I have a written version with simple print at www.improvemain...
Troubleshooting a 3 phase motor system. I teach these methods and more on site on your equipment. George@improvemaintenance.com
Done hundreds, this is the cleanest place I've ever seen, where's the water and hazardous chemicals, thats where I learned.
If water and hazardous chemicals were part of an electrical system what you said you matter, but clearly that not the case, so what you stated is out of place. Electricity works the same way regardless, of where it is.
Motor. Disconnect. Overload. Contactor. Fuses. Power.
Check. Great video. Thanks for sharing this great information.
Great video man. 10 yrs maintenamce...excellent suggestions...thank u
Professional and impressive use of theory. Great job!
Very well explained. I have slow it down and rewatch because a lot is covered in this vid.
First test should be for voltage to ensure the circuit is actually de-energized. You should test your meter first on a known live circuit, then test on the de-energized circuit, then check on the known live circuit again to ensure your meter is actually working and not falsely indicating 0 voltage. Make sure your meter is properly rated for the Hazard category. usually 480vac 3phase motor circuits are considered CAT III. Minimum your meter should be rated for CAT IV 600V or CAT III 1000V even better. It should be certified by at least 2 independent labs like UL CSA TUV DVE for this CAT rating. Your test leads should have been inspected for any damage before use and your probe tips should have the least amount of metal exposed as possible. Ideally you clamp the COM lead to a ground away from the terminals to be tested first. and then use 1 hand to probe each terminal for voltage 1 at a time. This creates a greater distance between the two leads and lowers risk of accidental arc flash forming between the probe tips. After you are sure the circuit is de-energized then you can check phase to phase ohms on the motor windings and T leads.
If you don't know this you shouldn't be touching this equipment
Dude, no shit.
No shir huh, you copy paste that from Google 😂
very good testing, explaining in a simple way...
very good, correct PPE, this is the way it should be taught, very good
I start at the other end, most faults are not at the motor, most of the time there is a protection trip, phase supply fault, overload or over temp.
Great information like the way you explain the topic
GREAT VIDEO!..YOU COVER BASICS AND GET TO THE POINT!!
If you motor starts with the N.O start button and stops correctly, the control circuit is working properly and you can eliminate most of the steps shown in 30 seconds or less, then just check the power circuit and go from there. If your motor isn’t wanting to start, try manually picking it up with the seal in contact, If it starts, check start and stop button.

Hey bro if i i only have 3 cables and are ground red and black so my question is i want to install a little switch fuse box can i connected only using ground red and black
Please let me know if you can
to check the motor it's better to use isolation tester. more than 0,5 MegaOhm between ground and phases. You check the cable also.
Very helpful. Thanks for this.
Thank You for the feedback. If you have any video requests go ahead and post in comments and we will try and get one together.
I do actually...a turn to turn short. Walk us through how to diagnose a turn to turn short in a 3 phase motor.

