Well if the plan is to have within 100 years or so a total population of nothing but retirees and no children leaving a dying nation of elderly people then this is a good move.
@@MWDJR173 given the Filipino culture, I don't think that they are in danger of not having enough children, plus the retirees that are staying in the Philippines are bringing income with them, resulting in a net gain similar to tourism with little to no drain on resources. Rather it is quite the opposite to a drain on resources when you consider the retirement money being spent in the country.

You can do that with just a tourist visa, lol! In the Philippines, you can stay in the country for up to 3 years straight without having to leave the country for a visa run. You just need to extend your tourist visa when needed before it expires so you won't have to pay penalty fee.

I have lived in the P.I. (in Makati, Rizal) and I found my years there to be a busy, joyous, creative time of personal and professional growth. I would not trade the experience and the fond memories of those years. Perhaps it is not the right place for you, sir, but I believe people do well wherever they are when they believe in themselves and their abilities. We make our own “best places” by our choices and determination.

I love it enough that I would be very happy driving around the islands ands and spending time with the people and enjoying the beauty.
Most of people here in PH have no problem with Chinese getting ban from this program, most people even support of limiting Chinese immigrants and tourist coming in not only they harm jobs abuse almost everything that can be abuse but also they harm Chinese that is already living here in PH peacefully. Any nationals are welcome here in PH but this time we the people wants to select the people that coming in our country.
I have an SRRV visa, since 2015. My wife owns our home there. We contribute to the economy. I can empathize with the Philippines government. The new Chinese are generally rude and abusive and feel un-due-ly entitled. The Chinese that have been there for generations are much more laying low. I wish the Philippines regards and blessings on their revised program.

Very few of the westerners living in the Philippines bothered with the SSRV program anyway. You can enter the Philippines as a tourist on a 1 month visa (issued on arrival) and simply keep renewing it every few months up to 3 years. Then you need to leave Philippines for a day, come back on a new free tourist visa and start the process again. I know a lot of westerners living permanently in Philippines and not one bothered with the SSRV visa. Most don't have the 20K needed (if you are under 50 or if you cannot show guaranteed income of at least US$1000 pm...otherwise a 10K deposit.....also which most don't have)

Having lived in the Philippines in 1991 at Clark Air Base. I am not to worried since now I am 58 years old. Knowing the Philippines I think the age limit will increase to 50. Many Chinese nationals have become a liability now in Asia. Like having Chinese students throw items at police at the Airport customs workers. So, I welcome the change which will not affect to many Americans in the future.
Malaysia has also suspended their MM2H programme earlier this year.

I moved to the Philippines in 2008 at 58 years old and became a permanent resident in 2010. My wife and I moved to the USA in 2013, so my residency expired in 2016. Many times I have wished we would have stayed.

Thanks Andrew! They were concerned based on the current issues with China's land grab of islands in the South China Sea. The thinking is that many of the Chinese on SRRV are "able-bodied" soldiers in the Chinese Army. They've got a regiment of active duty Chinese soldiers already "stationed" in the Philippines...

Been living here via a tourist visa 9A sub category. Costs me about 750AUD a year and I normally leave twice a year. Obviously due Covid I have not left. I arrived beginning of March from a visit from my home country and had two trips planned one in May and the other September. Obviously both canceled.
Once your here obtaining a tourist visa is simple and can be extended in periods maximum of 6 months. You can stay up to 3 years. Given you stay out of trouble there is no reason why you can't just enter on a 9A visa waiver then keep extending as necessary. I was 32 (Mid 2016) when i first arrived with the idea of staying. Had no issues at all. The majority of my income derived from my home country. Practically live a life like a retiree.
I agree with you on this. It's practically stupid for anyone of 35-45 years of age to even consider this visa. You can basically enjoy the country for a year for the money you need to pay just as a processing fees for SRRV Visa. But only if you want to enjoy the country. If anyone has any plans to work in the country or setup a business, this SRRV Visa is much easier to get if you have the money. If you don't have money, your only option is to somehow find a job who can help you get an employment visa, or marry a filipino girl.
I believe this is just a temporary thing, as the program is scrutinized for security reasons as you mentioned. There will likely be some revisions but shouldn't affect western retirees as a whole.
The program are intended for South Koreans where young males as low young as 35 can retire after years of military service. It's not meant for Chinese mainlander, but Chinese explored the loophole

They stopped the SRRV about two months ago because over 30,000 applied for it and it looked suspicious. I have a 13a visa so doesn’t affect me!

