You should’ve seen him back in the Formula Firebird back in the late 80’s/early 90’s. He could have a fifth of George Dickel in one hand, and he’d be rolling up a stoney in another, his Buddy would be cutting lines of blow on the center console clock face, and there’d be a female squirting in the back seat. All will working a four-speed.

Two comments. The fact that you were able to shift the gears cross-body with your left arm is a feat I don't think I could even do. Bill, you are the man! And second is just remembering my first exposure to a Cobra was back when I saw the movie 'Gumball Rally' as a kid in the movies. I didn't know what a Cobra was back then, but that car held a special place in my heart after seeing it and the Ferrari Daytona go head to head. And back then, that wasn't a replica they were using in the movie.

Nice replica but, Bill you can't discuss 427 Cobras without encouraging folks to watch the movie, The Gumball Rally made in 1976. One of the star cars of that movies is a real 427 Cobra racing a real Ferrari Daytona rag top. Great driving sequences and an engine soundtrack between those two car at full throttle that is pure internal combustion music. Other cars include 911 turbo, split bumper Z28, 300SL roadster and more. A must watch, by the way the Cobra in that film still exists and can be seen on youtube with documentation and vin number authentication. Nice to see you back Bill, less weather more cars and burnouts in Peters driveway.

In New Zealand a guy got one of the men who'd originally worked on the Cobras to make him an aluminium bodied version. It was so beautifully made that he didn't paint it, he just clear coated the aluminium body.

There's a real one here in our northern Cal town. The owner brings it to cars and coffee once in a while. Much more understated than kit car copies that show up on a regular basis. It has a front license plate on a pivot hinge. One of the little known original features I'm told.

I've only ever seen two originals in person. One back in the late 70s when a guy pulled into the Sohio station I worked at to fill it up. No paint, dinged up, from racing and louder than anything I'd ever heard. He said it had been sitting in his garage for a few years after he stopped racing and thought it was time to get it out, fix it up, and start driving it again. The other was at a car show in Vienna, Austria about 15 years ago. It was roped off, but you could get close enough to lean over and get a good look at the interior. One of the most timeless automotive designs ever produced.

  • @JollyGreen79

I always learn something from Bill in a very entertaining way! In my opinion, if you're gonna put a 427 badge in it, then put a GD 427 in it! A 302 doesn't hold a candle to a 427! For one, there's no replacement for displacement. Second, when it comes to sound, a 302 just doesn't have that deep rumble of a 427. For me, as cool as this car is it lost a few points for the phony badging!
And....who's to blame for that windshield Bill lol!

  • @charlespapineau5428
    @charlespapineau5428 6 місяців тому

You nailed it again, Bill. These cars, even the replicas, are American icons to be treasured. Reminds me of the movie, "The Gumball Rally," where a Cobra was heavily featured. This car would be considered a menace to society and the planet by the lefties, but it symbolizes (to me, anyway) pure fun and freedom. No massive computer screen or nanny controls. Just pure power, function and in-your-face attitude. I also agree with you in that it is a beautiful design that will remain timeless, part of an age where cars like these, and the men who drove them, oozed testosterone. I'm not ready for the gentle hum of battery electric vehicles and plant-based meat.

Just to straighten out some of the history. In England Shelby was a race driver for Sydney Allard. He was an engineer who built race and road cars using American V8 engines. Allard tried to market an English-built American powered roadster called the K3 which had a Chrysler V8 in which Allard called a "Corvette slayer", this was sold through Dodge dealerships but only 62 were built and was a commercial failure. Allard stopped building cars by 1957 and became a parts only supplier. Shelby, when driving for Allard, knew the AC Ace and the team very well as he competed against them. AC wasn't ditching the Ace because the Bristol engine production came to an end; they cut a deal with Ford UK to provide their 2.6ltr straight 6 as a replacement, this was further tuned to deliver 170hp. AC had just started production of the 'new' Ace with 37 built when they received a phone call from Shelby. AC built all 900+ Cobra road cars from 1962-67, they restarted production of the Cobra (as the MkIV) in the 1980s and continue to build the Cobra today with a supercharged Ford V8.

Great stuff! On the heart monitor front the powers that be decided to put one on Gilles Villeneuve one time, his rate never went above 127, apparently not the norm as F1 racers often pushed something like 200 or more. Gilles I guess was just meant for driving, when asked if he was afraid of dying, he said basically, " no, I'm just afraid of hurting the car ". We lost Gilles in a 1982 Belgium time trial and it has been said his anger at his so called teammate Didier Pironi in a prior race led to possibly Villeneuve's over the limit on that fateful day.

The first F1 race that I saw in person was the Canadian GP in 1981. A friend and I had scored a 3 day pass, so we were at the track for all the events, including a practice that was done in the rain. I did get to see Gilles Villeneuve spin out in front of the bleachers where we were sitting (pretty sure they didn't have the rain tires on).
Was heart breaking to see him crash a year later when I watched the Belgian GP on TV.

Carol also only had one car built for the show circuit, but he kept repainting it so it looked like he had more cars built

During the housing market crash in 2007-8, I took a job pressure washing just to stay afloat.
One of the clients pulled up in one of these and, yeah, all agog, I did ask "is that a real Shelby!"
As Bill mentioned, of course it wasn't.
Caught my attention and was awesomely cool, nonetheless. :)

Rip Carl Shelby. Thats my dream car if all times since back in the 90s when I used to see these is the Robb Report. When I thought its a kit car. Like my motor bicycle that took a crap when it rain in late September after when I went to the car show 18 mile from where I love at. Til this day its collecting dust inside my storage while the gas tank is bone dry while sitting for the whole fall and upcoming winter when the back tire center bearings got loose when the chain wont stay on the sprocket for performance... So its too be continued for next year.. While im working on my W123 1983 Mercedes 240D..
