    I can't believe that after dunking on Anonym and emphasizing his love of death in movies he missed one of THE best deaths I've seen in movies. The lights going off on the island, the manta ray glowing below Moana's canoe, the brightening of the stars that guided her.. It's chef's kiss and he missed it!

    Fun fact about newborn turtles and the little ritual: a big thing that's always made clear is that if you're going to help them find the water, you absolutely cannot carry them there. They have to find it on their own.
    This scene is essentially how Moanas journey ends up going out on the ocean. She may have been pointed in the right direction, but ultimately she had to do it on her own.

    Dylan if you’re reading this, remember that the Heart of Te Fiti has the power of life itself. The moment Grandma passed it to Moana, death came quickly for her. It’s implied that her lifespan wasn’t supposed to be as long as it was, and that the only reason she lasted as long as she did was because the power of the Heart was keeping her alive. If that part feels out of nowhere or sudden, it’s because Grandma was keeping the Heart safe for Moana until she was sure she understood her mission and was old enough to complete it. Because the second she gave the Heart up, she would die, and if she wasn’t absolutely sure Moana was mature enough to take it, then all hope of having someone from Motunui return it would be lost.

    a couple of notes to add:
    1. the reason she goes out at night is because the ancient polynesians used the stars to navigate, they were expert wayfinders and they never had written maps, only the night sky
    2. that forehead touch is actually a nose touch, called a hongi, and you breathe in together as you do it. it's a greeting, kind of like a handshake but a bit more spiritual and respectful
    3. moana literally means ocean (in te reo maori which is my frame of reference but also in other polynesian languages) which sounds nice as a name but makes all of the ocean stuff feel a bit on the nose lmao

    • @Indywood
      @Indywood 2 роки тому +7

      Yes I'm always confused on the characters are they meant to be maori or Samoan??? Or because I'm from new Zealand and we use the hongi as a greeting but people are saying she's Samoan? Or is she just a representation of all Polynesian decent ?

      @Kim The reason why it became Vaiana in Europe is that Moana was already a trademark in the EU. In Italy there is also something about a famous porn actress whose name was Moana but I'm not too sure how it influenced the Disney movie.

      @wilhua3083 2 роки тому +8

      also, the spacebar somehow inside of the disney browser just corresponds to pressing "enter", so basically, if the last thing you highlighted/clicked is "fullscreen" or "exit fullscreen", the spacebar will just repeat that action. If the last thing you clicked was "pause" or "unpause", then the spacebar would correspond accordingly. Is this terrible UI and UX design? Yes. Is this an oversight? Possibly, but a very stupid one, because in other browser based players, they always default the spacebar to only being binded to the pause and unpause function, whereas disney was dumb enough to not do that. And the unpausing and pausing for 1 frame might be caused by your keyboard's high refresh rate? because the player is registering 2 spacebar inputs when you only mean to input once.

    I had never thought of that but the moment when Moana gives advice on the crops dying and the fish lacking is crucial to the message of the movie : there's no easy fix to the environmental issues we're having / going to have, we have to completely alter our perception and relationship with nature : we see it as a sea of ressources we can just exploit but it's alive / it has a heart and it needs to be taken care of

    Regarding the body hair issue: Obviously Disney won't animate female characters with body hair cause *some* parents may lose their minds, but indigenous people tend to have less body hair than non-indiginous folks. At least that's the case for Amazonian tribes in South America. And in Mexico as well. Back in the 20th century, brown-ish, non-indiginous famous people from Latam would wear that body hair proudly to clear any rumors of them being indigenous. For example. Frida Kahlo

Don’t get me wrong I’m sure a woman having armpit hair would cause a fuss but if you’re animating a movie unless it’s like hyper realistic I highly doubt they’d add armpit hair

Most islands have their own variations on Maui but I always found Te Fiti giving Maui a new fishhook funny cause -for me at least- I grew up with Maui’s fishhook being made from his grandmother’s jawbone. Moana literally means ocean in Maori. Maui (I think the Maui represented here) actually birthed my country. With his hook made from a whales jawbone (I think, maybe it was his father's jawbone) he sailed to Aōtearoa (NZ) and pulled the North island up when he caught a huge fish. That's why in māori, the names of the islands are "te Ika(sp??) O Maui" and "the Waka o Maui" meaning the fish of Maui and the boat of Maui for the north and south islands respectively. And the reason the North island has so many hills is that when Maui told people about it, they started cutting bits of the fish up to eat and stuff. Māori culture is pretty interesting at alot of points.
    Also, the crabs accent is New Zealand. It's played by jamaine, from Flight of the Conchords and What we do in the Shadows.