Philippines is home, No better place than home no matter where you go. Been away most of my life but will be nice to spend a month or 3 each year and be a Filipino.
I'm a Filipino, I was born in Baguio City, Mt Prov. I live overseas for years now. I go visit every year, but to retire there, it's a big NO. With the influx of communist Chinese in the country and the serious government corruption, never will I even consider retiring in my homeland. I have properties in Northern Luzon, and it's up for sale.

I went to Baguio in Feb this year. Gorgeous city and I loved the people there. I was actually considering retirement there due to the cost of living and weather. Plus language isn’t a problem there at least for me.

If you got the money, pretty sure Malaysia is your best bet right now. Kuala Lumpur is the 2nd best city in asia for intercontinental and inter-asia flights, and what you can get for the min 250k investment is frankly jaw dropping. I'm broke so xD that route aint for me. But i still go to KL for affordable penthouse apartments, rooftop pools, great food at low prices. Honestly its one of my favorite cities. So underrated.

By “still standing” I guess you’re referring to the wind and rain ravaged homes and schools that look like they’d been bombed after typhoons hit, with floodwaters as high as rooftops (which is where many families seek refuge).
Forget about foreign aid - even though the millions of OFW’s around the globe arguably could be considered as a type of foreign aid, as they ship perhaps billions of dollars to the Philippines annually. Why hasn’t the Philippines itself LONG AGO effectively dealt with the impact of predictable multiple typhoons every year? Where are the flood control projects? Apparently few and far between. Even Los Angeles, California and other places in the U.S. Southwest - which get no typhoons and very scarce rain - have massive flood control infrastructure. No excuse for poor Filipinos to be subjected to deadly flooding several times per year.
The Philippines DESPERATELY needs a president who’s #1 goal is to develop the nation’s infrastructure, especially in respect to flood control, electricity, water and the Internet. With an aging Japan and a young, well-educated population the Philippines SHOULD be a rival to Singapore and South Korea.
Well, if the Philippines wants to further maximise its foreign investment opportunities, then further reforms may be needed, to the extent that its Constitution might be amended. However, this is a divisive domestic issue, due to several factors (which I will leave it at that).
It's important to note that prior to this suspension, some employees of the Bureau of Immigration have been found to be involved in a scam wherein they have allowed chinese tourists to get into the country "illegally". The former are already being investigated and relieved from the service. There could be a slew of reasons here but two possible reasons that stand out to me are security issue for the country given that there's a land grabbing issue with China and purging those tourists that got in illegally after bribing some employees of the Bureau of Immigration.
Interesting that anti-Duterte ABS-CBN never mentions that many of the 30’ish Chinese “retirees” are suspected of being Chinese military personnel laying low for the time being until China makes its move on the Philippines - which they probably expect to do if Biden got into the White House but THAT AIN’T GONNA HAPPEN!

Some POGO businesses are not paying taxes. Some Chinese businesses employ Chinese from China and violate laws like sewerage issues in the food industry. Some Chinese buy the properties for very higher price than the market value so it's kinda a threat. There are also high number of Chinese drug-related cases. Our president hates drug dealers.

Yes, I got burned on this. I am in the Philippines and will soon be married, but I had planned to use the SRRV program and was just about ready to get into it when it was suspended. The program was a very good program in my eyes but I wondered why even with a large deposit, they allowed in retirees as young as 35 to be part of the program. (The deposit was higher for that group) This is what the Chinese were taking advantage of. Theoretically as a retiree you could have a business and compete in the business market, once retired. I still have a little time left on my tourist visa and have a Filipina girlfriend (an older one, not too young) and so we are now pursuing marriage. Hoping we can complete the requirements before my tourist VISA runs out. But if I am forced to leave then I will reclaim my SRRV deposit that was already made. So they will lose more money. Yes, starting retirement age should be at 50 for the SRRV program. It is so hard to go anywhere now days because of COVID. Even just going to immigration at Angeles City requires permits if you don’t live in Pampanga.
I've never heard any foreigner being forced out of the country(ph) because of an expired visa. usually they get tossed out because of bad behavior or crime..
if you're a foreigner and overextended your stay, worst punishment would be a fine. which would just be the amount you owed should you have extended, plus a very small fine.
Many nations are talking about making their programs more exclusive for a certain type of nationalities that they want. It really won't surprise me if less desirable nationalities will face a much harder time racking up residencies in the future.