Please *confirm and clarify* the following;
Is it possible to connect 3-Phase twin motor control panel in series (*two Numbers*) - for the same/ only one pump set- motor ??
Thank you so much
Watch this video more than once a grasp what he is saying also watch other videos on motor Controls and how to use a meter along with the danger of 3 phase 480/ 600 volts potential ...period
Good video!
thank you for that sharing sir.
Very good. Thanks
You said “never throw a disconnect under load”. Sometimes you have to throw a disconnect under load if there’s an emergency.
Excellent video thank you!
Good explanation thanks
Why are you checking the motor at the disconnect? According to your print the normally open motor starter will be open. Kinda dumb
Rubberneck
He mentioned in the video that sometimes a disconnect is installed near the motor to provide a convenient point to lock out for safety. In the schematic, this disconnect would appear after the overloads and before the motor.
What are you meaning by "control voltage"? Are u meaning 24VDC from the power supply?
yep going to a1 and a2
Great video
I understand the incomeing control voltage but what is the incomeing line voltage?
I ment to ask what is the difference of income line voltage and income control voltage
@@vincentsanchez9195 Line voltage is coming from the motor control center or substation. Control voltage is on the secondary side of the control transformer and has been stepped down to run the control circuit.
Can some one explain what he means by incoming control voltage? Where is the incoming control voltage on the Contactor?
A1 and A2
To check the motor shouldn't you determinate the motor or at least check the termination? I've had instances where the motor shoots good from the cabinet but you open the peckerhead and the phases are melted together. Obviously it would cause the breaker to trip but still from the disconnect you would see the same reading if the phases were not shorted.
Still an awesome video though!
Explain in more detail please...I’m thinking you are speaking of disconnecting the 3 power line leads and checking the motor leads in between windings is that correct ???
Debiste seguir el tema que estaba hablando el dr nieves
why not check amperage???
That disconnect didn’t need a supply side bonding jumper, since the enclosure didn’t seem to have eccentric knock outs
thanks
I have a question, how do you get a 3phase motor out of Lock Rotar Amp
if you remove the input voltage to the motor and make sure the motor shaft is free from any other mechanical sources , then the motor rotor should turn free within the motor housing. However, if the motor shaft fails to turn with no voltage applied , then the motor needs to be taken apart and inspected for bad end bell bearings and remove the motor rotor from the field and check for any damages there as well.
the locked rotor motor test is basically when the shaft of the motor is locked so that it cant move and then the rotor winding's are short circuited and checked that the lower frequency applied and reduced supply voltage matches the full load rated current of the motor
Hey, will checking the resistance between each phase of the motor not give the same resistance, as all of the windings are connected together in the motors terminal box?
+rory johnstone if you check resistance between each phase then yes the resistance should be the same as they are balanced. if they were different then they would be imbalanced and cause the motor to have a problem
+Charlotte Cottam As i understand the links for star/delta in the terminal box on the motor would have to be disconnected to properly test between phase to phase. As checking phase to phase with the links in will not show the fault due to the three phases being tied together in the terminal box.
In order to properly checking the motor winding resistance a megometer would be required as well. If any motor winding shows any resistance to ground. the motor field windings would have to be repaired then
Your meter may pick up small differences, however you should disconnect the motor from the circuit and test the insulation of the windings with a megger or meg-ohm-meter
Thank you, really helpull info. xD
Did I see a AB power flex 40 along with AB C09 DJ01?
Ughh..
Your written list is 404 error for the url.
Is the incoming control voltage 24VDC?
yes
sometimes the control voltage is 120 VAC if a step down transformer is used from the main power. This would all depend on the type of coil voltage used in the main contactor
do 3 phase motors not need an earth? what about neutral?
Peter Brown
They do require an earth ground. In the United States it is usually the green wire as shown in the video when he shows the inside of the disconnect box.
There is no neutral wire in a 3 phase motor. Each of the 3 phases is a hot wire.
no neutral wire is required only a green ground wire
i prove exellent circuit
Your written version and simple print link is bad.
i feel like inside the airplane
Very informative.
video could have been much better. Couldn't fully see what you were doing
Most 3 phase systems in the us are 480v???? Hu?
Its true

0:32 the truth
In an absolute sense, this is a good effort, but this is not a good "how to" video: the narration is too fast, it assumes extensive knowledge and experience by the listener. This is for experienced people only, and if they are already experienced, they don't need the instruction.
Improvement can start by practicing the narration with no slurred/drop-offs toward the end of the sentence or idea. (Slurred end-of-sentence drop-offs alienate the listener because it shows an attitude that says "this stuff is so basic and elementary, and I'm bored with having to explain it to you.... "
The narration should also have pauses between sentences and paragraphs, as opposed to the aggressive, pace here, which eventually sounds like an advertisement for the company, as opposed to an actual how-to video.
hg2 you should make a video showing everyone how it’s done....duh!!!!
How to videos shouldn't exist for electrical stuff. It's too dangerous. Only licenced electricians should be messing with this stuff

I'll look for a competitor that does it better.
@@hg2. well when someone you know dies because they're trying to be a jack of all trades then you'll understand
This is incorrect!! If your resistance phase to phase is low means you phase insolation is weaker and your about to phase out!

to fast video is terrible
Talks way too fast wow
Slow down. You talk too fast. I could not keep up
