I was super stoked that Ariel Posen came by my studio to film a bunch of lessons, and we started by revisiting his song How Long which I'd done a lesson on already but wanted to see exactly how he played it and thought you might enjoy getting the finer points and seeing how he brings in melody elements too, and the solo.

Super fun day Justin, thanks for having me!
Ariel Posen I absolutely love your new album. You are one of my guitar heroes, no joke. Thank you for the inspiration.
Was great hanging with you dude! Hope we can do it again!
Great Vid. Ariel, seen u in Edinburgh and I was mesmerised dude. Great playing and the album is amazing. Play it at least once a day!!
Beautiful piece of music man!
Hey Ariel come to Australia, Newcastle would be awesome but Sydney is ok. ; )
Ariel is the coolest guy, hope there’s more with him coming!
yep, 2 on slide guitar coming next week and the week afetr and then some more I've not managed to edit yet!
JustinGuitar hopefully he shows us ‘Try’...(please)
Certainly a teaching match made in heaven. I've been playing forever but I've learned so much from your videos and from Ariel's 'masterclasses' doted around UA-cam. Love this, Im now working on it in standard tuning. Hope you get a chance to do more together.
All these guys we all find on youtube write such great songs and perform them so well that I wish these songs would get on the radio. Everyone complains about terrible pop music is but the talent is out there. They just never find their way to the mainstream. Ariel should be playing in front of 20,000 a night, not 200. Oh well, us in the know still get great music.
Very inspiring. 2 nice human beings and great guitarists. A true pleasure to watch...
Ariel is one of my guitar heroes. His new album is great if you haven’t heard it. His solo guitar work on the track “Get You Back” is out of this world. The sounds of that baritone guitar are just so cool. Check it out if you haven’t heard it. Ariel you rock my friend.
Michael Harless Oh that’s right. I saw that episode. Cool. Either way you slice it, It does sound pretty sick.
Love this track, and I could easily listen to Ariel noodling away all day
Was super cool having him at the studio for an afternoon!
The alternate tuning 'rabbit hole' can lead to many beautiful textures and sounds that are most definitely worth exploring! Thanks for this Justin.
Love the dreamy sound very cool...thank you.
He gets a great sound! :)
Amaaaazing video ! Thanks Ariel and Justin :)
Always blown away by your knowledge, Justin.
Ariel is a kick ass player.
The verse is in the key of A but then modulates for the chorus into the key of D. It's only the minor 4 chord and major 6 chord in the verse that sits outside of these key centres. If the chorus was written without the final resolution to the D chord, and just looped back into the A chord of the verse, then you would describe the chorus as being a modal progression of A lydian, which is the notes from D major but played so that A feels like home. But here the chorus does resolve to D hence it being in 2 distinctly different keys if notated.
Thanks Justin for an excellent episode!
yoo justin these new cameras look great, good job man
Cool video, could have carried on watching this for another hour!
Great stuff.
Dreamy chords are my favourites
this tuning is amazing for that!
Justin! Every video of yours is a motivation to pick up my guitar, you’re the best. I am a 15 year old dude from Belgium and i love punk/rock. Some of my favourite bands are the Ramones, the Pixies, Nirvana, RATM, RHCP, the Clash,... Listening to those bands at age 6, i wanted a guitar, in the guitar store they told me i should start of with a classical guitar. I followed guitarlessons with this guitar and bought a strat at age 11. My guitarteacher told me i should make sure i could play well with the classical before using my electric guitar. I lost the motivation to play the guitar and didn’t play ever since. Until 4 months ago. When i stopped playing the guitar all i knew were the basic a and g chords and no powerchords or anything. In these 4 months you learnt me most of my favourite songs like californication and nirvana. Right now i am stuck. I can do barrechords but i have a hard time picking individual strings with a pick so learning basic solos is rather hard for me. Do you have a course of yours you would reccomend for me? What should i do now?
definitly check out videos about scale practice. By that you learn the Technique that you need and also learn scales, thats a nice sideeffect. And when youre ready come over to germany and lets start a punk band lol
I would say youre 15 years old, already playing guitar with awesome taste in music. Just keep doing what youre doing, you have the luxury of time 😀
GoodToGo thanks for your reply! My german is not too good tho i have 40% but like thats my dream right there starting a punkrock band but there is no one around here that is into that. Could you maybe be more specific, like, what should i do next?
Paul Davis Thanks for that! I will keep doing this but i want to develop my guitar playing. Do you have any advice for that?
@@larsjacobs2341 my advice is to just learn what you want to learn. Dont learn something if it isnt useful to you. If you like RHCP for example theres alot of skills you can develop from their stuff. Snow- alternate picking/stamina. Cant stop- muting accuracy. Ill comment underneath with my music channel
This is awesome Justin...
If Joey Landreth is every in town could you do one with him, That would be great also....
Ariel was Joey's second guitarist for a long time - that's how good Joey is
Great stuff :-)
Cheers!
Any plans to do lessons like this with Joey Landreth, if the chance comes?
Nice
Hey Justin! I have a question, Do you like sitars
It's been 5 plus weeks since Captain's last lesson was posted, only one so far in 2019, is he still taking lessons and are they still going to be posted? It was a really underrated series, really promoted the benefits of any guitar player getting lessons in my opinion. Like a good advertisement for anyone who wonders if lessons would help them.. regardless of how long they have been playing for.
He was busy and then sick, then busy again! - he's back on the 20th, so lesson released after that!
Excellent news, keep up the good work.
Worlds colliding
Does the song modulate?
7:43
You look like James Blunt and Peter Cech combined.
6:47 Yngwie triggered
the sliding part sounds immediatly like Frusciante lol
Dude i immediately thought the same thing!!
Ariel’s fingers are so long! I’m so limited my short fingers,!
I just realized Ariel looks a little like Weird Al.Not an insult, btw.