Great video refreshing to see a guy that knows what he's talking about,i Live in Thailand all you have to do to understand their immigration laws is look at history, They have never been Colonised unlike most other countries in South East Asia and they learned all about Chinese migration and the effects in the 1800 s especially Chinese moving into Thai Business, Their foreign policy is excellent they favor neither the Chinese or the Americans and treat both countries equally Thailands their show and they will run it regardless of attempted foreign interference and now when you look at what's happening with visas in the Region their immigration policy is way ahead of the game yes Thailand is closed at the moment but they have been the most successful in dealing with the Covid outbreak I would not want to be in any other country at this moment in time.

Get an ACR-I card instead. Less of a hassle and cheaper too. A SRRV doesn't give you any extra benefits except head of the line (VIP & diplomatic lanes) at airports and basically only Manila. If I had it to do all over aging that's the route I'd take.
There are many work pass/resident visa options available in the Philippines: 9G (commercial), 47A2 (BPO multi entry), 13 B (spouse), TRV (Restricted countries), and you can set up your own business with 100% ownership too as per the country’s Republic Act No. 7042 or the Foreign Investments Act of 1991 (FIA) outlines these incentives and their requirements for availment, for domestic, or export.
Really probably okay, when people invest in Condos, etc. in Philippines, and future Pandemics indicate 60 years or older on going to be jailed in there homes, really isn't worth it. I was considering, but not now, trust is a little lost, glad I am not stuck, from here on it's going to be short term rentals or six months visas and rentals. 😊👍🇨🇿❤️

That is not a problem for 60 years or older. They don't need to go bar hopping anyway. I'm 76 and staying home makes me feel safe. My home is my entertainment center. My wife treats me like a king. And I don't have to go anywhere unless I think it is necessary.

How about when people invest in home ownership? My house and lot was valued at P1,800,00.00 in 2010. I'm sure it has increased in value because of improvement's I've made from that time, like a garage large enough to hold an SUV, a van, a mid size car and two trikes.

Rents are down in BGC true but the US dollar is is down too so basically it’s a scratch. Lots of people here got excited about slightly lower rents due to pandemic but based on currency exchanges a person might be at basically the same rental rate.

Will be interesting to see how this plays out. We once bought a condo off the plan in Mariveles with the intention to retire young using the SRRV. We ended up getting our money back due to lack of progress in the development. Still love The Philippines but maybe retiring there won’t be as easy as it could have been.

I see this sort of situation with Hawaii. I grew up there and left in my mid-20s for the mainland US. I tried moving back 17 years ago and realized I'd be fighting tooth and nail for a job with people who've been there all along and bounced back to the mainland, vowing to not return until I'm ready to retire and then can return home to retire, and bring money in (social security). I think you have to seriously look at, Are you bringing money in, or taking a job from a local?

With the experience I had with the PRA, an in depth probe should be made for corruptions for some of its officers. That could be one of the reasons why many Chinese for obvious reasons are able to secure SRRVs.

The reason of suspending a SRRV is on-going investigation of so called _pastillas_ scheme -- a loophole scheme reference from the Filipino sweets that is made of carabao milk and sugar, wrapped in a paper. There are many illegal immigrants, mostly to get a POGO for a job. And most of Filipinos are still worried due to influx of mainlanders.

What's sad is that one major requirement to work inside a POGO is the ability to speak Mandarin, which a lot of Filipinos cannot do.
I met a American condo seller who was upgrading. He was applying for the SRRV but the condo he owned could not be applied to the SRRV for qualifying. He would have to bought another condo. This brought me to think what happens when a couple owns land for 10 or 20 years, then build while applying for a SRRV. Is this a non-qualifying situation similar to the condo above? We went to the 13a route with my wife being dual. Cost was minimal compared to what I would have had to pay with SRRV ( my situation). We looked at bank investing locally. Interest is deducted automatically and this would be our only income here. Did not seem to be worth the effort however this payment would offset US taxation. Didn’t bother to find out how much earned interest would be but on $15k or more for example, I would rather have it in the US stock market earning more on average. So many expat people I have seen here cannot afford a vehicle much less qualify for SRRV (married to pinay). If a foreigner comes here single with no plans to ever marry, this might have been an option but what happens to his deposit if he dies here? Extra cost for lawyer to set up will, foreign beneficiaries? Fees for converting/sending the money back to family? Lots to have considered.

