- Опубліковано 17 сер 2017
- Joey Landreth, guitarist from the Bros. Landreth, came by the Reverb office to discuss his tuning. Joey uses a Collings guitar tuned to open C, utilizing baritone strings to accommodate the especially low tuning. Joey discusses some of the ways he uses the tuning and he has adapted it to his style.

Listen closely: He simply takes the E major Chord tuned down to C. So it is: C, G, C, E, G, C
Great video. I could listen to Joey talk about chord voicing for hours...
Just converted one of my guitars to a C Baritone. This video was fun to watch and saved me alot of money!
I wish Joey would do an instructional video on chord voicings for C tuning and some song examples.
Amen
Hey Joey Landreth - Thanks for the inspiration!
I’ve been writing a lot in open e lately as it opened up anew can worms for chord voicings as opposed to playing in standard for so long. It’s been really inspiring. I gotta try this on one of my guitars.
Great interview! A talented and humble guy!
It's nice to hear a guitarist of this calibre talking about the difficulty of learning triads, chord voicings.
That box over his shoulder is freaking me out. Kept looking at it like it was going to talk.
yeah it looks like a robot man.
That "box" is a reel to reel tape deck/recorder.
Kids. Lawn. You know the drill. *sigh*
Had to look a "reel to reel" up on google, never heard of such a thing.
Easy there old man
Kids these days...
Finally, somebody teaches us what is the real usage of the little finger!! :D
My time learning Devin Townsend Licks was my first experience with Open C. I've been in this tuning ever since and pretty much almost everything I write is in this tuning.
I was just looking at the chord voicings he's using, and I'm pretty certain they're different open C's; Devin's is CGCGCE, but this appears to be open E down a major 3rd, so CGCEGC, which makes more sense with the baritone strings (there's no way they could get the high E with them).
@@darraghtate440 You can have that with custom gauges strings, baritone on the thick strings and normal strings on the higher strings.
@@darraghtate440 you’re correct! I named that tuning C’VESTAPOL years ago because it just made sense: Open D down a whole step, right? It does have a beautiful sonority with the baritone strings, though!
This is great! Your tone is so rich. I love open C but never tried it this way.
I love it. It sounds awesome.
Set up one of my guitars with baritone strings and open C. Love it. Getting some really cool chord voicing. Now, if only I could play like Joey ...
David Hogeboom Hey David, do you have to cut the nut to do that? Anything else?
David D Nothing other than baritone strings. Probably transgressing some rule.
Trying it out as well on my next strings order! I Love playing in drop C, but haven't tried open C yet. Can't wait to get the brain juice flowing :)
did you have to change the groove of the nut to make them bigger?
I play mainly in Baritone tuning on a Strat [BEADF#B]. Have another guitar for alternate tunings just for fun. The most recent one I'm using is DADAAD [pair it with a tad of reverb and some slow but deep flanger and you have a sitar].
David what guitar are you turning into a sitar, the strat? And is that with Baritone strings?
Very well put. Great vid and great playin dawg
Great video!
Been playing in C#G#C#G#C#D# tuned at 433Hz for quite a few years and have never looked back since. Most soulful and ambient sounds possible in capturing emotional feel out of any other tuning I have found!
I play that same tuning, but in standard 440Hz.
This guy is great!!
Thx, Thx, Thx! God Bless you!
@Joey Landreth
Check out Steve White the one man band. He used double drop d tuning in C standard. One of my favorite slide players.
the robot in the back is staring into my soul
Fascinating-besides redoing the nut and saddle, what other modifications were required? Surprised the fretboard works with baritone strings
probably nothing. I read that his low string is 60 gauge, which is fairly light for a baritone, and D'Adarrio has a 'baritone light' set that says it can be used on standard guitars in drop B or C tunings
New standard tuning has a really cool open sound as well that's similar here. I've been ADDICTED to weird tunings lately. My favorites being half step new standard (so b instead of c) and GDADGB (baritone tuning).
NST in baritone should be GDAEBD
Your tuning is a Gsus9, useful to play both major and minor chords with just 2 fingers
That tone is stunning. What was the gear used?
He uses a two rock and a Victoria reverberammo..
Anybody can tell which is the exact tuning of this guitar ?
I mean fro every single string
thanks
CGCEGC
Does anyone know the name of the intro song?
is that thingy on the ES the thingy for tuning stability? and where do I get one? :) thanks!
Ad Ici De he keeps his capo after the nut, just the capo
Wow
So to use baritone string I need a baritone guitar also? I see he is using standard guitar but only baritone strings.
No you don't need a baritone at all standard scale length Is fine just use heavier strings I'd say maybe 15s to 17s if y ok ur gonna tune all the way down to b
What's he using as a string dampener? Seems like it's made out of rubber, but I'm not sure
Collectives
That's hi capo. Old school D type.
Can someone explain what baritone strings are please?
James Owens Strings made for a baritone guitar (thicker gauges/possibly longer)sometimes just referring to thicker gauge strings. Baritone guitars have longer scale lengths that improve tension but more importantly they lower your register. Think of it like in between a bass guitar and a standard scale (around 25.5") guitar. The longer length can improve tension in drop tunings which is why more and more metal players who were using drop tunings are now getting baritone scale lengths on their guitars. Fanned frets (longer on bass side shorter on treble side) are the perfect middle ground cause they allow for adequate tension across all strings among other things.
3:40 ya know?
I wanna see him play PYT
Good to see pewdiepie's still playing the guitar
This guy is too smart for me. He’s hurting my brain. Gorgeous guitar playing, tho!
Any relation to Sonny or just a namesake, influence, and coincidence?
D
Open C, with C of douChe
CFBbD#GC tuning ?
Maybe tell us what the tuning is?
CGCEGC - I-V-I-III-V-I
Failed to read the videos title and/or description did you?
CYBERMAN: DELETE!
Wait...metal players have been using low tunings for decades. Baritone guitars have a longer scale length than 'standard' guitars and are tuned lower than the typical guitar. So why not just play a baritone?
But why not just play a baritone guitar?