    • @joeypotter6051
      @joeypotter6051 2 роки тому +33

      It was his grandmother's jawbone actually! The South Island was the waka (canoe) but the more common Māori name for the South Island is Te Wai Pounamu, because of the precious greenstones (pounamu) found in the water (wai) there. There are also a lot of islands in Aotearoa that have mythology around being people lying down, e.g. Te Mata Peak.

    For anyone who wants to know how Maui died (or the version of the myth I grew up with). Basically, dude wanted to get immortality for mankind, again a misguided "good" deed, and decided that the way to do this was to eat the heart of Hinenuitepo (translated to Maiden of the Night), the Goddess who guides people to the after life. To do this, he decided to climb up through her "whooha" (where life begins) and make his way to her heart (or out her mouth like some variations). He shape shifted into a lizard and began his journey well Hine slept, but he made the mistake of bringing his mates with him who were tui (bird). The bros decided to laugh at Maui, shocking Hine awake and causing her to slam her legs shut.
    And that's how Maui was killed, by thunder thighs.

  • @lanaspirelja1218

    I don't know if anyone already commented on this but there is a theory that just before Moana got to Maui she died (she fell off her boat in the scene before with the storm) and became a demigod. That's why she was able to find Maui and speak to her dead grandmother. You'll also notice that Maui told her that he was thrown into the ocean (I presume he died then) and only after that did the gods find him and he became a demigod. Moana also dived to the bottom of the ocean after she gave the heart back to it just to retrieve it which would also probably be very hard if she were still human but not if she were a demigod.

      I think that's possible, although I don't think Maui died when he was thrown in the sea. In the actual legend, he is cast into the ocean by his mother, but "Tangaroa's children" (fish, waves, etc.) keep him safe until he ends up back on the beach where his grandfather finds and raises him. I don't think he died then, but was gifted his powers by Tangaroa (god of the sea).
      Btw, this is just the version of the legend I was told, but it might be different in other cultures!!

    It wasn't explicitly covered but the reason the ocean couldn't just put the heart back itself was cause te fiti was te ka, who couldn't be touched by the water. There's still the issue of the ocean picking and choosing when to actually help moana, but I think the general idea behind that is it tends to only assist her when she's already dead set on doing something anyway, cause if it was too easy then moana wouldn't connect with her wayfinding roots and start up her people's voyaging again so the ocean can be travelled upon?

      I've encountered this problem across many sites, even UA-cam. Like the comment above me mentions, it's usually remembering what button you last clicked.
      I think the mouse/click is selecting other buttons perhaps, so when you press the spacebar, it presses what is selected, instead of pausing (its usual function)
      Clicking the video after seems to unselect the button, and fixes the spacebar/pause key.
      Seems more of a general media player issue than any singular website, but I'm not sure and I'm def no expert

      @@BelleFlower15 I mean you don't have to like it, personal taste is personal, but extrapolating to it therefore being hard for children seems not true based on all the available evidence of children loving the heck out of these movies.

    It brings me joy whenever I can predict AND skip Dylan's sponsors. I feel like a mini Dylan analyzing misdirects

    I loved this movie because my country is ploynesian and it is so cool to see myths and stories that i grew up with represented in the mainstream media. We had picture books depicting the story of maui and his adventures and seeing them represented in his song and story was so nice. It felt like a piece of home was in the movie

    not sure how Dylan missed the whole “grandma came back as a ray” indication of her death the first time, but I will say it’s an ironic mix up to have him wishing for *life* throughout a film lol.

    I’m rewatching a bunch of Dylan videos. And the Disney spacebar rage is one of the funniest things. I’m not sure I even want them to fix the issue.