They can, but "foreign policy" in these matters can get hairy when you are financially dependant on the specific nation and loss of face is a cultural thing.
Just restrict the retirement visa to what probably is actual retires: 50+ olds having a monthly pension income from their homeland. Anything less is wide open for abuse, be it by Chinese or other nasjonalitis.
thailand is opening back up as we speak so watch them if lack of english no problem,as they have several great cities to retire.
If I am told to leave the Philippines, after my wife dies (hope not), I'll sell my home and ship my cars there. Any place is better for me other than going back to the US!
Retirement visa requirement rules are much tighter in Thailand than the Phillippines and are frequent changing. Even with changes to rules in the Phils it will probably be easier than Thailand.
Just make it 50/55 like Thailand/Cambodia, respectively and add some financial requirements. Why scrap it altogether?

@Andrew Wilson - if you marry her, you'll be eligible for a 13A (resident) visa, but you need her to vouch for you in the visa application.
You can still come (post Covid) on a tourist visa and keep extending it for up to 36 months. If you marry then it’s best to do the 13A visa.
But you have to go through the process... IE... pictures of you two together for a number of years.

The,ode Tho,masa I cannot say for sure but I know many women (not necessarily super young and gorgeous) who would happily commit themselves to the care of an older man if they are treated well and can hope for some security for themselves. If you are disabled and have many health issues I would say the bigger issue is health care...do you have enough savings to ensure you can get to the best private hospitals for any health issue. I’m planning on having at least $50k set aside once I’m over 60 and my health insurance that I currently have is dropped.

@Go Live The age of 35 was chosen because it is the retirement age for the South Korean military. It is also only 2-3 years before the 37-38 retirement age of US military with 20 years of service. The earliest soldiers in the US Army go to boot camp at 17, so that visa is particularly attractive to people with 2k to 5k per month in a military pension that will be untaxed in the Philippines.
A lot of Filipino servicemen would also gave loved the same privelige / unfortunately deported after service
I will be retired at 55 from the military and this was looking like a very attractive option post military service.
What about the SIRV visa? I assume that is still on offer. Doesn't it give you the same benefits except without the age restriction and with a higher investment amount ($75k)?

At this time, you can come back if you are legally married to a Filipina or if you have a Filipino child. I came back September 21st. I happen to have a Filipino child so my SRRV visa acted as my entry visa and I had to have a birth certificate of my child. It also helped to have the head of the Bureau of tourism communicate with immigration in advance to make sure there were no hiccups

If they are smart they will limit the number of visas to 5% per country like they do in the us. This de facto discriminates against large countries. Without actually saying it.
Hi Andrew. This will make almost zero difference in every aspect. Their tourist visa is too easy. On arrival and an Average of two hours every two months to renew and can stay for 18 months. Too make it even easier you can pay some one else to do it. Total cost is less than $2 a day. This will not stop the Chinese coming. They would need to re asses their tourist visa system to make any real difference. As a foreigner who lived their for the majority of an 8 years period, I can’t see the value in locking up 50k. This is just another waste of time from a Philippine government 😂😂😂. Something that you come to expect
they actually have an entirely different tourist visa process for mainland chinese. I fucking hate standing behind them in line at the immigration counters. Every single chinese citizen takes like 10 minutes to go through the damn checkpoints. And they are given a shorter time period than americans.

I am on the MM2H program here in Malaysia for the past 7 years. I've bought a nice condo and live very nicely . But like you said since the HK issues Chinese have been applying like crazy now the MM2H has been canceled. As of now there has been no new news. I'm supposed to have a auto 10 year renewal. So I have spent million in RM .

Tim Means, U have a US consul there I am sure U can apply as a tourist medical visa to start EXPAND... U have local consul, U R an American, maybe U have military relatives in the past. etc. go dig it up... get a lawyer for an exception/ qualifier NOTE etc.

Great feature. Thank you. I think 🤔 it a good move by the government to weed out undesirables entering the country. The Philippines has always been a welcoming country almost sometimes to the extent of being taken advantage of. And sometimes with certain people in position knowing about this. I am it's will really be just a temporary suspension for review to assess retirees, expats who are really legit. This will be both fair both ways, retirees and the country.
