Gorilla, while Diddy is a Spider Monkey, just as a quick example. It's possible that Donkey and Diddy aren't affected because they don't have the right genes. But then again, that kind of means Human Evolution in the Mario world isn't a thing since Humans evolved from primates, which means Nintendo believes in creation and Peach really is the Goddess of the world. Huh, maybe Odyssey was meant to prove MatPats theory about Mario and Bowser having to constantly entertain Peach so she doesn't destroy the world.

Wouldn't it be more likely that the Donkey Kong references are simply meant to imply Mario is *from* New Donk City and that it's the location in which the original Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. Arcade Games take place?

Well, to answer 2. If things are based in the Donkey Kong Universe, things there have been generally more realistic compared to Mario. Now pirate crocodiles aside, visually the residents could still fit into this scope.
I don't know, Donkey Kong Country's art style seems pretty in line with Mario's from DK's big cartoony eyes to his brown hair and peach skin. (Gorillas are Black and Grey.)
I guess the Donkey Kong games just seems more realistic because more of the characters are based around real animals and the color scheme is more earthy.
